Know your Destiel/Cockles history: a calendar 

As a newcomer on Tumblr and on the Supernatural fandom, I first had trouble following all the past events that were regularly reminded and celebrated.

Scrolling through another fandom's tag a while back, I encountered a few anon asks warning people of the perils of bringing up RPF/shipping to the individuals who inspire it. While I agree with the sentiment, this person didn't choose a good example to go with it: Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins.

The gist of it was that this issue caused them to stop talking and even to refuse to do events together for a long time.

Which is blatantly untrue, for one:

What "The Dragon Prince" Means to Me

There's been a lot going on in my life recently, and I haven't had much time or energy to contribute to s7 hype, but on the eve of our final season, I do want to reflect on what The Dragon Prince means to me. (Cue long-winded personal essay no one cares about LOL).

Growing up, my parents always made me feel weird and ashamed about my interests, telling me the shows I watched were "dumb" or that I was "too old to watch that." When I was 14, I literally watched ATLA for the first time on our family computer on some random website when no one was home, and I would delete the browsing history so my family wouldn't see it and judge me (....some 14-year-olds were deleting porn history and I was out there deleting cartoon watching history LMAO).

Anyway, I decided at some point that no one could know what my interests were or that I watched cartoons/anime. I went to college and was absolutely terrified of not fitting in and being deemed "weird" by my roommate (she thought I was weird regardless lol). I actually had this belief that if I ever got married, I wouldn't even tell my spouse about watching cartoons or anime. Then, I met my college friends, who were into more niche stuff too, and my (now husband) who was really into Dragon Ball (which I learned after we'd been dating for a few weeks). I reluctantly opened up to him about the things I was interested in, and he thought it was all really cool and wanted to watch them with me (and enjoyed watching them with me!).

We've been together since 2015 and have been living together since 2017, so on September 14, 2018, when I was browsing Netflix and "The Dragon Prince" was recommended to me, I watched the trailer and was immediately hooked. And I called him into the living room and showed him the trailer and was like "wanna watch this with me?" And he was like "heck yeah!" And we've watched every season together since.

I think in a lot of ways, this was the first show where I've felt comfortable talking with others about my interest in it, largely thanks to personal growth and just finding my people. I've loved every bit of the show, supplementary material, memes, etc. that I've seen over the past six years, and this has been, hands down, the best fandom experience I've ever had. Apart from getting to enjoy the show with people I love, I've met so many amazing folks on tumblr whom I admire and really enjoy chatting with.

Some personal highlights for me over the years:

Six years is a long time, and, while I was an adult when the show started, I've definitely grown up in this time period in a lot of ways, having experienced a lot of major life events:

I got engaged

I got married

I got promoted at work

We bought a house

We've adopted two dogs and a cat (one of my dogs is named Stella after tdp)

We've encountered some major losses and hardships, which have made us stronger individually and together

And, this June, we're expecting our first child (provided everything keeps going well!)

So to me, my Dragon Prince era has been about personal growth and learning to accept and love who I am. It's been about leaning into my interests and passions and learning new things (like making gifs!). Life is seriously too short to give a flying fuck what anyone else thinks. Be unapologetically you! <3

Makes me wonder why his team and essentially him didn't capitalize on his popularity when he was in his prime popularity era. I think about all the popular actors right now and see them everywhere getting casted for multiple movies or series, getting partnerships with brands, making connections with the right people. It should have been so easy for him in his prime, being a white good looking actor at the time but nothing. Outside of Gucci which to me happened a little before he became really popular he didn't have anything significant outside of his acting job and even then his movies outside Marvel were not hyped up. I look at Austin Butler who prior to Elvis wasn't that popular and didn't have many noteworthy roles but after Elvis his name skyrocketed, his value increased, he's getting more options in jobs, getting sidegigs, and seems like he made some huge connections with important people. It really is something to think about.

