Hackle Summer Trope Challenge-Throwback Edition

What’s this?

A challenge (created by @cosmic-llin​) to inspire and generate Hackle (Ada Cackle/Hecate Hardbroom) fanworks for popular fandom tropes.

When’s it happening?

July 2nd-August 26th

Why’s it happening?

“I’ve been in a lot of small femslash fandoms, and one thing I’ve noticed often is that people are often shy about writing the same tropes and ideas that other writers have already used, in case they tread on their toes. Whereas in big, popular fandoms, twenty people can write variations on the same idea and they’ll all be welcomed by readers.

I don’t think we should be afraid of treading similar ground in our fics and other fanworks - we all have different perspectives to bring to the same basic concepts. So I wanted to do something to celebrate that and create more fanworks for popular fandom tropes.”~ @cosmic-llin​‘s explanation that I echo 1,000x over.

To find out how to get involved:

This challenge will run for the next eight weeks. Unlike years past, I won’t be posting a trope a week, I’ll be assigning two weeks to a past year’s list. As we’ve done this for four years (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021), each year will get two weeks. Since this whole challenge is kind of like a make-up/second chance year, there will be no make-up weeks. Anyone who wants to participate creates a Hackle fanwork using one of the tropes, posts it on Tumblr and tags it #hackle summer trope challenge. For our ao3 users, please post to The Hackle Summer Trope Challenge.  

At the end of each two weeks, a masterlist will be created of the fanworks created for each trope, and at the end of the challenge, there will be a masterpost of all the works. (Ex of a past year’s: 2021)

What kinds of fanworks can I create to take part?

Any kind! Fic - from a drabble to an epic, art, vids, gifsets, graphics… anything you want! It just has to involve the tropes of the weeks in some way.

What if I don’t make a fanwork within the two weeks assigned to certain tropes?

No problem! If you create a fanwork for any of the weeks by the end of the challenge on Aug 26th, it will be added to the masterlist.

Do I have to create something for every week?

Nope, this is a fun challenge to get our creative juices flowing - nothing about it is mandatory. Participate in one week or in all eight or anywhere in between! At the end of the challenge, @cosmic-llin​ will post a Roll of Honour of everyone who participated, maybe with a special spot at the top for anyone who completed all eight weeks!

Drabble Challenge July 2018

#15 “Is there a reason your naked on my bed?”

Warning: you will fall in love with Jungkook

Word count: 712

You let a quiet sigh leave your lips as you had began to sit up, pulling back the navy blue duvet. You freeze when you feel arms tighten around your waist . Who the hell had snuck into your bed?! You placed a hand over your heart, trying to calm it down. You slowly turn your head, coming to face brown locks spread across your navy blue pillow . A wave of fresh scents filling your nostrils.

You can’t help but smile at the boy sleeping beside you, taking in his beautiful bare face . You stopped admiring his beauty, remembering the problem at hand. Why the hell was he in your bed?! You let your eyes wander, a faint blush falling over your cheeks . As if on cue his eyes slowly flutter open, letting you meet his sleepy brown irises. He sends a lazy smile your way as he begins to stretch, revealing more of his bare hips.

You let out a shriek as you dived in his direction to pull up the navy blue duvet, pulling it up all the way to his neck. He lets out a soft laugh as he lets his arm wrap around your waist, pulling you down on top of him. “Is there a reason you’re naked in my bed?” You had began to silently thank the magical duvet that had separated your body from his. Your question didn’t come off as angry as you had intended it to be, even if it did he wouldn’t have actually taken you seriously. This wasn’t the first time you woke up with the older in your bed.

He slowly takes your left hand in his, looking at the sapphire engagement ring he had placed on your finger the previous night. “Here i thought you’d be nicer to me since we’re gonna be together forever.” He laughed lightly as he left multiple soft kisses on your hand. You started to remember last night like the scene was playing again in the present.

Jungkook had put on I Choose You by Sara Bareilles, easily singing along to the song, he must’ve been practicing. He takes your hands in his and he starts to dance around the living room with you, never letting his dark eyes leave yours. Your heart fluttered, realizing just how much you were in love with this romantic goofball. The song stops out of nowhere and you give him a questioning look. He slowly steps back from you and continues to give you that loving smile. You watched him, unsure as to why he was giving you that look .

There was such an unreadable look in his eyes it made you nervous. Jungkook slowly dropped to one knee, your heart dropped as well . This wasn’t real was it? Surely he was playing a cruel joke on you. He pulled out a blue velvet box, slowly opening it to reveal a sapphire ring. “Y/N.. i know we’re really young but i can’t remember my life before you.. I don’t want to have to know days without you. Will you marry me?”

You were in shock to say the least, you had dropped to your knees and wrapped your arms around his neck, hugging him tightly as if he’d evaporate in your arms. “Of course I will, I love you so much Jungkook.” He smiles and moves back so he could slide the sapphire engagement ring on your finger.

He breaks you out of your thoughts “I don’t want you to be nicer to me i love you just the way you are.” You let a soft smile rest on your lips, knowing you picked the right guy to spend the rest of your life with. He loved you and you loved him, you couldn’t ask for a better soulmate.

Draco is gay, and he’s proud of that. Unlike so many things in his life that he has been ashamed of—never pleasing his father as much as he’d have liked to, as a child, and later, almost every single thing he did during the war—his sexuality is something he has never wished were different. By the time he realized it would prevent him from continuing the Malfoy line as was expected of him, he was past caring what his father thought of him. So, it had been supremely satisfying to tell Lucius that doing what it would take to produce an heir is abhorrent to him (and his mother hadn’t minded, anyway).

And his relationship with Harry is something that many have shamed him for—how dare he, a Slytherin ex-Death-Eater, remove the wizarding world's Savior from the dating pool? But they don’t know that only he can comfort Harry after his nightmares, and that Harry alone can calm Draco after his.

Harry is bi, and he’s proud of that. Unlike having a half-giant break down a door to inform Harry that magic is real and that he has the power to wield it, unlike arriving in the wizarding world to find himself revered for something he doesn't even remember doing, unlike the role he played in the war, forced to fight, pawn-like, an evil above all others—he figured out his sexuality all by himself, after realizing that a handsome man is as likely to catch his eye as a beautiful woman. He grows to revel in the once terrifying act of coming out; he rebels against the expectations he's faced his entire life by taking every opportunity to remind people of this facet of his identity that is so wholly his own. Coming out becomes self-care.

