I am doing a deep clean of my office and would like to share my archeological finds

I still have a billion of these and I converted every single one into something I could write over.

I made a lot of top ten lists as a way to cope with vet school. This list circa 1993. I have no idea what Kevinâs meetings were about anymore but âBlock IIâ was this monster course that covered embryology and everything that went with it. It was auto tutorial with few lectures. My class was a giant experiment and while it left me with a good sense of âI should figure that thing out that I donât knowâ (aka a learning issue) and the ability to research well, this particular course was a nightmare. I will say that over a six week period of time, the one recommended textbook (which was already outdated!) took me from I will never be smart enough for this in week one to throwing said book across the room in frustration as it was not detailed enough in week seven.
Anyway. âCareer day for neural crest cellsâ made me bray like a donkey so hereâs some jokes few to none will get.

Before I had a smart phone, my boss tried to force me into the Palm Pilot cult with this. I proceeded to drive him nuts by continuing to make a to do list on a post it note and sticking it to this. It was very good at holding my to do list, if not in the way nature intended.

Embryology Courses in India: Things you need to know!

Why do we need Embryology Courses in India?
The area of biology known as embryology is concerned with examining how embryos develop from the time an egg is fertilised until the foetus stage. Due to its applications in the fields of genetics, stem cell research, and assisted reproductive technologies, embryology has recently grown in importance as a subject of study. Due to the rising demand for infertility treatments and the necessity for research in this area, there is an increasing demand in India for training in embryology.
An embryologist is an embryologist, who helps use sperm and eggs to produce embryos outside the womb. Couples who have difficulty conceiving naturally may need help from an embryologist.
An undergraduate diploma in biological technology is needed for entry into the sector of embryology, that's accompanied through a postgraduate diploma, ideally in biotechnology, assisted reproductive generation, or embryology. To turn out to be a competent embryologist, one need to entire a defined curriculum for scientists that consists of 1 or 2 years of tutorial, theoretical, and realistic schooling in embryology. Of direction, revel in is a need to for skills.
How does this training help?
In India, the number of couples searching for infertility treatments has drastically multiplied in current years. As a end result, there's an increasing want for embryologists who are professional within the most recent techniques and equipment. Training in embryology can supply humans the records and skills needed to carry out infertility treatments like intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) (ICSI).
Embryology is now a crucial part of research in developmental biology, genetics, and stem cellular research, amongst different fields. Understanding embryonic improvement and its underlying standards with the useful resource of expertise in embryology can assist researchers find new healing procedures and therapies for a number of illnesses.
Clinics that concentrate on ART are essential to the system of treating infertility. To assure positive consequences, it's miles essential to guarantee the calibre of the offerings presented by those clinics. Individuals can accumulate the abilities and records had to uphold the very best ranges of high-quality and protection in ART facilities via schooling in embryology.
Students receiving stem cell training develop a thorough understanding of the methods and equipment used in the laboratory to successfully fertilize, grow and transfer embryos in ART.
Students have a wide understanding of the fundamental standards of embryology during their clinical embryology programme, which include fertilisation, early embryonic development, and implantation. Students gain from having this know-how when they perform every day duties in ART labs, together with managing oocytes, sperm, and embryos.
Students find out about the significance of quality assurance in ART throughout their schooling in embryology courses in Bangalore, such as the protection of device, lab safety, and excellent manipulate. This statistic permits students to uphold the greatest levels of satisfactory and safety within the lab, assuring the fulfillment of ART operations.

