I read a lot of good books this year. Like many of us, books were a much-needed respite from all the things going on in the world. (disclaimer: I have spent nearly three months languishing and sullen with post-COVID symptoms and have read, over dec-feb, eighty-one books. this is a ruthlessly streamlined list of recs that does not include, uh, all the rereading of sarah maclean and charlie adhara and georgette heyer books.)

AT FIRST SPITE by olivia dade - what if I moved in next to the man who ruined my engagement to his younger brother, and tried to ruin his life by playing monsterfucking audiobooks really loudly?? a heartfelt and lovely romance that also expertly sets up a great small-town setting for an ongoing series.

THE REFORMATORY by tananarive due - historical horror based on the existence of a real school for boys, clear-eyed and brutal in showing the the effect of racist systems in the 1950s american south. compelling as hell. even if you're not usually into horror, I'd recommend this: the ghost aspect is light-handed and really not as important as the horror of what humans do to other humans.

SOMETHING WILD & WONDERFUL by anita kelly - this is a m/m romance about walking the pacific crest trail which made me see the appeal of very long walks. a miracle! it's gentle and emotional and well put together; the characters really grabbed me.

THE BELL IN THE FOG by lev a.c. rosen - the followup to 'lavender house', and somehow even better?? a historical mystery series featuring a queer private eye in 1950s san francisco who looks into crimes against other queer people. amazing queer history! ACAB! I hope there are fifty more books in this series.

FEAST WHILE YOU CAN* by mikaella clements & onjuli datta - beautiful, greedy, terrifying small-town horror that is also a fucking fantastic, gorgeously written sapphic love story. this one IS for the horror fans. it gave me the absolute creeps but I couldn't put it down.

LADY EVE'S LAST CON* by rebecca fraimow - I described this on bsky as 'if you like Leverage, space opera, old screwball comedies, and dashing sapphics who are at all times spiritually wearing a leather jacket: this one is for you' and I stand by that. huge amounts of fun.

LONG LIVE EVIL* by sarah rees brennan - I will be screaming from here until forever about SRB's first adult fantasy book. if you like the isekai'd-into-a-villain-character setup and want it to be hilarious, genre-savvy and wildly angry and clever, you will roll around in this like a blood-stained mud puddle and then beg for more.

THE LAST HOUR BETWEEN WORLDS* by melissa caruso - really clever and original fantasy about a woman on maternity leave who gets dragged into saving a cocktail party which is falling through increasingly murderous and bizarre dimensions. LISTEN, JUST GO WITH IT. it's a seriously cool adventure.

YOU SHOULD BE SO LUCKY* by cat sebastian - yes, it's another m/m romance about queer history in the mid 20th century, this one between a baseball player and the journalist assigned to write a story about his slump. made me care about baseball. cat is a genius.

Prism Pines AU

After Ford comes back, does he have issues being a parental figure? Not just himself acting as a parent, but the kids actually recognizing as an authority figure in their lives.

Because sure Stan is their uncle, and he let then know that Ford is their father, but Stan was the one who raised them. He's been their parental figure their entire lives up to that point. And if Ford still threatens to kick Stan out, that might just sour the relationship they could have with Ford harder.

And what about Stan himself? If Ford would tried to pull a "As their father I think they should do this or that." But would Stan accept that, or tell Ford he barely even knows Dipper and Mabel, and can't overrule him when it comes to them?

Oh it's super awkward and there are a lot of issues they all have to work through Ford didn't know he had kids, he'd forgotten about the eggs and the whole karaoke night (And probably a good thing because Ford doesn't want to think about what he would have done had he found them when in paranoia mode)

He has zero idea how to handle kids, much less kids who have Bill's powers, who are a reminder of that relationship and know all about him and have been waiting for him and he is in way over his head.

Luckily he doesn't try and kick Stan out because the kids live here they're not leaving.

He doesn't really try to be authority figure at first or jump into parenting he doesn't outright avoid them but, he is avoiding them. The twins now knowing about Bill being other dad and the relationship between them stop using other form/powers because they don't want to upset Ford.

