Fic Rec Roundup!

In honor of my going off to college (my posts will be slowing down), and finishing 3 seasons of TXF, I asked y’all what sort of “special post” you wanted me to make. You voted on a roundup of some of my favorite TXF fics, so here it is! Prepare to watch me gush profusely about the phenomenal writers in this fandom.

This will be in chronological order, so first time watchers like me need not fear spoilers:)

I’m not including my own writing here, but you can find it in my masterpost.

Without further ado, let’s get into the fics!

Season 1:

starstruck by @thursdayinspace (General Audiences, 671 words): Set post-Pilot. The title says it all. This is quite possibly the cutest thing I’ve ever read.

Something Bigger Than Us by Mungo_of_Maundery (General Audiences, 721 words): A nice coda to Deep Throat after Scully rescues Mulder from the air base. Internal monologue is great.

humans in nature by @theswisscheeserag (General Audiences, 2,733 words): Mulder and Scully’s conversations post The Jersey Devil. Philosophy mixed with fluff and some laugh-out-loud humor. Perfectly captures the vibe of early MSR.

Still Feeling My Father Ascend by @cecilysass (Teen and Up, 13,073 words): Mulder and Scully share some tender moments post Beyond the Sea. Both of them have a lot of healing to do, for different reasons. Some of my favorite MSR introspection can be found in this fic, and you can tell how much thought and care this author puts into the characterizations. There’s also several excellent funny moments - a true gem of a fic!

Egit Genius Loci by snow_and_rain (Teen and Up, 21,937 words): Case fic set right after Beyond the Sea. Featuring early-onset MSR, angst, mutual pining, and hurt/comfort. A little whimsical, a little eerie, a little sad.

Between Two Truths by @agent-troi (Teen and Up, 1,621 words): Missing scene from E.B.E after Scully’s speech to Mulder. An excellent internal monologue from Mulder’s POV followed by some top-tier MSR banter.

the progression (and regression) of first names by skuls (Teen and Up, 5,421 words): A series of vignettes exploring Scully and Mulder’s relationship as it evolves throughout Season 1. Pitch-perfect Scully characterization and several moments that really showcase her inner conflict fantastically, but also many wonderfully tender MSR scenes (keep an eye out for the coffee scene - my favorite!)

never learned to read your mind by @swinging-stars-from-satellites (General Audiences, 1,071 words): An alternate version of Season 1 where Scully leaves after Deep Throat. Profound, heartwarming, wistful and a bit sad, this takes an interesting concept and really tugs at your heartstrings.

Season 2:

distractions by @thursdayinspace (General Audiences, 1,181 words): Post-abduction. Mulder does his best to help. Absolutely heart-melting, sweet and tender and a little sad too.

The Safety of Guilt by the_status_clo (Teen and Up, 732 words): Mulder’s guilt post-abduction. Do you like to feel miserable? Do you like to slip into a pit of unwavering guilt and wallow in beautiful words? Read this!

Redial by @theswisscheeserag (Teen and Up, 7,423 words): A frequent reread of mine! Set during Mulder and Scully’s quarantine post-Firewalker and told through a series of phone calls. This fic has everything you could possibly want: introspection, angst, fluff, humor, friendship and romance all mixed into one…it’s just really good in 1000 different ways. Endlessly rereadable.

until it heals by @actual-changeling (Teen and Up, 2,351 words): A post-Irresistible fic that captures all of the poetry, panic, and drama that is Season 2 MSR. Incredibly tender with some stunning inner monologue moments. A perfect coda to my favorite episode.

Authority and Gravity by Xecotcovach (Teen and Up, 2,338 words): Another excellent fic where Scully (with Mulder’s help) tries to deal with some of her season 2 trauma. Their dynamic here is very tender and their banter is just the right amount of sassy and quippy. Set after Fresh Bones.

If You’re Sinking, I Will Jump Right Over by SammyLovesASOIAF (Teen and Up, 1,642 words): An alternate version of End Game where things go…badly-but then Mulder has to confront his emotions!An interesting alternative, angst with a happy ending. Lovely poetic language; I have some lines from this that I remember word-for-word.

Our Town by @leiascully (Teen and Up, 813 words): Scully’s thoughts during and after the climax of Our Town. Very in-character, appropriately intense, really conveys the fear and desperation intertwined with Season 2 MSR.

