The thing abt john winchester is that he is too complex for the majority of the spn fandom and for a good portion of the writers on the show too.

Because at his core john is about love over everything else. When he looks up at his sons (yes, up, the fact that they’re both taller than him>>>>>), there is love seeping achingly from every single pore of his being even as he abuses them, as he destroys their souls beyond belief. He does it all entirely out of love. And he is so, so wrong for it. A part of him knows it. But he wants to keep dean alive, and he wants to keep Sam pure. And he loves them so much. And he damages them so horribly. John Winchester is the foundation upon which they are both built, they only become more of what he made them as the series goes on. Sam stops fighting it, Dean continues to mold into his image no matter how hard he tries to fight it.

Hell puts them both on steroids, but their individual trauma responses that influence this are the foundations that John built into them. No wonder azazel wanted sam to win so badly. John Winchester crafted his sons into alastair and Lucifer’s ideal victims, respectively, and dean was a better (worse) john than John ever was. John held out in hell. Dean acquiesced to his abuser despite all of his efforts to fight him, and he’s never been the same since.

Sam fought like hell, and he fought destiny, but at his core, he did what John always wanted him to by doing what dean wanted him to do, and then he stops fighting at all, loses the fire he showed john in adolescence that john immediately notices when he returns in s14.

And the sad thing is. They filled their roles so well that John is saddened by what they’ve become. He didn’t want dean to break. He didn’t want Sam to be dimmed. He’s sad to see what Sam is like in s14. In the process of recovering his wife, he ensured he would mold his sons into what he wanted them to be, and when he got what he wanted, he was devastated.

John Winchester is so driven by love and grief and he’s so filled to the brim with both that it’s painful to watch him on screen because he destroyed his family because of it. And he wanted this all along but he didn’t realize what he’d have to give up to get it.

Other than ASL, which characters do you like in One Piece? Whether it’s design, story role, personality etc.

I have SO many favorites in one piece it’s kind of difficult to choose lmao

Storytelling wise, outside of ASL and the main crew, I’ve really enjoyed Bonney and Law! Bonney especially with the recent arc in the manga :’) she’s so loved…….

(We don’t talk about Bonney’s canonical design. Or, at least, I won’t. Also whoops I forgot law’s other knuckle tats,,,, ignore that)

Otherwise I also really enjoy Robin (but I’ve drawn her already for another ask hehe) and Koala? But completely for story reasons. I would say there’s probably not a single female character in one piece whose design I fully enjoy just because at times I am convinced that Oda has never actually seen a woman before. But their stories are so incredibly compelling,,,,,,

Visual design wise I kind of enjoy Koby and Helmeppo and how they’ve changed over time! And I absolutely adore Jinbei and Brook and Chopper! Design wise I actually probably most enjoy brook and jinbei, and maybe post time skip zoro? I just think they’re really neat,,,

OH. AMD GEAR 5TH LUFFY. I CANNOT BELIEVE I ALMOST FORGOT GEAR 5TH LUFFY. that is just. Chefs kiss. EXCELLENT DESIGN

I think probably part of the reason I enjoy sabo so much is that he’s the only character design that just like. Fully appeals to me. Like I love his character design soooo much it is unreal. But also because he’s such a unique design among the characters (being about the only character with as much screentime as he has that dresses up as a noble) it’s difficult for me to find other characters that I enjoy so much visually. As reprehensible as nobles are in the story of one piece, I tend to especially enjoy characters that are more formally dressed,,,, honestly if they extended that sort of aesthetic to the entirety of the revolutionary army I would probably have a lot more favorite characters lmao

the episode of heartslabyul — the contradiction of cater diamond

Maybe it’s just me, but the manga adaptation does a great job of demonstrating how alone Cater is without explicitly drawing attention to it. A lot of the lines characters speak are directly carried over from the game, but the use of space and framing in various panels helps to convey a sense of emptiness. It’s purely visual storytelling, done and implying more without spelling it out with words.

