I’m not gonna lie, I just don’t see what people are hating about Artrem’s characterization in the second anniversary. I thought it was pretty true to form.
My only real beef is that it felt shorter and off theme compared to the other 3 cards which is a huge shame and feels gross considering it’s such a momentous canon card.
BUT
Artem in the 2nd anniversary doesn’t feel super out of character.
He’s putting off engagement because he feels paralyzed by the act of telling Rosa what he feels/wants because he doesn’t know how to convey his feelings or propose in a way that matches his own expectations.
He’s being distant and aloof as a result, and Rosa is doing what she does best and hyper analyzing his behavior with wrong conclusions (that reflect more on outward situations than internal, since Artem still isn’t great at being open up about that stuff unlike Vyn who knows how to communicate well but withholds as a concerted choice, for example).
All of his background cards see him bobbing and weaving not just how Neil and his parents have affected him in front of Rosa, but also when Rosa or anyone else hurts his feelings/comes to a wrong conclusion about him/his intentions, with fleeting exceptions.
Master of deflecting further questions or the topic at hand with (mostly work) segues.
He’s still being cheered on and brought to reality by his work big sis Celestine, who is so invested in Artem and Rosa that she views it as a cherry on top to see them engaged after her wedding. Which is so lovely. And very in character for her—she loves to see the fruits of her labor happen front and center and now she can hold this memory close not just in regards to her wedding but in regards to Artem and Rosa, who she cherishes. Especially Artem! (Also the fact that Mr. Rodriguez is so on board….busy body power couple)
This in particular is where I feel people are just beefing to beef. Celestine has ALWAYS meddled. And this feels very in character for her to guide Artem where he needs to go in a way she likes. She does it in almost every card shes in!
And he is still struggling with his abandonment issues from Neil being gone and his parents not being around as much. He feels SO hard for Rosa and in a moment of high emotion and still a bit tipsy off alcohol he makes possessive comments which is also not out of character.
To me, it’s Artem feeling comfortable and going to the next step physically (and emotionally) by REALLY admitting that he’s insecure and his fears are manifesting as possessiveness ie YEARNING for Rosa and for more with her. He feels secure with Rosa. And he fears losing her just like he’s lost others. And he wants it to feel real. He doesn’t want to lose her to a case (Neil) or a career (his mother and father) or anything else!

He wants to feel like it isn’t a dream. He wants it to be solid, fully grounded in reality, in a way a lot of his personal relationships never get to be. No one could know about NXX and the full extent of his relationship with Neil (or the other members). He actively hid who his mother is and by extension who he is to her. Despite his relationships with Celestine and Rosa, he feels leagues away from his co-workers at large.

He wants people to KNOW that he has a truly personal relationship. He doesn’t want to for others or himself to see a large distance between himself and Rosa—like they’re strangers attached by business (like others in his life have been). Rosa is his partner, in all senses of the word.

Not just that, but it’s been a full year since Artem and Rosa started dating. In what world is it out of character for them to be familiar with intimacy. I kept seeing a lot of people saying Artem was too sexual and all he did was hold her and kiss her which he’s done……a lot, probably. They’ve been dating a year by now! The ending implies what we see is something they’ve done before but Artem would like to go farther. And Rosa is all for that but has never heard him say that before now! Because the repressed guy has been giving her repression.

Is the expectation truly that Artem’s first time making out and feeling up Rosa is this card? For real?
I have no idea what future cards will bring and I’m not interested in knowing until I can pull them in Global, but personally it feels like frustration toward future events is bleeding onto this card. Because what was presented does not feel disconnected from Artem’s side story, cards, or characterization as a whole.
There was just less time allowed to expand on what was presented which I agree is not ideal or even acceptable, especially for the 2nd anniversary. It should have been on par with the 1st in that regard, full stop.
But acting like this card pulled away from his established characterization in other cards in a huge way feels disingenuous. It did not! It was just rushed which I HATE SO MUCH. Like Rosa and Artem felt like they had the least time actually interacting within these 2nd anni cards!
And among these 2nd anni cards a big theme was family. Artem’s parents are certainly not dead so their exclusion from this proposal warranted at least some form of explanation. ESPECIALLY since his mother is someone Rosa knows and thinks fondly of and it certainly would have been interesting to see Celestine and Artem’s mother interact together.
His card lacked time to explore what he was feeling and cohesion to the 2nd anni theme, for sure. Which is really sad considering he is one of my favorite NXX guys. Like there are criticisms for sure but mine are more toward the structure of the card
#tears of themis#Artem shows a modicum of assurance in intimacy and suddenly it’s Too Out of Character#he’s a square not totally incompetent#I think it’s so funny Artem keeps getting knocked for being possessive when he is like far from alone in that behavior#EVEN ROSA HER SELF WAS PULLING IT IN THE 2ND ANNI#very directly with Vyn for example#like part of a repressed character is that when emotions do come out they’re often immature#this happens even in his highly praised cards like The Weeds/Gufeng#in fact the ending was just a more intense version of the The Weed’s main scene but since Rosa and Artem are actually in a relationship#it wasn’t just half hearted mumbling it was Artem full on SAYING his immature desires#also the proposing thing….people literally had me thinking he did it without permission like#I even re read some of my favorite cards to see if I was going crazy but NO#he mumbles or says never mind when he gets close to being open A LOT#and now that he’s being open but it sounds immature is Bad like???? repression in my repressed workaholic? it’s more likely than you think!

my two sentence pithy hopepunk post escaped containment - you never can predict what will! - and it was obviously never going to encompass the whole spectrum of story possibilities hopepunk obviously like, omg, people in the notes. but i reiterate!
Star Wars is hopepunk! not grimdark!
it doesn't mean there's not darkness or evil or bad in the stories or genre, but ultimately it's about the triumph of good or the possibility thereof!
personally, i find the focus on stories in the fascist government point of view loses that - and are honestly a drain - and I stand by that, but also, stop defining morally gray at me people! i do know the meaning even if i'm not writing out the damn definition!
also, morally gray does not automatically mean more interesting or more nuanced! (anyone saying that can fight me.) (i'm a wuss and too chronically ill for this so not really.)
choosing to be good, to do good in a world of increasing darkness and evil and selfishness is a fucking compelling story, and it can be handled with such complexity and delicacy if someone actually gives a shit and doesn't go "good vs evil is boring" automatically!

