Tri-state trilogy of terror is crazy if you over analyze it. Because—ok. You have this guy running a book-mobile and telling stories to people. His stories come from a book entitled Tri-state trilogy of terror and star the Phineas and Ferb characters which is already quite bizarre. Who is this guy? Where did he get these stories? Is he part of the PNF universe, did he write like…real person fanfiction about the kids?!! Or is he meant to exist outside of canon? Are Phineas and Ferb and Co. just book characters in his reality or something? Or does the show exist in his universe and he’s a fanfiction writer/horror fanatic? Why do the characters WITHIN the stories also have the book?? And what are the implications of Phineas technically telling the story of the Evil Platypus Clones? If Phineas told the story within the story, and he doesn’t know Perry is a secret agent, does that mean within the realm of the Evil Platypus Story he is NOT in fact a secret agent? Or is he because the story is still technically being told by the guy with the book?!! WHY IS ALEX HIRSCH A JUICE BOX

I truly think that the main reason Percy is such a compelling character is that Rick was a teacher. Have you ever worked with teenagers? They're a mess, angry at the world and the system and themselves. Neurodivergent teenagers often even more so.

I think, in lots of kids and ya fiction, even when the heroes are allowed to be angry, or scared, or hurt, it feels like they're reacting the way an adult would. There's an element of duty, of resignation mixed in there. An air of this is how the world works. Even if i don't like it, this is what has to be done.

We don't get that from Percy. He is introduced to the world of gods and monsters, to camp, literally sobbing and screaming. He is pushed into a situation he Does Not want to be in by adults telling him this is your duty. This is what must be done. And he is angry. He pushes back, finds loopholes, screams louder when no one will listen. He maintains the attitude of This Isn't Fair, even once he has accepted that he is the child of the prophecy. Throughout the series, he runs from his 'duty', sulks about the state of his life, breaks the rules to protect the people he doesn't trust the system to protect. He asks Why? and the people upholding the rules hate it, view it as disobedience, 'impertinence'. Even his fatal flaw boils down to choosing his loved ones over authority. When granted one request from the gods, he tells them to Make Things Fair.

He reacts the way a teenager would. Sure, a teenager forced to grow up too fast, a teenager in a situation no real teenager has ever been in. But Percy Jackson acts like a teenager, thinks like a teenager. And i don't think he would have been such a good character if Rick hadn't known how a teenager would act from being a teacher.
