Life with Derek
this is pretty simple. I'm sharing a link to a petition to renew/continue Life with Derek/Life with Luca. I'm back in the fandom so I thought I'd share this.

Another good example of how Derek raises Edwin is the fact that Edwin never once goes to George for advice/when he's in a crisis first. He always goes to Derek first. ALWAYS. And could the argument be made that this is just normal behavior for a younger brother to go to his older brother that he looks up to? Sure. But I think it's very telling that Edwin always, without fail, talks to Derek first. This includes when Edwin is bullied and comes home with a black eye. (And I'm pretty sure even then once the parents found out, it was Nora who took the action and reached out to the bully's parents. Not George. If I'm remembering correctly, George really had nothing to do with that plot)
George's advice is almost always just... given. Not asked for. And I'm not saying it's bad advice (although it's usually questionable, but then again, so is Derek's) but his boys rarely ask for it.
No you're so right!!! Edwin always ALWAYS goes to Derek for advice. It's... Honestly, sometimes they treat George like a combination friend/landlord? Like... He's definitely not a FATHER, you know? Dad? Sure. But, like, not in a way that they really depend on.
Or, maybe they depend on George to be like George, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but they depend on him for other things.
And like... So, there's something about the differences in how Derek vibes with George vs how Edwin vibes with George that also makes me think that Edwin did what my little sister used to do: watch. My parents often tell us about how when we were young (admittedly, my sister and I are much closer in age (15 months difference) but still), my sister would watch *everything* I did. And if it got me in trouble, she wouldn't do it. I think my sister as a result has been the least disciplined of all of my parents' offspring, and she's still, like, one of the best people I know (I was the oldest, so I got disciplined... A lot because I was the first one and stubborn. Someone had to learn so the others could).
So it makes me think that Edwin just watched how Derek acted and was reacted to, and how he treats George and Abby, and just... Taught himself. He's smart, he could do it. And I think that's also why he mimics so much of Derek's behavior, but also why -- although he doesn't go to George for advice, there seems to be less... Tension between that dad-and-son duo.
Yeah.

Dasey Harry Potter au:
Derek: Hey! [Casey stalks up to him, furious]
Casey: [yanks his rucksack off his shoulder] You... [shoves him]
Casey: Complete... [throws a handful of leaves and twigs at him]
Casey: *Asshole*, Derek Venturi ! You had us worried for weeks, than you show up here and you say 'Hey'?!!! [rounds on Edwin]
Casey: Where's my wand, Edwin? Where's my wand? Edwin *nervous*: [hides it quickly] I don't know! Casey *angry*: Edwin Venturi, you give me my wand!
Casey*angrily turns back to Derek*: How did you even find us?!
Edwin *curious and desperate to change the subject*: How did you find us?
Derek: [takes out the Deluminator] With this. It doesn't just turn off lights. I don't know how it works, but Christmas morning, I was sleeping in this little bar, keeping away from some Snatchers, and I heard it.
Edwin *confused*: "It"?
Derek*with a soft look on his face*: A voice. Your voice, Casey. Coming out of it.
Casey: [Her arms are folded as she says this] And what exactly did I say, may I ask?
Derek: My name. Just my name. Like a whisper. So I took it, clicked it and this tiny ball of light appeared. And I knew. And sure enough, it floated towards me, the ball of light, right through my chest and straight through me. Right here. [he touches his heart] And I knew it was gonna take me where I needed to go.
[Casey looks on, stunned]

Venturi-McDonald clan and how much they pick up on the Dasey
Lizzie: is fairly perceptive. probably notices dasey once in a while but can't decide whether it's real or not. definitely has understood by vacation with derek even if derek and casey do not.
Marti: too little to care at the beginning of the show. probably thinks flirt-fighting is normal stepsibling behavior. when she's older she grows closer with lizzie and they whisper about it sometimes.
Edwin: snoopy but not very accurate in his estimations. would probably not guess unless and until his sisters filled him in, and then he'd be all over it.
Nora: blissfully unaware.
George: may have been wary when casey first moved into the house that derek would be inappropriate, but like nora, cannot read the subtext.
Abby and Dennis: who are casey and derek?
Felicia: completely aware and furious (but by the end of the movie she's one of us.)

Life With Luca thoughts/reactions
WOW, I really enjoyed that way more than I expected to!
