thinking about how cecil has a Huge presence in night vale as the Voice of it all but to abby he is her gay little brother. cecil being perceived from many different viewpoints--from carlos' perspective to abby's to a third person pov in the books--is something i love so much. i love how his character has become so much more real over the years :(

Since Cecil is... a little occupied right now, I guess I'll be listing off both our costumes.

We're actually doing a couples costume - an egg with a halo (me) and an apple with devil horns (Cecil). We are a "good egg" and a "bad apple".

short fic about being a neurodivergent parent to a neurodivergent child

"Esteban, did you finish your veggies?”

“Nuh-uh.” 

Carlos set down the dish he was washing and crouched down to take the plate Esteban held up to him. It was one of those evenings where Cecil had to work late at the radio station, so it was just the two of them for dinner. Esteban had looked at Carlos with those huge brown puppy dog eyes and demanded “chicken nuggies”. He liked the ones in weird shapes: dinosaurs, trains, anatomically correct human organs. And Carlos thought he liked carrots and peas to go with them. Apparently that was an incorrect hypothesis. “But the plate is empty,” he said. “What happened to your veggies?” 

Esteban shifted from foot to foot. “They were yucky,” he said finally. Aubergine skittered over and tried to lick the empty plate, making Esteban’s petulant expression crack into a smile. Carlos set the plate into the sink and took Esteban’s hands. 

“Can you tell me why you didn’t like them? Daddy made you carrots last week, and you said they were good.” Esteban’s eyes scrunched up like he was going to cry.

“Cause they felt weird in my mouth. I like the carrots when they’re crunchy, but?” 

“But you don’t like them when they’re soft?”

“Nuh-uh. I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to be sorry.” Carlos quickly wiped the tears from Esteban’s eyes and hugged him. “Hey. Ban Ban. It’s okay! It’s okay not to like food.” 

“My teacher says I have to clean my plate at lunchtime before I can go play.”

Your teacher is going to end up publicly shamed on the radio station once Cecil hears about this, Carlos thought. But what he said was, “Sometimes grown ups make up silly rules, because they think they’re smarter than children. But that doesn’t mean they’re always right.”

“Grown ups are dumb!” Esteban giggled. “Like Susan Willman.”

“...sure. But listen. You never have to eat something if you don’t want to. Veggies are good for you, but feeling comfortable is better for you. I just wish you had told me before I made the food for you, so I could have made you something else you did like.” He clarified himself quickly, sensing that Esteban was confused. “I’m not mad. I promise. I want you to be happy. That’s all.” 

“Pinky promise?”

“Pinky promise.” Carlos ruffled Esteban’s hair. “What did you do with your carrots?”

“I gave them to Faceless. She likes them.”

“That was nice of you. Are you still hungry?”

Esteban tilted his head to one side and thought about it. “No,” he said. “I had lots of peas and chicken nuggies and I ate all of the monster truck ones, so those are REALLY big. I think I’m full.”

“Okay. Would you like to watch your show?”

“I want a cookie.”

Carlos smiled. “Didn’t you just say you were full?” But Esteban didn’t need to use his big puppydog eyes; he’d already taken the cookie jar down from the shelf.
