ancient magus' bride season 2: anime vs manga comparison
Tumblr media Tumblr media
According to the fan and the official English translations, Elias never called Chise a child in the manga (here's a good post from blue-inspiration-blog about that too).
Was the line changed to compensate for this panel that didn't fit in the anime? Or did the creators actually want Elias to call Chise a child?

(this is ch 66, wanted to find it in Japanese but it's no longer available on comicgrowl. If any of you read the chapter in Japanese or official translation to any other language, please tell us how it was translated there!)

So, I tried to translate Mahoutsukai no Yome chapter 97. The main reason was because I'm curious about Ashen Eye and Stella relationship.
It was originally from portuguese, and i used google translate, there's sentence that different from the original translation, so idk if it correct or not. Even so, enjoy!

Yamazaki: I think I've mentioned this before, but when I look at the teacher-student relationship that Lindel-san taught me, I suddenly think that Adolf and Elias are like "siblings"...hmm?

奥さん or 嫁さん?
Tumblr media
I confess - I am so obsessed with this story that I’ve even started Duolingo for Japanese. While I’ve enjoyed other anime series and Studio Ghibli for years, nothing motivated me to try to learn the language before Mahoutsukai no yome. I have some notion that if I understood the original Japanese I would be that much closer to understanding what Elias x Chise means or what Yamazaki is trying to say about marriage. Of course, that probably isn’t true - it’s probably just as ambiguous in Japanese as it is in English.

My other fandom, the Phantom of the Opera, is also a story with an ambiguous central relationship that raises questions about love and what it means to be married. The first English translation of the original French novel has some major translation issues that are both frustrating and fascinating when trying to understand whether Christine is really meant to love Erik or not. While I’m not fully fluent in French, I can read it well enough to compare the original with the various English translations and consider the details that were left out and how they change the meaning of the story. I want to be able to do this with Mahoutsukai no yome too. There are various English translations of the manga, and then there are the anime subtitles which are not the same as the English dub script. There are endless possibilities for small changes that might alter the meaning of certain scenes. I want to be able to look back at the original when I have doubts.
I’ve learned that there are numerous ways to say wife or bride in Japanese. From what I can tell, the anime most often uses some variation of yome (嫁), meaning bride. But in the very first episode, when Elias first mentions, very casually, that Chise is his future wife, he uses okusan (奥さん), which I understand can mean wife, but also housewife, or any married woman. Bride and wife are certainly related words, but even in English they carry nuanced meanings.
Do Elias and Chise use other words for “wife” that carry other meanings in the story? My Japanese is not good enough to listen for other words yet, but I’d love to hear what other readers and viewers of the series know.
As the story is called Mahoutsukai no yome (Ancient Magus Bride) Chise’s status as Elias’ bride is at the center of the story. At the end of the first arc they have what could be called a symbolic wedding. But was it a real wedding and is it a real marriage? These are the kinds of questions that are never directly answered by Yamazaki, not even in the lovely rooftop scene in which they discuss the various roles they hold in each other’s lives. Is she his okusan, his yome, or some other third thing that doesn’t have any title because it is so unique to this human and her monster husband? It’s maddening and delicious.

does Elias have siblings? :)
He does! He has two older half sibilings (brother and sister) his father had in his first marriage who are around 20 years older than him, and a little brother who's 13 years younger (same mom same dad). Very awkward and tense relationship with his older sibilings, but he and his little brother had a really strong bond (mostly his brother being glued to him and trying to copy everything he does. Wahhhh)

Reading Elias Canetti's "Die gerettete Zunge. Die Geschichte einer Jugend". The protagonist, a Sephardic Jew who went to school in England, is learning German with his mother. One day he mentions learning writing in German with those "pointy letters". I think an editor's note here would be useful. English and German both use the Latin alphabet, so why does he need to learn to write again?
Well, it's 1913 and German speakers use the Kurrentschrift, which looks like this:

PART 1 - WHEN U FUCK UP FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS ON A TV-SHOW
Hello,    Now that I've finished watching the entire Eagles series, I have HUGE problems with the script regarding the girl friendship (which could have been absolutely INSANELY awesome and iconic if handled with love).    BEFORE I say how this should have been done, I will drag the series for how they destroyed any form of STRONG female friendship.
That Amie ends up making out or (worse) sleeping with Ludde in season 1 is wildly ridiculous and makes my skin crawl. And the fact that they write Amie for the WHOLE season 2 as hunting for Felicia's ex, who was becoming a very good friend, is completely inept. Amie chases and chases and chases after Ludde (the only thing I'm going to say, where it makes sense, is that Amie has serious daddy issues).    But the fact that both Amie, Felicia and Klara have a lot of room for boys, boys, boys to come first is deeply problematic. There are no words to describe my hatred for seeing a great potential masterpiece of an iconic girl friendship completely trashed and shamed.    And Amie and Felicia are not okay until season 3x9. Felicia is of course devastated by Amie's betrayal. And Amie was not devoted in trying to get Felicia back as a friend (through season 2).    Despite the fact that I HATED that Amie didn't throw food back at Felicia in the cafeteria, I can objectively understand how angry and hurt Felicia was about what Amie did whit Ludde.