OK, so timeline wise the math isn't really mathing for me lmao. Like how do they both have 14 yr olds and Simon being in college already?? The show only ended in 2009/2010 which was 13/14 years ago?? What year is it in this universe??? They both had children the year they went off to college lmao??
But I'm happy to ignore logic since I actually enjoyed the newbies a lot.
I liked that Luca/Skylar weren't just a repeat Casey/Derek dynamic and weren't rivals who full on hated each other but just grew up differently and had some jealousy/hostility toward the other because of that, but actually were a lot sweeter together during more serious moments. I think their personalities perfectly reflected how they were raised - Luca is a bit of a rebel, but he's very much Casey's son, he's trained in First Aid! and has a granola bar in his pocket at all times, albeit stale AF, and takes care of his siblings even if he can be lazy about it sometimes. Skylar is more mature minded but she has the freedom of Derek's parenting so she's not nearly as high strung as Casey is, but she is more organized and put together to make up for Derek's lackadaisical way of living.
I LOVED SIMON!!! He was easily my favorite new character. I can't believe I went from forgetting he even existing to absolutely adoring him. He was so lovable and silly and he must have such a wild childhood being the Venturi-McDonald baby, I would love more backstory on him!
Molly/Kai were adorable and the perfect little chaotic kiddos to round out the ensemble :3
George/Nora - although I wasn't as invested in them, their relationship is so adorable and they're just as dorky and sweet as they were in the series.
The random jewelry heist B-plot was so random, but kinda funny. I'm down for some chaotic hijinx, and I love how it ended with that theif falling through the ceiling XD
The return of Lassiter and Sam were great. It would've been great to see any of the show regulars honestly but I'm glad we got some. I think the return of D-Rock really got me. When they started singing the song I had tears in my eyes. And Ralph as a surgeon was such a great way to explain his absense lmao.
I missed Edwin/Lizzie/Marti. I think that was my only real let down with the movie. They didn't need to be in the whole thing but even a video call would have been nice :/
Career-wise I'm glad they went with Derek as a rock star and Casey as a lawyer. Even though Derek was the hockey guy, seeing him roam around as a rock star with his daughter really just fits his vibe. And I'm so glad the movie course corrected VWD Casey because I was never a fan of her dropping out of college to dance in NY like ?? sure Casey loves to dance but she loves to use her big brain even more!!! Plus fighting for justice?? THAT'S SO CASEY DASEY!!! So it was taboo then, I feel like it's even more taboo now, but had you lived it you would get it! These two always had way too much tension and never quite fell into a sibling-like relationship. They were insanely obsessed with each other making everyone around them uncomfortable, so they were destined to be messed up soulmates <3 It may be an ick for some and that's valid, but for me they'll always be "the exception the the rule" ;) Also Ashley and Mike were always pushing the limit on them, they knew what they were doing! Ok, so now that that's out of the way, I knew that we weren't going to get canon Dasey out of this, but I'm so glad the writers delivered on giving us some great Dasey content regardless. The fact that both Skylar's mom and Casey's hockey husband were both entirely absent and no love interest was given was wise. We basically got to see Derek and Casey play house and be the married vibes that they are which is honestly what us hardcore LWD/Dasey fans want anyway. Mike & Ash didn't miss a beat! That was really Casey and Derek back on my screen and it made me really emotional <3 Maybe the movie didn't have a whole lot of just them, since their children were the focal point but the way it ended, it just made me want more and feel like we were being set up for ...possible canon Dasey? But even if not canon, I think that if the show does get picked up, we can get so much fun Dasey content from it to build from anyway (canon is overrated sometimes lbr) Plus I genuinely enjoy seeing Derek and Casey in parental roles so that would be awesome. And SIMON MORE SIMON PLEASE!!!! <3

Life With Derek and Taylor Swift Songs
Songs I associate with Life With Derek, mainly Dasey, from Taylor Swift, and the stories I imagine in my head instead of properly writing them (until now, I guess) If there's any I missed that you have ideas for let me know, and yes this is long.
Tim McGraw: Casey Mcdonald and the way her blue eyes shine. Honestly, this is the type of song Casey would write. It’s cute, storytelling, and detailed. I imagine her writing this song not based on her experience but on a day when her hopeless romantic side feels sad. She imagines what she hopes to have but does not have. She wrote it when she first moved in with the Venturi’s or before Nora and George met.
