Coffee & Spirits: Why Does It Work?

Coffee. The choice beverage for a compelling start to one's day and an overall pleasant morning experience. It is a drink that can be achieved in many ways quite simply, and yet it maintains a sort of pompous state of pride in the effort of doing quite the opposite. With coffee, especially espresso, dedicated baristas put an incredible emphasis on the experience as opposed to just the beverage itself. To no surprise, and on the other side of the spectrum, experienced bartenders often feel very much the same way in the world of cocktails.

It's such an unlikely combination, sure, but is it really? Although it would seem faddish in nature, the fusion of coffee and liquor is nothing recent by any means, with some instances of the iconic combination being traced back to 9th-century African tribes fermenting regional coffee berries to make a sort of caffeinated wine.

Over centuries of practice and cultural blending and migration, this wine, which was described as more of a pulp, most likely met the hands of European distillers, who would go on to refine the wine into a smoother and more marketable product. Some modern examples of this would be spirits such as Kahlua or Patrón XO Cafe, which feature a combination of coffee and rum or tequila, respectively.

Beyond that, the usage of coffee in cocktail making is widely popular in today's bartending scene, with some of the most iconic cocktails including it as a feature in the recipe. The two most blatant are the espresso martini and the Irish Coffee.

We've explored its origins, as well as where it is today, but the question is, why does it work?

The simple answer? Marketing.

Coffee drinkers and spirit enjoyers are both incredibly loyal to their respective communities and are oftentimes willing to sample new takes on the drinks they already enjoy, which makes the fusion of them quite perfect. The unique character, as well as the emphasis on the experience, are both quite signature to these communities, and it makes them blend quite effortlessly. After all, who says you shouldn't be allowed a selfish impulse once in a while, with an opportunity to indulge in both?

This craft is, of course, one made to be worthy of royals.

I don't drink with any sort of regularity but I do sometimes. One of my favorites is to mix The Grind espresso rum with regular dark roast coffee and either a small splash of milk or creamer. I jokingly say it's like a pretentious four-loko because of the caffeine+alcohol

pile 1: you're a bold, bittersweet drink my friend. you have depth and darkness, yet you are also insanely charismatic when you want to be. definitely a negroni sbagliato (with prosecco in it <3), coffee, dark black tea, campari, rum, chinotto. a bittersweet mystery made for the road, not for home.

pile 2: you're a complex and unpredictable drink, one may never know how you'll turn out to be, even the most experienced of bartenders. definitely a very cold drink with a sharp finish. always five steps ahead. espresso martini, vodka, bloody mary, kahlua, ippodo matcha, cognac. a walking contradiction.

pile 3: timeless indulgence is your name, you're elegant, sophisticated but with an undeniable softness. champagne, cappuccino, one of those fancy fancy weird coffee drinks (think lavanda oatmilk, gold coffee etc), red wine (specifically the one that cersei from game of thrones loves to drink from her evil goblet), moet & chandon, milk tea, san pellegrino water with a twist of LIME (not lemon), cardamom chai, grape soju.

Day 2 of 'Dragon Age: Veilguard' cocktails

Neve’s Winter from Tevinter

recipe and tasting notes under the cut

in a chilled open coupe

2 oz irish cream (i used 5 farms) 1 oz coffee liqueur ( i used kahlua) 1/2 oz iced espresso 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream (like kiwi sized scoops) a fist full of ice cubes

put everything in a blender to just barely smooth, you want some little ice chips

pour in your glass and garnish with a snake of caramel and a few coffee beens

I chewed on my ideas for a while and there is a bit of dialog from harding about iced coffee she saw in tevinter which is described as basically a real dunkin donut’s frozen nightmare and since Neve's diet is already all fast food and bad coffee why WOULDN’T she treat herself to a little chain restaurant mudslide style treat. I dropped the vodka to lower the abv and make space for grocery store cold espresso to up the caffeine which felt right. She’s having fun but she’s ALERT. The caramel sauce is mentioned by harding but also it was fun to draw a little ribbon reminiscent of her ruffles and snakes.

The beans do add a wonderful nose to each sip as a garnish you can crunch em if you a real coffee freak. This is delicious and very easy to drink. it’s really nice in a coupe instead of a big applebee’s punch bowl because by the time you start going ‘eh this is too much’ you are done, drink’s finished. I stand by keeping the ice a lil chunky because it slows you down and gives a fun texture. I’m not going to stop you from ordering a drive-thru fried fish sandwich to enjoy with.

🔹Espresso, youngest child of House Brew (son to Mulled Juice and Blond Roast (OC), brother to Latte and Kahlua (OC)), a family of magical and scientific prodigies.

▫️Founder of his own Coffee Magic and Research Academy.

▫️Always boasting about his family's latest patent or discovery. Loves to support and help his siblings with their projects and enjoys their company with his.

▫️Like in canon, he is generally polite but can be rather blunt at times, especially when in a hurry. Genuinely wants to help cookies with his inventions, but can be oblivious to the struggles of the lower class.

▫️Borderline refuses to walk, instead opting to levitate everywhere. Why should he dirty his shoes when he doesn't have to?

🔹Madeleine, a freelance writer and aspiring journalist, lives in the lower city; nighttime street fighter for extra cash to help take care of his sick mother

▫️Deeply driven by the pursuit of justice and exposure of corruption. Never really rests (trying to get that "Big Break", ya know?).

▫️Toying with the idea of some ~ vigilante justice. Don't know if I really feel like turning him into Superman though.

▫️Loves literature as a hobby as well as a career. Has a few published works, but the royalties suck. Occasionally teaches a writing workshop. ( Very pretentious when it comes to writing, but what writer isn't?)

🔹 Madeleine did an interview and article with Espresso one (1) time and now the mage can't leave him alone.

🔸"Being my personal scribe is a very prestigious position. Are you sure you aren't interested?" "HOW DID YOU GET IN MY HOUSE???"

▫️In all seriousness, Espresso is an actual fan of Madeleine's writing and has purchased...an alarming amount of his works, including discarded pieces and first drafts.

▫️Likewise, the only coffee Madeleine drinks is Espresso's specialty blend. It's almost an addiction.

▫️"Couldn't Care Less" parallel in which Espresso is venturing around the lower city looking for Madeleine and nearly gets mugged. Ofc his beloved swoops in with his experience as a fighter and saves him (he is now madly in love).

▫️Maybe an actual plotline where they work together to uncover corruption in the Convocation (bonus angst: Espresso's turmoil over having to investigate his own father; meanwhile, Madeleine's mother's health is getting worse)