And his relationship with Draco is something that shocked fans and friends alike—but it’s something he wants, more than anything, and it makes him feel more alive than he has since dying.

So, when they announce their upcoming nuptials by taking out a full-page ad in the Daily Prophet, it’s more for themselves than for the reaction they know they’ll elicit. It’s a proclamation—and a promise—of the love they will never apologize for.

A look at something I wrote every month in 2020. All of the above excerpts can be read in order at this link, and below I’ve noted a little on where I was each month and why I chose each piece. In short: I greatly improved my writing schedule, spent a lot of time writing a novel, and edited the front half of Forest Castles.

JANUARY - THE ONE AND ONLY UNIVERSE OF KAY RAINIER (unpublished)

I discussed beginning KAY last year in 2019′s Year in Review, and this year I wrote it for three months straight. Every day I would write for at least 15 minutes, usually more; the project’s at about 70k right now.

FEBRUARY - THE ONE AND ONLY UNIVERSE OF KAY RAINIER (unpublished)

Unfortunately, I didn’t have a set time for writing, so I’d consistently push ‘daily’ writing off until 5:30 AM the next day. My sleep schedule tanked, and I got sick with a mystery illness.

MARCH - THE ONE AND ONLY UNIVERSE OF KAY RAINIER (unpublished)

I struggled a lot to function like a normal human being due to my terrible sleep schedule. I’m sorry to be such a downer! It gets better in the next month, I promise. I did write some wonderful scenes here. 

APRIL - So Easily ($5 on Patreon)

I prioritized my sleep schedule, deciding to use Camp NaNo as a break from daily writing. I expected to begin again in May, but knew I wouldn’t force myself to write at all this month in favor of fixing my sleep schedule. Curiously, despite that, I wrote So Easily, a short story about Constantine and his (late) wife, Julia. 

MAY - Exhaustively (read online)

You may remember Exhaustively from quite a while back. I’m working on editing it again so that I can send a bound physical version to a beloved Patron. It’s incredibly hard, because I love the version I posted online! And that, of course, is still available to read. During this month I didn’t write very much, again prioritizing sleep.

JUNE - The Traveler Wife (read online)

I won the Reedsy contest with a short story that hit me out of nowhere about the Twin Paradox and escapism in difficult times. Many people have left wonderful comments; I’m glad that this work managed to reach such a wide audience. 

JULY - If Lespere Had Just Done Her Fucking Job Then Maybe This Wouldn’t Have Happened (But She Didn’t So Donnelly Hooked Up With An Alien) (unpublished)

Running down on an impossible deadline, I wrote a science fiction alien romance short story in three days. This, of course, is not that; it’s a largely better science fiction alien romance story I wrote after having a fascinating dream. It’s not yet finished, and as the name implies, it will be NSFW. Technically this counted for my miscellaneous Camp NaNo challenge (25k), which I’m confident I hit, but I forgot to update the widget on the site. Whoops.

AUGUST - Your Father’s Son ($1 on Patreon)

I had this immense, sudden urge to write a short story about a younger Kay for my Patrons. After all, when I’m not posting much from my longer projects, it can be hard to get a feel for the characters, and I owed my incredible Patreon supporters some truly special content-- not just this story, but an explanation of every edit I made from beginning to end, plus a bonus AP Lit-ready analysis of the piece as a whole.

SEPTEMBER - I Went To The Hospital To Get Tested for COVID (unpublished)

Came down with COVID symptoms, including an inability to breathe; went to the hospital to get tested and then went home and spent a week in what I can only describe as delirium. Needless to say, writing slowed. I started writing about the experience, but stopped when I got to this excerpt because I was getting overly emotional and I needed to think about something else.

OCTOBER - Halloween Drabble 1/3 (read online)

You know yves. needs to deliver the Halloween content! So I wrote three quick little drabbles, the last of which I posted just a day ago. I’ll have to plan better for next year.

NOVEMBER - Forest Castles (first two chapters)

My best NaNoWriMo ever-- I won with 60k! Of course, I was Rebelling, editing Forest Castles to finally make a dent in the project. This not only worked, but it’s kept me editing every day in addition to another 45 minutes of writing! This excerpt is one I wrote afresh this year, since the previous draft did not excite me enough. I’m very happy with the new Chapter 6.

DECEMBER - THE ONE AND ONLY UNIVERSE OF KAY RAINIER (unpublished)

I wrote so many things in December, freed from the focus of NaNo and suddenly able to write a full hour a day, that I couldn’t possibly give you a full list here. Please accept this scene I wrote non-chronologically for KAY; a strategy that’s quite new to me. 

This year, I overwhelmingly improved in balancing Tumblr, life, and writing. I’ve written far more than you can imagine from just this peek, and even when I took breaks, I still got things done. Including a consistent Patreon!

This upcoming year, I hope to improve at finishing the projects I’ve begun in the past. This means editing Forest Castles, and also going back to get a first draft done of KAY and some of the short stories displayed here.

Sherlock Holmes stories (classical)

December Drabbles (complete) - 31 short stories written for the popular Hades Lord of the Dead's December Calendar Challenge of Awesomeness (2013).  My first attempt at challenge writing -- due to the nature of the challenge, there is no specific genre.

A Series of One-Shots (ongoing... probably) - Shorts and one-shots, mostly written to prompts. Even I have no idea what might happen next.

The Adventure of Winterbourne House (complete) - Holmes and Watson are very unwelcome guests when they arrive in a little Yorkshire village at the request of a nervous client.

No Such Thing (complete) - Holmes is forced to leave an injured Watson alone on a deserted footpath in order to get help. Is all that the doctor experiences thereafter a mere reaction to shock and fear in his vulnerable state, or could there be a paranormal explanation? This story was written in response to a prompt from Watson's Woes, the LiveJournal community.

The Freezing Moor (complete) - Watson might have wanted to join his friend in his excursion to begin with, but as the slight snowstorm became a vision-reducing blizzard, soaking both himself and his companion and chilling them to the bone, he started to regret it. As, it would seem, did Holmes.

Seasonal Stories (complete) - My response to Hades Lord of the Dead's December Calendar Challenge of Awesomeness (2014).

