DP BEAU MasterPost
So ok, you came here hearing about the spin off treading water stuff I’ve been doing. Turns out I am basically doing a whole spin off au of treading water where Team Triton learns witchcraft and the sub-branches of land magic.
God help me, I’m drowning in ideas regarding this.
Also, ALL of Team Triton get appodidios!
Tumblr media
(Pictured above: Me at Team Triton)
Danny’s appodidios: Aquapathy (Water sense), ????
Sam’s appodidios: Healing and regeneration (can heal herself and others)
Jazz: Telepathy and aquapathy
Tucker: Electrokinesis and thermokinesis (heat and electricity manipulation)
Also, they all get the standard merfolk power package (basic hydrokinesis, basic aquapathy, basic telepathy, which is thought speak)
As for magic, everyone has basic general blood magic (the basic healing spells and whatnot), minor telekinesis, and sleep studying.
Here are their specialties.
Elementalism- Danny’s one branch of magic that has the four classic western elements and miscellaneous elements that can be classified under the four main branches.
Fire- Technically, fire encompasses all energy, lightning, heat, sound, with enough time Danny will learn how to make mirages and show people illusions fully made of light.
Water- We already saw this with the merfolk, no further explanation is needed.
Air- Air encompasses all gases and is also inclusive of plasma manipulation.
Earth- This essentially covers all “solid” elements that didn’t fall into the previous three places.
Mental Magic- Jazz chose this route due to how it studied the mind and how to prevent mental illnesses. The shared technique everyone uses is sleep studying, which allows for you to learn in your sleep ALA Doctor Strange in his first movie.
She can also create illusions similar to her brother, but instead of bending light, she works with tricking your mind to see something you want to see.
It also comes with telekinesis since telekinesis is “mind over matter”.
Wand magic- Remember wands in Harry Potter? Basically that. Jazz chose to learn this.
Potions- Basically potions in Harry Potter. Sam learns this.
Chlorokinesis- Plant magic. Remember Isabella of Encanto? Sam can do that and more.
Artificing- This is Tucker’s speciality and basically he’s working with magic’s version of technology. Science has technology, magic has artificing, and those skills Tucker has with tech transfer over rather well with magitech and general artificing.
General blood magic- Miscellaneous blood magic stuff that doesn’t fall into any of the above categories. This is also Tucker’s field of expertise as well.
I thought long and hard about what parts of blood magic Team Triton would study.
Sam has a green thumb and likely is the most willing to learn about potions that doesn’t need to worry about proximity to Vlad, so she took over potions quickly.
Wands are potent and powerful, but Vlad doesn’t pay that much attention to Jazz and she could pass off a wand as an ornament or a bookmark. Mental magic is also incredibly useful in fighting off mental illness and keeping up morale, so Jazz slotted herself in due to her love of psychology.
Danny is tackling elementalism due to how it is essentially an extension of hydrokinesis and his aquapathy (“water sense”) also extends to other elements as well (yes he’s OP and I will not apologize for it, he can be OP as a treat).
Tucker can easily pass off artificing as “tech projects” and general blood magic needs to be studied by someone, so he’s taken over that role. Healing with blood magic is Tucker’s specialty despite Sam being able to heal for one of her two appodidios.
@breynekai-tfc Just thought you should look at this

Okay so I dont think I've ever done this before, so here it goes
*ehem*
didherodown's Phandom fanfic recs
(if the author has a tumblr I tagged them :) )
*quick note, most of these are ao3, however some of them are ff net*
Ghosts in the Closet by @myaibou
an excellent post cannon fic, that deals with grown-up Danny and his family and everything slowly falling apart
Cold Hands by @tourettesdog
a DP x DC of Danny/Tim, reveal fic. short and sweet (with a lil trama and angst dashed in there)
Face to Face by @dp-marvel94
Danny gets separated by the ghost catcher and has to deal with the side effects of being literally split in two
Treading Water by @breynekai-tfc
a mer!danny fic, you don't understand guys this is soooooooooo amazingly done
Heroes About by @healthysharkshealthyocean
a DP x Marvel crossover that features Spiderman, Deadpool and of course, Danny, based on the comics by @the-stove-is-on-fire
Vacation Crashers by @impyssadobsessions
a DP x DC in which the Fentons are camping when Batman literally crashes onto the scene
Shift by @captain-ozone
AU where the Fentons are Chicago-based, and everything up to the Pariah Dark incident happens there, but after the battle (and an unwilling identity reveal) the "thin" spot in the ghost zone shifts to Amity Park, and the Fentons move there to deal with the ghosts, and Danny meets Sam and Tucker for the first time
Phantom of Truth by @haikujitsu
a classic Danny is captured by the GIW, and who do they get to study this high-level specimen? The leading Doctor in her field Madeline Fenton (mind the tags, it's a dark one!)
Shadow of a Doubt by Haiju
a direct sequel to Phantom of Truth
Trust Your Instincts by @peachdoxie
in which someone is placing ectoplasmic bombs around the city, and Maddie turns to an unlikely ally to figure out what exactly is happening
the all too literal ghosts of your past by @glowstick-blood
in which adult Danny gets shunted back in time to exactly one week before the portal accident (dun dun dunnnnnnn)
Maybe We'll Find Each Other by DP_Marvel94
a one-shot of full ghost Danny getting turned half-human by the portal opening
Robin's Egg by @arzuera
a DP x DC in which Damiean while on patrol finds an injured Danny about to retreat into his core, and agrees to keep his core safe
Exposed by ADraconicScribe
in which someone anonymously submits a story to the local news that the ghost boy is in fact only half ghost, and is hiding among the students at casper high
Danny Phantom and Astro Boy Crossover By: Jaylina
as the title suggests, its a DP x Astro Boy crossover. There have been odd tears appearing in the ghost zone, and Danny gets sucked into one and trapped in another dimension where the ghosts have been taking over robots and wrecking havoc (I know this one is a lil niche, but I love it so much I had to include it)
Roughing It By: Haiju
Danny and Maddie go camping, but after a ghost attack (and some Vlad shenanigans) Danny is stuck in ghost form, Maddie is injured and they find themselves in a tenuis alliance

okay, so, I've collected a bunch of DP fandom stuff that I remember off the top of my head, specifically in chronological order & colour coded here in this post (fics/comics, tumblr posts, important imo) for no reason other than I saw a post asking for Phandom history & it triggered my biggest, most long-running hyperfixation & now I'm curious if anyone else remembers stuff.
