Homestuck is genuinely so good. Whatever your problems are, there's a Homestuck character you can relate to. Feel like everything is pointless and you just want to destroy everything to fix it? Feel incredibly lonely and want to act happy but everything's falling apart? Feel like you're cracked and splintered and simultaneously inescapable? And that's without the complex relationships. Uneven relationships where you really like someone but all they do is hurt you (you know they like you too), unrequited crushes where you can't help but be a burden, people you've known for forever who understand you more than anybody in the world, yet you somehow grew apart (you never got over them), wanting to take care of your friends yet not knowing how... man. When it comes to being a confused teen trying to manage yourself and your relationships, Homestuck hits the nail on the head in a billion different ways.

What's this "nightlight saga"?

Ok so if you wanna see the whole thing, I have a tag called "Nightlight saga" and basically I had sent the link to the blog in the server I made for my fanadventure/askblog, pretty much asking them if they can throw me some requests and junk.

Someone sent an ask about Eridan having a nightlight, and I lightheartedly sent a screenshot like "just like me fr fr..."

Someone then sent an ask saying Kanaya was the nightlight, then someone countered with Sollux as the nightlight, and since I was liveblogging in the Discord people [specifically 3 of my friends] would send asks RESPONDING TO EACH OTHER in my inbox.

It pretty much destroyed my inbox and I had way too many asks afterwards, but it was a good time and there's some asks I do wanna draw from that cursed day

OH BOY BUCKLE UP LADS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS.

Okay I'll do the beta characters and alpha kids bc if I go into full alpha that'll be too much. (I apologise I'll keep it short)

Karkat- sweet baby boy, the reason I got into homestuck

Aradia- ghost queen, badass aesthetic, low-key creeps me out

Tavros- HE DESERVED BETTER, also a sweet baby boy

Sollux- my man fr, love his aesthetic and attitude wish they did more with his classspect

Nepeta- honestly not my favourite, find her a bit too much

Kanaya- vampire supremacy, one of the best characters ever

Terezi- MY GIRL ILY BABE, didn't deserve a damn thing that happened to her especially not gamzee

Vriska- eh I'm torn on her, she's cool? But not a type of character I enjoy

Stronk man (equius)- so fucking annoying the boner he has for the high bloods is just ugh

Gamzee- I hate him I'll say it. I'm not ashamed he is a horrible character and is so gross to terezi and karkat. Just no

Eridan- my lad he's so cool I love his weapon and dynamic with the others. I actually did my hair like him once!

Feferi- bit too air headed for me personally but I can see why so many like her. She's cool

Dave- MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER EVER IN ANYTHING I AM A DAVE STAN TILL I DIE

Rose- sweet heart but reminds me of someone too much to go beyond that

John- I find him hilarious tbh. Great protag and over all a cool dude. Best in the early acts

Jade- ugh another I don't like. I find her annoying

Roxy- gun slinging Queen. Love her aesthetic and classspect.

JADE IS MY FAVORITE I LOVE HER!!!!! I threw together a crappy little jade cosplay once I made a little tail it was so cute :3. honestly Jade is the biggest motivator I have for actually reading Homestuck cause I love her sosoososo much and I'm really interested to see how she develops!!!!!! every day I wake up and the first thing I look at is a print of her on my wall I love you jade harley

speaking of characters I like I love nepeta SO MUCH and like 80% of the reason why I haven't read more Homestuck and choose to consume fan content instead is cause I'm scared for her to die :(

jadepeta is horrifically underrated (I know they don't interact really shhhh) and probably my favorite Homestuck ship :3!!!! doggirl catgirl yuri! they can be cringe together! they parallel each other in their loneliness!!!! they can help each other know that they ARE wanted and needed and loved!!!!! what more could you want!!!!!!!!

dunno how to feel about vrisrezi? I haven't gotten to the part in the story where they're more fleshed out and stuff. they seem uh? not great for each other? which is why I'm kinda surprised I see people shipping them so much. maybe they get better idk. THEY ARE SO INTERESTING THOUGH OH MY GOD. I WANT TO PUT THEM IN AN ENCLOSURE AND STUDY THEM I NEED TO LEARN ABOUT THEM MORE

I really really really like rosemary HOWEVER lots of fan content (specifically fanfiction I have found like 2 good rosemary centric fics) doesn't explore them really I feel and this makes me kinda sad :(. they're just the lesbians and are happy and love each other and that's great but their dynamic could be so much more!!!!!!! the competition!!!! them being at different levels of being invested in the relationship!!!!! rose not opening up to kanaya!!!!!!!! the drama!!!!!!

I think the only troll I just flat out hate and don't think is interesting is equius honestly? idk hes creepy :(. and racist :(. with some of the other trolls I go okay you are definitely very very VERY flawed. but I want to see why you are this way (especially eridan). with equius he's kinda just terrible and doesn't seem all that fun to explore. my opinion could change though maybe I haven't given him a fair chance :P

i think a really big reason why I'm so attached to the beta kids is cause they remind me of me and my bestest friends tbh

I have no opinions on the alpha kids honestly. just haven't gotten to where they're introduced and haven't looked into them that much :P. I think roxy's gonna wind up being my favorite of them though she seems so silly!

I think my favorite thing about homestuck so far is how big the theme of loneliness is? especially with the beta kids (in my mind at least). like I don't think any of them mention friends besides each other and Jade literally lives on an island completely alone. I like how all the beta kids deal with this loneliness in slightly different ways too! and then troll society is so hostile that it's almost impossible to make meaningful connections. I'm just a sucker for when a group of characters are outcasts and weirdos but they find community in each other! :) gotta be one of my favorite tropes

another aspect I really like about Homestuck is how it takes things that exist in videogames only and adapts them to its world (captchalouges are the first example I think of)

i'm prefer ara/sol but i've tried getting into eri/sol but the way most of them characterize sollux annoys me lmfaoo also it kinda feels they're mostly there for eridan to me but idk i might be biased

HELPP i get that struggle fr, people who like sollux have such nuanced and personal feelings for him it's hard not to instinctively recoil when you see a depiction that fits wrong

hell yeah i'm always happy to see arsl, ive got many sketches of them that i can't finish either hrckk. i do think hussie stifled aradia's character potential a little by tying her too much to her aspect but it's hard to feel sad abt it when she's so happy

and yeah i don't care much for eridan outside of a casual appreciation for his character 😔 which is a bummer because i'm frequently drawn to love/hate dynamics so i did give ersl an honest go

like pq!eridan where he dueled sollux with added context, i thought that route was interesting. but they're just... severely lacking in the compelling debate factor of a proper love/hate rhythm. if not for eridan's entitlement over feferi i think they'd just be on neutral terms ignoring each other

i actually quite like erislkat in concept (moreso than dvslkat) but i've got so much mental barriers around ersl i still haven't warmed up to that ot3 potential completely <'3