To Return From Death (complete) - Holmes may not know it just yet, but he is fast approaching the end of his hiatus. All he wants now is to be reunited with his Boswell and walk the beloved streets of his London, but he has his fears and doubts - London may have changed dramatically and Watson may not want to forgive him. Chapter 10 revised 15-09-14 as I have never much liked it.  Rated T for drug usage.

The Singular Package (complete) - A package arrives at Baker Street from from overseas. Upon inspection, it is found to contain a blanket which has been wrapped in plain writing paper, as if for protection. Why would anyone send such a parcel?

Toby to the Rescue (complete) - When Holmes disappears without a trace, Watson fears that something might have happened to him and becomes determined to search for the Great Detective. Fortunately, he has Toby to assist him.

Slick Cobblestones (complete) - A walk in the rain turns to something much more unpleasant and Holmes is given a new opportunity to witness Doctor Watson's skills as a physician.

Inexplicable (complete) - Holmes and Watson are asked to look into the inexplicable laming of a gentleman's valuable horses. It should be simple enough - hardly a challenge, for a man of Holmes' powers.

Powers of Deduction (complete) - A beaten Holmes can only be saved by the deductive powers of a friend.

Locked Out (complete) - A short story that I wrote for WAdvent (Watson's Woes, Livejournal). Watson returns from his club to find the keys missing from his pocket. What is a fellow to do?

Tales of December (incomplete - only 16 stories out of 31) - 2015's entries for Hades Lord of the Dead's December Calendar Challenge of Awesomeness.

The Most Winning Woman (complete) - Holmes remembers the most winning woman that he ever met, during one of his darker moments. Rated K+ for mentions of drug usage and general unpleasantness, but no graphic description.

Home at Last (complete) - Sometimes, it is just a relief to come home (especially when there is a kind soul to welcome a fellow and ensure all requirements are met).

Fireside Tales (complete) - My answer to the December Calendar Challenge of Awesomeness 2018, hosted by Hades. This year, I am collaborating with my boys, Paul and David.

Snowed In (complete) - Sussex can be a lonely place in the winter months. Particularly when one finds oneself snowed in, a prisoner in one's own home.

Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century stories

Time Shifts (complete) - 1st story of my personal series.   A grieving Holmes is ill with influenza and, with nothing to distract him, is forced to face the emotion he has been doing his best to ignore.

One Wish (complete) - 2nd story.  Holmes' behaviour and outlook has not improved much since his illness (in Time Shifts) and both Lestrade and Watson are becoming increasingly concerned. It all comes to a head when their friend begins to disregard his own health and safety needlessly as a result.

Whose Idea Was This Anyway? (complete) - Deleted scene from One Wish.

Festivities in the 22nd Century (complete) - A challenge I set myself: a story per day for the duration of December, plus New Year’s Day.  This is set at Christmas, 2104.

An Exercise in Tact (complete) - Holmes always tries to be tactful, but there are days that warrant more care than usual. This story is set in the February of 2105.

Hi hi! We’re all desperate for something to post about so I’m issuing a new challenge to the writers in the fandom, if you dare: rank your fics from best to worst. Not necessarily just to focus on negatives, you can take your own approach! But IMO, we grow by acknowledging our weaknesses.

I haven’t read any back recently but these are the impressions in my ol’ noggin:

Ampersands - This is due to the fact that it’s the most recent, so I haven’t had as much time to start really hating it. I also hated it so much while writing it that I felt a little more pleasantly surprised by the finished version? Pretty okay in my memory, scared to read again to confirm. Some clunkier sections for sure, not broadly appealing and took far too long, but kind of funny and probably the least bad I’ve got to offer. Like a solid 7/10, I don’t think I’ve peaked higher than that.

On Oysters and Black Water - Used to be my favorite, I wish I could say I still like it more than I do. I do enjoy the ideas and enjoy some imagery, and I stand by giving Stu more (outraged!) autonomy on Plastic Beach, but the dialogue’s rough in spots and it’s overwritten. Even in a setting where I should be able to avoid accidental Americanisms among the Brits, I do still manage to fuck that up, so well done. Mostly saved because I do think it’s at least a unique Plastic Beach take.

Coffin Dancer - Not necessarily better in quality than the fics after, but it was the first bigger project and only real “AU” I’ve written, and I do have some lingering fondness even though it’s actually kinda face-scrunching to read back. Why is there so much detail about digging? Why is Sebastian fallen-money? The Niccals family are plot devices. Very unnatural dialogue. The gothic setting slightly disguises my overwriting, so that’s sneaky and beneficial. Not really a very compelling characterization of Murdoc, I’d write him a little nastier or meaner this time. Even in an AU, “selfless” feels like a totally wrong character trait for him.

Midnight Coward - Lower half of the barrel from here on. I don’t really rate this or November better/worse than each other, these spots are interchangeable. I feel like this might even be worse because it’s older, but it felt better received at the time? There’s at least one line that I remember liking about Stu’s hands, but otherwise very awkward, and some real clunkers of dialogue in this.

November Hasn’t Come - About the same as Midnight Coward, but I think more forgettable. Ideas that seemed unique when I started but were pretty poorly executed. No real standout descriptions, and a few that stand out in a bad way. Pretty "oof” dialogue. Above all it just doesn’t... seem to breathe as a story, but we needed erectile dysfunction fic. (Did we really though?)

Same Old Cadillac - Hitting the bottom of the barrel. This probably should be lower, but it was written in two days for 2Doc Week so I kinda want to cut it some slack. It was fun to participate, but I do not think this drabble holds up or is worth reading now after that challenge week. It’s at least mercifully short! As is obvious, I didn’t know what the Cotswolds really were besides quaint. I think this feels like a stupid suggestion coming from either of them now. I thought if I wrote something more tender it would be better received, but I suspect people could tell I’m not gifted in that department, I think this was recognized as pretty dire right away. I lost a subscriber after posting this on AO3 and I don’t blame them. (Also clearly knocking off the concept of Margate in Yearz but without the extra layers, thankfully wasn’t bold enough to actually try and write them in this location. Nothing is shakier than me trying to write English things... this ship was a mistake.)