this link is going to be the permanent version I will be updating, but I'm posting what I currently have (gonna go through my old laptop later for more) just to let people know. you can also find the link on my blog, but only on desktop. It isn't colour coded there, sorry.
please share more if you got anything else cuz I'm 100% sure I'm missing a lot of stuff & am too interested now. the biggest reason a lot of stuff isn't here is that I simply can't find it. second biggest reason is i forgor. things not included here aren't "unimportant," this is just the first stuff that comes to mind.

#Danny Phantom#Phandom History Archive#do you even understand how hard it was to find the original Wes post????????#i spent like 2 hours on that alone#Wes Weston why are you so hard to find#just realizing that a lot of shit happened in 2014#like. 2014/2015 ish#i joined somewhere between 2014 & 2016 so i guess i literally came here right at the peak of phandom activity#the height of tumblr's paranormal activity. you might say#i think i'm just biased though#should i put my own fics on here. Phantom is pretty important to me being my first DP fic#& also the thing that got me back into writing#it's not very good but by god if i dont love it. & anyways i put Bird AU on here lol i think i can put Phantom up at some point. as a treat#also if any links are broken tell me cuz i'm not checking them again. it's 4am#reminder: gotta find those Bird AU fics i read & put em here. there ARE actual Bird AU fics. i know there are. i did not hallucinate that#it just might be the hardest thing on earth to do since that was years ago & i have no idea what they were called#anyway gonna add a fuckton of fics & (hopefully) tumblr posts when i go through my old laptop. i got everything bookmarked on there#like. so many fics. i had them organized too based on what kind of fic it was. but they all have stupid names cuz i was like 15#me: i should do my stencil art today. just to be a bit productive & also maybe make money#my brain: what if you organized Danny Phantom fandom posts into a big archive for people to look at? for free. until 4am.#me: you know what that sounds so much better let's do that

In the spirit of tracking my progress as I learn to draw... here is this. 🙈
I drew this a few weeks ago. Because sometimes I want to draw things from my mer!au, Treading Water, so I do an art thing. >...>
I didn’t plan on Danny being able to fly in this story until I was writing the battle against the Mernotaur at town hall. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision, but now I’m in love with the idea of him using a hydrokinetic disk to fly around like Static Shock.
From Chapter 30:
Danny burst into the restroom at the end of the hallway, gave it a quick once-over to make sure it was empty, and then shrugged into Sam's jacket, zipping it up the front. It was a little small on him and made of some velvet material - definitely a girl’s jacket - but he wasn't going to complain. Because Sam was right. He wore this same NASA T-shirt a lot; it was his favorite, and people would have been suspicious if the 'Merboy Menace' showed up wearing Danny Fenton's clothes.
Danny turned the faucet on full blast. He quickly wet his head, and soon a pair of glowing green eyes were staring back at him in the mirror from underneath a mop of white hair.
Disguise - check.
Next he drew out a couple of globules of water from the sink, which he condensed around his fists.
Weapons - check.
His only remaining obstacle was figuring out the fastest way to get from here, the second floor boys' bathroom, down to the parking lot in front of the school before that crab decided to stop playing with its food.
Well. He did know of one way.
A few seconds later, the bathroom door crashed open, and Danny flew out of the room crouched on a small disk of water. He nearly tumbled off as he turned but was able to reposition the water to correct for his terrible balance.
Note to self - practice flying… And I still can't believe I'm even doing this! This is so cool!
As soon as he was sure he wasn't about to crash into the floor, Danny shifted his weight forward and shot down the hallway. He passed right over Sam's head and couldn't help but glance back at her, grinning at her startled expression and her hair whipping around her.
Danny tilted the disk and his body for a sharp turn around the corner and sped down the stairs, trying not to think about how if he fell he would certainly break his neck, and in very little time at all he had made it to the front entryway of the school. He shoved some water against the doors to open them, flew outside, and pulled the water back to his fists as he flew across the parking lot.

tfw treading water updates and you have a great time and then wastefulreverie posts ficrecs that you HAVE to check out so. thank you. also do you have any more
It’s been a HOT minute since I’ve read any new DP fics but I guess I can throw down some ones I’ve been following for a while. WARNING: None of these are complete stories!!
Everything Was White - @lexosaurus
Danny recovers from government experimentation. SUPER angst.
Shift - @agermanshepherdpatronus
After the concentration of ghosts shifts from Chicago to Amity Park, the Fentons relocate. The only problem is that Danny’s secret was exposed in the shift...
Disparaged > Dissembled - @imekitty
Maddie and Danny... have a very dysfunctional relationship. Angst is 11/10. Definitely not for the squeamish.
The Survivalists - @kinglazrus
After the disappearance of a flight, eerie footage of the survivors is released online. Told through an assortment of media, the world has its eyes on Danny Fenton and his classmates.
Ghost Under the Skin - @kinglazrus
A well-executed Danny Phantom rewritten fic!
Passageway - @ladylynse
Portal!AU that really digs into the horrors of having a gateway to another world in your chest.