I think they did take advantage of it as much as they could due to limitations on his time caused by his Marvel contract. Remember it was not just filming, but also press commitments, which also stretch throughout a year to events like D23 and SDCC appearances. But there were brand deals during that time, like Fila. I think you also have to factor in his own personal wish of seeming to like a bit of down time between his projects, or his want to balance smaller roles with larger roles. But, really, I think he used the time during the height of the Marvel contract to do what he really wanted to do - get to direct a film, and do a play on Broadway. I think those were his main goals, and he got them. Plus, starting in 2017, he was devoting a lot of his extra time to ASP.

She’ll be busy, preparing for her directorial debut and, like the rest of the cast, getting ready for Season 8. Assuming Starz promotes the elusive Season 7B, we’ll see her in what are probably long-ago recorded videos, etc. Some fans are wondering if Starz will host another mid-season premiere event like they did for Season 1B in 2015.

I’m looking forward to seeing her promote The Amateur (8 November) and The Cut (TBA), and hope the films are represented next awards season. As much that circus irritates me, I enjoy seeing her and Tony out and about. 👠👞

Hey guys.

I know that there’s all kinds of fun events coming up, screenings and signings and conventions and whatnot.  They will involve large numbers of people in the same space.  I accept this.  It is happening.

Please wear a properly-fitted N95-or-better mask if you’re going.

Please mask up if you’re going, because covid is still out there, and I cannot risk bringing it into my house.

Please mask up if you’re going, because I can’t go.  I have to very, very sharply limit my time in public, because every time I go out I am risking covid, and I cannot bring covid into my 100% high-risk household.  That means I have to ask myself what I’m willing to potentially hospitalize my companion of 20 years for, or what I’m willing to potentially hospitalize myself for.  And as long as covid is circulating freely, I can never stop asking that question.

I can’t join my fellow fans at the Good Omens early screening, or at SDCC, or anywhere, because almost nobody is masking.  Almost nobody is being covid-conscious.  Could you, just for these few events?  Please?  The more individual humans that do it, the more other people will see them doing it and perhaps follow suit.  The more that people in general are willing to wear masks, the less likely I am to catch covid with every trip outside.  I might be able to go to a con again, some day.  I might be able to go watch that total solar eclipse coming up next year, the one we were already making plans for back in 2017 (I’m guessing we’ll just have to wait for the next one that swings by anywhere near to us, which will be in... let me check Wikipedia... 2044).  I might be able to just... go out in public without it being a huge stressor or requiring tons of preparation, swing by a coffee shop just because I feel like it, maybe even have offline friends again.  Have a professional cut my hair in a way that gives me good gender feels again.  (Do you know, I’ve been ready to talk to my doctor about testosterone for almost two years now?  But gender dysphoria won’t put me or my housemate in the emergency room.  Vastly increasing the frequency of my visits literally to a place where sick people congregate might.)

I understand that the pandemic has been declared to be over, and that long covid is obviously only something that happens to someone else, and it’s okay, as long as you’re young and/or basically healthy it’s fine!! :) :) :) :)

I’m one of the weirdo sickies.  As long as you’re having your fun togetherness times unmasked, I get no fun togetherness times at all.

If you’ve ever gotten even a tiny bit of joy from a story I’ve written, could you please just wear a properly-fitted N95-or-better mask when at one of these public events?  As a personal favor to me?  Because, yes, I know a handful of people wearing masks a thousand miles away doesn’t make an objectively measurable difference to me.  Except it would make such an incredibly huge difference.  To me.  If for just one single day this summer, someone would put up with some inconvenience, just to show the world that they do still care about people like me.

(This post is me, as one person of a particular fan community, reaching out in an attempt to reach others in that community who are aware of my specific existence as a human being, and who could potentially want to do me a favor.  If this breaks containment then no, random person who doesn’t know who I am and doesn’t care, I am not asking a single thing of you, other than that you accept that perhaps this interwebs posting is not for you.  Because it’s not.)