Stan has to be responsible twin and basically has to go down and drag Ford out of his self imposed paranoia/planning to destroy evil Ex corner in basement and get him to spend time with his kids. He's stepped up and been the kids parental figure for a long time and he's made them talk out argument and is like 'Well great now I gotta parent myself and Ford...oh well can't do worse than our dad did' and basically makes them talk things out almost right away.

It doesn't go well but when you live with 2 half demon/euclidean twins... well they kinda get put in different dimensional area and have to talk it out.

So Stan and Ford get things sorted out. Ford still doesn't overrule or jump in he's freaking out he doesn't know how to parent. and Stan is basically having to encourage him and make sure he bonds with both of them letting them know all about the kids, and that the kids know about him and have been excited to meet him all of them have wanted him back.

It takes a while for Ford to bond with them, and let them know he loves all sides of them and even helps with how to use their powers doing experiments and stuff to help them and see what they can do.

When Ford dos finally go full on dad mode he gets very excited 'STANLEY DID YOU SEE THAT I DADED'

02.       BACKGROUND,

born in boston to an upper - middle class family, wynne spent her early years on the east coast in a suburban town that felt too small to host her big dreams. when her parents broke the news of their divorce & her mother's intended relocation to amsterdam, she all but jumped at the opportunity. after having spent her teenage years in the new city, her heart yearned for more and sent her packing back to the united states, where she would enrol in a nursing program in atlanta. setting overseas on her lonesome, her college tuition fund never was deposited to the educational institution. one overnight voyageur bus later, she finds herself in miami - dade county, trading in a chunk of her tuition for a honda that would become her home for the next few months. it's 2005 and she's spent the greater majority of the year reinventing herself and making a home of whatever miami has to offer. she tries waitressing at several establishments & ultimately lands a job at coyote casino, where the tips are the greatest & the easiest to land. driving home one night, she manages to catch the eyes of the nariza bois due to her recklessly calculated driving. she recalls the night as a happy accident, blind to what was awaiting her. what she didn’t expect is to fall in love with the racing scene or the adrenaline it provides.

03.       HEADCANONS,

i didn't want to make things too long in the backstory so i'm sorry if it seemed dry but i'm gonna tl;dr some facts about wynne !! 😭😭

one important thing to know about wynne is that she can be a bit of a pathological liar but she’s #lowkey about it 😔 and when i say that, i mean she lies about small things without realizing it. she often ends up in drama because of this trait & gets caught simply by telling people different versions of stories. she tends to exaggerate her life (she prefers to call it romanticizing her life) because she wants to seem interesting to those around her </3 but don’t get it twisted, she isn’t evil or anything !! she just wants to feel seen </33

the lying habit also stems from her lack of sense of self. she's been trying to reinvent herself since she was young as being an only child from divorce and her upbringing being drastically different with both parents vs with her mom alone has given her a bit of an identity crisis !

with that said, she is fiercely loyal and fiercely naive. it isn't very difficult to get her to do whatever you want so long as she's convinced you have her best interest in mind. do with that what you will </333

she's a part - time waitress at coyote casino and wants to move up in her position but actively steers clear of the gambling scene because of her addictive personality. she has too many vices already 😔

essentially blacks out mentally when she's driving. her surroundings disappear when she's behind the wheel which is probably super dangerous but she thinks it's part of the #thrill

the nariza member who recruited her !! probably saw her as a lost deer but was intrigued by the way she drove that honda like she owns the road. the relationship between them is up for interpretation but i think clover would owe them her life so she would trust & do anything this person says

a roommate and bonus points if they're frenemies or rivals or simply disagree and bicker over everything like who finished the last of the milk or left the dishes in the sink. this person is probably the only one who sees the genuine side of her since they yknow.. live together

a proper enemy as well. someone she sees as a direct rival because she sees herself in them and maybe just maybe doesn't want to admit it

Grott lives in the city of Flagler in southern Miami-Dade County, an amalgam of all the places I grew up, sandwiched between US-1 and the Turnpike. If I had to put it on the map, it's kinda sorta Florida City (34), Homestead (33), Leisure City (kk), Naranja (jj), with some bits of Kendall (u), Cutler Bay (32), Coral Gables (28), and a dash of Key Largo (not pictured; Monroe County) for flavor.