Berries, Unripe - This is actually kind of unreadable. Probably the most overwritten, and all of my fics are already competing for that title. Dialogue’s unnatural, bad references to Coleridge because I was still trying to convince people I was smart, awkward breaching of the main topic. Just... there’s nothing else to say for it, it’s clunky and overwrought. I remember being so proud of this at the time, and now I feel guilty that this was a present! I really appreciate that anon being so nice about it. If you’re still out there anon, I will write something else for you.

I Couldn’t Feel, So I Would Touch - Baby’s first 2Doc and the first fic I’d written in like 7 years, and it shows. This is my most viewed and it is also easily the worst. There is nothing salvageable in this. I don’t just think it’s my worst, I think it’s really bad on any objective scale. Take a final shot for this descriptor because it’s Clunky(tm) and faux-poetic, the POV changes halfway through, I don’t have a good handle on the characters so the attempts to be thoughtful fail miserably. In complete honesty I would delete it if I wasn’t a greedy little piglet who would be sad to see my AO3 stats drop. :(

I don’t say all that just to be negative! I just, err... well, I guess I do tend to focus on the negatives, haha. But I’ve only been writing again since July 2018 and I think I’ve improved a lot in that time, I do think looking at the material shows that practice does equal improvement-- so most of it being sorta garbage means if I keep going, I’ll keep improving. I don’t think I’m really at “good” yet, but I’m at “better.” That’s really all we can be, because the milestone for “good” will simply keep moving. Right, anyway, there’s my long post talking about myself, please do this as well if you’ve got like 3+ fics to rank, I’d like to know what you make of your work, which ones you still like best or which you’d rewrite!

this has been the most wild fuckin year so let’s do a Year in Review shall we

in terms of internet and fandom life, that is. my real life has been atrociously boring but who cares about real life amirite folx

january probably the only calm month of the year.  i spent the first day of the month watching the brazilian inauguration in burgos, spain with one headphone in, while ordering for my family in a restaurant where nobody spoke english (my sister speaks decent spanish, but my whole family has like 8194814 food restrictions so it kind of went past her level of ability). translating between spanish and english with portuguese in one year was kind of awesome. i watched bodyguard and it was amazing!  what else...in january i briefly owned the issue of spanish GQ with Luka on the cover which i then forgot about until november. other than that...? nada.  the calm before the storm. (fav music)

february was so long ago that i keep forgetting how insane its 28 days were.  probably the wildest month of the year really. i got involved in an absolutely batshit and exclusive group chat with a famous person’s family member (which must remain confidential). it was all sunshine and rainbows for a week and a half and it then devolved into the most absolutely insane Lord of the Flies situation ever--it turned into 1 main chat and then 1 chat that was less puritanical than the main chat, and that chat spawned another chat that didn’t trust the previous chat, and then that chat had a massive argument and a like 6-person bitchy chat modded by a gay guy who does voodoo (shoutout to ALCIDES) spawned from that one.  i made it into every level of group chat and was asked by the tiny bitchy chat to spy on the other bitchy chat (i did not lol). i was a member of the tiny bitchy chat until i got a new phone and was logged out of whatsapp for like a month.  these words can’t even convey what this chat was like--oh and did i mention it was all conducted in only my 3rd-best language? it’s no wonder my weird ass survived middle school almost entirely unscathed.  as this was winding down, on the very last day of the month, I found out about Justin’s involvement in the SNC-Lavalin scandal and decided to go public about my years-long boner for him; Lavscam definitely changed the course of the rest year ~ Oh, also i began helping to repair a friendship that had had some Drama go down so that was p cool ~ (fav music)

march was a Time. The insanity of lavscam helped me finally finish the macdeau I started writing the previous December when a bunch of tungelr people called me disgusting for writing it.  i wrote my first straight-up serious explicit porn in years which has wound up being the third-longest thing i’ve ever published on ao3. Also, Hozier released Wasteland, Baby! which made a huge impact on me as well.  i spent like half of march staying up till 3:30 am writing said Long Fic, and i was firmly in the closet about stanning manu. also justin almost got a vote of no confidence or something and he got busted for eating a chocolate bar during a parliamentary all-nighter.  (fav music)

in april i wrote a ton of fanfic thanks to declining mental health(tm).  i think this is when i started my emmanuyell insta account and became really into making weird edits (which i still love doing just...don’t anymore.)  i started meeting some cool people thanks to macdeau.  what else happened in april? i feel like it wasn’t actually too eventful other than writing a lot of fanfic and being Annoyed about manu.  feel free to jog my memory lol.  oh i think i wrote “Okay so who from the French national team are we gonna ship Manu with” on twitter after seeing photos of manu + antoine griezmann at the World Cup but nothing came of that...at that time... (fav music)

may saw me having to deal with my shit mental health and up my meds but that seems to have had a good effect because i seem to not be too depressed to write in the winter/fall anymore! it was the 2nd anniversary of manu’s election and at the Christchurch Call in paris, macdeau took that amazing fairytale princess photo together that was completely unrivalled in Gay Shippy Feels moments until ivan went out of his way to kiss luka during the el clásico gameplay last wednesday. someone wrote ao3′s first griezmanu drabble and at the end manu gets down on his knees in front of antoine, takes off his shoes for him, and sucks his dick, and i achieved another state of being entirely.  my sister graduated from grad school and when we went down to DC for the weekend i went to eat at this restaurant manu famously ate at while there and ordered the same stuff he did and i have no idea how he consumed all that grease.  i learned about the song O Come, O Come, Emmanuel *snort*. i feel like other things happened in may too?  OH YES--i got the idea for my magnum opus, Trophy Boyfriend, and started to write it. the first scene i wrote was justin blowing manu in the hallway. then the same day i wrote the scene at the airport (which was the ending for a solid month and half till i realized it shouldn’t be), and the saddest scene in the fic--but we’ll stop to open presents.  oh! and i stumbled across the macronists discord chat which is such a delightful little community *weepy sniffles* (fav music)

june was Eventful.  a french neonazi on tumblr told me to go let manu fuck me in the ass because i was a fucking degenerate.  what a start!  then came the ceremony in which manu awarded everyone on the french national team the legion of honor medal and the way he and antoine looked at each other was truly...Wait it was the 3rd Gay Shippy Feels moment of the year.  as soon as the ceremony was over i wrote a fic about it and haven’t looked back.  between this + watching almost every 2018 World Cup game and the women’s world cup (during which I cried during argentina’s last game because of that miraculous penalty) i finally achieved my years-long goal of getting into Futbol(TM).  Antoine dropped his spotify playlist and my crush on him turned into Intense Love (TM) and also he introduced me to some legit awesome artists.  which led to (fav music)