Brennan really said here is an absolute nightmare of a prison industrial complex perpetuated by a guy who has coined himself the Strife Emperor, bent on using people who disagreed with him or his agenda (or simply people he and his underlings needed to make an example of) to the absolute limit of their “usefulness” to further his goals and supplement the war he was waging elsewhere. It is a devastatingly brutal place that allows for those given a modicum of privilege and power to turn around and enact vicious cruelty on the ones seen as beneath them, designed intentionally to destroy their ability to hope or dream of a better future and it has been this way for years and years.
It was brought down by creatures considered so small and weak as to be insignificant, who, by working together for as long as it took, found the cracks in the foundations and brought down a seemingly impenetrable stone fortress.

series masterlist
⭑·゚゚·*:༅。.。༅:*゚:*:✼✿ ✿✼:*゚:༅。.。༅:*·゚゚·⭑
Being from the Undercity meant that from a young age you were particularly skilled at evasion. When Enforcers arrived, you were able to lie at the drop of a dime. At the mention of your now nonexistent family you could mask your emotions. Most importantly, you could get out of Piltover undetected.
Slyly turning corners, you’d finally emerged on the outside. Regret filled you, then.
You didn’t want to think of Jayce there—the fact that he would wake up alone. Truthfully you’d often reason that this was for the better, that you leaving would soften the blow of having to explain how fucked up you were. It was something you found yourself discussing often.
“I have a particularly vested interest in this…seeing as though I also fell for a Piltie.”
It was hard to be a Zaunite and not at least know of Vi. You’d actually met when you were younger. You swapped stories of lost families, hate for authority, and a penchant for being hardasses.
“I didn’t fall for him, Vi. He was just there when I needed someone.”
“Sure, but I was here, too. When that piece of shit lied to you…got married…I was here. You’re not all over me like you are with Jayce. So how do you explain that?”
You knew it was more than just sex with him as much as you hated to admit it. But there’d been countless examples of the between-worlds love story simply not working.
“Vi, you and the Kiramman girl didn’t even work. Again and again you two have tried and nothing…”
“Sometimes it’s just worth saying you tried. That despite everything, you opened up just that little bit.”
You’d downed drink after drink that night—the sting barely masking the nagging at your mind to just go see him. But the sadness you’d feel was always overrun with hate. He proved you right. The cycle continued. A month had passed and he hadn’t even looked for you.
You and Vi proved similar, again. When she suggested you take up fighting to release your tension, you hadn’t even thought twice. It was yet another way to remind yourself that you deserved to feel this. Every stupid decision you’d made up until this point warranted the physical pain.
It quickly got out of hand.
Before Jayce became a member of the council, he didn’t make a habit of leaving Piltover. Now that he was in a position of power, he found himself in Zaun often. It was important to him that he didn’t see you, though. The twinge in the pit of his stomach had only subsided moderately at the thought of you. Until the embers in his body had completely burned out—he wouldn’t give you the satisfaction of giving in. Of being good.
The opportunity to walk the Undercity afforded him time to observe things he’d later note in his proposition for a large-scale integration. He figured this was bigger than you somehow. If you ever did will yourself to feel even a modicum of what he felt for you, it’d be worth it to have made it safer for you. Regardless, he was still taken aback by how gritty Zaun was every time. He thought of his partner living here—hardly able to walk.
You saw him, then. He was passing a corner, clearly in thought. Something that crossed his mind had upset him. You wondered if it was about you. What you would give to be able to smooth the creases in his face, to tell him that whatever it was would be okay, to make certain it was.
But it wasn’t. You’d left. Again.
He should’ve expected to run into you. He’d never seen you look so disheveled; there was always an air of composure about you. But looking at you now, you’d been neglecting to take care of yourself.
It happened so fast. As if you felt the magnetic pull of his eyes on you. In the second that you’d turned to examine him, a crack hit the side of your face. You wanted to swing back, finish the fight you started, but you figured you deserved this. You’d let the rage take over. So when the punches came down and you started to black out, you couldn’t help the smile on your face.
_________
You jolted awake later, observing a man hobbling across the room.
“Viktor?”
He turned to you, “You know who I am?”
You sat up a bit, “Of course. It’s a pleasure to meet you, although I wish it was under better circumstances.”
“You must be the Zaunite girl.”
You interrupted, offended by the remark. “Excuse me-“
Viktor held up a hand to stop your incoming rant, he knew the feeling too well.
“My partner…is nothing if not consistent.” He sat down next to you, “Taking two helpless Undercity residents beneath his wing seems quite…fitting for Jayce.”
“You’re…from Zaun?”
He nodded. “I’m sure you understand the feeling of being around someone like Jayce.”
You nodded in response. The feeling of unease not needing further explanation.
“Jayce mentioned to me this plan he has. To consolidate Piltover and Zaun into one entity. Again, my partner fails to recognize the intricacies of having such an ambitious plan.”
“I…didn’t know about that. Makes sense that he would be so set on creating a utopia.”
You both laughed at that, knowing the man all too well.
You continued, “With Jayce, I feel like I’m always seeking something out. Like I am always waiting for the other shoe to drop, you know?” You shifted in your seat, trying to explain. “If I get ahead of the bad I know is coming, I can avoid getting hurt. But that feels so…pessimistic?”
After a while, Viktor stood again. “I would be remiss to call a person such as yourself a pessimist.”
He slowly made his way over to a cabinet, pulling out an umbrella.
“Despite my life's work here, I truly have nothing else to offer you except this…and time.” He pushed the umbrella into your hands, “It should rain soon. If you want to get away before he comes back, you should go now.”
You slid off of the bench that you were seated on. “But why?”
He motioned toward the door, following behind you. “Jayce Talis is the most brilliant man I have ever known, and yet he fails to see the world with the nuance it demands.”
There was an understanding between you again. That reconciliation was a lot to face. That although there was an inexplicable care for the man, it was hard for him to understand you both sometimes.
“Thank you.”
——————
The umbrella did little for protecting your body as you ran through the storm, yet you’d left a mental note to thank Viktor at some point.
Fury had bubbled in you in a split second, “Shit!” You kicked one of your chairs in frustration. The thought of Jayce going out of his way to make sure you were safe and arriving to you gone again was painful. You wanted to feel numb. The desire for nothing about Jayce Talis to ever harm you again was debilitating.
A banging on the door made you freeze. It couldn’t…
A knock again, and the voice you longed to hear from.
“It’s me.”
Jayce called your name, his voice breaking with every repetition.
You swung the door open. He looked so defeated—out of breath and covered in water. He’d clearly not thought to grab anything to shield him from the rain.
With your usual feigned annoyance you broke the silence. “I told you to never come here.”
There was an agreement made between you two, that you would always come to him. You weren’t embarrassed of your home, far from it. But you did hate the feeling of relinquishing control. When with Jayce, you always reserved that right to leave at your own discretion—with him here you instantly felt the restraints.
He huffed at that, his usual apprehension replaced with exasperation.
“Shut up.”
He pulled you in by your neck, kissing you as if to punctuate the command. He moved you back into your house, closing the door behind you both. Every fear had evaporated from your mind. It was always so good with him. You knew he would take care of you in every way.
Everything between you remained unspoken for now, your rain-soaked clothes finding their way to your floor.
Jayce’s physique is one that you loved, but became rather daunting the more he’d taken control.
He pushed you again, this time leaving you on display for him on your bed. He looked you up and down slowly. It made you nervous—the lack of readable expression on his face. When you’d finally made eye contact, he broke it quickly, reaching toward his clothes on the floor. He returned to you quickly, his body fully enveloping yours.
He kissed your neck sweetly, a way only he could. He made note to suck down on your telltale spots—where you’d been the most sensitive. Making his way to your chest, he looked up at you with a mix of desire and hurt in his eyes. In his left hand he’d massaged your nipple between his fingers, his mouth finding the other. Your chest heaved. Your eyes fluttered shut. You were distracted. He knew the trick very well, seeing as you’d fooled him more than he could count.
A sudden pulse and sucking sensation jolted you to attention. Jayce had a coy look on his face—and his free hand was on what you had to assume was a new prototype.