Exposed - ADraconicScribe
Amity Park is tipped off that Phantom is half-ghost. Between the GIW and a looming threat, shit hits the fan.
Amity Park Ghoul - @ladyeidolon
Fusion AU with Tokyo Ghoul. On his way home from work, Danny is abducted and has to hide his new life as an artificial half-ghoul. It wouldn’t be so bad if he didn’t have to eat human flesh.

Got any fav DP fics to rec? :) I usually like to browse my fav author's favorites list but ffnet is having some sort of issue where it doesn't show all of them. I've got over 1000 favs on my list but on my user profile it only shows 500 :/ would love to see what recs you might have if you wouldn't mind!
Oof, I’m not sure I’m the person to ask, honestly! I don’t read as much DP as I used to, and I’m POSITIVE a lot of these are ones you’ve already seen recc’d before. Some, I haven’t read in ages myself. The ones I chose in this list are not all complete, but most of them are multi-chapter and very AU. In no particular order:
1. Candlelight: HappyLeif
2. Ghosts in the Closet: MyAibou
3. Treading Water: The Full Catastrophe
4. C’est la Vie: KeyBella
5. Social Networking: Chaos Dragon
6. Pits: Cordria
7. Something Special: Tay1019411
8. Dawning of a Sun: pearl84
9. Phantom of Truth, Roughing It: HaiJu
10. Everything was White: lexosaurus
11. Sounds in the Dark: sleepyreader13
12. Little Earthquakes: A Perplexing Puzzle
13. Wondering: phantomrose96
14. Living on the Edge: Lightning Streak
15. Withering: Gecko Osco
16. Cirque Berserk: Poisoned Scarlet
17. The Right of It: The Wicked Wench of the West
18. Running Blind: Dejah Thoris of Mars
God, there are SO MANY more I’m missing. PLEASE NOTE: many of the authors above have WONDERFUL selections of fics to choose from, so please, by all means, peruse their ENTIRE PROFILES and read EVERYTHING.
Other authors not mentioned above who I also recommend looking into:
sapphireswimming, Lynse, Represent, AnneriaWings, Elle Aitch, Danny Phantom SG-1, Darth Frodo
Again, I knoooooow I’m missing soooo many, especially considering I didn’t include many oneshots/shorter works. I have a few other rec lists from other tumblr users under the tag “phanfic,” so definitely check those out as well!

Legally Mine (Book Two in the Spitfire Trilogy)
by Nicole French
Release Date: June 28, 2017
Blurb:
What's the point of falling in love if it only breaks your heart?
Skylar Crosby should be on top of the world. She's just graduated from the best law school in the country and is supposed to kick-start a successful career. But with her father still recovering from his gambling addiction, her absentee mother suddenly reappearing in her life, and the stresses of studying for the bar exam, Skylar is feeling more like she's holding the world up rather than standing on top of it. And then, of course, there's the matter of her utterly smashed heart.
In just a few short months, brilliant attorney and all-around tycoon Brandon Sterling quickly became the sun to Skylar's universe only to twist it upside down and inside out with his secrets, leaving her with a decision to make that will change both of their lives forever. And although Brandon can't forget the girl who gave him back his heart, sudden changes in his own complicated life will make getting her back that much more difficult. Luckily, Brandon Sterling has never been one to walk away from a challenge.
Even when the whole world seems united against them, it's possible that they are their own worst enemies. Legally Mine, the second book in the explosive Spitfire series, continues the saga of Skylar and Brandon as two stubborn, intelligent, damaged people trying to learn how to let themselves love and be loved return.
Excerpt:
We stared at each other, bristling and irritated. Finally, eager to break the stare-off, I pushed off the wall with my feet to float on my back. I stretched toward the opposite end of the pool, arching in a way that made my breasts peak toward the ceiling, then flipped backward until I popped up again through the water. When I surfaced, Brandon was watching intently, a different kind of fire in his ice-blue eyes. Did he wanted to strangle me or eat me alive? It was hard to tell the difference.
"I know what you're doing," he said finally, low and almost menacing.
I continued to tread water, then flipped over again, slowing my movements even more. "Do you?"
"Get out of there, will you?" Brandon reached a hand out, beckoning me to swim back.
I just stared at it. "No," I said. "I'm not done with my workout."
I rolled backward through the water once more, then resurfaced to find Brandon standing up. His face looked like murder, but the tenting in his pants spoke of something else.
"Get out of the pool, Red," Brandon said, barely concealing his frustration.
"Stop telling me what to do."
"I'm not joking. Get out."
"No."
"Get out of the fuckin' pool, Skylar!" Brandon shouted, his South Boston accent out in full force. He thrust both hands into his hair and yanked. "Fuck!"
I just kept treading while sounds of the water lapping on the sides of the pool filled the space between us. Brandon stared at me, then dropped his hands.
"Fine," he said as he started to remove his vest. "Have it your way." He unbuttoned his shirt and tossed them both on the lounge chair next to him.
"What are you doing?" I asked as he started pulling off his shoes and socks, which then joined the clothes.
"What do you think?" Brandon snapped as he unbuckled his belt. "You won't come out, so I'm coming in."
"In your underwear?"
He pulled off his pants and threw them on top of his other things. He now stood in front of me in nothing but his boxer briefs, his perfectly sculpted body, including his sizable erection, on display for anyone to see. The reflected light glimmered over the broad lines of his shoulders and pectorals, the v-shaped muscles of his abdomen, the lean, long shapes of his thighs. Now he was the one who looked like a Greek statue.
I bit my lip, willing the heat building in my core to calm down.
"Well, it's either that or nothing at all," Brandon said just before he jumped in with a splash.
Tall as he was, he didn't need to tread water, but he still dipped underwater and surfaced like some kind of mythical sea god. The water glistened on his muscles as he tracked me like a shark.