july, in which i wrote “ça c’est ma dope” which is definitely the best thing i’ve written since i wrote “modernity towering in front of the sky” almost exactly 10 years before. got embroiled in Soccer Transfer Drama and learned its pain for the first time (unfortunately, since i wound up attaching my heart-wagon to barça’s Suddenly Least Favorite Player, the transfer drama pain has...never ended) became a full-fledged culé, O the joy O the honor.  i wanted to ship antoine with someone on the team, which in their current chemistry-less season is a real challenge, but after seeing a few photos i decided it would be fun to casually ship antoine + ivan rakitic (partially because, ever since i went from Enemies to Lovers with the croatia NT during the World Cup, he was one of the only players i knew anything about other than messi, suárez, and piqué lmao). while looking on ao3 to see what kind of headcanons people had about him--and the fic is definitely in general better than what’s out there about antoine, which is perplexing because antoine is much easier to write than ivan--i found That Amazing Rakidric Fic and thought “oh wait that ship makes a lot of sense” and started also shipping ivan and luka with the fire of a thousand suns.  oh and my air conditioner was broken for like 3 weeks. i worked on more fics, seriously outlining the path of Trophy Boyfriend, and my music taste was killer. (fav music)

in august i finished Trophy Boyfriend in my neighborhood Starbucks after writing the scene that was giving me the most trouble (the scene at the beginning where they’re organizing their book collection). the fic has made multiple people cry and people disagree on whether justin’s choice at the end was the right one and god i’m so proud of it.  Instantly went on to write ‘i might not mind,’ a lively lighthearted Friends to Lovers ivantoine~ romp which was definitely going to be a one-off and i was definitely not going to get an extra celeb crush out of it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, (fav music)

in september ivantoine became A Thing in my mind and it’s a whole ongoing slow-burn character-arcy series that has taken a very different turn than i had expected. i’m not saying it’s like, the most deep writing of all time, but it’s gone to some interesting places emotionally. honestly, ships and boners aside, the concept of a person who made some really stupid homophobia 101 comments many years ago slowly realizing over and over again that they have gay feelings for a man who seems rather comfortable with gayness is a fascinating one and one that’s really cool to explore in writing.  Or at least, i think so.  in many ways ivan is my most unreliable narrator because of the many layers of Discomfort, Emotion and Repression at play in the fic while he’s interacting with this pretty cheery and uncomplicated seeming-dude who’s still perceptive enough to sort of know what’s going on (and that’s not even adding in the star player/falling from grace former rockstar dynamic!!!)  i know in the current climate it’s Not Allowed to write about someone who said a bad, but luckily i’m too old to give a Fuck. ivantoine is hard to write but it’s my bff’s favorite ship of mine and has a few other excited fans on ao3 which tbh is kind of an accomplishment considering i made it up out of thin air and it’s not something you’d ever think would be a thing. instantly also developed ‘getting called out about ivan by a child on the internet’ as a goal.  and...i achieved my dream of leading high holiday services!!! (fav music)

october had more high holiday services and i worked a lot on certain fics (including d*janfic which would be fun to finish). i came up with the idea of a Very Long Rakidric Fic based on the translation of a gorgeous croatian folk song i sang in college (Janko fell asleep under the poplar/My dear and beloved/My beautiful dark eyes/Look at me/Under the poplar's golden branch/My dear and beloved/My beautiful dark eyes/Look at me/I tore off the golden branch/My dear and beloved/My beautiful dark eyes/Look at me--in which the golden branch is a reference to a way to get into the underworld). decided to start quarter-assedly learning croatian for fun.  Fun...ha.  other than fangirling a lot and watching the croatian NT play, october was pretty uneventful? i think? Justin got reelected and mauricio didn’t ;( (fav music)

in november i finally achieved my dream of having a literal child on the internet call me out about being attracted to a homophobe.  (they were a madridista even!) accidentally started writing some more rakidric and now i’m seriously hooked.  also accidentally came out of the closet about the secret crush i’d been harboring on luka modric and then one fateful day in the ihop on 14th st i realized i’d had this crush already and repressed it from my memory. Don’t do that kids! now it’s Hurting Really Bad. Ivan dropped the most pathetic and candid interview like...ever and i hope “¿Cómo puede disfrutar uno? Jugando al fútbol. ¿Cómo se siente mi hija pequeña cuando le quitan un juguete? Triste. Yo me siento igual. Me han quitado la pelota, me siento triste” goes down in the history of most epic futbol quotes of all time.  (still haven’t actually been able to watch this because no one has uploaded it anywhere)  What else...............Am i forgetting anything? i celebrated my birthday with @tender-vittles in epic fashion after two years of Not doing that, and turned 32 going on 15.  enjoyed my first-ever “x reader” fic (zlatko dalic x reader LOL) and finished “drive your plow over the bones of the dead” which was real fucking good. i saw hozier live and it was a religious experience and i unexpectedly cried during nina cried power and then called myself “Luka B” when ordering at the classy taco bell across the street after getting a glimpse of alexxx ryan in the flesh. now it’s december and my seasonal depression is a little worse than it’s been the past few years but i’m managing.  still shipping and writing and i just got called out about ivan again last week.  i’m 2 for 2 here!  el clásico was boring but also it was gay and my heart my heart my heart ! Anything could happen in the last 10 days of this year and honestly...I’m pretty sure I’m ready.

Most importantly this year, despite it being not that great in a lot of ways, I developed a lot more self confidence, made many important realizations, and became a lot more peaceful (despite how this post makes me sound) and wiser and less bitter and pessimistic.  And i became outspoken enough about antisemitism on the left to lose friends over it...3 for 3.  i can’t say i’m displeased with these developments.

uh...i’m capable of having decent titles?? thing is, my titles tend to be on the nose or else something i forget i need till the point i’m posting a fic, but i like Everywhere Cats partly because it was very much inspired by a simple children’s song i remember my sister playing when she first started learning piano. i also like Facing Reality as a title because of the word play i can be clever

Worst title?

many of them are so...plain that i’m not sure i can pick just one. sure, they tell you what the story is about, but there’s nothing hidden in them...they’re so bland. throw a dart at a board with all my one-word titles and you’ll probably hit something

i think my first lines in general are...decent?? nothing spectacular, just meant to convey what’s going on and why it’s important (or that’s what i try to do at least), but out of laziness i’m going with the one from Everywhere Cats:

Hunk settled his helmet onto his head as he walked into the Yellow Lion’s hangar, feeling wonderfully light at the prospect of this mission.