Hi! I just got into MBBS and im starting in a couple weeks. I was wondering if you could recommend me some more indian medblrs? Im having a hard time finding them :\ Also do you have some advice for lil baby med students? Im really nervous lol. thank you
Hi! First of all, congrats and welcome aboard the trying life and times of a med student! đ
Please go through my tag "blogrecs" to find lists of medblrs (both Indian and not) here! Apart from those I've already tagged, I'll list some more Indian /South Asian medblrs I came across!
@imasmallboat
@a-piece-of-existence
@sillypandagarden
@lalarevisionland
@janeshowers
@drsatan-36
@jekkylstudies
@icarus-study
(if other Indian/South Asian medblrs see this, please say hi in the replies! I'd love to get to know more of you guys too! ^_^)
As for advice, I'll break it down by subjects, that'll be more helpful, I hope?
I personally struggled with anatomy because it was a sudden and kind of a vast subject, I had trouble remembering all the nitty gritty details. I'll recommend you draw a lot of diagrams when you're reading a topic, they don't have to be super clean or pretty, just good enough for you to understand. Refer to as many atlases you want, Netters was definitely the best :') Grey's Anatomy for Students was a massive help, and I still refer to it.
I also relied heavily on YouTube channels like
AnatomyZone
Armando Hasudungan
Ninja Nerd Lectures
Khan Academy Medicine
Dr Najeebs Lectures
Geeky Medics
Medical Animations
and other tutorial channels for little topics here and there (esp embryology)
As for physio and biochem, I'll recommend you read from standard textbooks like Harpers and Guyton / Ganong, no matter what your seniors and peers tell you (because you'll see as you go on, that most of the curriculum will nudge you towards books by local authors, which are somewhat more confusing and lacking in certain core concepts, at least that's what I felt). The standard textbooks will definitely more challenging to go through the first time, but trust me, the basic concepts you'll build will pay off all through your future years! :D
Thirdly, make your own notes! And keep them nice and fresh in a big fat notebook, because you'll be referring to them all through the future years, up until final MB lol đ
I wish I'd done this part myself more stringently. My first and second year notes are now all scattered all throughout a lot of notebooks and I'm perpetually looking through a swarm of stuff just to find one topic, you get me? :') so, organisation from day 1 is the key!
Next up, you n I both know how memorisation heavy the Indian curriculum can be, and how marks oriented it all gets :')
So I'd advice you stock up on a bunch of previous years MB / semester questions of your college / University board beforehand and keep practicing! Get them from your seniors or bookstore in your college, they should be available.
Go attend your clinics/wards from day 1, don't be discouraged by seniors who might scoff at you for going forwards from early on. Be curious, ask questions, talk to your professors about things you didn't understand, and always remember to ask for help! If group study works for you, then find two or three people who you can form a study group with and study together!
Apart from these, I'll say don't be too intimidated by your professors and peers (and esp some overacheiving ones who'll constantly put your self esteem to shreds, :'D they'll be there)
But don't let them get the best of you. Remember, you're here because you're curious, you love knowing things, you want to know how the human body works, and your ultimate goal is to be a good human being and a compassionate doctor to people who come to you, vulnerable and in need of help. How you empathise with their problems and are kind to them in their times of need will speak much more about your professional ethics than how much fancy technical nitty gritties of medicine you know or how many shining achievements you have on a piece of paper :')
Wish you all the best, and hope your upcoming years in medicine is exciting and happy! đ

