Corona-induced transition from molecular to particle motion in biological media
In last month’s post [see ‘Nanoparticle motion through heterogeneous hydrogels’ on November 6th, 2024], I described our recent work on tracking nanoparticles through a model of the vitreous humour and mentioned it was the first of two articles published in the Nature journal, Scientific Reports. In the second article, we explored the use of caustics in an optical microscope [see ‘Seeing the…

*sigh* thoughts on Nintendo's botw/totk timeline shenanigans and tomfoolery?
tbh. my maybe-unpopular opinion is that the timeline is only important when a game's place on the timeline seriously informs the way their narrative progresses. the problem is that before botw we almost NEVER got games where it didn't matter. it matters for skyward sword because it's the beginning, and it matters for tp/ww/alttp (and their respective sequels) because the choices the hero of time makes explicitly inform the narrative of those games in one way or another. it matters which timeline we're in for those games because these cycles we're seeing are close enough to oot's cycle that they're still feeling the effects of his choices. botw, however, takes place at minimum 10 thousand years after oot, so its place on the timeline actually functionally means nothing. botw is completely divorced from the hero of time & his story, so what he does is a nonissue in the context of botw link and zelda's story. thus, which timeline botw happens in is a nonissue. honestly I kind of liked the idea that it happened in all of them. i think there's a cool idea of inevitability that can be played with there. but the point is that the timeline exists to enhance and fill in the lore of games that need it, and botw/totk don't really need it because the devs finally realized they could make a game without the hero of time in it.
#i really do have a love-hate relationship with this timeline#because it's FASCINATING lore. genuinely. and i think it carries over the themes of certain games REALLY well#but i also think it's indicative of a trend in loz's writing that has REALLY annoyed me for a long time#which is this intense need to cling to oot#and on a certain level i get it. that was your most successful game probably ever. and it was an AMAZING game.#and i think there's definitely some corporate profit maximization tied up in this too--oot was an insane commercial success therefore you'r#not allowed to make new games we need you to just remake oot forever and ever#and that really annoys me because it makes certain games feel disjointed at best and barely-coherent at worst.#i think the best zelda games on the market are the ones where the devs were allowed to really push what they were working with#oot. majora. botw. hell i'd even put minish cap in there#these are games that don't quite follow what was the standard zelda gameplay at their time of release. they were experimental in some way#whether that be with graphics or puzzle mechanics or open-world or the gameplay premise in its entirety. there's something NEW there#and because the devs of those games were given that level of freedom the gameplay really enforces the narrative. everything feels complete#and designed to work together. as opposed to gameplay that feels disjointed or fights against story beats. you know??#so I think that the willingness to allow botw and totk to exist independently from the timeline is good at the very least from a developmen#standpoint because it implies a willingness to. stop making shitty oot remakes and let developers do something interesting.#and yes i do very much fear that the next 20 years of zelda will be shitty BOTW remakes now#in which botw link appears and undergoes the most insane character assassination youve ever seen in your life#but im trying to be optimistic here. if botw/totk can exist outside the timeline then we may no longer be stuck in the remake death loop#and i'm taking eow as a good sign (so far) that we're out of the death loop!! because that game looks NOTHING like botw or oot.#fingers crossed!!#anyway sorry for the game dev rant but tldr timeline good except when it's bad#asks#zelda analysis

Hello! I love your blog so muuch! Wanted to ask, when did you start drawing Anthy so much and how did you decide to start running this account (to all of our blessing btw)?
oh ! ahaha thank u thank u im glad u enjoy my anthys ! umm ... march 2023 ? i think ? is when i started anthyposting. i started bc i was talking to my friend 🪼 i think this is around the time i forced them and another one of our friends to watch RGU with me and they said something like "im surprised you've never posted any RGU arts" i guess in regards to how impassioned i am about it and all ... and i realised ... wait. yeah. that is weird ! huh also i think my hyperfixation was peak n i was checking the anthy tag incessantly and i was too impatient waiting for new anthy arts and ykno ... if u want more of something in the world people say u could always endeavor to add to it ... so i was drawing anthy to distract myself waiting for other people's anthys lol . but then i got annoyed seeing my own art in the tag whnever i posted closely in succession like im sick of this dude i want to see OTHER ANTHY ARTS 💀 sidenote i feel bad for my friends i held hostage to watch for their first time because looking back on it i was way too excited and bad at keeping spoilers in ..... i was so annoying saying thing like "oh THIS episode" "ssshhhshsh somethings abt to happen" "wait this is my favourite part" "ok pay attention to this bc itll be important later" 765ut47534234 times about like ... (trying to think of an inconsequential detail in the show for this hyperbole but cant bc everything in utena serves a narrative purpose) actually nevermind. anyway
#✉️#it was also meant to be a style experimentation blog but now its just a coping mechanism lmao#idk if this was the type of answer u were looking for but it basically boils down to i wanted more anthy art 🫰🏼💜 yayyy

and another thing. we as a fandom are sleeping on the Stealth OT3 (looks like a 2-person ship from the outside but one participant is secretly actually two people)
#'as a fandom' which fandom? yes#been thinking abt drift compatibility again. & possession. & Greedling. & Cyrano de Bergerac (of course)#(me thinking abt Cyrano de Bergerac is a universal constant at this point. btw.)#I'm appreciating the weirdness in who people in ships are to each other and/or who they are as people. but it's not enough#we need to get weirder. we need to greeble the mechanics of shipping itself#where is enemies AS friends AS lovers. where is setting as character in ship. where is hunting the narrative. where is the elusive OT4.5#we have GOT to get experimental w it we cannot let the '60s have all the fun!!!#or maybe I just need to read some papers on superpositions & get this out of my system. whatevarrr#fandom#ships on the horizon#dynamics

once again insane about udad mechs, i just think that marius and raph would team up for some good ol human experimentation on dubiously dead folks, then chop up the bodies and take em to the acheron, brains for hades, all the good fleshy bits for cerberus, and for some reason persephone keeps requesting the bones