Best last line?

Adrift made me so emotional when i was writing it that i have to use this one:

i tend to end my fics rather abruptly (i really really hate unnecessary bits tacked on when everything is pretty much resolved) and/or on dialogue and i’m usually thoughtful of how i end it so i’m not even gonna skim through the rest of my fics because this one from Assassins is just so boring:

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

yes, yes i did. also looking back at last year’s list i didn’t even get any of the goals i set accomplished...whoops??

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?

uh...Keith/Matt i guess?? maybe Allura/Lance too because i really don’t like that pairing now (though i used to be indifferent or else somewhat like it) so it’s like a retrospective “well i can’t believe i managed to write them as a romantic pairing”

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

always will i answer this question with scaled to size because it actually does make me happy, especially thinking of all the pain and suffering i’m only somewhat exaggerating i went through while conceiving of it thanks to a computer mishap (and, tbh, my own neglect), and ultimately all it took to revive it was a timely prompt from the Pidgance Positivity Discord and dare i say it ended up far better than planned??

uh well i’ve never posted anything more explicit than simple foreplay so i suppose that would be Final Lifeline but i also want to make note of like a masochistic moth to dragonflame because i think i did well with a touch of Unresolved Sexual Tension and Bad Press was almost candid about that sort of thing and Lance almost propositioned Pidge by accident

Saddest story?

it’s probably a toss-up between  Final Lifeline (major character death on top of a possible awful future), Misfortune (predicted character death), and a small step (they can’t really be together)

Most fun?

Bad Press was a riot while i was working on it. Everywhere Cats was a lot of fun too, as was scaled to size (though tbh i have fun writing a vast majority of my fics...)

Story with single sweetest moment?

nothing really stands out to me at the moment so this is mostly a cop-out (and Pidge and Lance are at their best when they’re teasing each other anyway) from scaled to size:

“Is there…any room for the brave and dashing knight that rescued you in that future?” Lance whispered.

“Maybe, if you find him.”

“Hey!” Lance exclaimed, pulling away from him slightly.

Pidge snickered and wrapped her arms around his neck. “But there’s room for the brave boy that grew into his too-big britches.”

“Yes, but I’m a knight now too,” Lance pointed out.

“Should I call you Sir Lance now?” Pidge raised an eyebrow while one of her hands wandered into his hair and pulled his head down. “But I think I like Lance better…”

Hardest story to write?

most likely Displaced because i’m not really into Keith/Matt as a romantic pairing (and it ended up more gen anyway) and i wasn’t really enamored by the idea so i was mostly just trying to wrap up what i had without getting into the concept too much

the night i bolted out of bed possessed by a spark of inspiration thanks to this art to hammer out Masquerade will forever live in infamy

collaborations, for one, not that it’s especially risky, but i’d never done one so that was fun!! Smack, Kiss, Fall in Love oddly enough validated by typical “write on impulse” style though...

for another, i published a fic in a zine!! also i participated in a Bang and a gift exchange, neither of which i’d done before

also posting the start of a multichapter fic not yet finished is a risk that hasn’t quite payed off yet *sweats*

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

no idea. i’m decidedly not a very goal-oriented person, but for now i think i’ll keep it simple and finish my four dubiously active WIPs, write something amazing for the Plance Mini Bang (which i’m also mod-ing oh boy), and outline as often as possible to ease the writing

Coming soon: another post where I'll pick my favourite fics posted by other writers in each month of the year, which will (hopefully) help other writers feel good and (also hopefully) give readers something new to enjoy, or remind them to revisit a favourite. (This one will be hard because of all the quality fic that’s been posted this year, but I’ll do my best!)

My 2018 Fic Review Roundup

January – Queen of Swords (T)

ST:DSC, ST:MU | Mirror Burnham x Mirror Lorca, Mirror Georgiou x Mirror Lorca

Okay, so I didn’t have a whole lot of choice for this month because this was the only fic I wrote. Nonetheless, I don’t hate it. I’m grateful to Discovery for exciting my spleen over the Mirror Universe status of Gabriel Lorca (about which I am still, and will forever be, bitter) as it was the only thing that inspired me to write about anything during my post-Christmas mental wasteland.

It’s about Mirror Michael Burnham’s competitive, twisted affair with Mirror Lorca, but it’s really more about the toxic relationship between Burnham and her foster mother, Emperor Georgiou. It’s about escaping abuse and trying to find a new, better way, but not having the tools to do so. It’s about being caught between loyalties and being unable to choose. And there are some heavy Macbeth references in there, but I see Michael more in the role of Hamlet, though her fate at the end of the story is ambiguous.

February – Open Hand (M)

ST:VOY | Janeway x Chakotay

This was another dry month for the muse, so again, I had only one choice for Fic of the Month, and it was one I’d never planned on writing. @writtenndust commented in a discord chat about the role played by Janeway’s and Chakotay’s hands in a number of episodes throughout the show (these are the things we shippers analyse in crazy detail), and I suddenly couldn’t stop thinking about hand-clasping being the most contact we saw in canon between these two and how many opportunities were missed, and then I climbed inside Janeway’s head as she was debriefed post-homecoming and she got very introspective about it.

I really like this fic. I like its melancholy feel, Janeway’s self-understanding and her calm acceptance that sometimes you don’t get the fairytale ending. And I like that we do get the fairytale after all.

March – Warmth and Colour (T)

ST:TNG | Guinan x Lwaxana Troi

Once again, the only fic I published all month (are we sensing a pattern here?) This one was for @gluecookie for the Trek Rarepair Swap, and I don’t mind admitting that it took forever to get into. I absolutely love both of these characters but I’d never thought about shipping them before, and I couldn’t word for some reason, and the more I tried to find the right angle the more twisted up I got. In the end, though I’d wanted to give my recipient something meatier, I ended up with a pretty light story full of banter and a couple of slightly more serious personal revelations.