How to survive your first year in med school / in university studying medicine
           Or, at least, how I did and how you can as well
         * Not a native English speaker but still doing my best *
Step 1 : use a different study method for each subject â July 12th
     When I was in highschool, I already had two study methods : one for sciences (biology, chemistry, chemistry, physics) and a different one for humanities, litterature and languages.
      Coming into university to study medicine, one of my first mistakes was wanting to memorise everything (*absolutely everything*) by heart, no matter what the subject was. However, although many subjects do require this type of technique (histology, embryology, cellular biology, reproductive biology, biochemistry), that is NOT the case for all of them.
AnatomyÂ
      Anatomy is a tough subject because of the amount of material youâre expected to memorize in a short period of time. Although a substantial part of anatomy can be learnt by heart, here are a few specific points you can learn differently :
Functional anatomy
What it consists in : learning how differents muscles, for instance, work together in order to create a movement.
 How to learn it : the thing is, once you know where a muscle is, you can deduce what it does by imagining the muscle getting smaller (contracting) and vice versa.
For instance, the quadriceps is on the upper part of your thigh and linked to your patella ; therefore, when it contracts, your patella (which is linked to your tibia as well) comes closer to your stomach, and extends your leg. On the contrary, because your leg (as in your knee) is extended, your thigh (as in your hip) is flexed.
This method is very convenient because you can learn only half of the information and still know the other half. However, you canât really use it to learn very descriptive anatomy âŚ
Neuroanatomy
Same as functional anatomy : you need to understand the whole picture about how a message is conveyed in order to remember the small details of each anatomical part.
Pharmacology
What it consists in :Â studying a drugâs action on the body and how it is then eliminated by the body
How to learn it
The concepts : in pharmacology, you will come across many concepts that you will need to UNDERSTAND first (e.g. iatrogeny, pharmacokinetics, molecular pharmacology). By understanding it and processing it in a logical way, you will learn plenty of information and the basis of how things work.
The mecanisms : mindmaps come in quite handy if youâre a visual learner but you can also record your profesor (if theyâre okay with it) explaining the whole mecanism and listening to it often.
The name of the drugs and very specific details : I had a whole separate document where I wrote everything drug-related in order to find the information much faster and to remember it differently. If you have the time, flashcards and/or Quizlet would probably be great !
Physics
What it consists in :Â this one is a bit different. First, I donât know if itâs the case for every country but, where I live, we still have plenty of physics during first year. Itâs pretty much the harder version of high-school physics for us as well as new topics.
How to learn it
Donât waste too much time on learning the lesson : make a summary sheet for each chapter of the formulas and ways to solve exercises as well as important comments made by your professors. Learn it as well as you can with the method that suits you.
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Use past papers and make them once, twice, as many times as you need to no longer make mistakes. Do every set problems. They are a great break when youâre sick and tired of learning things by heart in the afternoon !
Humanities
That might not be common to all unis but I had three humanities in first year : history and psychology (1), medical law (2) as well as epidemiology (3), although the latter isnât really part of humanities âŚ
History and psychology : make summary sheets for each lesson ; although i twill take time, itâs great in the long run when revision time will come around.
Law : UNDERSTAND IT ! Itâs better knowing what the law states on a certain topic rather than knowing the name of the law article but not being able to know what it states !
Epidemiology and biostatistics : make summary sheets for each lesson and practice with past papers for examples.
Organic chemistry
That was one the hardest classes for me when it came to figuring out how to learn the content.
What it consists in :Â learning an incredible number of reactions of chemical components (e.g. what happens when you put an alcohol and a ketone together ?).
How to learn it
Make summary sheets ! It personally made mind maps where the main chemical component was in the center and where I drew with arrows the outcome of each reaction by alphabetical order (tell me if you want an example in order to understand it). Learn them well but donât spend too much time learning everything.
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. I finally understood how organic chemistry worked when I did practice problems from past papers as well as exercises provided by our professors during tutorials. This has two main benefits.
 (1) It allows you to study in an active and different way.
(2) Professors usually set the same type of problems every year but they only change the name of the molecule. By understanding both your summary sheets and these exercises, youâll be able to tackle most (if not all) of the exam.
I hope this was useful ! Feel free to leave other tips if you have some to share and ask any questions if you think about other subjects !

Editing the DNA of human embryos could protect us from future pandemics
We may edit our genes to make us extra resistance to viruses. Natali_ Mis/Shutterstock
Hollywood blockbusters comparable to X-men, Gattaca and Jurassic World have explored the intriguing idea of âgermline genome enhancingâ â a biomolecular method that may alter the DNA of sperm, eggs or embryos. When you take away a gene that causes a sure illness in an embryo, not solely will the child be freed from the illness when born â so will its descendants.
The method is, nonetheless, controversial â we willât make certain how a toddler with an altered genome will develop over a lifetime. However with the COVID-19 pandemic exhibiting simply how weak human beings are to illness, is it time to think about shifting forward with it extra rapidly?
Thereâs now good proof that the method works, with analysis usually carried out on unviable embryos that may by no means lead to a residing child. However in 2018, Chinese language scientist He Jiankui claimed that the primary gene-edited infants had certainly been born â to the common shock, criticism and intrigue of the scientific group.
This human germline genome enhancing (hGGe) was carried out utilizing the Nobel-prize successful CRISPR system, a kind of molecular scissors that may reduce and alter the genome at a exact location. Researchers and coverage makers within the fertility and embryology house agree that itâs a matter of âwhenâ and never âifâ hGGe applied sciences will turn into accessible to most of the people.
In 2016, the UK turned the primary nation on the planet to formally allow âthree-parent infantsâ utilizing a genetic method known as mitochondrial substitute remedy â changing unhealthy mitochondria (part of the cell that gives power) with wholesome ones from a donor.
COVID-19 safety
Scientists are actually discussing genome enhancing within the gentle of the COVID-19 pandemic. For instance, one may use CRISPR to disable coronaviruses by scrambling their genetic code. However we may additionally edit folksâs genes to make them extra immune to an infection â for instance by concentrating on âT cellsâ, that are central within the physiqueâs immune response. There are already CRISPR scientific trials underway that look to genome edit T cells in most cancers sufferers to enhance anti-tumour immunity (T cells attacking the tumour).
One of these gene enhancing differs to germline enhancing because it happens in non-reproductive cells, that means genetic modifications should not heritable. In the long run, nonetheless, it could be simpler to enhance T-cell responses utilizing germline enhancing.
Itâs simple to see the attract. The pandemic has uncovered the brutal actuality that almost all of nations the world over are utterly in poor health outfitted to cope with sudden shocks to their, typically, already overstretched healthcare techniques. Considerably, the healthcare impacts should not solely felt on COVID sufferers. Many most cancers sufferers, as an illustration, have struggled to entry remedies or prognosis appointments in a well timed method through the pandemic.
This additionally raises the potential of utilizing hGGe strategies to deal with critical ailments comparable to most cancers to guard healthcare techniques in opposition to future pandemics. We have already got a wealth of knowledge that means sure gene mutations, comparable to these within the BRCA2 gene in ladies, enhance the chance of most cancers improvement. These illness genetic hotspots present potential targets for hGGe remedy.