Season 3:

Light in Dark Places by @agent-troi (Teen and Up, 2,697 words): Set in Season 3 but it’s really about Irresistible and Scully’s insecurities in general. Peak hurt/comfort, this one makes your heart hurt in the best possible way, and then it feels like a warm hug with the resolution.

Got You(r) Back by @shearmouth (Teen and Up, 4,933 words): This is THE injury fic for me. Set post-731. The hurt/comfort levels in here are unmatched. Scully’s internal monologue is perfect. Mulder is an actual puppy and Scully takes care of him and it makes my heart melt in all of the right ways.

stay close, listen by @actual-changeling (Teen and Up, 2,667 words): Post Pusher. Very angsty, but in the best possible way and with an extremely satisfying resolution. This fic definitely wins best-written: it’s essentially poetry, and its uses of metaphor and literary references are stunning. I can’t recommend this enough.

find me defenseless by @impulsive-astrophile (Mature, 7,421 words): Case fic! Do you like Mulder torture? Do you like badass Scully? If so, you will love this fic because it has both in spades (plus-spoilers-a wonderful ending to make up for the pain). Whenever I’m fed up with the show’s kidnapping ratio, I read this: it’s probably my most frequent reread. I will say that it is more violent than anything I’ve written, so be aware.

Unconfirmed timing but spoiler-free:

unravelling by @actual-changeling (General Audiences, 2,208 words): Scully wakes up to a familiar voice theorizing on her television. What follows is as sweet and humorous as it is charged and just a little tragic.

Shakespirited by orphan_account (Teen and Up, 13,670 words): A fic that I’m pretty sure was written specifically for me. Mulder and Scully go undercover in a Shakespeare troupe plagued by strange murders. If you like TXF and are a Shakespeare nerd, you will love this. Definition of a good time (but there’s some angst too-how could there not be?) I think there are some minor spoilers in here, but nothing to really tell you anything as long as you’ve seen up to Anasazi.

Sometimes You Need to Have Fun by @baronessblixen (Teen and Up, 1,192 words): Fluff written by the queen of fluff herself! Mulder and Scully go ice skating. It’s as adorable and sappy as it sounds.

Stupid Cupid by @mulderwearingglasses (General Audiences, 5,325 words): A Valentine’s Day fic! This features jealous Scully (a delight) as well as some excellent humor and fluff. Overall just a lovely time. There may be some minor spoilers in here, but nothing that told me anything.

with the past issue slowly dying down, you and diluc decided to lay low for each other’s sake so that you two could avoid such an issue appearing again.

“wait, so i just do that? how come it looked so difficult when professor maxwell explained it?" you exclaimed, shocked at how you didn’t get the process earlier.

he won’t even deny it. he has been warming up to you ever since that talk you guys had back then. ever since he was in junior high school, all he had were the other three. so for him, it felt quite refreshing that he managed to get along with someone new on a close level.

“maybe it’s because you were feeling sleepy again during his lecture.” diluc chuckles at you.

“hey, i wasn’t! though his voice really does have this sleepy effect whenever he’s giving a lecture... he’s so soft spoken for what?” you groaned, slumping yourself over on the table.

if someone were to see you and diluc, one would most likely assume you're together as a couple, having a little study date in the library.

“you mixed these two up. first, you do this, then you do that," diluc explains, using his pencil to point out your mistakes. 

“actually, do you prefer a simpler way to solve this?”

“diluc, this is fucking calculus. of course i’d prefer an easier way," you deadpanned at him.

“alright, well, you can actually just use this formula instead," he says, writing it down for you.

you looked confused as you stared at the formula presented before you. “eh? but professor maxwell didn't teach us that.”

“that's because i derived it. look, if i use this formula,” writing down the proper solution using the derived formula that he's teaching you (however, you couldn't help but stare at his side profile instead of the one he was writing). “and there you have it. see? it's still the same result," he finishes.

“huh? wait, yeah! i think my life just became easier. what the hell?" 