My legs somehow kept circling, but the rest of me stilled. I wasn't in the mood to be pounced on, as Brandon sometimes did. He often used sex as a Band-Aid, and right now, I wasn't okay with that, even if the water droplets sliding over his pecs were getting me pretty hot and bothered.
My instincts took over: fight or flight. I dove underneath the blue lane barrier and swam to the corner of the pool. Before I could climb up the ladder, though, I found myself caged by two tanned, rock-hard arms.
"I don't think so."
Brandon's voice vibrated in my ear, and I froze. I turned slowly, and he released his grip on the ladder, backing off just enough so that I could turn around. His gaze bored into me like a drill. But it wasn't just the intensity in his eyes that pinned me to the ledge; it was the hurt there as well.
"You can't keep doing this," Brandon said in a low, taut voice.
Around me, his body was pulled tight as a drum. The evening had taken a toll on him too.
"You can't keep running away every time I do something you don't like."
"I don't––"
"You do," he cut me off gently.
We were close enough that he didn't need to raise his voice. Around me, his muscles flexed even more.
"Every time. My office. The airport. After you found out about Miranda, about Messina's payoff. That night at the club. And now tonight. If I railroad, Red, you run."
I heard my grandmother's words to me in Brooklyn after I had escaped there in April. She had compared me to my mother, who couldn't even stand beside me for the length of a party. And now I was becoming just like her.
"My life is complicated," Brandon continued. "I know that. I know it's not easy for you. But I am yours, Skylar, body and soul. But I can't be yours if you're not mine too."

Nicole French is an East Coast/West Coast hybrid creature, Springsteen fanatic, hopeless romantic, and total bookworm. When not writing fiction or teaching writing classes, she is hanging out with her family, playing soccer with the rest of the thirty-plus crowd in Seattle, or going on dates with her husband. In her spare time, she likes to go running with her dog, Greta, or practice the piano, but never seems to do either one of these things as much as she should.

Chapter 1 Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico Present Day The Gulfstream jet, loaded with two tons of Colombian cocaine, careened over dense Yucatan jungle as Layla stared out the compact window, horrified. If they weren’t running on empty and destined to crash, it might have looked lush to her, even beautiful. Without fuel, the engines starved into silence, she heard only the whooshing sound of the aluminum plane as it cruised over mangrove swamps and fast-approaching mahogany trees. All thoughts of her hasty departure from Guatemala to escape Don Guillermo’s wrath had vanished along with any hopes of safely landing in Cancun. They were going down. Layla gripped the armrests, dropped her head between her knees, and prepared for the worst. # Three weeks earlier, Layla was sitting at the crowded bar in Bucanero’s Cantina in Ensenada, on Mexico’s west coast, while she waited for Clay Lasalle, Canada’s biggest pot dealer, to show up. Carlos, her bodyguard and sometime lover, was with her, but rather than relieving the stress, his overbearing presence just added to the pressure. With the recent recapture and imprisonment of El Patrón, her notorious uncle, Layla had catapulted to the top of the Culiacan Cartel as his replacement. Now she was facing her first deal without her uncle’s guiding hand. To calm her jitters she resorted to the one thing that never failed her: tequila shots. “Don Julio, por favor!” Layla called to the paunchy bartender over the clamor of the rowdy, alcohol-fueled crowdmostly tourists in shorts and Hawaiian shirts. Above the polished mahogany bar a framed poster-sized photo showed a nude blonde being ushered out of the century-old watering hole by two Mexican policia. Of course it’s a gringa, Layla thought, Mexicans treaded more carefully in shark-infested waters. She waved a two-hundred-peso note as the bartender passed by with a tray of margaritas. “Momentito!” he promised. Carlos stepped away just as she downed her second shot. Though he’d given her his “cuidado” or “be careful” look before heading to the restroom, she ignored it. When a handsome gringo sat next to her and started talking, she was all in. By the time Carlos returned, Layla was too busy chatting with her neighbor to worry about her bodyguard’s glare. Carlos hated outsiders as much as seeing her drink, but she needed to chill. Tequila shots and flirting were a mindless diversion. The agave centered her, allowing her to distract herself without losing her edge before the meeting. “You’re from Chicago?” she asked. “I’ve been there.” The man gazed at the dark-haired Latina by his side. “What did you think?” She gave a dismissive shrug. “Too cold.” Her intelligent almond-shaped eyes were the color of charcoal. “I prefer Mexico.” A sardonic smile highlighted her cheekbones, making her face even more appealing. Layla turned back toward her bodyguard and focused on the shot glass the bartender placed in front of her. Poor Carlos. Coming to Baja always rattled him. It wasn’t only the jaw-breaking drive from Culiacan on dodgy Mexican roads. It was Ensenada—far from the safety of Sinaloa, well out of their comfort zone. But for Layla, Bucanero’s Cantina qualified as northern Baja’s one saving grace. The dive bar brought back memories of her wild, reckless early years. At thirty-five, Layla still had plenty of the right stuff. Her five-foot-six frame seemed mostly legs and Carlos’s rare compliments always focused on her tiny waist. She emphasized her striking physique by wearing low-cut tops but her most notable feature was the cascade of curly dark hair that spilled over her shoulders. She downed her last tequila shot, scooted off the wooden bar stool a step ahead of Carlos and moved towards the empty dining room. The cantina was not the best place for a meeting, but it suited their needs: an easy landmark near the border with a back room for business. Layla slipped into the barely lit room, accepted a menu from the waiter, and handed him a two-hundred-peso note. “Our associate arrives soon. We need privacy. Close the restaurant,” she ordered. “Your manager knows.” He nodded, pocketed the bill, and turned towards the kitchen. Layla walked across the worn wooden floor to a corner table in the back. She took a deep breath to steady