The most amazing thing about this story? My recipient not only loved it, they gifted me back with fanart they drew themselves. This is the most wonderful thing that can happen to a fanfic writer! (Incidentally, I’ve been lucky enough to have been gifted a soundtrack for The Bitter End by @cheile and a moodboard for Laced and Bound by @supernovacoffee and I couldn’t be happier about it.) And I’m actually planning a sequel to Warmth and Colour, hopefully sometime early in 2019.

April – Displaced (T)

ST:TNG, ST:DSC, ST:MU | Lorca x Garrett

What do you know, I have two fics and two drabbles to choose from this month!

This is one of the weirder fics I’ve written. It not only involves an impossible pairing (Rachel Garrett is from a different century to Gabriel Lorca), it’s set on an alternate plane of existence: both of them are dead, and they meet in some kind of limbo or spiritual waiting room. Each of them has one last chance to connect with another human being, but then each gets to make the choice between life and death.

This story is also an attempt to explain what happened to Prime Lorca, and it’s not a happy ending; there’s a sequel, In the Wrong Light, that’s a whole lot darker than this fic.

May – Abandoned (M)

ST:VOY | Janeway x Torres

Wow, May was a great month for writing – I bashed out 10 fics in 3 fandoms at a total of over 25,000 words! This was mainly thanks to the inspiring prompt memes on tumblr – a kiss + a ship and six sexy words – and consequently, most of these works veered on the nsfw side. (I have a stack more prompts to write to in 2019, as well.)

As for a favourite? I’m going to have to go with Abandoned. It’s set during Year of Hell, one of my all-time favourite Voyager episodes, and it’s hurt/comfort and angst, and it’s about love that’s unspoken and complicated but no less real for it. And I like B’Elanna being the strong one for the captain, because in canon we only really get to see Janeway being strong for her.

June – To Those Who Wait (M)

ST:VOY | Sekaya x Phoebe Janeway

This is actually a work in progress – I’ve planned another three chapters – and it fits into a larger universe of loosely-connected stories that @jhelenoftrek and I have been blathering about for over a year now and we are definitely going to get started on the series that brings them all together in 2019, aren’t we Helen?

Anyway, I’m fond of this story. It was a birthday present for Helen in which I tried to combine a number of her favourite things because she’s one of my favourite people, and it’s the only Sekaya x Phoebe Janeway story on AO3, which is kind of cool. And Phoebe is sexy and angry and mouthy, and Sekaya is gorgeous and lonely and rebellious, and Mark is weird and self-aware and ridiculously in love with Kathryn, who’s damaged and brave and brittle, and Chakotay is confident and sarcastic and big-brotherly and has no idea of the tragedy that’s in store for him and his sister.

And J/C pass like ships in the night long before they meet in canon, and their siblings have a passionate, tempestuous one-night-stand which (spoiler alert) isn’t going to fit the one-night-stand category in the end.

July – Trigger (E)

ST:VOY | Janeway x Chakotay

Another fic prompted by tumblr memes, and one I’d been wanting to write for quite a while. It’s not my only Equinox-inspired fic (another of my favourite episodes) and probably won’t be my last. I wanted to explore Janeway’s loss of control in this one – her anger and bitterness and rage, and the way she takes them out on the people she loves – and I wanted more of Chakotay supporting her publicly but in private, not backing down one whit.

And I wanted really hot sex. Hopefully I achieved that.

(August and September are fic-free because I was posting The Epic. I’ll come back to that one.)

October – Nothing Like a Dame (T)

ST:VOY | Paris x Torres

Ah, fictober, how I loved you. For those who don’t already know, I decided to embark on fictober at approximately 8pm on September 30, despite having a thousand other things I should have been committing to. Just to make it trickier, I also decided I would write a missing-scene ficlet to every single daily prompt, and I’d keep it canon-consistent and in order of episode airing. As you can imagine, this was quite a challenge, and resulted in me producing almost 29,000 words in a single month.

Of these 31 ficlets, I think this one is my favourite. The two protagonists aren’t even really main characters on the show – they’re mindwiped alter egos in a World War II holodeck program – but they’re still relatable both to the show’s characters and to the world today. What ‘Brigitte’ experiences as a collaborateur horizontale is the kind of thing women go through in every war, and what ‘Bobby’ learns from her is a lesson a lot of men in power today could stand to learn.

It’s also given me an idea for a Killing Game-based fic series, so stay tuned for that, sometime in 2027, probably.

(November is fic-free because I hate the only fic I posted that month so much I deleted it from AO3)

December – Desperate Measures (E)

ST:VOY | Janeway x Chakotay, Janeway x other male, Chakotay x Seven, Kim x Seven

I mean, I had to include The Epic. And strictly speaking I’ve been writing it for well over a year, but it counts. At over 70,000 words so far – my longest fic to date – it absobloodylutely counts.

This is an Endgame-fixing post-DQ action adventure featuring angst, romance, conspiracy, drama and smut. Perfect for the holiday season, right? (And no promises, but I’ll do my level best to finish it before the end of January!)

2018 Writer Review

I was tagged by the incredible @apostatetabris to reflect upon my writing in 2018. It was my first year in fandom and writing fanfic (I started this blog in July) and it’s been a wild ride ever since, so I’m delighted to look back on such an important year for me milestone-wise. 

Words written in 2018:  560,680 (oh...oh my god)

Number of short fics/drabbles written in 2018: Oh man, I would have such a hard time tracking this down. I tagged kinda messily in the beginning. I know I have about 20 stored on my wordpress, and that was from both prompts and my own volition...so, I’m gonna estimate anywhere from 30-45ish? I know I have some in my tumblr archives untagged or mislabeled. 

Number of fic chapters written in 2018: 126 Chapters! Oh boy, you can tell now I prefer my longer ordeals when writing...sheesh. 

Number of chaptered fics completed in 2018: I finished...5, according to my Ao3. A small multi-part Trev x Cullen angst fic was my first and boy do I cringe reading it -- but I do just to remind myself of how far I’ve come. The others are Olivia x Cassandra’s romance fics. 

Fandoms: Dragon Age 24/7 because that is all my emotional pea brain can handle at the moment, haha.