Chapter 21 covers the period following Riddle’s Overblot; there’s lots of emphasis on reconciliation between the dorm leader and other characters: Riddle and Trey; Riddle and Yuuken, Riddle and Ace, etc. Then you also have interactions between Ace, Deuce, Yuuken, and Grim—just some good ol’ bickering between the main group of idiots 😂

For context, Cater suggests that Trey and the headmaster see Riddle to the infirmary (which explains their absence in the pages below). Then Cater says to himself that he’s thankful that Yuuken and co. stepped in to save their dorm leader, but is quick to deny that he said anything at all when asked about it. This also happens in the game, BUT LOOK AT HOW THAT SAME SCENE IS CONVEYED IN THE MANGA 😭

The “camera” pulls out to show the distance between Cater and the gang, which is actually a lot more than I thought it was when I saw the scene in the game. This distance shows us that he doesn’t feel like a part of their “group”, and neither does he feel like a part of the group that took Riddle to the infirmary earlier.

Trey and Riddle have the connection of being childhood friends, and Yuu is closer with Grim and Adeuce than they are to Cater. And yet, curiously, it was Cater himself who told Trey to go with Riddle rather than stay behind and help him clean up the aftermath of the OB attack. But despite staying behind with Yuuken and co., Cater doesn’t seem to make an effort to join in their banter when Grim eats the OB stone. Cater makes one passing comment, but for the most part he just… watches. He doesn’t get actively involved with the group, unlike Ace and Deuce who continue to loudly freak out over Grim putting things in his mouth.

Not only that, but look at how we, the audience, are seeing Cater—from the back, his face away from us, not unlike this pose from chapter 7 (after Cater throws Yuuken and co. out using his clones):

Cater’s dispersed of all his clones, turning them into a storm of playing cards. He stands alone in a garden of roses, having sent the freshmen out of Heartslabyul. Here, Cater is literally pushing people away for the purposes of the plot, but it still lines up thematically with metaphorically distancing himself from others, just as he mimics this pose in chapter 21.

Interestingly, Cater apologizes to Yuuken and co. before ejecting them. It’s nothing personal, it’s just the rules set by the dorm. Extrapolating this to chapter 21, Cater pushing everyone away from him isn’t personal or specifically discriminatory to Yuuken/Ace/Deuce/Grim either—it is Cater that is having trouble accepting others into his life, because he has yet to come to terms with himself.

What’s a little different between Cater in 7 vs 21 is that though we, the readers, are viewing Cater from the back both times, the other characters actually see him differently in 7 vs 21. In the former, the “camera” seems to imply that Cater’s back it TO Yuuken, Ace, and Deuce. He is dismissing them, telling them “bye-bye”. Cater is acting much colder towards them, even though he wears a smile as he’s banishing them from his sight. However, in chapter 21, Cater is FACING the freshmen. It’s a small but subtle difference in framing—and it indicates that, no matter how little of an improvement it may be, Cater is slowly warming up to them.

This is the contradiction of Cater Diamond, a tale told to us via visual storytelling: he wants to have deep and meaningful friendships, but stops short of putting forth the effort to obtain them. Cater mentions wishing he had a childhood friend like Trey on a few occasions. Cater implies how lonely he was as a child, never staying in one place for long enough to make any real connections. Yet Cater is seemingly ashamed of his loneliness, hiding it under a sparkly guise and clever acting. He denies his true self to his peers (Labwear vignettes) and letting embarrassment peek through when people are able to pick up on his lies (ie Trey pointing out Cater doesn’t like sweets). He won’t let himself be vulnerable to others, and he’s too scared to reach out to them himself—but surely he is capable of changing, of finally facing others.

It’s amazing that things like this are capable of being conveyed without words 😭

it's a website full of creepy and unnerving stories-- i used to have the anthology of them all in bound form, some of them are genuinely terrifying. they're in order from most recent to oldest, so i linked page 22 of the archive for ease of reading. here's a list of my favorites, to start you off:

- Fairy Cakes [all horror is insinuated through noise and absence of evidence afterwards]

- The Cake Made Out of Teeth [body horror, uh. cannibalism, maybe? you'll see.]

- The Tin Man's Price [not so much scary as unsettling, unlikely to keep you up at night]

- Dark Valentine [child death, and everything that comes with it. this one kept me up at night, it's simple and devastatingly effective.]

That's right y'all, after like 5+++ years of using the previous theme haha. Honestly, the old one was lovely and I really liked it, but after 5 years of Tumblr changes, it just wasn't keeping up with the times anymore. Therefore, I decided to make this new one while pretending that midterms and research responsibilities don't exist bc priorities  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The new layout also uses zero jQuery throughout the entire blog (yes, I redid the Isotope filtering to get rid of it too!) in an effort to reduce loading times.

