I'm falling back into X-men: First Class stuff again thanks to the Deadpool x Wolverine movie and I had kind of forgotten how much I love the very specific dynamic of the Erik x Charles relationship where I watch Erik do some borderline supervillain stuff going "fuck yeah! Good for you!" and then watch Charles ream into Erik calling him out for said behaviour and/or the shit Erik has done to him personally going "fuck yeah! Good for you!"

Original X-men movie dynamics is much more the (normal) dynamic of wanting them to set aside their differences and find a way to progress their cause together. But First Class is all about the anger behind their actions being completely justified but also oh so very entertainingly messy.

There’s something about Roy hiding the champagne bottles behind his back when he and Keeley walk into the treatment room only so that he can pull them out with a big dramatic gesture and go “and fucking celebrate!” that’s just so… well, it’s low-key fucking adorable, actually. Such a tiny thing, but him even thinking to do that, him being playful and wanting to make it as much of a treat and surprise and occasion as possible for Jamie… Mm, yeah. Does things to me.

I think it was really important specifically for Dee to kiss Yak when he did. Because now, no matter what happens in the future between him and Yak, no matter what pain could come, Dee can look back on his first kiss without regrets. Because that was a kiss made of love. It was made entirely of love for Yak. For who Yak is. For the bond they have. For their friendship. For their relationship. For them. Dee will always be able to look back on his first kiss and know that he got exactly what he wanted from it. He got to keep his silly notion of the perfect first kiss. He got to willingly give his kiss away to someone who he loved that needed it. Every single type of love went into that kiss and now Dee can finally, finally let himself breathe.

I'm wondering - there's a lot of talk about aphantasia lately.

To it's hard to imagine the opposite, as in being able to 'see' images in your head. It must be an exaggeration?

But then I think about the fact that when I read fanfiction and the dialogues are good at following characters' speech patterns I can hear their voices in my head very clearly. And now I'm wondering if it is in any way connected to aphantasia or lack thereof.

This isn't scientific research, just a tumblr poll so don't sweat it too much. I'll let you decide what 'clearly' means to you in this context cause it's hard to measure that objectively. Personally, I think that if you're able to see a full image with different details and you don't need to 'focus in' on a specific element of the picture to come up with what it looks like, it counts.

Artists who admit to not knowing small details about their characters and worldbuilding have inadvertently given better advice than any character design post on social media tbh. as fun as it is to come up with what your guys would order from a restaurant or the contents of their backpack or their favorite color I've run into very few people who can leave that stuff in a story (or even leave it offscreen as paratext) without it being distracting and poorly written because it's rarely in service of the narrative. a lot of that is def just down to personal taste, but it feels more like designing characters for a TTRPG
