Haseo and Clive Rosfield, somewhat of a character analysis.
Playing Dot Hack GU again this month and then getting my hands on Final Fantasy 16, I can really see the parallels with Haseo and Clive as protagonists.
-
They both seek revenge on a person they think killed / put into a coma someone they are close to on a personal level ( Shino and Joshua ).
Both are very trusting and somewhat naïve before being backstabbed by those they had trusted. ( the players helping the newbie Haseo aka PKing him and Anabella's whole thing with Clive and his family ).
Are saved by a guy with powers, joins their cause and is also important to the plot. ( Ovan aka Corbenik ( Yata, Kuhn and Pi can also fit here although they more likely force their hand at Haseo than anything else ) and Cidolfus aka Ramuh ).
Both are part of the special units in game and participate in giant monster-like battles in certain parts. ( Epitaph User Skeith and Dominat of Fire Ifrit ).
Have to face their past and accept the truth ( Haseo's whole inner conversation with Skeith and Clive's inner battle with the shadow Ifrit ) and become into their own.
Hell bent on seeking revenge and doesn't care what it takes to get that job done, willing to do anything, even sometimes at the expense of others. Grows out of it during the events of the game and starts to cherish those who they have met throughout the story and become better people because of it.
Both had killed or in Haseo's case PPK'd many people to find leads or survived to get to their goal but also had saved a lot by taking out those who seek to harm innocent people. Are very morally gray in terms of typical protagonists.
Have facial tattoos ( while Haseo's is purely cosmetic this isn't the case for Clive but they both have this for a unique design) and can ride bikes / chocobos in the open fields, deserts, marshlands, etc.
Get physically / emotionally injured by other in games antagonists but somehow are allowed to live. Actually loses some fights with big loss outcomes but then picks themselves up and finally wins over the other.
Has a character that wants them to kill the other for a certain purpose and talks with grandiose or nonsensical rhetoric. ( Ovan and Barnabas Thamir ).
Both main romantic ships has them being involved with another powerful character important to the story ( Haseo with Atoli / Innis ( who he can marry in game ) and Clive with Jill / Shiva ( that have a certain intimate moment on a beach hehehe) ).
Have connections to flowers and what they symbolize to people most precious to them. ( Haseo with Honeysuckles and Clive with Cosmos / Daisies ).
Their outfits and looks change throughout the game and are quite 'edgy' in appearance. ( although Haseo goes through it because his job class allows this to happen ). They both have a black and red color scheme.
Saves the world due to an outwards threat and deals with anomalies destroying the structures and peace of the realm ( Haseo with Cubia / Aida / Cernunnos and Clive with the mothercrystals and Ultima ). Also has gods / goddesses and politics ( even though Haseo's politics aren't that important to the overall story ).
Has antagonists that eventually join their side ( Haseo with Endrance and Clive with Dion ) and loses party members ( Haseo with Alkaid and Clive with Cidolfus ) vowing revenge on who was responsible for it.
Both get new hub-worlds ( Haseo does this four times while Clive only does this once ) with upgraded abilities and places to explore and have animal mascots ( Haseo with Death Grunty and Clive with Torgal ).
Have to look into themselves to summon their powers / and or give themselves a pep talk to draw out their potential to help defeat whoever they are facing. ( Haseo saying 'I'm right here Skeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiittttthhh! and Clive saying / paraphrasing 'Come on. I need it again. To summon Ifrit' ).
Gameplay is somewhat similar too. With the jokes about Square ripping off Bandai Namco, which is also the maker of Dot Hack as a whole, I can see the comparison clear as day.
-
In all, I think I like Clive as a protagonist is that he shares a lot in common with Haseo. Both their character growth is great. While Haseo takes more time to melt than Clive, they really are amazing protagonists that have more of a moral gray background than others in the RPG genre.
If someone has more examples, feel free to contact me to edit this post. Okay to reblog from me, just be kind about it. Oh if you haven't yet, I suggest playing Dot Hack GU, you won't regret it. Thank you for reading. <3

A friend is playing the G.U. Remaster trilogy and this came to mind immediately. I regret nothing and think he would say this unprompted.

I love .hack//GU, and I especially enjoy the part where Haseo went “It’s Skeithin’ time” and Skeith’d all over the place.
Spoiler joke under the read more.
I loved the part where Ovan went “It’s Tri-Edging” time and Tri-Edged all over the place.

Oh so I guess I should cross pollinate for that sweet sweet engagement, ig.
Hi I’m Sam. I host a mildly successful, but wholly non-lucrative podcast about RPGs, called RPG Bookclub.
Tumblr media
You know how here on tumblr, it’s awesome when you’re current on a TV show because you can come on here and everyone is guessing what’s happening next and making theories and focused on just the one part we all just saw?
That rules! But video games don’t have that (besides episodic games), so you have to wait till you beat it, or risk spoilers, and talking about the games is a much less easy process until everyone involved has beaten it.
…unless?
Enter the Book Club format, where we artificially pick a stopping point each week, and just discuss 4-ish hours of a game instead of the whole thing, and make our way through a bunch of games.
We try to often play through games people don’t cover often, so if you like the games in the tags, come check us out.
We also have three supporter only sub-series: One where we play the Trails series, every game, in chronological order, called Bookclub no Kiseki. But that's a lot to play each week, so we take some time in the middle to play the Tales of... Series, which are much easier to digest. And the last one, the JRPG Canon, which is more of a review/analysis of the opening section of a bunch of games, and not actually playing them to completion.
If you’d like to check us out, We’re on Apple Podcasts, YouTube, Spotify, Stitcher, and all the other podcatchers that pull their data from one of these three.
You can also find us online at www.rpgbook.club for links to our discord and all that.
Thanks!