Picture To Burn: There’s the obvious answer, where this could be about any of Casey’s exes. But honestly, I imagine Casey being dramatic and writing this song after Vicky kissed that boy she had a crush on. Or Vicky dating another guy Casey liked after the guy used Casey to get close to Vicky.
Tear Drops On My Guitar: Another song about Casey being dramatic. But also Derek sad boy hours. He’s glumly playing his guitar and that inspires Casey to write the song, since she doesn’t own a guitar. But don’t tell Derek she wrote a song inspired by him, and don’t tell Casey what that implies… she’ll figure it out eventually…
A Place In This World: Casey Mcdonald. I think this one doesn’t really need an explanation, to be honest.
Cold As You: Could possibly be about Dennis or Abby walking away, but I honestly can’t think of anything for this one. Maybe Casey writes something like this about Vicky after being really mean at one point.
Tied Together With A Smile: Derek Venturi. This could be seen in Casey too a little bit, but she doesn’t try to appear as perfectly fine a lot of the time. She does when it comes to school stuff, but not with her emotions. Derek is the one to put on a fake smile, make a joke and manage to hide what he feels a lot of the time. Even if he isn’t hiding it well, he still isn’t as open about it right away.
The Outside: When Casey first starts at her new school
Stay Beautiful: Cory’s eyes are like a jungle and his butt is gonna sue! I regret nothing. Could be a cute Dasey song, but I just keep remembering Corey Plunkett.
Should’ve Said No: Truman or Scott the cheating scums
Mary’s Song (Oh My My My):  Dasey or Nora and George. I personally imagine Casey finding an old journal of Felicia’s and writing this about some of the entries. Maybe it was about Felicia and her husband before the divorce or an old high school romance.
I’m Only Me When I’m With You: Smarti and Smerek. Or the entire family together
Fearless: Dasey. Enough said.
Fifteen: “In your life, you’ll do things greater than dating the boy on the football team.” This song is just so Casey coded and with everything that happened with Max I feel like Casey just really needed a song like this at the time and i see this being one of her favourite songs from Taylor.
Love Story: Dasey. I have this idea called The Shakespeare Debate it’s still a working idea, but it is Dasey. It’s basically Casey being really into plays and thinking Derek doesn’t respect them, Derek being really into film and script analysis and actually enjoying the dark tragedies of shakespeares plays. I also kind of made a whole debate scene where Derek manages to bring up Carrie while talking about Romeo and Juliet just to confuse Casey and end the conversation, but it actually makes sense and that confuses her even more.
White Horse: I just find this song so pretty and Casey being very into fairytales she would totally be into white horses
You Belong With Me: Emily whenever Derek is seeing a girl that isn’t her. Especially when he was dating Kendra
The Way I Loved You: Dasey
The Best Day: God smiles on my little brother, inside and out he’s better than I am. Makes me think of Derek and Edwin. I see Derek actually thinking very highly of Edwin and with his self esteem he probably thinks of everyone very highly compared to himself.
Change: Casey might be scared of change, but I see this song with her.
Superstar: Derek Venturi
Crazier: “Not telling her is driving me crazy.” Dasey. After the whole Scott thing and Derek  realises he likes Casey. He hates himself for writing such a sappy song, but he also likes that he managed to write a song.
Mine: So freaking Dasey coded are you kidding me!
Back To December: Derek and Kendra
Speak Now: Derek when Casey married Peter. The kids are against George and Nora getting married in the beginning. Everyone going against Fiona’s wedding because dear god that was awful
Mean: Seems like a song Casey would write
Never Grow Up: Smarti and Smerek
Enchanted: Imagine after junior prom Derek with his guitar in the white jacket. Or maybe it’s sitting nicely draped over the foot of his bed as he is sitting on the floor at the foot of his bed after leaving early once Sally’s boyfriend comes to whatever diner they ended up in. He hears Casey, Max, Sheldon and Emily pull up from his windows at the front of the house as he writes a song about how he realised he’s in love with Casey that night when he saw her coming down the stairs to the living room in a beautiful dress that he actually found, not Emily.
Better Than Revenge: Dedicated to Vicky and Truman. CD Rock totally performed this and Derek was very encouraging of the anger.