“you're welcome.” he chuckles.

but who cares if they assume that you're romantically involved with each other? they can think all they want. what matters is that your only focus is the derived formula that just made your life easier.

oh! and the one who taught you that as well.

it wasn’t supposed to be like this.

but why—just why did diluc feel so... electric when your hands brush against each other? why did it actually feel nice when he felt your touch, even if it was just for a quick moment? this is stupid, diluc thinks; he just helped you pick up your pen, after all.

why did it make him happy to hear his name roll off your tongue so smoothly? it’s not like you say it in a different way than his friends. so what makes you say it so differently? what makes it special for diluc whenever he hears you say his name?

with a bit of remaining time left, you both decided to take care of some other schoolwork. but diluc couldn’t focus. no matter how hard he tries, his attention span for his own workload just ends up shifting to the girl working peacefully beside him—you.

he takes in your side profile. your index and middle fingers were pressed onto your temple, gently massaging it, a sign that diluc noted that you’re stressed about whatever you’re working on right now. your other hand lets go of the pen it was holding as you start to tap your fingers against the table—a habit you have whenever you try to brainstorm or think of something—and a trait that diluc noted down in his head (as for why he noted such a thing down, he’ll refuse to answer that).

you two are supposed to be only a tutee and a tutor to each other. neither of you should cross that line; diluc should know this by heart—after all, he’s the one who refuses to show any romantic interest towards anyone because he’s solely focused on his career. he couldn't—actually, no, he wouldn’t even dare take a tiny step into the gates that lead to your heart.

nonetheless, diluc accepts it. he accepts that maybe, just maybe, he’s crossing the line right now (or maybe he has already crossed without even realizing it).

it wasn’t supposed to be like this at all.

The existence of "Pitch" would drive me insane if I hadn't first watched it when it originally aired.

I just re-watched it and it's literally May playing the sport that Oliver and Ryan both love (Corinne should go with them and Aisha to a game), Red playing a coach named Buck (reverse meta that's still meta), and, in my opinion, Angela's most iconic fictional husband as the dead dad who made it so that his daughter would be the first woman to play in the pro-MLB league while he still could (Angela was robbed just for the righteous 732 rant alone). Not to mention Sarah Shahi (collective tissue to all of my fandoms), once again, being the one making people sort out their own problems (I'll die the day that she's on "9-1-1").

And, to those of you who say that Buck and Eddie should just be friends because healthy friendships between men is too rare, you clearly didn't watch this show (or many others that I could name) because it had plenty of examples and no two men on that show ever looked at each other the way that Buck and Eddie always do.

I will be for ever pissed that it was only 10 episodes.

Megaman Production Art Scan of the Day #732:

Ruby Spears Dr. Wily Neutronator Cel

Unlike the others, wow, this was a pretty clean and undamaged cel! Sure, there is a little bit of line loss, as you can see one of his eyelid lines has faded in half. But other than that, without zooming in to notice, this cel was preserved really nicely! No paint from another cel stuck on, or any need to add a cleaned up version. Shame it has to be a partial-body layer that was hiding behind a separate missing Neutronator cel. Well, all of it but the cap.

This Wily comes from Episode 13, The Strange Island of Dr. Wily. After the group truce, while inside the volcano, Doc figures out his Neutronator just overheated. So he pulls a Mole out of his pocket, slips it in, and the dumb contraption just simply works again. To give him back control of the Stone Bots, and to turn on Mega Man.

A Deep Breath (If Only)

I’m starting to realize, I give Hunter a lot of near death experiences, hmm.

Summary: expanding more on the fact Hunter drowned.

Here he was again.

 The world slowed down.

 Or maybe it stopped?

 Hunter couldn’t tell.

 The world didn’t feel like his for the moment, it felt detached.

 A moment of hyper-personhood, taking it all.

 It was dark.

 His vision was blurry. All he knew was it was so still, even as he moved; the water stinging as it adjusted to fit.

 Here he was again.

 For what, the third time?

  The universe just decided he couldn't get enough.

  Great for him.

 There was water in his lungs, so much water.

 It hurt. It felt like acid down his throat.

 He wanted it out

 And then, he couldn’t swim anymore. Quickly as the cold took hold of his limbs and as the water flooded his lungs.

 even when it wasn't him that was swimming.

 He couldn’t swim anymore.

 And he couldn’t breathe.

 He took big gasping breaths, his body panicking despite himself.

 He just swallowed more and more water.

 Why was he always in these situations? 

 Always unable to breathe.

 Dirt filling his lungs turned to water as he drowned instead.

 Here he was again.

 It burned.

 It felt so surreal. He could think. It seemed he had all the time in the world. Time changing; Giving a pardon. Trying to give him a moment to gather his thoughts.