You instinctively circled your hips toward him, craving more. He pressed you down, stopping your movement. The way he continued rubbing on your clit made you fight the urge to writhe against him.
Your face was suddenly met with his and a peck was left on your lips. When he broke contact, he simultaneously turned the vibration up to the max. You were completely inconsolable. He watched your coherence leave your mind with a menacing smile—still refusing to utter a word.
You wanted to say something, anything. You fought to question what this sudden change was about, why he was so adamant about tearing you apart right now. But part of you could tell that this was his way of keeping you silent. A sensation this good always left you speechless—your jaw slack and eyebrows pinched together.
The max setting was a continued pulse and grip on your clit that you couldn’t even process. You weren’t sure where the pain and pleasure met but it was too damn good to stop.
He kept looking at you. He knew you’d be done soon. All of the signs were there. It was sort of torturous for you to try and form words in your mind and have nothing come to fruition.
Having him stare at you with a look of disdain in his eyes was even worse. The once yellow color that would wrap you up like the warmth of the Sun now pierced into you.
He still coaxed you along, needing to prove a point—for you to finish. Within a few more seconds you jolted and froze against him, your legs tightening around his waist.
He quickly brushed off your grip on his torso, moving to stand. He turned his back to you, discarding his prototype, and steadying himself with his hands on his hips.
“Is this what you wanted?” He didn’t look at you. He didn’t have to; he knew you were confused by this entire thing. “Is this all you ever need from me? To show up, make you feel better for a while, and then watch you leave?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you know? Because at this point I can’t tell.”
“Me either.”
Jayce finally turned to you, observing your head in your hands. “W-we can’t keep doing this. It’s not healthy.”
“I know.”
He moved a bit closer to you, surely angry now.
“Are you going to say more than a few words to me or will this be the same as always?”
You spoke under your breath, barely audible over the sound of the rain. “What else do you want me to say, Jayce?”
Words threatened to spill from you. The force with which you’d pushed them down had left you. A figurative steam had started to escape you, a bubbling on the verge of spilling over. Looking at Jayce was often the only catalyst you’d needed, that remained a constant today, it seemed.
You peered over at him now, “What do you want me to say, hm? That I feel fucking stupid because I let myself feel something I swore I would never? That you’re the only person to make me feel something other than fear?” You dropped down from the bed, looking up at him. Tears that you’d held in finally met the brim of your eyes. “That,” you paused, “I care about you so much that the thought of it being more makes me want to die. That because I felt that before…with someone else…and was ruined entirely because of it that I can’t let myself be happy. Is that what you want?” You wiped your face swiftly, looking away, “Is it?”
He surprised you when he carefully brought you into a hug. The grip of one hand on the back of your head, the other on your back was cathartic. You recounted every instance for which you’d felt safe with Jayce, there were too many to count.
He inhaled slowly and let out an even deeper exhale. “What I want is for you to meet me where you can.”
He pulled back a bit, his arms trailing your arms as he grasped both of your hands. He slowly sank to kneel in front of you, both knees planted to the carpet. Despite you both being completely bare, his grip around your body was far from sexual. He laid his head on you, his forehead relaxing into your lower abdomen.
“For every night that you’re willing to stay, I promise to be with you the next day.”
You stared ahead, the man’s head in your lower peripheral. The sheer magnitude of that kind of commitment already weighed on you. But you figured, who better to carry the load with than Jayce? You didn’t need to be strong enough to bear it alone; you knew the golden boy had enough fortitude to make the heaviest of burdens feel light.
“Say something…please.”
You blinked, “Okay.”
“Okay?” He leaned back, looking at your face.
You nodded.
The tough exterior the man had worn soon dissipated. A veil so uncomfortable for him that he didn’t recognize himself in the last few minutes. He nuzzled into you, grasping at your skin like you would disappear into thin air.
The whole ordeal had happened so quickly, you didn’t even get to comment on the way his appearance had changed.
“I like the new hair. It really says tortured scientist to me.”
He hadn’t actually noticed his lack of upkeep these last few weeks. He chuckled, knowing he’d pinpointed how you didn’t take care of yourself—and yet here he was.
“Do you see what you’ve done to me? I didn’t even shave my face.”
You brushed a piece of hair behind his ear. “I actually think the rough look is pretty sexy. Maybe we should stop talking for another month.”
“Too soon.”
“Is it?” You lifted a leg over his shoulder, “We shouldn’t talk about it then, right?”
He tilted his face, rubbing into the inner skin on your thigh. He nodded, but got distracted by the sight in front of him. You were already dripping, a mix of arousal from before and now. He looked up through his lashes, asking for your approval.
“Go ahead.”
You would think that Jayce was starving the way he started to devour you. His head between your thighs, his tongue pushing into you, and his hands kneading at your legs was a combination that always had you weak in front of him. If you somehow could stay this way forever, spread thin, you would. The added friction of the stubble on his face hurt so good. You were sure there’d be a burn on you later—but you would wear it with honor.
In the way you admired his fingers you would give the utmost praise to Jayce’s mouth. You shivered, his tongue flattening over you, a long and final swipe collecting every drop of you. He tapped your leg on his shoulder twice before lowering it. He made a show of licking his lips while he laid back on the bed.
“Come take what you need.”
You’d been in this position before—the man beneath you dripping in precum. You straddled him, the muscle memory kicking in. You let your lips trail across his collarbone. You’d yet to let him in you, rubbing your wetness up and down him. You made certain he was rock hard as you slowly connected his shoulder blades in an assortment of bruises. Eventually you gripped him, circling your hole with the head of his dick.
He rested his hands on your hips, pressing down a bit. “Please-“
You slowly sank onto him, letting out a puff of air at the stretch.
Leaning toward his ear, you spoke again. “I think you’ve waited long enough.”
Without missing a beat, you pushed up and down on him. He instinctively met you, slapping into you at a slow rhythm he knew you’d loved. You rolled your neck, the piercing in your stomach was worth the time apart. You’d wait for him, you thought. It was the least you could do after he’d been so understanding with you. A month…a year…any amount of time was worth seeing him splayed so pretty beneath you.
The wet sounds of you two slowly working each other could have been considered lewd had it not been for Jayce’s whimpers. Suddenly, the sounds bouncing off your walls seemed rather sweet.
“Mmm, f-fuck,” and he continued like that for a while. Resounding sounds of pleasure and pain vibrated in your ears—urging you to speed up.
Your deliberate circlings into him had become less controlled bounces. You were close. It didn’t matter how much longer, Jayce always found a way to finish with you.
“C-can I?” He looked between you, the way you molded together so well. He always asked before he came in you. You definitely should’ve cared more about the implications, but your fervent nods made him snap up into you even harder.
He noticed your irregular movement, flipping you two over. He was above you now—a sight you were getting more familiar with these days. An inadvertent smile found your lips, then, as he scrambled beside you. He immediately started the vibration on your clit, pumping into you at the same time. You clawed at his back, your walls squeezing into him, coaxing the release out of him.
“Need you to cum, baby. Let me feel you,” he uttered between moans.
“Jayce, I-“
“Its okay…its all okay.”
He always had a way with words. Even when the situation found you both entangled with one another—he found a way to reassure you that you were safe. The thought alone had your legs wrapped around his back, finally finishing with him. Your entire body pulsed as he worked you thoroughly. He slipped away from you with a groan, his hand swiping at you. Before you could protest, he sucked on a drenched finger, cleaning it completely.
“Sweeter than I remember.”
You both laid there, heaving for breath but not a word exchanged. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Jayce fighting sleep. Without thinking, you reached to turn off the lights, draping yourself over his chest. He sighed and kissed your forehead—finally allowing himself rest.
——————
Jayce woke in the morning, the Sun’s rays meeting his eyelids with a heat that forced him to relinquish sleep. He felt around for you but as he’d suspected…nothing. He craned his head to the side, eyebrows raising a bit.
“Sorry, did I wake you?”
You were there.
You scrambled a bit, “I’m sorry, I stepped out and went to the Lanes really quick. Vander’s not the best cook but I figured you might be hungry…I’m starving-“
He let out a breath he’d been holding, “It’s good to see you.”
You smiled, “You too.”