herself before sitting down. Things would escalate into a full-scale argument once Carlos reached the table. She could already hear him scolding, “Bosses keep to themselves, especially in public.” When Carlos had a bad day, everyone had a bad day. He could easily vie for title of most miserable man on the planet. Too bad the sex was so good. Hijole! He had the body of a male model but two sizes larger, with café au lait skin. So handsome, but so disagreeable. Granted she shouldn’t have given that gringo the time of day, but tequila made her bold. Layla opened the menu, waiting for her bodyguard’s interrogation to begin. Carlos banged a cheap wooden chair against the table before sitting down. “What the hell do you care about Chicago? It’s not Madrid, not even Barcelona! That guy was boring! Are you so starved for conversation you have to talk to a gringo?” Layla silently perused the bill of fare. “I’ve had it,” he said, his voice rising. “I’m tired of my life. Am I just your bodyguard and nothing more? Everyone, everyone, told me to keep it strictly business, even your uncle. But I didn’t listen. I thought it would be that one drunken one night stand, and now I’m fucking chained to you because of this goddamn job!” His powerful hands clenched into fists as he rubbed them over his knees. “If only I could’ve left you in Guadalajara. But I’d have never made it out of the city before taking a bullet from your uncle.” That was accurate: You didn’t quit the cartel, the cartel quit you. She looked at the menu, avoiding eye contact, glad the waiter hadn’t yet returned. “Should we order?” He glared at her. “Are you acting like this conversation isn’t happening? Do you want me to walk out of here, meeting or no meeting?” Best not to test him. He’d do it, and then she’d be without a bodyguard. The drone of his voice, the bullying, started to sink in. Chinga! She had no trouble working the cartel mob, but Carlos ran her. He was as overbearing as her two brothers. Reynoldo who should have been running the cartel had died trying, and Martín, her other brother, wasn’t up to the task. Now with one brother and two cousins dead, Layla found herself atop the Culiacan Cartel. She looked up and said in as soothing a tone as possible, “Carlos, let’s not fight, okay? We’re here for business. I need you with me. You’re not only the man who protects me. I love you.” She did love him, though his bad attitude and barking complaints—usually aimed at her—were tiresome. He shifted his perfectly-proportioned body forward, staring at her with eyes she’d been lost in a hundred times. He surprised her by grabbing her hand, a little harder than necessary. They never touched in public. “After this meeting, we’ll talk about you and me.” He scowled. “I don’t know why you drink so much—and with strangers.” These macho men! “Okay, okay. I’ll let up on the shots. One last Pacifico while we wait.” The waiter came and they ordered. She checked her watch, 10 p.m. Lasalle would be showing up soon. She’d met him once before in Miami and sparks had flown—there was no denying they had chemistry. Layla changed topics. “So, what does he want?” “Chinga! Who cares?” She backpedaled. “Carlos…” He gave her a cold look but couldn’t hold back his opinion. “Routes for coke or pot.” The meal went smoothly. Layla pushed an enchilada around her plate and watched Carlos demolish an order of chilaquiles, three tamales, and a couple chicken enchiladas. As he piled it in, a rare calm settled over him. He was well into his second beer when Clay walked into the restaurant. Layla saw him first, but Carlos looked up the moment Clay crossed the threshold. As a bodyguard, Carlos’s instincts were flawless. The thirty-something Canadian smuggler was six feet two, a looker with brown shaggy hair and an easy smile. Though his frame was solid, almost hefty, he moved like a cat. Spotting Layla, he gave a nod as his long strides brought him across the room. He let his knuckles graze the table as he flashed her a warm smile. “Layla, it’s been a long time. Good to see you again. And this is…” “Carlos.” “Carlos, hola. Clay.” The Canadian extended a hand. Carlos rose from the booth. “A pleasure.” He spoke in Spanish. “I’ll be close by,” he said to Layla. “Have a seat.” Layla slid over to allow room for Clay. Not much had changed about the northern grower since she last saw him—still that laidback air even though he controlled the lion’s share of Canada’s pot sales. “Something to eat?” Layla continued in English, though she knew Clay spoke passable Spanish. He shook his head. “Just a Pacifico.” She gestured toward her beer and the hovering waiter sprung into action. “Long drive?” “Not bad. Been waiting long?” Clay asked. “No.” They silently watched the waiter set down the bottle of beer and retreat from the room. “Salud,” said Clay, raising his bottle. “Layla, I’m glad you could meet with me. I’ll get right to the point. I want a partner to move a couple tons of coke to Cancun by air—a regular run. I heard you lost a yacht recently, so a partnership could work out well for both of us.” How did Lasalle know about the navy seizing their yacht? “Cocaine…” “Boats are fine, but flying’s faster and we can carry more. Plus I’m dealing directly with FARC. Gotta hand it to ’em. For a guerrilla army in the Colombian jungle, they know how to run those cocaine fincas. And we can get better prices from them than anyone’s gotten before.” He took a swig of beer. “Interesting,” she said without emotion. “How will you manage those good prices?” “A combined order with you.” He paused and waited for her reaction. She said nothing. “The airport manager’s on board,” he said, “Already allowed some of my flights through.” She leaned back against the worn naugahyde booth, settling into the game of cat and mouse. “What kind of planes?” “A Gulfstream and a DC-9.” Layla raised an eyebrow. “Who owns them?” “A couple guys in Lauderdale run a shield for drug planes by providing American registration to the cartels. It’s complicated—big money down, more than what the plane’s worth. In return these guys maintain the plane registration, and hire Vietnam vets to do the cartel runs.” She nodded. “If the plane’s seized, the pilots deny responsibility. These hooked-up guys can reclaim the plane because their corporation holds the lien,” Clay said. Layla slid forward, placed her elbows on the table and picked at the label on the empty beer bottle in front of her. “How can they do that? Someone must hold the original papers.” “They