Summary: What had it been like for Eris, Under the Mountain? What games had he played—what had he endured?

Note: I cannot believe it’s been six months since I’ve written something!!! Thank you to those who shared their ideas <3

Just a little over half a day. 

Time seemed to fold in on itself Under the Mountain, stretched thin beneath the weight of dirt and stones, and Eris could not be certain. 

Had it only been a fortnight? 

He had not been there.

The day Lucien had lost his eye.

Eris bit the inside of his cheek, a habit he had inherited from his mother. The copper taste of his own blood was not enough to shake the thought. 

He had not been there, he reminded himself, as though it might make a difference. 

Perhaps if he had seen it, he would have been able to stop imagining it. 

In his nightmares, Lucien was always a child, auburn curls and sunbright smiles. 

Easy to love. 

Even Beron could not blame his mother for sobbing when they had heard what Amarantha had done to their seventh son. 

Eris frowned. 

It was dark in his cell, silent in the halls. 

Eris convinced himself he had simply imagined the scream that bounced along the stones, that such a sound could never claw its way out of a creature’s throat.  

Lucien never could hold his tongue, not like the rest of them. 

Eris had been trained from a young age to hide bitter truths behind his teeth, to use his words as effectively as any weapon. 

Lucien had always been too honest. 

Eris hated him for it.

Loved him for it. 

Just a little over half a day.

The air was damp, the smell of wet earth cutting through his racing thoughts, and Eris wondered if it was raining at home.