image generation remains one of the most benign usages of “AI”, speaking as a “skilled artist” with a fucking modicum of class consciousness, and it is insane to me that the most vocal contingents allegedly against this technology making the world worse seem completely uninterested in pushing forward any meaningful dialogue about what this technology is actually doing to, for example, search engines. publicly shaming people who wouldn’t have commissioned art in the first place for not commissioning more art reminds me so strongly of people still thinking we can moralize our way into universal masking by reminding people how wrong they are to not mask at all. like after years you’d think people would realize they’re looking at the beast’s whiskers and not the beast but here we are again and again 🤪

Nevermore Theory - I am 99% convinced that Annabel’s father killed both Annabel Lee and Lenore
1. The wording of the Dean’s message doesn’t mean someone who loved Annabel Lee the most of everyone, it’s someone who loved her more than anything else. Lenore, yes, but also Annabel’s father. With his wife/Annabel’s mother seemingly out of the picture, Annabel would become someone he loved above all else.

2. Look at their expressions in the panel below, especially Annabel. It’s not anger- it’s fear and desperation; she’s clearly pleading with someone. Now- true that we’ve only seen this type of desperation from Annabel with Lenore and no one else (yet) but the reason it’s only been with her is because Annabel loves Lenore. She also loves her father. So much so that one of her first protests when Lenore proposes her idea to marry Annabel as Leo is basically “I can’t just leave my father behind”.

3. Fairly obvious but worth stating- the Deans clearly wanted Annabel to believe it was Lenore and talk about that plan like it was an intentional manipulation rather than just them revealing a fact. Their use of “meddle” is especially pretty damning here.

4. Despite Annabel’s obvious affections for him and the fact that he gave her a modicum of control over her life (not choosing a suitor by himself and calling it a day) Ira is very much not the shining example of a good father.
He’s dismissive of Annabel’s anxiety/general mental health (which definitely did not affect her coping mechanisms and the way she comforts others profoundly nosiree). Even in the panel below, look at his eyes. He’s not watching Annabel at all, he’s looking around to make sure they’re alone- he doesn’t actually care about soothing his daughter, he cares that no one can see her panic.

He also treats her like a trophy or a prize, with Annabel herself even admitting that the only reason he let her have aforementioned control is because he found the idea novel; not because he wished for his daughter’s happiness.

Learning that his only child was running off to get married to a madwoman seems like the type of thing he miiiight not be cool with.
5. Annabel Lee is absolutely terrified of Lenore revealing that they know each other and how. Now, while this could be simply chalked up to her not wanting to ruin her plan, she would literally rather die than have Lenore tell Duke. It’s hard to imagine that kind of conviction for a plan that’s only spanned a week, and very easy to imagine that type of conviction in a woman who remembers how horribly the last time their relationship was revealed went.