disguise ownership by sheep-dipping it—you know, a fake identity—and pass it on to straw owners. It’s a slick process, an old scheme used by the CIA.” “The CIA? Come on, Clay,” she said with a slight frown. Do I look naïve? She flipped her dark hair over one shoulder. Clay’s gaze shifted to Layla’s long elegant neck. He caught himself, looked away, and readjusted his long legs under the table before speaking. “These vets couriered traffickers from Colombia to Miami for the CIA. Talk about walking the line. They did time for trafficking, but they’re back, and they’re hotshot pilots.” “Your shipments came in with no problem?” Layla asked. “Like I said, I have connections, and the players, they’ve worked it out.” “Does that include the Gulf Cartel?” He nodded. “Hmm. I’ve got to think things through,” Layla said. “When’s your next run?” “Got a few details to sort out. I hear you’re growing the European market—this’ll get you a lot closer to that trip across the pond.” Layla gave him a cool smile. “If I didn’t know better I’d think you were spying on me.” “Layla,” Clay said with a chuckle. “I’m just trying to keep up with you.” She looked at him a second too long before she continued. “Can I get back to you?” “Sure.” Clay finished off his beer. “Let me know where and when.” # Layla and Carlos left Ensenada immediately after the meeting, heading out on the road to Culiacan. Carlos high-powered the black SUV through the moonless night while Layla closed her eyes and imagined the impact of bringing in new business on her own. In a four hundred billion dollar global industry, she could begin to stake out her territory. “By working with us, FARC will see Clay as a real player,” she confided to Carlos. “Basta! Always business!” Carlos said, still in a huff. Layla composed herself before responding. “Yes, it is. Business that allows you to drive a new Escalade, wear expensive suits and five thousand peso boots, and drink Don Julio and Dom Perignon. Let me remind you: My uncle’s in prison and he’s left me in charge. Get used to it!” She leaned against the window, pulling as far away from Carlos as possible. Always fighting. She turned her attention to the darkness outside. It was a lonely two-lane road, not used much even in the daytime. Though she couldn’t make out the mountains that surrounded them she knew they were there. They rode in silence, absorbed in separate thoughts. Carlos concentrated on dodging potholes. Layla contemplated moving powder with Clay. The rules were changing and in this game they all had to stay ahead of the curve. She was anxious to run the idea by El Patrón. But they had a long drive ahead.

Treading Water One-Shot: Water Deprivation
Danny hadn't gone swimming in 3 weeks and it showed.
He looked terrible. He seemed paler, sicker, and was much more emotional than usual.
"Danny, I think that we should try Sam's pool. Sam convinced her mom that she should host a special meeting outside this weekend. We got the opening we need here." Tucker said, extremely worried at how bad Danny seemed.
The Casper High pool had been closed after some football players got drunk and ended up vomiting in the pool, so Danny couldn't go swimming like he normally did. Danny also seemed to be a lot more overwhelmed by water in general, and had almost burst into tears near his house once when Tucker asked him why he couldn't try out the ocean instead.
"You don't get it man. I can't go there or he'll kill me." Danny said, seeming utterly distraught.
"What? Who would do that?" Tucker said, clearly incredulous.
"Skulker. Remember that headhunter? He can track me as long as I'm in the ocean. I can't go in or I put myself at the risk of becoming his next hunting trophy." Danny mumbled, clearly worried.
"That's horrible! Is he with Vlad?" Tucker said, wondering about how to keep Danny in safer waters.
"No, he's Merfolk Empire like Birghid, Daru, and Kaima." Danny said, clearly apprehensive.
"What? Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold up, how does that work?" Tucker asked, a mixture of worry and morbid curiosity seemingly bubbling up out of nowhere inside him.
"Well, I'm basically seen as a monster among the merfolk. What happened to me was unnatural, so they're worried about more humans becoming like me. You have to remember that Vlad was the first human that the merfolk met, so he spoiled the general view merfolk have of humanity. That, overfishing, and ocean pollution doesn't paint a pretty picture of humanity." Danny replied, clearly tired and longingly staring at the ocean as if it held the answers to all his problems.
Considering how tired he seemed, it probably did. Tucker noticed that Danny just seemed better after swimming. He couldn't entirely pin it down, but Danny's skin seemed clearer and smoother after swimming, his mood just seemed more optimistic, and he was very energetic in the water jumping in after a long and tiring day at school.
Now, looking at Danny go without any swimming for a month, and Tucker wondered what exactly Kaima did to Danny that made him like this.
Tucker used to envy Danny's hydrokinesis and how it gave him power that Tucker really couldn't match, but seeing how Danny wilted without water made Tucker feel terrible about his previous jealousy. Tucker had masked his jealousy with enthusiasm, trying to be happy for Danny despite a small part of Tucker being utterly envious that he couldn't get in on the merfolk action.
But now? Seeing Danny so pained by going dry made Tucker want to punch Kaima for how she impacted Danny's life. Tucker knew that without Kaima, Danny wouldn't be alive, but still. Whatever Kaima did to Danny, that was something Danny would have to deal with for the rest of his life now.
"Hey man, cheer up. Sam said her parents were worried about the merfolk and she persuaded them to hold a second meeting with your parents and Vlad in attendance. We have a shot at getting you a safe swimming space for today. And it's not just that. Sam is even looking up ways to reserve lakes and rivers from the public just to keep people away from the next swimming space you could have after we graduate Casper High. You can't go swim in the high school pool forever dude." Tucker said, trying to stay upbeat.
"Okay, Tucker, you have a point. I can't wait to go swimming, I will have you and Sam both eating my bubbles." Danny said, clearly perking up.
"Okay man, mind if I run to my house for a quick second? I will need a speedo if I go swimming with you both this time." Tucker said.
