Ocean Deep Ch1 Premise

In a world where inhuman and human creatures lives side by side, sometimes it was difficult to navigate where things were. So there was rules EVERY human followed. Don't engage. If you left them alone then they almost always left you alone... Unfortunately it's difficult when a whole pod happens to be under the impression that you belong to them.

IMPORTANT WORLD INFO:

This is set in a fantasy world with very little tech. Think Howl's Moving Castle kinda tech world. Also more Bride concept cuz I like it.

This is heavily inspired by @firelillys on Tumblr merfolk au. Please support all artists linked/mentioned here with their own works!  I'll be providing important info for our mer cast and leave links for a better image of what they look like. I wanted to pick pretty fish for them all so some of the original fish ideas were scrapped from the first drabble.

KYOJURO:

Kyojuro would be a lionfish such as the one drawn by @yuki2sksksk on Tumblr linked below.

TENGEN:

Tengen would be a white butterfly koi fish and would look like the linked post below except less eel and more butterfly koi also below.

HINATSURU:

Hinatsura would have a tail that starts out red then fade to pink and would have sorta spotted like patterned semi flowing fins being a Strawberry Peacock mer.

MAKIO:

Makio would have an orange-gold tail with flowing fins being a Golden Dragon Koi mer.

SUMA:

Suma would have a blue tail with more ruffled fins compared to everyone else being a (all blue) Halfmoon Betta fish mer.

With this out of the way let's get onto the chapter.

In a world where inhuman and human creatures lived side by side, sometimes it was difficult to navigate where the danger lied. No where was safe. 

The fae ruled the forests. Fairies and elves. Pixies and gnomes. Pans. Mischief makers. If not careful they'd whisk you away. Never to be seen again.

 The dwarves and dragons claimed the mountains. Proud and strong. If insulted they'd be incredible does to crush you.

The skies were never safe either. Run amok with harpies. The plains ran with herds of centaur. The night plagued with vampires, werewolves, and demons. The day ran with fauns and tieflings and shape shifters. So many dangers and so many things to look out for. Especially when it came to courting a mate. As they say

"Beware the monsters who lurk and live amongst the world. Beware of those who seek courtship from maidens. Do not engage. If you ignore and leave them alone then they'll almost always leave you alone."

You must learn to learn their language and not be tricked by anything. Stay alert. Stay aware. Always stay vigilant.

And never let your unmarried daughters near them alone-

The sky was beautiful today. That's all really you could think to yourself. The fresh scent of flowers filling your sense of smell as dead flower petals was swept away with the dirt and dust. With each step you took the sounds of distant crying was heard. F/c eyes only stared at the floor where bristles met the ground and pushed them all away... Eventually you did spare a look briefly over your shoulder and felt your heart sink. 

The Kocho family stood there. Or..what was left of the family.

The man hugged his wife tightly to his chest as she sobbed uncontrollably into his shirt. It was the most recent travesty really. Two months ago their youngest daughter, Kanao, had gone down to the river just down the old dirt road and through the woods a bit, to gather more herbs which they sold alongside the medicines in their family shop but she hadn't returned for a few hours. Then when their two older daughters went to go look for her, they two never came back. Panicked, a group of men including Mr. Kocho and the girls' grandfathers had gone out on a wide man hunt searching deep into the nearby woods and combing the long beach nearby for any trace of the missing sisters. Nothing ever came up. No footprints or scraps of fabric. It's like they've never even existed! Some say that they were claimed by fairies. Others say a ghost spirited them away. One person whispered that a flock of harpies might've flown them away.

Whatever the case, they were gone and it's unlikely that they were coming back.

The parents had already accepted that their girls were probably not coming back and was here to make flower arrangements for a memorial service the family was hosting in their honor and memory. Your boss was standing in front of them holding a few sample petals for them to choose from. In the middle of their talk, Mrs. Kocho had burst into tears, so the older woman gave the couple a moment to process their own emotions.

This wasn't the first time a young girl disappeared into thin air. 