Haunted: My favourite song on the album and I mainly think about Dasey just because of the sound. The orchestra rock sound is a perfect combination for Derek and Casey.  It can be loosely inspired by Derek and Caseys anger towards Dennis and Abby after they left. It could simply be a song one of them wrote or they both wrote together, after a breakup. The fic idea i have is Derek writing this based more so on an actual haunted experience and from hearing ghost stories. Casey's classical did inspire him a little bit.
Last Kiss: I imagine this being a cute song for Sally and Derek when she moves to Vancouver. But also “I'm not one for dancing but for you I did.” Works for both Dasey and Sally and Derek. He did take her to the dance.
Long Live: Just Life With Derek as a show
Ours: Cute George and Nora song. Felicia was against them, the kids had to grow with it. It just a cute song for them too me.
Electric Touch: A CD Rock song sung by Casey and Derek. The first time Derek manages to actually sing in front of people properly without psyching himself out.
I Can See You: Dasey. But also (even though I don't ship them) I can see this as a Truman and Casey song when she's in her rebellious phase
Castles Crumbling: After Casey breaks up with Max and she quits cheerleading,  and she is trying to find herself again. Also her transition from being popular at her old boarding school and starting at a public school. The haunting feel to it makes me think of haunted and since its a duet makes me think of Derek and Casey working on this song together after her and Max breakup, which is after the episode where Casey helps him write a song for Sally. They work together on a few songs after the episode.
Timeless: The epitome of Dasey for me. Just like Mine. I see both Casey and Derek writing this song by themselves, but I really like the idea of Derek writing it though.
Safe and Sound: In Life With Luca Skylar mentioned that Derek would sing her to sleep because the dark freaked her out. I just imagine this as a lullaby he would sing to her and Marti with his guitar.
State of Grace: Dasey
Red: Casey reflecting on her relationship with Max possibly. Derek and Casey write it together and that's where we get the guitar solo
Treacherous: Dasey
I Knew You Were Trouble: Casey dedicates this to Truman
All Too Well: Someone made a really good edit to the 10 minute version for Dasey
I Almost Do: Derek almost tells Casey his feelings multiple times. Wants to call her multiple times while he's out of the country as well, and she wants to call him multiple times despite being with Peter.
Never Ever Getting Back Together: Casey and Sams on again off again relationship
Stay Stay Stay: I can picture Derek showing up in his hockey helmet after his first fight with Kendra.
Last Time: Dasey duet… possibly
Everything Has Changed: “freckles in your smile” Duet with Derek playing guitar.
The Moment I Knew: change up a few lyrics this can be used for absent parents on someone's birthday. I picture this one from Derek's perspective, though since it mentions Christmas lights and I'm Sixteen Smartplugs aired on November 5th, making him a November baby. I don't know the date production wise.
Better Man: Same as The Moment I Knew, but with Casey and Dennis. Some minor changes and the song works well with a dad who wasn't around.
A Message In A Bottle: “You got me hypnotised, by freckles and bright eyes.” this entire song I feel like Casey would dedicate to Derek. She might've been late in telling Derek her feelings before he left for Paris, but this was the best she could do.
Welcome To New York: Casey's year in New York
Blank Space: I think this works for Derek's persona he had in the beginning of the show. Casey definitely viewed him this way before finding out he's actually a really good date.
Style: Dasey. Sidenote: I also picture Derek having his bisexual moment in College with this song. Derek can have his James Dean and his feelings for Casey at the same time.
Out Of The Woods: Dasey
Shake It Off: Someone made a really good edit for Casey to this song. But also Dereks crazy legs. That's enough said.
Wildest Dreams: Dasey
This Love: Dasey
I Know Places: Dasey. Also Derek's secret boyfriend while his band takes off. I have a full story idea about that. I guess his hidden relationship with Skylar's mom works as well.
Clean: Derek eventually having to let go of Casey after she marries Peter and has Luca.
You're In Love: Dasey
Dancing With Our Hands Tied: Dasey. There's a nice edit to this song someone made as well.
Cruel Summer: “He looks up grinning like the devil!” I'd so Derek coded you can't tell me otherwise.
The Archer: Casey and her anxiety, but also Derek and his which isn't as obvious then Casey's but she can see through him when it does come up the same way he can see through her.
Miss Americana and The Heartbreak Prince: Dasey. “Ripped up my prom dress.”