If you grew up down here, you're familiar with the name Henry Flagler, or at the very least the cult of personality all the politicians and businessowners have built up around him. The old Overseas Railroad that connected Key West to the mainland cuts Flagler right down the middle, and Grott literally lives on the wrong side of the tracks. The Miami Metropolitan Area is a congested hellhole, but it's HIS congested hellhole! Grott's official responsibilities as a rook-in-training begin and end within the boundaries of the vacant lot he calls home, but he has appointed himself the town and county's Tutelary Gargoyle, sworn preserver, protector, and defender of everything and everyone between the Evergaldes and Biscayne Bay.

The forces of evil are on the rise in Florida, and Grott faces them head on every single day!

"Baki..." Yujiro starts. "You said that if she wanted to get into fighting, she could do it as an adult right? well... How the hell can she make that decision uninformed!?"That caught baki's attention.

Yujiro, Seeing that, smirked. "As her old man, you have final say on how to raise Tomoe! I acknowledge that. But giving her a taste of the possibilities! The potential she has! Isn't that the greatest gift anyone could give their grandchild?"

Baki would tense up for a moment, Making Tomoe nervous, She didn't want her family getting into an altercation on her behalf, Even if her grandfather really was insane.

Baki looked at androv, Still knocked out, Before he looked at his girl."Listen, You got lucky, Your brain was firing off at all cylinders just to keep you alive and safe. and the adrenaline flowing in your brain gave you more strength and flexibility than you really have on your own... "

"I... I really want to see where i can go with this! Not because you and mom said no, Or because grandpa wants me to do it! If i can be good at something... Just one single thing I don't care what it is, i want to see it through!"

with a speach like that, Baki's gaze softened. "Alright, We'll talk it over with your mom."

Notorious anti-gay crusader Anita Bryant dies aged 84

Anita Bryant, a former beauty queen, singer and high-profile US anti-gay rights campaigner, has died at the age of 84.

Bryant’s family announced that she died at her home in Edmond, Oklahoma, on December 16, 2024.

“May Anita’s memory and her faith in eternal life through Christ comfort all who embraced her,” her family said.

In the 1970s, Anita Bryant became politically involved by leading the extreme anti-gay “Save Our Children” campaign. She lobbied to scrap local laws in Florida prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation.

“I got involved only because they were asking for special privileges that violated the state law of Florida, not to mention God’s law,” she claimed in 1978.

Anita Bryant argued gay people were an “an abomination of God”. She said they should not be permitted to be teachers, weaponising sickening homophobic tropes in her campaigning of “deviant” gay people “recruiting” and abusing children.

“The recruitment of our children is absolutely necessary for the survival and growth of homosexuality… For since homosexuals cannot reproduce, they must recruit, they must freshen their ranks,” Bryant infamously said.

Anita Bryant got her wish: the protections in Dade County, Florida were repealed. Bryant then took her anti-gay campaigning on the road.

But she galvanised gay rights activists who organised protests against her.

By the end of the decade, Anita Bryant had lost thousands of dollars in sponsorship bookings over the backlash.

Anita Bryant gets a pie in the face

On October 14, 1977, Anita Bryant made a TV appearance where she claimed she “loved homosexuals, but hated their sin”.

As she spoke, a gay rights activist named Thom L Higgins threw a pie in Bryant’s face.

In another pie in the face for Anita Bryant years later, her granddaughter Sarah Green told her she was a lesbian and was marrying her girlfriend.

On her 21st birthday, Bryant sang “Happy Birthday” to Sarah over the phone and told her that if she had faith, the right man would come along.

“I just snapped and was like, ‘I hope he doesn’t come along. I’m gay, and I don’t want a man to come along,'” Sarah told Slate in 2021.

Bryant responded by telling her granddaughter that homosexuality is a delusion invented by the devil. Focusing on loving God would make her realise she’s straight, Sarah recalled her grandmother telling her.

“It’s very hard to argue with someone who thinks that an integral part of your identity is just an evil delusion,” Sarah said.