When you were a little girl, your next door neighbor was a beautiful woman named Rei. Her pretty brown eyes and kind personality made her a favorite person to everyone. She loved going on night walks, but one night she didn't return from her walks. Her father moved his entire business three towns away a little after that. Another case was a girl your age who disappeared last year, Mitsuri. According to her brother, she ran into the woods to be alone after her fiance brutally broke up with her. As he went to find her, he saw her being carried away by a giant black and white naga, the boy had fled as fast as he could back but by then it was too late. Then later that same year, you heard rumors about a girl named Koyuki and her father disappearing from a boat ride near the river but since that didn't happen in your town, you didn't know if that one was true.

It wasn't always young women either. Sometimes it was young men that went missing. A famous case from up the mountains was the disappearance of Kagaya Ubuyashiki. The last anyone had seen of him was he was walking along a patch of birch trees. Witnesses said he was last seen speaking to a white haired woman before he vanished. People say she was a white birch spirit. Another famous case was Tokito. Again not in your town, but he was a lumberjack that often went into the mountains for wood but one day never returned.

Nevertheless it was both scary and tragic. 

Which was why there was a few unspoken rules your parents always taught you before they passed away. Never go anywhere alone. Never trust mysteries strangers. ALWAYS carry protection with you. Never go out late at night. Stay away from deep woods. But above all else-

NEVER TRUST ANYONE WHO WASN'T HUMAN.

They were all bad and will try to trick you. Don't trust a single one. Do not engage. Like clockwork you've always taken them to heart. Always looking over your shoulder. Keeping your guard up. Keeping a dagger on you at all times. Never going out at night for any reason. You weren't gonna be carried away by some lovestruck creature! It helped a bit that you loved in the middle of town and rarely went into the woods for any reason. 

"It's an excellent choice. These flowers are very beautiful. I'm sure your service will be beautiful." Your eyes finally turned away from the sight. Your sweeping resuming as your boss politely escorted the couple to the door. "Don't worry about the delivery. It's on the house. ...You both have my up most condolences." She bowed one last time to the retreating couple.

A sigh escaping from your lips. "It happened again..Why does this happen so much?"

"Because there are creatures who have become so fascinated by the easy prey of our kind. A human is seen as a trophy of sorts. A thing to show off what you have but others can't have..." The old woman slowly closed the door. "We must remember that as humans, there are those who will hunt us."...Old black eyes turned to yours. "You're a young, beautiful woman. Possibly the most beautiful woman in town now. I wouldn't forget to be careful during these times."

"Don't worry. I'm not allowing myself to be trapped by anything."

KNY Hashira Shitpost; Merfolk AU

You see! I watched the live action of “the Little Mermaid” yesterday and wanted to change the Hashira into merpeople so ya!

The Hashira

Under the phrase “Hashira”, nine merpeople are the personal guardians of the Royal Ubuyashiki family and the kingdom the Ubuyashikis rule from dangerous life like sharks, eels, serpent/octopus monsters, etc.

The Hashira use weapons like katanas and staffs to fend off these threats. Three of the Hashira use different weapons for their own comfortability

The Hashira guard the kingdom at night and kill those creatures to ensure the merpeople race aren’t further killed

All merpeople have hydrokinetic magic powered by lunar energy. Through moonstone pendants, they can bend water, control sealife and alternate swimming speeds

Sea monsters’ magic is ten times stronger than merpeople, but have a bigger mental affect. Darkness corrupts their mindsets quicker

Tomioka Giyuu

Giyuu is a cobalt blue zebrafish merman

Spends a lot of his spare time collecting rare ores and shells to make them into gifts to give to Tanjiro and Nezuko

Giyuu has his own private cave, that basically all the Hashira plus the Royal family don’t know about. He can get away from socialisation and recollect himself in silence

Kocho Shinobu

Shinobu is a teardrop butterflyfish merwoman

Cleans up toxic waste with the butterfly girls in her free time, for all to be recycled into poisons she uses in her missions

Shinobu can’t stand being above the seawater for too long, the sun is too hot and the air makes her skin feel itchy. She is very petty with her needs

Kyojuro Rengoku

Kyojuro is a firefish goby merman

Gathers and brings back round troubled sealife to the sea. He feels required to make sure the innocent beings of the waters are safe

Kyojuro spends pretty much all his free time with his little brother, sightseeing the land people at the beach

Tengen Uzui

Tengen is a mandarinfish merman

His overall style is so flamboyant and over-the-top, that most are blinded by the mere sight of him