On Christmas Eve, Ebeneezer Scrooge fell asleep in the server farm of his Cryptocurrency mine. In the background, the soft wash of LED displays and gentle hum of cooling fans filled the basement. He'd recently expanded his operation, having gotten a great deal on hardware in the Cyber Monday sales. So he was sung to sleep by the gentle guzzling of electricity and the slow accumulation of what might (by some) be considered wealth. Throughout the long night, he was visited by three ghosts. The whole business played out more or less as you'd expect, so we won't overly dwell on it here. Where things really started to go FUBAR was when Scrooge awoke… Looking out the security cameras on the snowy morning, Scrooge spied an urchin child. He pressed the buzzer on the speaker and cried out to them! "You, boy! What day is it?" "What? I can't hear you." "Hold on, I'll come upstairs!" Scrooge ran up the dingy stairwell of his minimalist and kinda grungy compound, stopping only to disarm his top of the line security system. He stepped out into the brisk winter, and very nearly forgot to reset the alarm in his excitement. Then he remembered he had prime numbers in there, damn it! So he did reset the primary alarm, but didn't bother with the non-lethal countermeasures, and that was something at least. "Thanks for waiting!" He huffed. "So, boy … what day is it?" "Not a boy!" Came the shrill reply. "Girl, then! What day is it?" "Not that either!" "Look, kid, this isn't a game of what's your fucking gender. Just tell me what day it is!" "It's solstice day, sir!" Said the urchin, looking up at a dishevelled Scrooge with their big urchin eyes. "Wait, really? …You're sure it's not Christmas? I fell asleep on Christmas Eve…" "I guess you slept for near a year, then, ‘cos I celebrate solstice and it's the gods-damned solstice." “I don’t know how to process that!” Cried Scrooge. “Maybe there’s a specific detail you can focus on to ground you?” Suggested the urchin, in a surprisingly helpful bit of trauma advice. “OH!” Exclaimed Scrooge. “Tell me, child, the butcher’s nearby. Does it still have that big turkey in the window?” “The butcher’s closed down six months back, I’m afraid! But I think there’s an Amazon Fresh around here somewhere?” Said the urchin. “That’ll do!” Scrooge rummaged around in his pockets. “Here, take this printout of a Jpeg of a poorly drawn frog and go buy me the biggest turkey you can find in Amazon Fresh. Then deliver it to Bob Cratchet!” “Even Amazon won’t take your NFT bullshit as currency, mister!” “Okay - I can give you cash.” Scrooge paused for a moment. “Do you have Venmo?” “I’m a street urchin.” Replied the street urchin. “Of course I have Venmo.” “Great. I’ll transfer you now - keep the change.” “I don’t mean to look a gift crypto bro in the mouth, sir, but aren’t you famously stingy? Like, your name’s literally a synonym for tight-fisted penny-pinching.” “That’s the old Scrooge. I got visited by three ghosts last night and now I’m a new man.” Said Scrooge, proudly, before added conspiratorially, “At first, I thought I’d just drank a bad batch of Soylent. But they were pretty convincing in the end.” “So you’re going to donate all your money to charity or start a non-profit or something?” The urchin said with open-mouthed awe. "I don't know. It's kind of ambiguous. I might do those things, or maybe I'll keep being rich and be a bit nicer? "Okay, so now you're closer to a Bill Gates rather than full Musk/Bezos on the scale of evil billionaires.” The urchin looked directly into the camera for a full three seconds. “And we’re supposed to celebrate that? “Look, it was pretty fucking radical for its time, okay?” Said Scrooge, snapping his fingers to stop the urchin breaking the fourth wall any further. “Are you gonna buy the turkey or what?" “I dunno, man. On the one hand, it feels like if you really changed your tune, you’d do more than buy one turkey for the single poor person whose name you know. On the other hand, you said I could keep the change. So this really is a bind for me…” “If I’m honest,” Said Scrooge, “I really didn’t think it would be this difficult to be charitable. No wonder Elon is the way he is.” “Sigh.” Said the urchin. Saying the word out loud, rather than just sighing, which I think tells you something about the level of frustration here. “You know what, this isn’t gonna work.” “Huh?” Said Scrooge, somewhat nonplussed. “Spot! Here, boys! Heel!” Called the urchin. In the distance, a low rumbling growl could be heard. Out of the shadows of the misty winter morning, a giant three-headed hound emerged, its jaws snapping at Scrooge in triplicate. “AAAARGH!” Yelled Scrooge, now so nonplussed as to be minused. The urchin pulled out a matte black flip phone, decorated with a few tasteful flowers, and made a call. “Hi Persephone, it’s me, Charon.” Said the urchin. “Yeah, I’m up here on psychopomp duty. Yup, it’s the Ebeneezer Scrooge case - y’know, the tech bro who drank too much Red Bull and had a heart attack? Well, we gave him another shot this year, but he’s still a bit of a dickmagnet. He’s made some progress - he understands basic empathy - but we’re still a bit stuck on the ‘myth of the benevolent billionaire’ stage.” In the background, the sound of screaming tech-bro and snarling monster dogs was fading into the distance. “I think we’re gonna call it for the day and give it another try solstice.” Charon continued. “Yeah, Cerberus is dragging him back to the underworld now. Yeah - he did a great job as the three ghosts too - definitely earned a treat. Cool - see you in a few.” Charon flipped the phone closed and took a deep breath. They took a pair of bronze coins out of a pocket of their ragged hoody, and placed them gently over their own eyes. “Hades bless us. Everyone.” They said to no-one, then disappeared.