Like, Lenore was trying to save her from falling to her death and Annabel is absolutely terrified- not of her imminent death but of Lenore telling Duke.
TLDR; Ira Whitlock you are guilty until proven innocent I fear
(To be fair to him, in my mind he was aiming to shoot Lenore and Annabel got in his way)

for college i frequently have to use "lockout" anti-cheat software like respondus lockdown that totally seizes control of my computer (which is bullshit, but i digress) and i've adopted the three word password method to deal with it with the relevant accounts i have to use with that type of software. i struggle with adhd so this has been the most efficient method for me because i can remember "blast fish motorcycle" with some numbers or characters tossed in versus a long 20+ jumbled string of characters i would NEED a post-it note or a password manager for.
one of my professors suggested the three word method WRT linux command line work with expediently logging in and managing a server while having a modicum of security that isn't just "name1234", with the idea that if we're setting up a machine or can't access the internet while we're working, it's not an inaccessible disaster.
in the event of situations like this what's your recommendation? if this is an annoying ask i'm sorry btw, i'm trying not to throw a curveball at you.
There are good reasons sometimes to use a passphrase rather than a complex password and you've given a couple good examples, though I would say for the server example especially you shouldn't be doing "correct horse battery staple" or "blast fish motorcycle", you should be doing "fulminate igneous dodecahedron" (words that are not in any lists of those most commonly used in the English language) AND you should be having a randomizer select the words - aaaand even then I'm more likely to do something like the " Atss"twotpawotsw64 " lyric initialism example. I've got one of those for my password manager for work and it's really automatic to type now while still being long and complex.

*me, with tears of frustration in my eyes* rick didn't include annabeth's crush on luke or luke's pseudo-crush on annabeth for no reason! it is not something that needs to be cut because it's 'gross'! it serves thematic purpose! it adds to characterization! guys! please!
annabeth is twelve, and luke is the guy she's looked up to since she was seven. she not only has that bond, but she has the admiration from him getting his own quest. she has a lot of hero worship going for him, and it's really not unreasonable that she would like him or even that she would think of him as more than a sibling. beyond that, it's a great example of how a person who has never received real, unconditional love can become unhealthily attached to someone who is not good for them just because they've been shown a modicum of respect. if you want to look at it from a percabeth perspective, it could even tie into how her character has to learn the difference between love and kindness from a place of love and respect (i.e. percy) vs love and kindness from a place of obligation and manipulation (i.e. luke as kronos' vessel)
on luke's side, especially with him calling her his little sister now (in the show) and him literally turning into kronos later, it's symbolism for how he's being pulled farther and farther onto the dark side. as kronos takes over his body, he sees her less and less as a sister and more and more of something else, something that would be considered dark and unhealthy by anyone not on the dark side (for good reason), until eventually she has to remind him of their years on the run when he considered her a sister: "Family, Luke. You promised."
you're supposed to be grossed out by it! that means the theme is working!
you're supposed to see a traumatized 12 year old with a crush on her 19 year old mentor and think, "hey, that's weird! i wonder if her not getting any love or attention until she met him plays a role in their relationship?" and eventually see a 24 year old get a villain-induced crush on a 16 year old and think, "hey, that's really weird! i wonder if his turn to the dark side and how that turn happened twisted his view of her?" and ultimately think, "i wonder what that says about the type of trauma that develops in kids who grew up thinking they were unloved, especially since the author specifically wrote the book for his son with disabilities, the author who used to be a teacher, a profession that regularly encounters kids that are actively being abused and neglected?"
anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk
edit: this post is not speculation! i'm not trying to say i don't think they're going to include annabeth's crush! i am perfectly aware that we are only two episodes in! this post is in response the people i keep seeing say they're glad because they think Luke's little sister comment means they're not going to include the "gross stuff from the books" (other's wording, not mine), and I was trying to explain why including it would be a positive. sorry, i really thought i made that clear

PSA: Back to the beginning / reinventing the wheel
🧠 I know we all forget things because this has dragged on for so long (which I don't think Lukola intended btw) and Lukola's relationship history is so long. However, if you never understood what happened in this scenario or that scenario, then do your due diligence and figure it out! Don't wait for someone to explain it to you - all the data you need to analyze things is right there. Or get in a group chat where you can be part of a group think or befriend someone to brainstorm together.
📝 Occasionally you'll get a mini recap from me but many times you'll get a repost saying read this again. It's not productive for me to keep reinventing the wheel - going back to explain what happened during Italy, for example, or why the Instyle stunt (which wasn't a stunt at all) happened or why A was around to begin with or when Lukola got engaged or had baby Newts. Oddly enough, anyone who takes even a modicum of time to look a little deeper most often comes to the same overall conclusion.
🗓 Lukola hasn't launched in 10 mos. since the end of the WT... you've had plenty of time to sit down for an afternoon or two to figure it out. Read any good Lukola blog, or just go back and review the press tour to the present. It's even better now, because several things have played out that we've gotten confirmation of that we hadn't before - baby Newts, the NDA, etc.
🚀 Also, please don't keep asking me when I think Lukola will launch! I have no idea at this point. I can tell you what the signs are or what I believe we're trending toward when I see it, but we haven't had anything pointing in the Lukola direction for a minute. It's been alot of adjacent narratives and misdirection, unfortunately.
Lastly, those of you who are getting tired of this after a few mos., I feel ya. Now imagine us OGs who have been around since the beginning of the press tour, or those who have been following since S3 filming, and take a long deep sigh... we'll get there but it won't have been w/ out some major patience and resilience. I appreciate you all who have stayed on board despite the challenges. 🙏🚢 💪

I love that, despite how reserved and nice Suo seems on the surface compared to someone like Sakura who’s outwardly gruff and eager to fight, it’s really in your best interest to fight Sakura instead of Suo. At least Sakura will leave you with your dignity mostly intact. Suo isn’t here for a two sided fight conversation, he’s not interested in listening to his opponents, only toying with them and then dropping them once he’s gotten his fun out of them. It’s just such a fun contrast between them
What's interesting about Sakura wanting to fight others is that in the beginning of WBK, he only used to pick fights when he felt threatened or provoked. Think of it as a wounded animal's only defense mechanism (but in a more unserious way).

But with Suo, he not only wanted to fight him, but Sakura declared that they will fight at some point, despite him only observing Suo in action. He didn't necessarily feel threatened, but more-so intrigued/interested despite his criticisms. This is crazy when you consider how ‘reluctant’ Sakura was at getting to know people earlier in the story, and how withdrawn of a character Suo is—coupled with Umemiya’s philosophy of fights being a conversation to get to know your opponent better.

Suo's fights aren't exactly fights in the traditional sense, they're more like one-sided beatdowns haha. Though there is a sadistic undertone with his behavior, I feel like it's more of a hidden/restrained anger that he takes out on his opponents. KEEL is the most obvious example, but I really do find it interesting how Suo remained rather respectful to Kaito before he started yapping about how wrecking havoc is fun.

Unlike Suo though, Sakura is more likely to treat you with some modicum of respect since you're either a small fry to take care of, or a challenge that he wants to understand better (ie. following Ume's advice). Their personalities are reflected in their fighting styles—Sakura is straightforward and direct, while Suo remains passive and likes to ridicule others occasionally.