Author’s Notes:
I mean, Kaima is baby, but I was trying to get into Tucker's mind here.
I wrote this shot for @breynekai-tfc as a way to explore how water deprivation could impact Danny. I have Ideas regarding how this AU could go, but maybe I will be able to dump everything here later or just make a new tumblr blog for DP stuff.

5 Years Later: Treading Water AU!
Danny had lasted at college for a year without ever going swimming. He had to avoid water until he had privacy. When he knew that his roommate Ian was out partying or studying (Ian always came back before 8 pm when he planned to sleep in their room), he could at least pull out his hydrokinesis in their shared room and not worry about anyone walking in on him.
So he set an alarm for 9 pm and always took peaceful baths at 12 am, relatively late enough that no one would likely walk in and see a glowing merman with white hair and green eyes. After all, time was a good way that humans managed their days. Rise with the sun and all that.
There were some night owls, that was true. But Danny knew how to manage his ... condition and he had a kiddie pool to let himself soak his body and let the water wash his pain away.
Ian loved pool parties and that was the one thing Danny envied him for. Ian went to them all the time and always made sure to offer Danny a chance to go as well. Ian was nice like that, he understood that some people couldn’t do things that others can. Helping out with the dishes, getting a snack for Danny when Ian went to the vending machine, little things that made Danny feel warm inside in a way that abated the constant pain being away from water made him feel. Danny may envy Ian, but Ian was a good friend.
Danny always made sure to clean up whenever Ian wasn’t around. Hydrokinesis was a merfolk power and using it brought out his other form, scales and all. It sure was pretty handy for cleaning up though. Danny was pretty sure he could start up a house cleaning service using his powers. Or maybe house sit.
Rich people tend to keep so many properties that they had to hire people to take care of them when they could have just housed other people in them and make them charge rent. Vlad kept all those places nice and clean and empty, why be so wasteful when there were homeless people on the street? Danny could understand landowning when it was a supplemental income that helped people get by, but keeping a dozen empty houses just for yourself seemed incredibly expensive and wasteful to Danny’s eyes.
Ian was one of those people so nice that Danny had wondered if Ian was faking it. Turns out he was just that genuine, just a little more sheltered than most people his age. Ian had been home-schooled up until his last year at college, when he met Danny. Ian reminded him of Kaima.
Danny didn’t want to think of Kaima or anything like her. He may think of Kaima as a friend, but she brought up some pretty bad memories. He knew that he couldn’t escape the Merfolk Empire forever, but they can’t go on land yet as far as he knew, so he moved inland for college.
It was the safest option available anyway, everyone would be curious about why this hydrophobic boy stayed close to the coast when he had a chance to escape the worst fear of his life. He spoke with Sam and Tucker a long time ago when college came up and the idea that they had to split up came. They would always be friends, but coming together could be hard at times.
Tucker was at MIT and honestly? Good for him. He LOVED being there, it was a challenge unlike anything he had ever had before and with his experience with the latest cutting edge technology courtesy of the Fentons? Tucker was a rock star.
Sam had thrived too. She was going for a dual degree in botany and anatomy. She had been FASCINATED with merfolk ever since she became their friend and wanted to see how human anatomy and merfolk anatomy differed courtesy of Danny. It was good for someone to know first aid anyway.
Vlad had gone silent and was definitely planning something, but he said that Danny wouldn’t deal with anything in college. Because of this, Sam, Tucker, and Danny were all trying to prepare for Vlad’s next encounter the best they could, but they had their limits. They couldn’t train together the way they normally did, they were too far apart for that.
Danny couldn’t also train his hydrokinesis all that well since he had to keep it secret for college, but he could work with his electrokinesis at least. Danny just kept a spare battery to practice via charging the battery and then letting other people use his battery, then charging it via electrokinesis in secret.
It was coming along SUPER well. Danny wasn’t entirely sure if Vlad had electrokinesis, but Danny had been able to finally shape it as though it was water, perfectly under his control. No singed battery, clothes, or hair. Nothing was on fire like the first time he pulled out electrokinesis. After 2 years of diligent practice, his electrokinesis was finally under control.
Danny was pretty sick of being approached for his extra battery though. Ian was at least nice enough to charge it when Danny “forgot” to do so in the middle of the night, which made it inconvenient to drain the battery too quickly, since the battery was designed to last a really long time as it was custom made by Tucker. Tucker had a small business selling high quality, long lasting batteries that could last 12 hours charging your devices before you had to recharge them and he was raking in a fortune. Sam had also pushed Tucker to experiment with chemistry as well, trying to see what ecologically friendly options for batteries were out there. Tucker had a prototype battery for the eco friendly market, but he was still working out the kinks of liquid batteries.
Dalvco was trying to recruit them all of course. Sam knew how to cater to Vlad’s market, the eco friendly activists that wanted the world to be a better place, Tucker was too good with technology NOT to be recruited by all the major tech companies, and Danny was Danny. Nuff said.
At least Vlad didn’t know about how Danny empowered Sam, Tucker, and Jazz using his blood. Danny would have heard about Vlad testing them otherwise. Sam could not only heal herself, but other people as well. Tucker had electrokinesis and thermokinesis, but not Danny’s water mode. Neither had water mode, or even Danny’s level of hydrokinesis. It was a little depressing, feeling alone like that.
Jazz didn’t make him feel so alone though. She had water mode and telepathy too. It felt a little invasive when she used her mind powers, but it also helped him deal with the feeling that he wasn’t good enough. She couldn’t work with as much water as Danny could, but it felt close enough that they bonded over their shared water awareness.
It made Danny not feel so alone. Maybe Danny could even bring Ian into his inner circle as well. Danny had something big to fight against Vlad with now. Danny had hope.