  It felt so surreal.

 This time it was his decision though.

 This time he'd made the choice to throw the vial.

 This time he had time to expect what came next.

 As Belos had once again discarded Hunter’s life in favor of destruction.

 Belos, His uncle. Who wasn’t his uncle. Who never had, and never would care about him. 

 Belos, who had done so many, horrible, horrible things.

 This time, however.

 for the first time.

 Belos would have to suffer through the consequences of those horrible things.

 This time it would finally end.

 The drip would finally drop.

 The cycle would stop.

  Hunter was going to protect them.

  His friends. His family. They would be safe.

 No matter what, this would end.

 If Hunter was going to die, Belos was going with him.

 The idea felt terrifying, but it also filled him with some twisted sense of relief.

 Belos would finally stay gone.

 The others would never have to worry about him again.

  Hunter would die in the process

 It’s a shock as the thought finally hits him. But he’s not affected by it.

 Not as he can feel his skin go numb from the icy autumn water.

 Not as he felt everything ache. The sharp pain of his skin freezing, and its moisture crystallizing into the tiniest shards of ice, numbed from the water.

 It all just left him exhausted.

 The darkness slowly started protruding into his vision.

 He hadn’t imagined this was how he’d go.

 But he was going to die anyway.

 And after everything, he didn't deserve to try and find a way out of it.

 It was his duty.

 Because this was all his fault.

 If he had just noticed sooner. If he hadn’t ignored all the signs.

 None of this would have happened.

 The darkness began advancing. So quickly that he should’ve been alarmed. He wasn’t. It went and went as the cold numbed him until most of his vision was nothing but black.

 Hunter was going to die today.

 But he was going to take Belos with him.

 Everyone else would be safe.

 Belos would never hurt them again.

  Hunter would never hurt them again.

 It didn’t feel relieving anymore. Even in a twisted sort of way. As his thoughts slowed down and everything started to feel so much warmer.

 Because he had a realization.

  He didn’t want to die.

 But the thought was slow.

  Everything was slow. His brain was foggy and he felt so very disoriented.

 And finally.

 His vision went dark.

 …

  Get it out get it out get it out get it out.

 The water came out in horrible floods. His throat burned, and it hurt.

 He could feel it all rush to get out of his stomach and lungs. Racing a horrible race.

 He hacked and heaved.

  Get it out.

 Despite it all, his mouth felt dry.

 The world went fast around him.

 People talking at him. Even when he couldn't hear the words they said.

 And The self-hatred swirled dangerously in his stomach as everything suddenly clicked into understanding what happened.

  The drip finally dropped.

  There was just another right behind it

  Everything was wrong

…

And now you’re ready and well-prepared for the movie.

Happy December! Now that the feed’s live, I wanted to more formally share this: Joy to the World!

Joy to the World is a 12-episode limited series about an astronaut named Joy on the ISS who gets a little holiday magic to help connect them with people down on Earth.

It’s a show about finding out what makes the holidays so special and bringing people together across any distance.

The show’s been in the works since this time last year, and has, if I do say so myself, a pretty star studded cast of writers, actors, and sound designers all coming together to make this little piece of holiday cheer 💝

So, check out Joy to the World! The trailer and RSS feed are live now on the website and full series is airing the in the 12 days before Christmas!

Let’s talk about the insidious nature of this scene.

It’s dark and Chadok is framed in light from behind, he is purposely higher than Akk on the stairs, meaning no matter how far he walks down them, he will be in a physically higher position lest Akk move out of the way.

Okay, so at the Eclipse book talk with First and Khaotung, they’re talking about the fact that Ayan has a tattoo and how Khaotung was asked if he had any before he got the role.

He explains: I said yes. One right here and another one here that everyone sees in the series.

First points out: Everyone sees the one on the thigh.

Then motions to where’s Khao’s thigh tattoo is, Khaotung doing the same.

The significance of Ayan giving Akk the necklace isn’t as dark as I think some people are making it out to be, Dika never gave the necklace to Ayan, it was with Dika’s personal belongings that they got from the ME when identifying his body, which you see in the first episode.