Proudest achievements:

I started writing, period. I remember being so intimidated, like a fish out of water. I had no idea what the “rules” were, what constituted decent fic, stuff like that. The fact that I started and kept at is is a achievement for me in and of itself.

I started two Inquisitor long fics (because I’m obviously mad). But they are stories that I love and deeply care about, and to me that is an accomplishment, too. 

Honestly, it isn’t my largest or most prolific chaptered fic, but “All That Glitters” is still to this day one of my favorite things I have ever written. It’s a wild plotline but I loved getting to write a thrilling piece, and a romantic one, and really challenge myself to explore the psychologies of my characters. I love it so much and am so proud that I stuck with it. 

Writing goals for 2019:

I want to write shorter pieces more often (haha). I want to do more drabbles and ficlets instead of just burning myself out on my long fics. I think I wrote quite a few in 2018 but I didn’t dedicate nearly as much energy to them as longer, multi-chaptered pieces. 

I want to allow myself to take breaks and breathers more often instead of hyper-fixating on storylines. I think it would be better, and my narratives would improve if I gave myself more time to formulate them.

 Finish at least one of my long fics (Lord have mercy).

Drabble: Chris & Ellie - July 2018

Happy hump day lovelies! I hope you all had a good day. It was my first day back to work... well sort of since I worked from home today... since Friday and it was rough getting up by a certain time instead of whenever I wanted.

Anyway, @mycapt-ohcapt (who is looking over these drabbles for me when she has time), mentioned that she was having trouble keeping up with where Chris and Ellie are in each story, so I thought I’d make a note about it now.

The timeline I’m using is the one I wrote in the Father’s Day 2019 story, specifically regarding where they were for various stages of the pregnancy. So here’s a quick cheatsheet.

January’s story took place in Oregon (with mentions of moving to NYC)

February, March, April and May’s stories all took place in NYC

June, July and August’s stories will be in Massachusetts

September, October and November’s stories will be in LA

December’s story will be in Oregon

“Happy birthday, sleepyhead,” Chris whispered as he climbed back into bed with Ellie. He’d already taken the dogs for their morning walk and fed them. Now he was ready to spoil his wife on her 34th birthday. Starting with a breakfast of decaf coffee and some saltines, since he'd heard her puking earlier in the morning.

“Wakey wakey,” he sang as he leaned over and kissed her cheek.

Ellie cracked an eye open and shot him a look that said she wasn’t amused by his chipper attitude.

“Movie day?” He suggested. “Or at least morning.” His eyes shifted toward the ceiling of their basement apartment at his mom's house and to the sound of their niece and nephews running around upstairs. “I think the kiddos have plans for you this afternoon.”

“I know, Stella spilled the beans last night,” Ellie replied with a small smile. She scooted closer to Chris and laid her head against his chest. “This growing a baby business is exhausting.”

“I know, but you’re doing an amazing job,” Chris told her. He wrapped an arm around her and held her close as she drifted back to sleep. While she slept, he read a book, enjoying the seemingly rare chance they got to spend a quiet day together.

It was nearly noon when Ellie decided she couldn't sleep anymore and got up to take a shower. Shooing the dogs out of the bathroom when they made to follow her. It took Chris offering them treats to lure the dogs away from the bathroom door as both Dodger and Daisy were super protective of Ellie right now.

After Ellie got out of the shower and got dressed, Chris braided her long hair for her and then they headed upstairs. The dogs came with them, but Mickey didn't budge from the dog bed he'd claimed.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AUNTIE!" their niece shouted the second they came up from the basement. She ran over and wrapped her arms around Ellie's waist.

"Thank you, bug," Ellie replied, hugging the little girl back.

The rest of the family, alerted to their presence by Stella, came into the kitchen and wished Ellie happy birthday, too. Stella and her brothers pulled Ellie from the kitchen to show them the presents they'd made for her.

Ellie was admiring the drawings when Scott, who'd come home for the month of July, handed her an iced half-caf coffee. He'd secretly be smuggling her coffee while he'd been home and she was going to miss him when he went back to LA.

"You're my hero," she praised, taking the coffee. She took a long draw on the straw and let out a content sigh after swallowing.

"And your favorite Evans brother," Scott said, recalling their ongoing joke. "If Chris asks, it's decaf." He kissed her cheek and then challenged the kids to flipping contest on the trampoline.

"I see your coffee dealer delivered again," Chris said as he stepped outside. "Bet he didn't tell you that I sent him a text asking him to get you that."

"No, he didn't mention that part," Ellie replied with a laugh. She took another sip of her coffee and smiled up at him with a look of pure bliss.

"It's that look that gave away your secret dealings with my brother," Chris informed her. He kissed her forehead.

"Don't tell Scott, but you'll always be my favorite Evans brother," Ellie told him. She raised herself onto her tiptoes and kissed him.

OHHH Our Page? Did you make your blog after the albums, or did you change your url? :o Wait... how long have you been a Shawol? And you do write pretty words! Hahaha... I need all the help T__T I have writer's block so often. I would like to do prompts, but I know I am not that great with sentence prompts. You wrote the Onew and Kihyun ones so quickly! (I may have requested them >->) and for me it seems to take forever to write anything. And yes Jinki is a blessing, but also rude😤 xD

Yeah, I started this blog in July 2018. But I’ve been writing kpop since 2010. Creating this blog was what broke a two years long writer’s block. 

I’ve been a Shawol since 2009. I got into kpop in May that year when I was laid up on the couch day in and out recovering from shattering my right leg in a horse riding accident. 

Is Kihyun also your bias? Lol, it’s looking like we have a few in common! 

I admit, it wasn’t easy in the beginning, but now I’m actively searching for prompts around me in everyday life that I could tackle writing most topics. It’s good that you know what you struggle with as a writer, but I hope you don’t limit yourself either. I used to consistently only write chaptered stories with 25+ chapters. My first drabble was one that I posted on here and man, it felt so weird to just write a few lines and leave it at that.

But with practice, you become comfortable and even confident with it. Sure, the likelihood of me writing something of only 100 words is slim, but I can now do it if I really have to. Challenging yourself in ways outside of what you’re comfortable with will make the stuff you do find easier to do even more effective, so I’ve found! 

Again, this is just advice and I’m not saying what works for me will work for you. But hopefully by experimenting with things you might not have experience with or confidence in may be a good approach to broaden your writing tools!
