Eating seasonally is practiced in Ayurveda as a way to to promote rejuvenation, as well as support physical and mental strength and digestion, in fact, in ayurveda, there is a special term for eating seasonally, known as ritucharya ——- July through October are Pitta time, so it is the time to stay cool (cool as a cucumber some might say, which is in season), calm and hydrated; eat more foods that are sweet, bitter, astringent and cooling —— You should be switching things up when it comes to your diet throughout the year, as you can benefit in various ways such as, increasing nutrient variety and nutrient content (new plant compound who dis), supporting your body’s natural nutritional needs (notice yourself craving sweet, cooling, fresh fruit in the summer vs warming/grounding founds in the winter), saving money (aka eating local produce that is specific to your region, shopping at the farmers market, locally sourced) —- As well as increasing your consumption of fresher food with higher nutritional value (you know like the strawberries that were just picked 2 hours ago at the farm, as opposed to be shipped several hours during the winter) —— How far did your food travel!? You will get extra credit for eating seasonally due to the environmental impact, (you know cutting back on fuel emission, long distance travel), as more than 1/2 of the fruit brought and almost 1/3 of the the vegetables bought in the US are imported —— Also lets be real, this might be a little hippy dippy for people, but we all know the taste difference between a fresh jersey tomato during the summer, as opposed to one you get from the supermarket during the winter —— Some summer approved foods include basically most of the things you’d find at your local farmers market or CO-OP, such as apricots, avocados, berries, cucumbers, eggplant, peaches, plums, tomatoes, watermelon, zucchini (where you might want to give some fall/winter foods such as Brussels, turnips, winter squash, carrots, broccoli a bit of a break)…go for herbal teas such as mint, hibiscus, dandelion and chicory as well! —— #briannaapproved #eatwiththeseasons #farmersmarket #eatseasonally #shoplocal #ayurveda #plantcompounds (at Ocean Grove, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCLQH95jOGQ/?igshid=xna8ki9jbp4g