Dika used the necklace as a sort of worry stone, he gripped it when he needed to ground himself, when his anxiety and stress level got too high, when his depression dragged him too low. As he explained to Ayan in a flashback, he held it when he needed to reconnect to who he truly was. Ayan started to wear the necklace after Dika died as a connection to him, he held the necklace during his panic attacks after his nightmares, because in his nightmares he saw his uncle die. It was the only thing that grounded him to his uncle, that last physical piece of him. Ayan is depressed, he’s on medication but unlike Akk, he has a support system.

Akk feels alone, is full of self-loathing, cannot connect to who he truly is and who Chadok makes him be, much like Dika. Ayan giving Akk the necklace isn’t a ‘goodbye’ or a dark hint at what’s to come for Ayan. It’s Ayan giving Akk the one thing that might be able to save him, because he can see Dika in Akk. They’re fighting similar battles, Akk is disconnected, alone, depressed, scared. He’s giving Akk something to ground him, something that lets him know that he’s bigger than his own disjointed thoughts. It’s a connection, to Ayan, to Dika. It a claim, a declaration. It tells Akk that no matter where he is, all he has to do is reach up and touch it to remember he’s not alone anymore because he’s more than just Ayan’s boyfriend, he’s family.

I love that Dean is such a romantic that he’s already clocked that Team is different for Win, that he’s not like Win’s usual hookups which is why Dean’s allowing it to happen even though as club president he really shouldn’t. Also he’s the only person that can make Win whine like a child lol, I love that for him.

I’m obsessed with Ashton “never take copper, that’s kicking someone when they’re down” Greymoore.

While I don’t know that it was necessarily intentional, I do think it’s interesting that by the end of the episode, Ashton was the only one who successfully managed to run away from the fight.

Ashton, whose family ran and left them for dead when things went south.

Ashton, who straight up told Bell’s Hells early on that he would’ve done the same.

Ashton, who looked at everyone dropping and decided to run and just keep running, who ended up doing exactly what they said they’d do.

They ran.

Quick recap of all of the big character reveals from C3E17, because we got SO MUCH in this episode and I want to remember who said what to who. BIG SPOILERS below!!

Chetney

His tattoo apparently stands for “Recognize the Alpha” (told to Imogen)

He’s only been a werewolf for a few months!! (told to Orym)

Laudna

She was one of the people killed by the Briarwoods and hung from the Sun Tree as a warning to Vox Machina - they cut her ears to look half-elven, so she was presumably the Vex or Keyleth effigy (told to Orym)

FCG

They have some sort of current of (arcane?) energy running through them that might explain their odd behaviour in C3E16, but Milo couldn’t explain much about it or how to dispel it (told to FCG by Milo, Ashton and Orym were present)

Milo also said that FCG’s joints had very old wear and tear, possibly implying that FCG is older than two years?

FCG and Imogen were able to mind-meld by both casting Detect Thoughts at the same time, but Imogen wasn’t able to learn much more than what we already know about FCG’s backstory - but it was implied that there is more that Imogen wasn’t able to access

Imogen dreamed about the scent of fresh grass after sleeping with the Shade Mother’s stone - could be nothing? Could be something?

Fearne

Her parents left the Feywild many years ago (possibly when she was in her forties?) and have been sending her postcards from many places ever since, including from Aeor most recently (told to the whole party I think?)

Her parents are named Birdie and Oleander/Ollie, and her grandmother’s name is Morrigan/Morri (also told to the whole party?)

Imogen

She feels drawn to the stone that she took from the Shade Mother, and sleeping with it changed her reoccurring dream - she wanted to run into the storm (told to Laudna and possibly the rest of the party I think?)

She acquired a feywild shard that will allow her to roll on the wild magic table once a day

Imogen was able to mind-meld with FCG but he wasn’t able to learn much more about her backstory, either

Orym

Orym had a half-elf husband named Will who died six years ago during the attack on the Air Ashari - his tattoo represents him and his husband as “big moon and little moon” (told to Chetney)

Fearne and Dorian already knew about Will (told to Chetney)

He acquired a blue chromatic rose that will protect him from lightning damage - it was a blue flower found in a storm and it reminded him of Dorian

Orym put a bunch of yellow flowers on FCG when they were in stasis (this isn’t a character reveal, it’s just really cute)

Ashton

Ashton was born flesh and blood (presumably human) but started turning into their rocky earth genasi form sometime around the age of ten to twelve (told to Fearne)

As far as he knows, his skin and organs are made of stone (told to Fearne)