The 1: Dasey
Exile: “you never gave a warning sign” “I gave so many signs.” I feel like this part in particular is very Dasey coded. But Derek is Taylor's POV and Casey is Bon Iver's. Derek gave so many signs about his feelings for Casey, but Casey took longer to noticed then took even longer to finally think about the possibility to actually give it a try, by then though Derek left for Paris. I don't believe he just up and left with no warning, he definitely had his warnings Casey was either in New York or wasn't taking them seriously. Our boy tried leaving for Spain and Vancouver he was wanting to leave for a while, once he finally had a good reason he took it and the reason was 100% Skylar's mom going to Paris while pregnant.
This Is Me Trying: both Derek and Casey can relate to this one. Lizzie can throw into the mix too, especially in Vacation With Derek.
Illicit Affairs: Dasey. Theres a really good edit to this as well.
Tis The Damn Season: Dasey
Tolerate It: Even without knowing too much about Peter, I think this works for how Casey feels about her marriage. This could also work for a lot of her relationships on the show as well. Max and Sam were simply tolerating her feelings, but that's really it.
Anti-hero: both Casey and Derek coded
You're On Your Own Kid: I see this more for Derek.
Midnight Rain: I can see this working for Dasey
Question…?: I can see this working for Dasey as well.
Paris: I think this one is pretty obvious.
Hope you enjoyed this!

There is something about Derek Venturi and Casey McDonald that just so reminds me of Peter Pan and Wendy Darling… I even see it in how Lizzie, Edwin, and Martie look up to them for guidance more than they do to Nora and George. Derek and Casey are like how Peter and Wendy are the ones that took over by playing pretend Father and Mother to the lost boys.

Forgive me for the angst, I just watched the Succession finale and it got me thinking (as most things do) about Life With Derek and the cycles of marriage and divorce.
The cycle continues, it never really ends, does it? We can presume Nora grew up with a dad who wasn't really there for her or her sisters (I don't remember ever hearing of or seeing him but could be wrong), married and had kids with a man who neglected her and the girls and then married a man who was either over involved or not involved enough in his children's lives. Dennis is her father, but with money. George is more involved, equally to Nora, but he's still very meh. (I say this as someone who likes George, he's a deeply flawed character and that's what makes him interesting.) He's not a bad father, necessarily, but still has this form of distance with his kids that isn't the healthiest.
Nora, for her own life, becomes her mother in a way: she devotes herself so wholly to a career that sometimes, things like childcare and cleaning and emotional labor fall to the wayside. (Which also doesn't make her a bad character, it makes her an interesting one.) She has Casey and Lizzie (and the Venturi's) in their own distinct boxes and when they step out of them, she falls apart. If Casey wasn't practically running the McTuri household, it would've fallen apart. When Casey's rebelling with Truman and goes through an identity crisis (which she'd been having the entire show), Nora loses her mind a little bit because that's not supposed to happen, that's not who Casey is supposed to be.
Abby, who abandons her children to see them rarely and not really form a relationship with them once she moves out, is still a huge figure in all of their lives.
Casey is forced to pick up a lot of the slack as far as things around the house go as a child because of everything. She cleans, she organizes, she cranks everything up to 12 in the hopes it'll make Dennis love her and Nora doesn't notice. Lizzie is too young and Nora is too stressed to notice. When they move in with the Venturi's, that only changes because she slowly warms up to the idea that she doesn't need to be perfect to be loved. It's a very gradual process and one we can presume doesn't last long. By Life with Luca, she's cranked everything up even higher than it was before, made herself be held to ridiculous standards in the hopes of making things look like they're fine when they're not because Peter's gone all the time and Casey has three kids she's raising all on her own and Luca's acting out and she is drowning. If she can be perfect enough, the perfect lawyer, perfect wife, perfect mom, perfect everything, then Peter will be home more and love her. It makes sense to Casey's mind. If she's perfect, she won't have to go through a divorce and do to her kids what happened to her. If she's perfect, she won't have married her father and she won't be her mother.
Derek took on a decent amount of emotional labor as a kid; did he ever do any physical labor? Haha, no. That's what Edwin's there for. But he has a very significant role in keeping his siblings emotionally healthy and stable. Marti seeks him out, not the parents, for comfort, which is telling: she's the youngest, probably a year old when the divorce happened. George might have buried himself in work or something, but whatever it is, Derek became her safe space. And he's there for Edwin, with mediocre advice most of the time, but Derek tries. Only once he's slowly taught the lesson that it's okay to show emotions and be attached does he actually start to grow as a person. But again, in Life With Luca, we don't necessarily see that. Derek hasn't dated in around 14 years, he lives alone with a whole ocean between him and the family (presumably), his best friend is his kid and he's denying emotions like he's 17 again. Derek procreated with his mother and in his efforts to not become his father, lost a lot of what made him Derek.