Chemistry Nobel Prize award recipients Jennifer A. Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier. J.L. Cereijido/EPA
Moreover, healthcare prices for ailments comparable to most cancers will proceed to rise as drug therapies proceed to turn into extra personalised and focused. At this level, wouldnât gene enhancing be less complicated and cheaper?
Local weather change and malaria
As we method the mezzo level of the 21st century, itâs truthful to say that COVID-19 may show to be simply the beginning of a string of worldwide well being crises that we encounter. A current report by the UN Intergovernmental Science-Coverage Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Providers (IPBES) emphasised the clear connection between world pandemics and the lack of biodiversity and local weather change. Importantly, the report delivers the grim future prediction of extra frequent pandemics, which might be deadlier and extra devastating than COVID-19.
It isnât simply extra viral pandemics that we would need to face sooner or later. As our world local weather modifications, so will the transmission charges of different ailments comparable to malaria. If malaria begins presenting itself in places with unprepared healthcare techniques, the impacts on healthcare provision might be overwhelming.
Apparently, thereâs a method to shield folks from malaria â introducing a single defective gene for the sickle cell anaemia. One copy of this defective gene offers you a degree of safety in opposition to malaria. But when two folks with a single defective gene have a child, the kid may develop sickle cell anaemia. This exhibits simply how difficult gene enhancing will be â youâll be able to edit genes to guard a inhabitants in opposition to one illness, however doubtlessly inflicting bother in different methods.
Regardless of the primary hGGe people already having been born, the truth is that the method receivedât be getting into our mainstream lives any time quickly. The UK Royal Society just lately said that heritable genome enhancing is just not able to be tried in people safely, though it has urged that if nations do approve hGGe therapy practices, it ought to give attention to particular ailments which are brought on by single particular genes, comparable to sickle cell anaemia and cystic fibrosis. However, as weâve seen, it could not make sense to edit out the previous in nations with excessive charges of malaria.
Different main challenges for researchers is unintended genetic modifications at particular websites of the genome which this might result in a number of additional issues to the genome community. The equitable entry of therapy supplies one other sticking level. How would hGGe be regulated and paid for?
The world is just not at present prepared for hGGe applied sciences and any progress on this subject is more likely to happen at a really incremental tempo. That being stated, this know-how will ultimately come to characteristic in humanity for illness prevention. The large query is solely âwhen?â. Maybe the reply is determined by the severity and frequency of future well being crises.
Yusef Paolo Rabiah doesnât work for, seek the advice of, personal shares in or obtain funding from any firm or group that may profit from this text, and has disclosed no related affiliations past their tutorial appointment.

A Week In The Life: Monday 11AM-1PM: Development
Iâve decided to do a âWeek In The Lifeâ to give a little bit of insight into what itâs like to be a biology student at Durham! (work wise I mean, Iâm not going to detail every messy Klute night...)
My week kicked off with a module that I am terrified of, but the content is getting so much more interesting. Today we started on the development of the nervous system, which was such a step up from the embryology we were doing for the last four weeks! Iâm a bit more confident with the nervous system because I answered the NS essay in my Physiology exam in first year and ended up with a First on the exam! (although Iâm unsure whether that was more down to the nervous system essay or the immune system essay lol)
I slept really poorly (not at all) last night so I struggled through the second half of this lecture, but I made it! It helped that our lecturer liked to keep us on our toes. I had tutorial work in this module too, the tutorial is coming up tomorrow.
Progress: Development Lectures - Cell Biology Lectures - Medical Microbiology Lectures - Development Tutorial - Biochemistry Lectures - Molecular Biology Lectures - Immunology Lectures

04/03/2017 Had a pretty relaxed day switching between completing my online tutorials and fun stuff (YouTube and reading). But to be entirely honest I had no idea what I was doing with drawing and labelling these embryology diagrams. Honestly still looks like purple cauliflower even after I spent a couple of hours on this.