The zero-waste shop is closed on Sundays and Mondays, so on Saturdays I have to make sure to buy plenty of vegetables, but today I have an additional plan. I dig my little cloth bread bag from the kitchen drawer, because maybe, just maybe, there'll be some vegan croissants left. They have them sometimes, but often I'm too late.

I see the sign before I've even parked. "Vegan pastries" and an invitational arrow inside. I quickly lock my bicycle and rush inside.

"Are there any vegan pastries left?" I ask, and when they assure me there are still a few, I pull out my little bag and add, "You're not going to believe this."

As I carefully pick out my preferred pastries - one croissant, one chocolate roll, and one cream-filled pastry covered with chocolate - I chat to the cashier about the lack of pastries not involving animal exploitation and suffering.

"It's the one thing I really miss," I tell her. "I hate that I can't just walk into the bakery or the grocery store and buy vegan croissants."

"Same," she says. "We've been noticing an increase in demand, so we have them twice a week now, and more than we used to!"

Saw somewhere on your blog that you watch house of the dragon (or were thinking about it? I can't remember 😂) and was wondering if you'd ever thought about writing for it? No demands from me obviously, just a curiosity because you write morally grey, nuanced characters with such skill and passion it makes me like them even more. I never really thought much of corinthian before tibyim!! You made me fall in love with him. Would love to see your take on the Targaryens because all of them are awful lol

I haven’t watched it yet, but have been sort of pseudo watching it though my dash since I’m familiar with the story already. I wasn’t sold on starting it for multiple reasons, and the last two eps have left me a bit hmmm, but I might watch it closer to S2 premier. Fun fact: Aegon I, Visenya, Rhaenys, Daemon & Brynden Rivers aka baddest bitch of them all the Bloodraven are my favourite Targaryens, and have been even before the show came out. Suffice to say I love this messy family and their endless dramas. So yes, I thought about writing them (Daemon and Aemond in particular) because the Dance is one of my favourite stories in this universe. Oh, the hubris of it all. Delicious. They’re all horrible and in terms of the Dance itself, I see a lot of fans being up in arms like You have to be Team Black or Green!!! and subsequent hate and superiority about certain characters which is honestly just tiring to see because they’re all war criminals. People need to stop putting characters on pedestals because why not both? They’re all awful. You don’t win morality points with anyone, and if that’s your view, then you’re missing the point of the entire conflict.

Will I write for them? Likely. Because I did have several ideas about this story. For one, you’ve seen me write good aligned readers, but OGs who’ve been around will know I love writing RIs and OCs that are straight up dark if not evil. So if I ever touched HoTD it would likely be someone very different to, say, Wanderer in tibyim. But not until S2 (and that’s assuming I have the time then) because I currently have 4 major projects on hand: work (itbmw), original novel (ase, and my NaNo project that will eat all of November), coa (currently on hold until either ase is done or jw4 comes out), and tibyim (which will be finished this week).