The irony is that the only time the cycle seems to break is when Derek and Casey are around each other. They're allowing themselves to seek comfort, even when they "hate" each other, because they're the only ones who know what they're going through so well. Time and time again, they save each other, in more ways than one. It's the consistent presence of each other that makes them realize they can look for better than what they have.
If Life With Luca becomes a show (which I hope it does), it better explore this concept. Derek and Casey can break the cycle (getting together and being normally involved parents who love each other and constantly show the kids they do) but it'd take time.

Thank you so much for talking to me about this series, its a special interest I haven't found many ppl to talk about ( specially because i hyperfocus on the siblings dynamics ;;) I'm doing some insights of my own on Edwin and was wondering if you could share stuff that indicates Derek did the raising for him? I find it entirely believable but I'm wondering if there;s supporting stuff on the canon that I'm missing >..>
Dude, you're super welcome! There's actually a whole bunch of us that still love Life with Derek, it's just a lot of the fandom are shy. That's not a character trait God gave me though, and so here we are.
I'm gonna be perfectly honest with you: my biggest evidence that Derek was very influential to Edwin's raising is that Edwin is kind of a little shit. Unlike Casey, who takes a lot of pride in giving good advice to the kids and trying to help out, Derek... Doesn't. Now, does he care about his siblings? Very much so! But with Marti, he's more concerned with keeping her safe than actually disciplining her, and as long as Edwin doesn't do anything to hurt Derek, he doesn't really care what the kid does. Even Lizzie, Derek helps as long as it helps *him*, I'm mostly thinking of the He Scoots, She Scores! episode where he teaches Lizzie hockey because he can't have someone in his family being bad at it.
(but please also note that in this episode, he is protective over Edwin getting used by the girl who is bullying Lizzie and actually negotiates with Casey in order to keep him safe)
Edwin also clearly worships his brother -- he does a lot of the same things as Derek, like pranks and blackmail and flirting with girls, or gets involved in the things Derek likes, like hockey or D-Rock. While part of this is probably because Derek is a genuinely cool dude, Edwin doesn't follow George's lead like he follows Derek's. And although there's a part of Edwin that clearly resents Derek's bossing him around, he either gets his revenge in small ways, or recognizes that Derek *trusts* Edwin to do these things for him. Edwin may be Derek's henchman, but he's Derek's most TRUSTED henchman. And that's quite a compliment when you're competing with an entire kingdom. And, like, Derek obviously has a soft spot for Edwin, in that he lets Edwin do tasks that... He probably shouldn't have him do? Is part of that because Derek is lazy? Sure. But he also has an entire high school that likes him; he could find someone else. But he trusts Edwin. That's because for a long time... They had each other.
There's also the fact that Edwin is still learning to be a person and who he is, and I think the McDonalds in his life help him stand up to Derek and explore who Edwin Venturi is. And, like, how the coolest thing about this blended family is how they all help one another grow and be better.
But yeah! Those are my thoughts on why I think Derek was a big part of Edwin being raised. There's something about Edwin's loyalty to Derek, and Derek's protectiveness over him (that he tries his best to play cool about), that gives the impression that they went through some trauma together. And while I think Derek tried to keep as much of it from Edwin as he could, Edwin is very clever and very observant, and I think he knew what was happening and the weight Derek carried. I also think he sees how people perceive Derek, especially their parents, and it may be one of the reasons he lets Derek treat him like he does; because he gets that Derek is trying to regain control in one aspect of his life when he's lost it in another (although, I think that's something Edwin would never be able to word, but also may be why? If that makes sense? Like, he does it without knowing WHY he does it).

Dasey hocus pocus au
Tumblr media
: the witches cast a type of love spell on dasey because they can tell the two teens have feelings for each other. The spell makes them act on their intense feelings for each other and not pay attention to anything else around them, so they can take away their siblings. They act flirty, hold hands, Derek even plays with Casey's hair a little bit, but still themselves. But before they can kiss thye see Zackary the cat, and are both quickly reminded of the kids. Their love for their siblings are stronger and breaks the spell.