Suo and Sakura have tons of contrast with each other — I like to joke that Suo is an 'Anti-Sakura' in a way, because their differences are so stark when you compare these two together. In fact, I’d argue the only similarities that are specifically unique to them are their ‘irregular’ eyes. I could make a whole write-up on how opposing they are in WBK, but I don’t want to get too carried away here lol

Not all kilts are created equal, either
At the rate things are drastically mutating, as far as cons and fan events are concerned, it would seem the most democratic way to meet, greet and grab an autograph from S is to swallow even the most remote idea of self-esteem and join the crowds on that Sassenach Winter Tour. Beat the pavement with the huddled masses and wait for Ginger Jesus to wink encouragingly, as your knees give way and you melt into a puddle of fuzzy love for... Ahem... no, let's hope not, my quill got the better of my reason, on this one.
This will go on and on and on, until the Last Living Woman on Earth ever to have been touched by JAMMF's self-evident charm will stop writing idiocies like this one:

You would never be able to compare Glenmorangie and SS, just like you wouldn't do the same about S and Harrison Ford, excuse me. At least if you would like to keep some modicum of integrity, here.
I am sorry, Ford and Glenmorangie did not copy anything. They just used a beloved piece of garment, the kilt, to their advantage. The rugged (but sexy and ultimately interesting and kind) Highlander in a kilt was not invented by Diana Gabaldon, nor definitively embodied by Sam Roland Heughan.
'Erself explained many times over she could have chosen anything else (aliens immediately came to my sick mind, but perhaps not the best option, after all) when she first started writing that damned book. But an old Dr Who episode, featuring a Highlander named Jamie McCrimmon and then a punctual subplot detail in Eric Linklater's book Prince in the Heather, mentioning Clan Fraser's only survivor after Culloden sealed the deal. I did not invent these, even Wikipedia knows 😉. In doing so, she simply (and wisely profitably, it would seem) chose one of the most popular and intriguing cultural tropes - Scotland. The rest was easy enough, but never forget that on a different inspiration whim, we could be talking all the same about Jaime, the Impetuous Pirate of the Caribbean (Voyager trivia, anyone?) or even Jacques, the French fin-de-siècle gentleman thief. That she chose Scotland is our delight (I doubt Shipper Mom wouldn't have zapped over a pirate series, after all), and S's lifetime lucky strike, that's all.
Scotland has been immensely popular and fantasized about, from The Borders to the Kamchatka Peninsula, ever since Walter Scott published The Lay of the Last Minstrel, in 1805, to rousing success. And even more so, since Queen Victoria and Prince Albert first visited and fell in love with it, in 1842. All things Scottish, from the tartan to the sense of honor, never ceased to fascinate people all around the world. The Outlander universe is just one of Scotland's latest representations in popular culture and, forgive me for being blunt, not even the best known one.
And excuse me once more, men in kilts have been around ever since, too. John Brown, Victoria's morganatic spouse, included. For better, rather than for worse. My own mind doesn't have to travel very far just to immediately remember Sean Connery, but here is an updated list of celebrities who apparently think the kilt is fashionable as hell and tells a very interesting story of virility and fortitude: https://help.scottishkiltshop.com/hc/en-us/articles/18545441581069-How-Hollywood-Celebrities-Embrace-the-Kilt . It's pleasantly enough written and makes for quite an instructive, updated overview of what the kilt really means in popular culture and how it is being constantly used to ventilate above positive messages & values.
To write that Ford used Heughan's persona in that #ad is akin to uninformed blindness. To go even further and talk with confidence about associative marketing is adding insult to injury and proving the person does not have the remotest clue of what she is writing about.
To cut the story short, associative marketing is simply a sales' strategy directed to minority groups and/or fringe communities. A classic example is Tupperware selling its plastic tchotchkes to moms all around the world and by doing so, peddling the dream of gifting them extra time for themselves (finally!). In other words, the focus of the sales strategy is being mindful about a specific set of needs and priorities that must be addressed. You are selling a product alright, but you are selling it to a niche. Glenmorangie is the opposite of that, in fact: it is a worldwide known brand, appreciated and enjoyed, sometimes excessively, by men and women (and frat boys and girls), irrespective of age, cultural context (yes, even in Tehran!) or social status. I honestly fail to see where the associative marketing can be found in Glenmorangie's poster and would rather think of Sassenach Spirits' own strategy in those terms. Especially when you think again about those huddled masses beating the pavement in front of a non-descript liquor store, on Main Street, America (or Industrial Zone, America, to be more exact).
Oh, well, she probably wanted to say Glenmorangie is coat-tailing Norouzi's genius ideas, which would be disingenuous, if not ridiculous, above anything else. But it surely is my deepest, secret and probably naively altruistic wish for this cheap Sassenach Tour gimmick to be shelved aside, before things become truly, heartbreakingly pathetic.
Make no mistake. I am such a loyal idiot that I am still confident. But the clock is ticking, and not to their advantage. So, is that it, is this how things are going to happen, from now on: extortionate fan events and #silly bottle signing sessions?
What would JAMMF, aka Jamie Roy, the Edinburgh spirits' smuggler, think about all of this?