Tengen, with his excellently-singing wives, create music for the underwater kingdom and hosts his own music club

Tokito Muichiro

Muichiro is a transparent surgeon fish merman

Gets lost so often that the Hashira have to drench his tail in sticking glowing dust to track him down more easily

Muichiro always runs into those dangerous creatures like sharks and octopus, but ends up playing with them

Kanroji Mitsuri

Mitsuri is a bubblegum pink betta fish merwoman

Loves decorating tails and hairs of her fellow merwomen and is very skilled at the art. She can groom tails in a few minutes tops

Mitsuri has a incredibly beautiful singing voice and makes up random catchy songs on the fly to sing as she swims

Gyomei Himejima

Gyomei is a stonefish monster+gray snapper merman hybrid

This merbeing hybrid can easily withstand the pressure of the deeper waters and studies the sea life deeper below

Gyomei has very poisonous spines all over his tail so he has to be very weary of contact with other merpeople

Shinazugawa Sanemi

Sanemi is a blackwing flying fish merman

A very speedy swimmer and can make a gliding jump for 350m at a time. His sleek tail and fins help double his speed

Sanemi spends lot of his time tracking down threats to take care of them, even outside of his duty as a Hashira, since it’s fun to him

Iguro Obanai

Obanai is a banded sea serpent monster+swordtail fish merman hybrid

Uses his magic a lot as it’s a effective way to restrain the enemies, but eventually has to be restrained himself until that mental effect disappears

Obanai covers his mouth with special seaweed and has it as precaution bandages, incase he comes across a injured being

Mer Legend~

Alright everyone! Here's Legend as he appears specifically in Kisses and Shells, (a mer!legend sick fic)!

"Legend did not grow with the transformation, not really. His torso remained the same, but his tail was longer than his legs by far, easily doubling the length of his body. It curled languidly below him as he glided to the surface, a soft blush adorned with brighter highlights of color along the edge of each scale, giving him a nearly painted look. The spines of his fluke were stark crimson, that same shade bleeding along the outer edge of the diaphanous, pale pink fins flowing at his hips and lower back, flaring about him like banners of pearly, blood limned silk. 

They reminded Four of the decorative fish he often saw kept for the way the water rippled along the flowy colored lengths, like pearlescent ink dripped into a tumultuous stream.  It was odd, seeing how soft and lovely he looked beside Cryopeia, the sleek lines of her fins weapon sharp compared to the silky veil of Legend’s, even the plume at the end of his tail more delicate webbing than not. "

Betta fish originated from Thailand but can be found in nearby countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Wild bettas live in shallow, freshwater areas such as rice paddies, stagnant ponds, marshes, and slow-moving streams.

there real name is Siamese fighting fish named after the Siamese warriors who first found them!

at minimum bettas should be kept in a five gallon tank with hiding places and a heater! They prefer 78-80 Degrees!

Bettas are anabantoids, which means they can breathe atmospheric air using a unique organ called the labyrinth. This accounts for their ability to thrive in low-oxygen water conditions that would kill most other fish, like the rice paddies, slow-moving streams, drainage ditches, and large puddles they live in! betta fish can learn tricks and even recognize their owners!

There are more than 70 different species of betta fish in the wild. The most popular species is called Betta splendens and that is what type you will almost always see in pet stores. There are over 30 varieties of Betta splendens that have been selectively bred to show certain traits like bright colors or long flowing fins. Some of the most common varieties of pet bettas include the dumbo, delta, double tail, halfmoon and so many more!

Many people think that betta fish do well in bowls, but this isn’t true. In reality, bettas need clean water conditions to thrive. This means they need a tank that is at least 5 gallons , or bigger, with a heater and a filter!

It’s common in animals for males to have more vibrant colors than females. The same is true for captive-bred bettas. Male betta fish often have more bright and varied colors than female betta fish do!

Wild betta fish are different looking than those bred in captivity. Captive-bred bettas have been selectively bred to be more colorful then their wild forebearers because most people prefer brightly colored fish as pets!

Gonna explain some common misconceptions about fish that I've run across in my time working at a pet retail store:

1) Bettas love shallow, stagnant water.

False, they can survive due to a labyrinthian organ which basically acts as kinda a lung so they can gulp oxygen. In the wild, in the dry season, they can end up in these shallow pools, but here's the thing, they can, and do, jump to get to a better pool with more resources and better water. If they can't, they die trying. Hence why your Betta jumped out of your bowl.