I always get distracted when Pi is present during like proper cutscenes. I just.
Not even in a sexy way its just.
The jiggle physics look so ridiculous I can't help but stare at her boobs trying not to laugh.
She breasted boobily across the screen.

I still think it's cute that Haseo becomes a Guild Master of a guild ( Canard ) that helps out newbie players because of his own misfortune of being tricked by those who helped him when he was a new player. He knows what it's like and never will backstab someone who doesn't deserve it.
He still wants to PKK anyone that picks on his guild members, them being: Atoli, Syllabus, Gaspard, and Matsu though. Everyone else has to make sure he doesn't do that and use the colosseum challenge rules instead. lol The only ones that allow him to PKK on the regular is Yata and Ovan. ksnsnsnsnsnsnsns.

So I remember enjoying dot hack IMOQ and to a lesser degree dot hack GU back on the PS2. The difference had less to do with the gameplay and GU being darker but more to do with loving R1 and the dot hack SIGN anime. I remember being utterly furious that dot hack GU got the PS4 remaster job when dot hack IMOQ needed it more due to being released near the start of the PS2's lifespan.
But I got curious about the sheer number of area locations.
(I also am aware I rarely talk about the series in spite of my Balmung of the Azure Sky avatar/pfp but it's mostly because I'd be talking way more about the Phases and Cubia than anything released from GU anime onward.)
Now for those unaware of the series: with the dot hack franchise the games are designed like a fake MMO because the setting itself is an early example of a VRMMO series. It was out long before Sword Art Online, although Log Horizon has dot hack beat in turn (while still being its own unique thing with Log Horizon more of an en-masse Isekai than the objective secret-known-to-few nightmare that The World is). Each area in-setting of dot hack is supposedly designed by the devs or maybe is just generated out of the box by the blackbox code "Morganna" with humans taking credit.
But because this is a real video game too, instead the area codes are used to help generate which specific style, size, element, level, and sort of drops you'll expect to find in a map. There are some areas that you access only for quest/storyline stuff. There are also some that you are blocked from reaching until you get a specific keyword through the fake forums, emails, or in-game interactions with other characters.
The key code system goes Server then a word from each three distinct codeword banks. So like the most famous example in the series is Delta Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground, but accessing it in Theta, Lambda, or Sigma for example would result in a very different map. Holy Ground is one word as some keywords are like "Sea Sand's", "No Face", or "Royal Edict".
dot hack IMOQ are spread across four games. There's a total of 5 listed servers (I forget if Omega is accessible before/after the finale), 101 word A, 103 word B, and 102 word C.
dot hack GU, which is now 3.5 games, has as far as I know 3 servers with a viable Chaos Gate (the teleportation system to reach the dungeon maps) and 150 word A, 91 word B, and 131 word C.
Even just by the basic number of words I already know this is going to be insane. I never even did more than 200 maps in one set of games, goodness... Admittedly I don't remember if any game locked some key codes off for plot reasons but this is insane.
Basic probability used: A times B times and so on, this results in the potential combinations.
IMOQ: 5 times 101 times 103 times 102 = 5305530, or 1061106 per server. That's 1.06 million combinations. Per server.
GU: 3 times 150 times 91 times 131 = 5364450, or 1788150 per server. 1.79 million combinations.
Thankfully you don't need to visit every area to complete or get everything possible but I think I now know why the characters willingly shell out for The World even setting aside it being native to their computers' OS. It's bigger than anyone could feasibly ever beat!

It seems appropriate to update the party system as Haseo grows more akin to working within a party instead of being a lone wolf. That includes the morale system. Not only is the duration starting to lengthen but you no longer have to wait for it to fill up to use it, you can use it pretty much whenever but the longer you wait, the longer it'll last. New weapon too, you're pretty much where you were when you were the Terror of Death which is really saying something. You can even switch weapons in battle albeit it's through the menu or special. But having a good relationship via email with your party helps because it unlocks new attacks. Because of these improvements, the gameplay is slowly shaping up to be really enjoyable at times. I did actually manage to crash it from button mashing though…
The Versus card game is open now which means you can collect cards to play in the form of some really cool art. Same with the forum which you can in turn make your wallpaper in the desktop (which was a feature from IMOQ but done in a different way). The bike turns out that it was bland on purpose last time so they added an upgrade system where you can buy parts and mix and match to make it run how YOU want (really you just buy the best parts but it markets as how you want).
So now we're properly into spoiler territory and with that we're properly into SAO now with the players being stuck within the game. You can no longer head to the desktop to check your email. And with that, Atoli can't speak, can only send mail. But here's where it gets tricky because that's not the game's plot, in fact, the whole scenario is over pretty early, it just introduces that possibility and what it could possibly mean as well as the consequences it created.
It started becoming clear to me how much of a reinvention/reimagining GU really is to IMOQ because it's using a lot of the same elements just differently, like the Data cores (instead of virus cores). Donald Duck even returns!

wait... But as far as structure, it also takes after the first volume taking place with a tournament…again. Nowhere near as long though. But just know that once you've set your difficulty, you've done it for all the vols so…yeah.
The side-quests aren't nearly as meaningful but I'd have to say that the overall story jumped to being pretty good, there are some lines in there where I was very well shocked at how impactful they were. The only real complaint I have about it is the villains and I got spoiled about them but the way it's done (so far) is pretty cheesy, but I imagine it will be expanded upon and will actually make sense later. But yeah, this makes the first .hack that I actually properly enjoyed, thoroughly and genuinely, there was always bits and pieces but this one finally seemed worth it.
