Ernest J. Gaines, who passes away November 5, 2019 at 86, was born in the same house in which five generations of his family had been born and lived. This house was the former slave quarters on a plantation in Louisiana, and Gaines grew up impoverished, an upbringing and environment that would become the setting and premise, and soul of much of his writing throughout his forty year writing career. He currently lives on that same plantation property, in a home he and his wife built. Although he is best known for “A Lesson Before Dying”, it is his short story collection “Bloodline” and “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” which established Gaines as a powerful voice in African American literature. 📚 #gsbauthorquotes #gsbquotesernestjgaines . . . . . . . . . . #gasstationburrito #onthisday #literaryhistory #bookstagram #books #bookworm #author #authorquotes #authormemes #writer #writerquotes #ernestgaines #ernestjgaines #alessonbeforedying #louisianaauthors #november5 #life #readingislife #booksarelife (at Louisiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4gLyNZhdEY/?igshid=4yqcrzuvsdsf

I spoke to the Old Man a couple of times, but I’m sure He didn’t hear a word I said. He had quit listening to man a million years ago. Now all He does is play chess by Himself or sit around playing solitary with old cards. ― Ernest J. Gaines, Of Love and Dust

I liken sitting down to write to extending a branch of a tree, any leaves that sprout 🍃, the work you had hoped to produce (blossoms 🌸 in the case of those who endeavor to write poetry).  Before you can write, before you can extend a branch, you must anchor your tree first, find your roots, locate a sturdy trunk. This is the collection of books that I have read and re-read, many times over, each for its own reason. They anchor my tree, form the base of any branch I have tried to extend: Americanah #chimamandangoziadichie Rattlebone #maxineclair Native Son #richardwright A Lesson Before Dying #ernestjgaines The Farming of Bones #edwidgedanticat A House for Mr. Biswas #vsnaipaul Sugar Street #naguibmahfouz Sent for You Yesterday #johnedgarwideman The In-Between World of Vikram Lall #mgvassanji A Gathering of Waters #bernicemcfadden I Know This Much is True #wallylamb ___________________________________________ #prose #literary #fiction #bookshelfie #booktube #booktastic #booklove #bookstagram #avidreader #bibliophile #goodreads #booknerdigans #readsoullit #igwriters #writersofig #writersofinstagram 📚 https://www.instagram.com/p/BzDx9GvgVgd/?igshid=1s6mo1djnbysv

The Tragedy of Brady Sims is going down on this rainy Sunday ☔ 📚. Despite the setting in slow paced mid-twentieth century Bayonne, Louisiana, Gaines's works are action packed. Brady Sims is no different. It starts with a bang from the very first page. Most notable is the detail Gaines folds into a scene, from the man continually working to butt his way into a conversation he knows nothing about to the character who became known as Bo-Boy on account of his grampa's stutter. I'm not much of a book critic. I've found my work often enough at the business end of that sharp poke 😣 to do that to another writer. My only wish is that this was a looonger novella. We could all use more #ernestjgaines #storytelling in our worlds. ___________________________________________ #prose #LitFiction #literary #fiction #booktube #booktastic #booklove #bookstagram #avidreader #bibliophile #goodreads #booknerdigans #readsoullit #igwriters #writersofig #writersofinstagram 📚 (at East MLK, Austin, Texas)

Let me pass, Marcus, Pauline was saying. I’m telling you, now. What he got on you? Marcus said. What’s the matter with you, woman? I’m telling you, let me pass, Pauline said. What’s the matter with you? he said. I been working up there all night like a slave, like a dog—and all on ’count of him. What’s the matter with you? I’m telling you, she said. Let me pass. He moved closer. Don’t you put your hands on me, she said. I mean it, don’t you put your hands on me, you killer. He hit her and knocked her down. She got up. If I tell him, he’ll kill you for this. He’ll kill you. You white man bitch, he said. He hit her again. She fell again. Leave that woman ’lone, boy, Pa Bully hollered at him. Mr. Grant, Aunt Ca’line said, warningly. You hear me out there, boy? Pa Bully called. Pauline was up again. You bitch, Marcus said to her. You bloody whore. She was running toward the gate now. You whore, he called to her. She was running in the yard now. She ran in the house and locked the door. He stood there a while looking at the house; then he went on. ― Ernest J. Gaines, Of Love and Dust