Author’s notes: I wanted to see what Danny would go through regarding water deprivation when he had a lot more experience and power under his belt regarding his living status (as a college student, he has way more freedom, but more responsibilities) and how water deprivation could play with his physiology. I remember how @breynekai-tfc said that Danny could either get used to water deprivation or his body essentially went into shock.
I personally head-canon that as Danny grows older and as his body matures, he can force himself to deal with water deprivation better as a form of exercising his transforming, like how he couldn’t keep himself human and couldn’t breathe in the shower in his first few days as a merman, but after a few weeks in, he manages to keep himself from breathing in chlorinated pool water by forcing his lungs to breathe air.
I also wonder what would happen if Danny either donated blood to/if someone drank his blood like a vampire. The heart is what contains a merperson’s “essence” and blood is pretty close to the heart...
So, here are what Sam, Tucker and Jazz can all do courtesy of Danny’s blood power-up: Sam: Regeneration (self-heal) and Healing (good for helping Danny heal when he’s passed out)
Tucker: Electrokinesis and Thermokinesis
Jazz: Water-mode (not as strong as Danny though) and Telepathy.
They all also got the standard merfolk power package as well, thought speak, hydrokinesis, and aquapathy.
Danny is the “source” and has the strongest water-mode, electrokinesis, regeneration, thermokinesis, AND poison barbs in this AU I’ve developed, though I’ve mainly lampshaded the electrokinesis and water-mode. He’s a force to be reckoned with. Vlad is TERRIFIED of Danny, but would never admit it. 5 appodidos in 5 years and Danny has the potential to unseat Vlad and take his place. Imagine what Danny could do in 20 years?
Edit: Also, the Merfolk Empire would shit their pants too. Danny somehow found a hack to get multiple appodidos in a way that they never knew was possible, and when they finally beat the Siren Kingdom, they’ll come on land and be scared senseless of the mysterious hybrid that is ungodly powerful.

5 Years Later: Treading Water AU of the Treading Water AU
Goddammit. I need to study but procrastinate by creating a spin-off AU of @breynekai-tfc’s Treading Water AU.
Here’s some major points that this AU has.
This AU is one where Danny has avoided the Merfolk Empire no matter what.
He remembers the death sentence that Empress Birghid cast on him and has vowed to keep himself alive so that he can go up against Vlad.
After all, Vlad is uniquely dangerous in how he can work with human and merfolk resources and Danny has similar power as well, so if Danny’s dead, Vlad is essentially unchecked here.
Danny has a blood empowerment technique that consists of him feeding someone human his blood.
This vampiric method of cannibalism was developed in theory when Jazz asked about how Danny got this way in front of Sam and Tucker.
Danny noted that Vlad did cannibalism and it’s possible that something similar happened with Danny, which had Tucker note that flesh is likely involved for empowerment, and then Sam brings up the idea of drinking blood for superpowers.
Sam has healing and regeneration, Jazz has telepathy and water mode, though it is weaker than Danny’s, and Tucker has electrokinesis and thermokinesis.
They also have the standard merfolk power package: thought speak, limited aquapathy, and hydrokinesis.
Tucker was the first to notice new powers, he accidentally killed his old pda.
He claimed a fuse blew in his old device, but he had accidentally hit his pda with a powerful electrical charge and it killed it. No matter Tucker did, he couldn’t fix it.
But hey, new powers!
Jazz was the second to notice. Her telepathy took a while to kick in, but when she realized she could sense people’s feelings, she was ECSTATIC! This new power would be SO helpful to making her a good psychologist.
Sam was getting impatient and accidentally gave herself a paper cut. To her shock, her paper cut healed immediately.
It’s not until they come into contact with the Merfolk Empire courtesy of Jazz sniffing out merfolk in Amity Beach that they realize that they should try to see if they can be empowered by Danny’s blood further.
On the second try, they got new powers. Danny is getting tired of being bled for power though. If they grow powerful enough, would they turn out like him or Vlad, or would they mutate into something like the Mernatuar?
Due to this fear, Danny insisted that they first train their two powers and then consider a later power up, which made sense. Also, they weren’t entirely sure how Danny’s blood would impact them... so better stay on the down low for now.
Taking into consideration how Danny’s own power is so great that he nearly killed himself by accident and how he wouldn’t want them hurt by the powers he bled himself to give them, they all agree to first master their powers and try to see if they had any new mutations as well.
They don’t have any new mutations, but they are definitely a little like merfolk.
In general, their skin has gotten very smooth and much less prone to acne.
And as a group, Jazz, Sam, and Tucker all have radiant skin. It’s very surprising to look in the mirror as a teenager and realize you haven’t had any acne break outs in a while.
It’s not much, but it’s pretty noticeable to someone like Danny, who was already trying to keep an eye on any possible physical changes that blood drinking could induce.
Sam was sort of internally ecstatic, since she was never as close to being a vampire as she had been before.
Oh, don’t get it wrong, she hated that Danny has to suffer, but now she has powers, to not only heal faster, but to heal her new friends as well.
Tucker also liked that he can charge his devices as well, he had to bury some sadly, but hey, you win some, you lose some.
Jazz was also trying to dig into magic along with Sam, since some of their powers are more covert than overt, trying to seek physical power in magic is not unthinkable.
Jazz and Sam become witches and start up a covenant too. Tucker still has a lot of raw elemental power, but Jazz and Sam have magic down to a science.
Danny also does witchcraft a little, but mainly focuses on his own powers, since he’s extremely powerful. He managed to summon a sea storm underwater once, but it nearly killed him. He’s not planning to fall on his sword in this AU.
Danny mainly knows minor things, like sensing magic energy and whatnot.
Like goddamn. I have thoughts for this 5 years thing. I get to play in the sandbox and I have Ideas.