Hypnosis - Everything can work
It's the combination of the desire to be hypnotized and the understanding that you can be hypnotized that combines together to make someone susceptible to trance. If you know how easy it is to go under, but you don't want to, you won't. Vice versa, if you want really bad to drop, but feel that it's impossible to do so, you won't fall.
Some people are in the second boat- quite a few, actually. If you want to be hypnotized, but think that your mentality or a certain mental illness prevents you from being hypnotized, you misunderstand. Everyone can experience trance. Many frequently have and didn't attribute the state they were in as hypnosis. It doesn't even require the ability to picture something in your head, or the ability to focus. Hypnosis can be brief, it can be long, but it is accessible by everyone. You need only notice that you're being hypnotized, and recognize that it can happen, in order for it to happen.
Take for example, right now. You've been reading down this informative post, your curiosity piqued by the knowledge I have to offer. And thusly, you have locked your attention on my words, here. Eager to learn, happy to recognize the hypnotic nature of a good monologue. Even if you don't picture a comfortable place like your back porch on a cool day or a beanbag when it's raining outside, you can still find it possible to recognize how my words affect you.
Even if they affect you minimally, it's possible that you still notice something as small as a change in your breathing. You see, small changes, however noticeable, tend to occur when you take note of the fact that someone is trying to hypnotize you. You can find it easy or difficult to follow what I'm saying, but ultimately you will be able to recognize that I am indeed trying to hypnotize you in this moment.
For some, the mere mention that someone may be actively hypnotizing them could lead to the familiar fuzzy feelings of trance to overtake them. Maybe you can already feel the sensations you recognize as trance. Maybe you don't know what hypnosis feels like! Maybe you've never been hypnotized (or you feel like you haven't) and you're just curious enough to keep reading. Either way, you are reading, and I am hypnotizing you, which means you are feeling at least somewhat different.
Considering that many experience trance in different ways from others, it's not entirely possible to say exactly how my words are making you feel. It could be any number of sensations or ideas. As long as you're capable of receiving sensory input or holding onto imaginative thoughts in some capacity, you are likely feeling open or even following along so closely that the world around you is no longer important.
Because you've read this far, I can imagine that I've successfully managed to at least entertain you. If you're feeling hypnotized, that's great! Keep feeling those sensations and keep allowing your behavior to adjust according to my words. If not, that's fine too! I've entertained you enough to provide you with some useful information that may assist you in any number of hypnotic endeavors.
Of course, all trances must end, and so must every Tumblr post. Finite and measurable, this little script and informative text must now draw to a close. You'll be able to awaken from any trance you may be in- as everyone is fully in control of their own hypnosis experience. Don't let anyone trick you into thinking that you can't resist, or that you absolutely must stay entranced. This is a sign that you're either doing a discussed CNC scene, which is fine, or you're being approached by an abusive dominant, which is less fine. (Very important distinction!)
Either way, thank you for reading my post! I hope it provided at least a modicum of entertainment.
Farewell, and don't forget to stay hydrated!

Inevitable been thinking about how that one anon viewed Laios as a monsterfucker, and I think it made me realize the source of that confusion:
I think many monsterfuckers, and also many (dare I say most) monster devourers like Laios, both derive their desire from the same source: a latent wish for apoteratosis, the wish to become a monster.
Linguistic side note: apotheosis, becoming a god, breaks down to apo- (towards the end point), theo (god), -osis (turn noun into verb), so I swapped in the root for monster, hence apo- terato -osis. Side note over.
Monster devourers are a rather rare archetype in (mainstream) fiction, but they do exist. Those who seek to mimic or emulate the monster's power, those who find them endlessly fascinating and study them well past the point of obsession, those who wish to show their dominance over the monster by proving that they can kill and eat it... and I think Laios is the first I've seen who takes the title quite so literally, where his obsession goes straight to monsters-as-food.
Monsterfuckers, meanwhile wish to become close to the monster in a non destructive way (or at least a typically less destructive one, usually the only casualties are furniture and few bandages are needed, but I'll acknowledge that exceptions definitely exist). They wish to bond with it, to connect to it through lust or intimacy, to be able to stand at its side. They wish, on some level, to join it. Side note, I'm not saying this is true of all teratophiles, some are just kinky and driven by the thought of positive physical pleasure, or who find the personality of a given monster appealing, but I do think the apoteratotic desire is an underlying driver for many, I'd guess well more than half, it's just a subtle enough thing that I don't think most are consciously aware of it.
There's also a third point to the secret apoteratosis triangle that might surprise you: the monster slayer. Sure many, even most, slayers are driven by something like disgust or xenophobia or even rationality, but a significant minority land in the "if you can't join 'em, beat 'em" a.k.a. "I can't be you, so I'll destroy you" camp.
And these three reactions are, I notice, the three most common reactions that people have to one thing: the unattainable desire. The sentence begins "I cannot have it..." and these three camps end it different ways.
The teratophages say "so I shall dominate it." They seek what power they can grasp so they can have some modicum of control, so they can try to "have" it anyway. The kaiju corpse scavengers in Pacific Rim including refined and suave mob boss types just smacks of this attitude.
The teratophiles say "so I'll get as close as I can." There's a werewolf romance book where they're considering trying to turn the girlfriend, though they have no idea if she'll survive it (boyfriend was turned by accident then abandoned, so he's clueless, and they haven't found any others to teach them), and she says that she's fine remaining human, because she shares the power through him. "I have it, because you have it." The façade eventually breaks and in a vulnerable moment she confesses that she'd be willing to risk even a likely death to try to be turned. When they get in contact with an elder who can turn her safely she doesn't even wait a week.
The teratophobes write that whole sentence as "if I can't have it, then no one can." I'm sure everyone has seen enough examples of this behavior to understand that it's just a kind of love turned corrupt.
I'm not the first to notice the underlying apoteratotic urge: the aforementioned werewolf story, indeed many werewolf and vampire stories romanticize the transformation of a human into a monster. Back to Dungeon Meshi, author Ryōko Kui is fully aware of it with how Laios's underlying desire is eventually brought out of the subtext and explicitly named as his dysphoria with humanity, and his wishing that he could be a monster. For Laios that desire skipped right past the socially unacceptable monsterfucking, explicitly a form of bestiality in that world, to the socially acceptable devouring, though tempered by his respect and admiration of monsters into a desire for symbiosis with them. He cannot become one in truth (or so he thought when younger) but he could become part of their food web. It's as close as he thought he could get. Of course, that's the Watsonian explanation; the Doylist explanation is that Ryōko Kui wanted to subvert expectations, and also wanted to explore this angle of it.
So, all taken together, I think people read Laios as monsterfucker coded simply because teratophiles, teratophages, and teratophobes all share the same root motivation: apoteratosis. Thus, all three branches are coded very similarly.
It's similar to something I've seen in Batman fandom: some fans project romantic love between various members of the Batfamily, which is both wildly against canon and thoroughly hated by some other branches of fandom. But it is understandable, since familial love and romantic love both come from the same root, love of another. If someone doesn't recognize the simultaneous similarities and distinctions, it's all to easy to conflate them. If you don't actually understand the distinction, then the signs of affection between siblings might look the same as the signs of affection between lovers. Likewise, if you don't understand the distinction, the urge of the monster devourers (or ecologists) might look the same as the urge of the monster fucker.
I've sat on this for near a month, partially because of my repeated absences, partially because I wanted to honor it with an equally in-depth response. But 24 days later I've still got nothing, while I can't speak for that particular person I think in general you hit the nail right on the head for the base roots. I got no notes. Even with Laios...like all I can add is how supplemental materials actually confirm he did want to be a monster researcher but found books too dry, the only one who seemed to really *get* monsters was shunned. and how wild he goes when talking with an actual werewolf, "The existence I thought unobtainable is now right in front of me".
#even that last part. like as someone who got married only for us to realize that we may have the wrong kind of love#then broke up but stayed good friends and roommates but throughly not attracted to each other.#yeeeeeeah.#not tournament#answers