Cosmic Genesis: How Black Holes Might Be Giving Birth to New Universes
The human quest for understanding the universe has led to numerous groundbreaking discoveries, each weaving a more intricate tapestry of our cosmic landscape. A recent theoretical framework, pioneered by Professor Nikodem Poplawski, proposes a revolutionary concept: every black hole creates a new, growing universe inside its event horizon. This idea, rooted in the Einstein-Cartan Theory, introduces torsion to the fabric of spacetime, avoiding gravitational singularities and transforming our understanding of black holes and the multiverse.
By incorporating torsion, the theory predicts that matter within a black hole, instead of collapsing into a singularity, reaches a “big bounce” and then expands into a new, closed universe. This challenges our current understanding of the cosmos, suggesting that our universe is a vast, cosmic nursery, giving birth to billions of “baby universes” through black holes. Each black hole, once thought to be a region of spacetime from which nothing can escape, now becomes a gateway to a new, unobservable universe, raising fundamental questions about the nature of reality and our place within the multiverse.
The introduction of torsion also has far-reaching implications for the long-standing gap between general relativity and quantum mechanics. By violating the linearity of quantum mechanics, torsion favors the pilot-wave interpretation, where particles have definite positions, guided by a wave function. This non-linear aspect of torsion could provide a crucial link in the quantum gravity puzzle, enabling a more unified understanding of the universe, from the smallest subatomic particles to the vast expanse of cosmic structures.
While experimental verification of torsion poses significant challenges, it is not insurmountable. Future astronomical observations of the early universe, utilizing gravitational waves and neutrinos, may uncover the distinctive signature of torsion in the cosmic microwave background radiation. Additionally, cutting-edge particle physics experiments could reveal the extended sizes of elementary particles, predicted by the theory, or the effects of non-commutative momentum in high-energy collisions, providing a tantalizing prospect of empirical confirmation.
The profound implications of Poplawski’s theory, if confirmed, would revolutionize our understanding of black holes, transforming them from cosmic dead ends to gateways of creation. The multiverse, once a topic of speculative debate, would gain a theoretical foundation, with our universe being just one of many, interconnected through a web of black holes. This pursuit of knowledge, even if verification takes decades or centuries, embodies the spirit of scientific inquiry, driving us to push the boundaries of human understanding and illuminating the intricate, ever-unfolding tapestry of the cosmos.

Nanoparticle motion through heterogeneous hydrogels
Over the last couple of years, we have been transitioning a technique, which we developed for tracking the motion of nanoparticles using caustics [see ‘Slow moving nanoparticles‘ on December 13th 2017], from its initial use in exploring mechanics at the nanoscale to applications in nanobiology [See ‘Label-free real-time tracking of individual bacterium‘ on January 25th, 2023] where it has the…

who would win, Vanitas or Sephiroth?
Cackles
You know the worst part is I have already actively considered this. I was thinking about whether or not to add in the KH1 Sephiroth fight in LLM and ngl? Ngl.
I love when Vanitas gets his ass handed to him. I love when he underestimates his opponents. He is used to being the biggest shark in the universal waters, even if he isn't stupid.
So sure, he'll look at Sephiroth and that sizeable amount of Darkness and think "oh, a challenge". Then he'd fuck around and find out.
In the Coliseum setting where the whole point is... it's not supposed to be a fight to the death, he'd likely win by the skin of his teeth after a handful of attempts. And be bitter as hell about it, too.
In a less controlled setting? It's not that I think he doesn't have the power to take Sephiroth on, Keyblade Wielders obviously do if a fourteen year old newbie can. That said, I love when Vanitas just, loses solely due to expecting shit to be easy. He expects to overwhelm his targets.
Overconfidence would lead to Vanitas being a smear in the dirt in a one and done battle scenario. Given the chance to come back again and again, however? To take the fight seriously?
I'd give him 50/50 odds on winning.
#Keyblade Wielders are just built different#honestly it's not hard to compare and kind of liken them to being the KH equivalent of First Class Soldiers#just thanks to magic instead of brutal scientific experimentation#maybe a tiny bit of scientific experimentation- thanks Xehanort#kh mechanics to lore#vanitas [gestures]

I can hardly wait to hear compositions for hyperorgans this Friday in nostalgic Berlin during Aggregate Festival. Mechanical music has an extraordinarily long history, tracing back to antiquity, when instruments powered by the force of falling water were first invented. All forms of abstraction that compel me to ponder the zero point of language or melody are pure nourishment for my soul. Embracing the frameworks of cognitive linguistics, I embark on a journey beyond the human body, to the place where energy meets the mechanical form. Berlin, I’m arriving on Thursday!
