Romantic Reading for Valentine's Week ♥️ I decided to read a few books that had been sitting on my shelf for a long time because I'm usually not partial to the romance genre. I have Together, Apart; an anthology that caught my eye because I follow one of the authors, Erin A. Craig. Then, Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur on reference from a bookish friend; an lgbtq+ romance novel.
Together, Apart is a collection of short romantic stories set during the beginning of the pandemic. The intended audience is teenage readers. Theres a lot of themes around the shut down; loneliness, isolation, and life being suddenly shut down for the school year. There is an inclusion of lgbtq+ stories as well. This is a very innocent, sweet read.
Written in the Stars is an adult romance novel. I honestly didn't expect there to be sexual content, and I don't know why because I know it's an adult romance, but I just wasn't aware that sexy books were just laid out on front tables of the B&N. The setting was actually during winter, so this could be a seasonal read. The characters must go to Thanksgiving dinner, and they have to wear sweaters, and theres an eminent Christmas Party. It reads like you're watching a Romcom, and it's really a fun story. There is a theme of stars and astrology, or astronomy, but the facts are extremely surface level. You'd have had to be absent in elementary school to not know the moon and constellation facts. As for their astrological charts, they never actually compare their compatibility based on their signs despite there being an emphasis on dating compatibility. The writing is casual and easy to read. My only hiccup is that there are two narrators, and they interchange within the chapters. There is a separation on the page, but their names aren't the title of the chapters like in many other books. I found myself reading straight through without realizing I was in the perspective of the other girl before it was too late, and ai had to backtrack a little to get myself back on track. There are distinct differences in the two characters though, so don't be deterred that the story may be confusing. It wasn't a huge distraction.

by Erin Hahn / 3.5 stars
A story of loss, grief, and finding your way.
Case Michaels doesn’t know how to move on after the death of his best friend Walker. Luckily Walker left him a list, even if some of the things on it are a little… life threatening. Case is drowning in alcohol, bitterness and grief, and can only think about living out his best friend’s dreams. But what’s left for him afterwards?
Winnie Sutton has already given up on her dreams. With a mom who abandoned them, and a dad who avoids them, there’s no one left but her to raise her two younger siblings. She’s had no choice but to put her life on hold, and when her brother starts skipping school, she’s left with even fewer choices.
One of the items on Walker’s list is that Case befriend Winnie, the girl who works on his father’s ranch that he’s never noticed. Can the two encourage each other live their own lives, and take the chance at finding their own dreams?
Includes unlikely friendships; a sweet, no drama romance; horses, ranch, and rodeo life.
A heartening stand alone novel with lots of personal growth and learning how to move on.

Built to Last ~ Erin Hahn
Built to Last ~ Erin Hahn
Rating: 3/5 While not as good as some of her others, Hahn’s latest book reads more for the adult audience but with the ease of being accessible to her young adult readers. Shelby and Cameron work through their past relationship trauma in this lovers-to acquaintances-to lovers romance by literally working together on a new reality TV show flipping houses. I found this light and entertaining, and…

Thank you Netgalley and Publisher for this Arc!
I love friends to lovers, a one bed only trope and throw in a reality TV home remodeling show??? YES!!!
This was a hit for me. Shelby and Cam started something at age 17 when their tv/sitcom coming of age show went off the air 10 years ago and now, they are working together again!
This has a great build up to steamy romance and a lot of sweet nothings that left me sighing. What I especially loved was the attention to details about them as a couple but first and foremost as individuals.
Cam really had to make peace with his family, especially his father. He was also struggling with the idea of setting down roots somewhere more permanently than he has been. Shelby has spent the last 5 years sober and focusing on herself. My personal favorite thing about this book is that Shelby is a skilled woodworker and works with her dad on renovations.
If your a fan of romcoms then I definitely recommend this!
Out October 18, 2022!

Well-built romance from a YA juggernaut
Review: Built to Last by Erin Hahn (SMP, 18 Oct 2022)
Tumblr media
Erin Hahn's dependably excellent YA writing transitions beautifully to the adult market in Built to Last, a sweet, steamy, second-chance, childhood-friends-to-lovers romance.
Three-sentence summary: Shelby Springfield defied the odds when she left the glitz of Hollywood -- and her hot-mess, party-girl reputation -- and found her calling restoring historical homes and furniture in rural Michigan. But when Hollywood comes knocking with an opportunity to film a home-reno reality-TV pilot, Shelby can't say no -- especially when Cameron Riggs, her former co-star and first love -- signs on to the show alongside her. With the second chance they've both longed for finally at hand, Shelby and Cameron have to face down their complicated history and decide, once and for all, if their love is built to last.
This was a feel-good romance that somehow manages to be wholesome despite the adult content. Hahn's tone is lighthearted even in heavier moments, and the reality-TV setting keeps the external plot humming along. It's as compulsively readable as HGTV is watchable: it might not plumb the depths of human experience, but it'll keep you glued to the page to the very end. There's a similarly "surface-level' vibe to the emotional development between Shelby and Cameron; they love each other from the start, they know they love each other from the start, and the decisions they have to make to act on that love aren't especially soul-shattering. All the same, it's nice to see it all unfold.
I hope we see more adult romance from Erin Hahn in the future -- and that she'll dig as deep as she does in her YA books for the emotional punch she's more than capable of delivering.
Thank you to SMP for the advance copy. #SMPinfluencer

Book Review #104 of 2022--
Tumblr media
Built to Last by Erin Hahn. Rating: 3.5 stars.
Read from August 27th to September 1st.
Before I get into the bulk of my review, I want to say a quick thank you to both NetGalley and the publishers over at St. Martin’s Griffin for giving me access to this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Build to Last is an adult rom-com about two child stars who find their way out of that world. It’s been 5 years since Shelby has seen her ex-costar Cameron and in that time they’ve both built lives for themselves. Shelby doing carpentry and woodwork for her father’s business and Cameron shooting documentaries for National Geographic. But they’re brought together to shoot a pilot of a home remodel show called ‘HomeMade.’ They are forced to confront their past and to decide if they want to build a future together. Built to Last comes out on October 18th and is available for pre-order now.
There is so much to love in this romantic comedy. I found Cameron and Shelby adorable and instantly relatable. Their love and their fears all feel authentic and realistic. I also loved almost all of the side characters and could see them having love stories of their own in a companion series. There’s so much I want to know about the distillery owner and his wife or the ex-musician and her ex-boyfriend. I really hope the author gets the chance to explore these background characters’ backstories. I like the setting and also the sense of community the author built up around our main characters. I think it’s what helps make the two main characters seem so realistic, but also it feels cozy and warm. I think it’s coming out at the perfect time of the year for something that reads the way Autumn feels.
The place I struggled with this one was the Hollywood aspect of it. It felt like there was constantly a hurdle that our couple had to jump over while trying to just remodel a house and discover if this is something they want to do after the pilot is shot. Not to mention dealing with their own issues from when they were younger. I felt like Lyle was a mustache twirling villain in this story which is annoying since he seems to only be there to move the plot along. He also never seems to change despite the ending. Maybe he could have gotten some sort of redemption if he would have done something nice or apologized at the end. Anything to make him into less of a caricature of a villain.
Overall, this was such a cute romance and a quick read despite how many days it took me to read it. I had a lot of stuff going on this week so I was only able to read a chapter a day for several days. But when I finally got the chance to just sit and read, I got through this one so fast. By the last 150 pages, I never wanted to put it down.