tamashina mina/cloudcalling on the savanna — missed opportunity
Since this event will be rerunning in the JP server this month, I wanted to share something I felt the event was lacking. (Well. Besides the things I already mentioned here—)
There’s a section of the event dedicated to exploring the markets and sampling local cuisines. I don’t take issue with this since it’s a staple of any hometown event. However, I think that it’s a shame we didn’t get any unique interactions between Leona and the NPCs in the market. Supposedly Leona isn’t well-liked or acknowledged in a positive manner by his people, so it would have been nice to see it portrayed more prominently on-screen. Maybe the vendors and other customers don’t necessarily go out of their way to insult him to his face, but maybe they’d be whispering amongst themselves or side-eyeing him (something which the other students notice) as he passes.
The framing of the purchases implies that Kifaji is the main person going around buying food for us to try. Lilia, Vil, Kalim, and Yuu/Grim also shop around for souvenirs. The NPCs are, for the most part, not directly interacting with Leona (save for that time he gets annoyed enough to get away from the group and buys some candies to eat grumpily by himself). This would have been the perfect time to overhear the vendors and customers gossiping about Leona. It would show us how his people feel about him, not just what the palace servants feel (as we saw in his post-ON flashback). It would give us a better understanding of what kinds of comments the people make about him even to this day, how that wears on him mentally and emotionally.
And what if Leona walks in on that kind of gossip??? I want to see how he’d handle it… (I don’t see him getting mad but instead reacting with a sarcastic quip or fake politeness to remove himself from the situation. Then he broods and angsts and doomposts about it later in private 💀)
While this ire obviously wouldn’t be resolved in the event itself, I think setting up this apprehension around Leona would enhance the payoff of what he does later in the event. This is especially true considering that we also had the previous year’s winners openly upset with Leona for not doing his royal duties and training them. Make it clear that Leona is on everyone’s bad side. Then when he comes through in the end and earns the respect of last year’s winners, it signals to us that—even if just a little at a time—Leona is capable of switching around the common attitude his people have toward him. It establishes a modicum of hope.
I guess maybe they didn’t want to spoil his backstory for anyone that didn’t read book 2 by the point the event ran??? But I still feel like it’s possible to write dialogue in a way that implies a dynamic or relationship without outright spilling everything. You don’t even need dialogue. Maybe just have there be a general air of discomfort as soon as the group enters the market; Vil (a celebrity who is perceptive about public opinion and how the public’s gazes linger) might notice this and ask what’s wrong, only to have Leona brush it off. (That way, we at least get the idea that Leona isn’t liked for some reason but is used to this.) It’s not like events haven’t had details that allude to main story spoilers either. For example, College Gear Ortho has appeared in multiple events such as Fairy Gala: If and White Rabbit Fest, even though technically it is a spoiler for book 6.
bdbdbsejhfiekd I don’t know 😭 I just feel like this would have been so interesting to see more of Sunset Savanna reacting to the supposed scorned second prince… It’s sad we missed out on it.
P.S. The fact that we don’t see the public extensively react to him in a negative way makes me wonder if that negativity is the result of Leona’s own perspective twisting or exaggerating the truth. This is something I’ve already speculated on here.

Long post/rant ahead:
Ever since the Hellaverse announcement, I’ve been thinking about people who think SpindleHorse “sold out” to Amazon.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Amazon is a monopoly of a mega-corporation run by a morally bankrupt billionaire. If you can buy things from elsewhere, I always recommend doing so. Support small businesses, local businesses, and creators.
Here’s where the ‘but’ comes in: I am in a position to where I understand why SpindleHorse may have signed on with Amazon…because Amazon is my publisher.
My book, and any books in the series that I may complete, are distributed only through Amazon booksellers or myself. And no, I’m not talking about me uploading a rough word file and slapping a picture on it and calling it a novel. I mean that I worked with my editing team and formatting team to decide which options to pursue, and Amazon’s KindleDirect was the best option for me for my debut, especially as a POC author with POC characters.
And here’s the rub about indie publishing vs. traditional: publishers like KindleDirect allow authors and creatives to keep full creative control of their work, how much it sells for, and what formats to offer it in. Nearly all of my indie published author friends publish through Kindle. Some go through Ingram, but only a few of the authors in my local community traditionally published their works through printing houses. Traditional publishers don’t often give an author any say unless the author makes a shit ton of money off of their book. If an author’s work doesn’t live up to the publishing house’s expectations on signing, they can remove your work from print entirely. I’ve seen this happen, an author I know well had her duology taken out of print because it didn’t “sell well” and she was only left with the copies she had on hand.
But with Amazon and Kindle, I have control over that. If I ever decide to remove my work from published platforms, I do so on my own terms. Another caveat is that with Kindle, I make 35%-60% profit off of each copy sold. That may not sound like a lot, but it needs to be known at how little authors normally get from book sales. The fact that I can make over half of what a paperback or ebook costs is massive. And I won’t lie, I am no bestseller. I am an indie author with a modest following of readers, but if I had gone traditional, I probably would have been dumped years ago.
And the worst part: my contract states I can only sell through Amazon, or through deals struck by me, the author. For example, a local cafe near me usually has my book in stock with a wide variety of other local authors in my state. And a few readers have gotten my book in libraries. This doesn’t breach my contract because me selling a book at an event or it being distributed by a library or small business isn’t a conflict of interest; because the book was purchased either by me or the reader, then the book is either offered for free or sold at a lower tag price. But if I went to say, Barnes & Noble to sell it at whatever they decided was suitable, then Amazon has every right to nix me from Kindle entirely, because it’s in my contract that another large, international bookseller can’t sell my work because then that bookseller gets all the profits. Not Amazon, and certainly not me.
I imagine it’s similar with Helluva Boss, and that is why it’s on Prime first, then can be posted to YouTube by SpindleHorse directly. It’s why there’s a waiting period. Amazon has to get their end of the deal first, then SpindleHorse can do as they please with it.
I don’t know the ins and outs of the animation business or television contracts, but with Amazon, I have found it’s almost better to be with the devil you know that lets you have a modicum of control and access to your own work. And as much as it sucks ass for this to be one of the few viable options out there aside from trying to get a larger publisher or studio to notice…I, and I’m sure Viv, would rather keep control over the integrity of what we put out there.
And if that makes people like her or me sell outs, then sure. I guess we did. But our creativity and works depend on that in order to be distributed to the public in the way we intend.