2) no Betta can go with other fish!!

False, they can't go with any fish that resembles a Betta. Let's be honest, we fucked up Bettas. Their fins are super long and heavy and they tire them out so they have to rest a lot, and they are hyper aggressive even to potential mates. However, if something is fast enough to get out of the Bettas way, is not going to bully the Betta, and doesn't look like a Betta, they can be great tankmates. A popular option is neon tetras. A school of 5 is recommended so the neons have friends (think of them as having anxiety, they need their emotional support friends), so I'd recommend a 10 gallon so the neons and Betta can have their own space.

3) goldfish and Bettas can live in bowls.

No fish can live in a bowl. Bowls fucking suck. Break the bowl. Goldfish need 10 gallons at the BARE minimum, per goldfish, and thats only for double tailed goldies. Single tails need 20 gallons minimum, preferably a pond.

4) tiger Oscar cichlids can be with other fish.

Depends. If it's small enough to fit in the Oscar' s mouth? No. If it's big enough to fit the Oscar in its mouth? Also no. Is it an armored catfish (aka a plecostomus)? Probably. That'd be about all I'd recommend. Oscars are dicks.

Fish facts #6 The Betta

The Betta fish. Commonly held as pets in aquariums but how tame are they really? Well, if their other common name as Siamese Fighting Fish is anything to go by, probably not very mundane companions. They are very territorial and are introverted but can live with other fish given the right circumstances. In fact, during the 1800’s in Thailand, they were collected and bred for fighting, similar to dog fights or cock fights. The current aggression from the Betta is a combination of their natural protectiveness and the hostility that was bred into them.

There are many variations of the species but the most common is the Betta Splenden, the one most typically found at pet stores. They are pretty small, chilling at 2.25 inches (5.7cm) and living on average for 2-4 years in domesticity, although they can live more than double that with correct care. Male Betta fish have an unusual quirk, they build nests made of bubbles, presumably to advertise health to a potential female, and if he scores a date the eggs will remain in the bubble nest, protected by the father. They require lots of space in order to remain happy and healthy and are mainly carnivores, although they are omnivores. If the color of the fins are dulled that can indicate sickness and/or stress.

Betta fish are tropical fish, making them colorful and appealing to look at. They come in many colors and their fins and tails have lots of variety in shapes, although males tend to be larger and more ornate than females. This also makes them more prone to warmer, stable waters. Betta’s also tend to enjoy jumping out of the water! They are actually extremely smart, they can recognize different people and can learn.

As mentioned by a factual ally earlier, betta’s can actually breathe in low oxygen water and even out of water with what is known as a labyrinth organ! Their fins, mostly the subject of discussion when it comes to betta’s, contain both nerve cells and taste buds which allow them to taste food nearby. Betta fish aren’t bottom feeders and you can tell that just by looking at their mouth. It is upturned, which means stronger jaws and provides an ability to feed from insects off of the surface of the water with ease.

Betta splendens, commonly known as the betta, is a popular fish in the aquarium trade. This species is native to the Mekong basin of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and mostly found at Chao Phraya river in Thailand. Bettas are a member of the gourami family and are known to be highly territorial. In the wild, betta spar for only a few minutes before one fish backs off. Bred specifically for heightened aggression, domesticated betta matches can go on for much longer, with winners determined by a willingness to continue fighting.  In captivity, they have been selectively bred to display a vibrant array of colours and tail types.

The double tail betta, also known as the DT, is just what it sounds like: It has a double caudal fin. It’s worth noting that this isn’t just a single caudal fin split in half, but a true double tail with two caudal peduncles. Double tail betta fish don’t necessarily have caudal fins even in size, but an even split is extremely desirable. They also tend to have shorter bodies and broader dorsal and anal fins, which usually mirror each other more or less exactly.

Note: His voice often drops lower when he uses the vowel “O” such as when he says “More power” ( an EX I wrote might look something like: “An’ not a moment sooner.” to display in printed words the effects of his voice modulation.

He also breaks up double syllabic words, such as senator. “Se-na-tour.”

He snaps his fingers to command Todo.

S sounds often resemble a “ hiss “
