I could play one of the most beautiful well crafted video games on the planet and it will never be as appealing to me as one that kind of sucks shit but has soooo much potential

#merlin.txt #just finished cyberpunk #i feel like they could have done sooo much more with the concepts they had #the game showed us a bit of everything in the world but i dont think they explored any one topic enough #and they pulled a ton of punches. the ending did not feel like this big 'grab your allies and fuck the corpos' thing it shouldve been #it was mostly just tying up johnnys loose end. one big loop. which i fuck with; but it wasnt rlly anticapitalist at all in that sense #i have a bunch of other thoughts on johnny but ill save it #but god. the beginning (act 1 and the first bits of act 2) where just soooo fucking good #and it rlly felt like it was going to gear up into this huge thing instead of just being one last hurrah for rogue and johnny #AUUUGHH theres just So Much Potential. goddamn #imo i think the major thing is that at some point it stopped being v's story. it was everyone elses #he has Very little agency. which is interesting but man this guy deserves better #when it comes down to it the game Is really shallow. whenever there is any sincerity in themes its very centrist #the fact is you dont rlly meet many characters in game who are Truly working to take down corps except for johnny and he doesnt rlly count #and if there Are its usually played for irony and laughs (looking at kerry) or theyre flat out kind of awful.#judys story is probably the best of the companions bc shes actively trying to help sex workers and its played very positively #i also think two of the main themes (letting go of the past; what it means to die) are Majorly helped by some incredible emotional beats #and w/o some just Really Really good scenes and good repetition of lines and motifs its very tropey.#ok i wasnt going to write a full thing. but let me be clear: i fucking loved this game. i would not be writing so much if i did not love it #the sun ending was Still soooo vindicating. v is still kicking and that's all that matters to me #(it helps that v is a Great protag like one of the Best voiced rpg protags next to hawke da2)#(which is kind of a funny comparison since i think both protags suffer from a lack of agency)#ok im done now

i get why everyone wants to moralize the gl corps into space explorers but realistically it’s still just going to be the same level of “progressiveness” as before. like park rangers: the green lantern edition is still going the have the common tropes where they head to an alien planet → meet the local population → inevitably get mixed up in a problem → superheroes function as superheroes do → oh wait, this is a cop allegory again! i mean cmon wtf are they going to do in space if they’re not going to fight ppl. none of them know jackshit about galactic wildlife they’re getting poisoned if they try to repopulate an endangered species or some shit like that 😭😭

#i really like the idea of post-parallax gls being made up of independent vigilantes who found rings and started to make it work for them #and maybe some bitter old guards make up the gl corps again but its nothing compared to the galaxy at large #like kyle is exploring the galaxy like he did at the end of gl1990 #hal is operating as spectre or as he did in renegade where he's kind of just an intergalactic fugitive with a homemade osha violation ring #guy runs his bar on earth but keeps getting roped into wacky adventures. def has a reputation of being a criminal b/c of lobo and gnort.#and john is the jla lantern who spends most of his time as an architect and volunteering in the community rather than going into space #idk id have to worldbuild it more but it is my perfect idealized world that does not exist godbless <3 #plus i just feel like you can tell more impactful stories where the context hasn't been changed but god knows that never happening again so #.thoughts #dc

90s run PAD has this rlly annoying trend where he very often write a female character being in love w miguel and suddenly her entire character shrinks down to the scope of what drama this provokes and it's near continually in service to the narratives of men (Gabriel and Miguel interpersonal drama for example). even when there are actually interesting things to be mined from this angle like w lyla its like. this is a pattern w you dude.

#my GOD we lost kasey nash in the wars skdfhjkdshfkjs #like. it sucked. the fact she goes from a revolutionary to primarily a wedge between gabri and miguel SUCKS.#for some reason its like folks pretend PAD also literally wasnt writing the kronom arc where character assasination is happening #left and right to prop up dana as a martry. when like he was literally just writing that.#like im sorry i love the 90s run too and i have a lot of sympathy for the strain the team wouldve been under while corp bullshit was #exploding above their heads but like. the fact PAD appears to like. just not be fucking bothered to explain what #danas thought processes are flipping from one belief to a wildly opposing one is just bad and tbh LAZY writing #and this is happening dozens of issues before the worst irl circumstances for the team even cropped up #tunes talks critical #can u tell im on my period lmao #tunes talks 2099 #like even regarding xina. i think she escapes the worst of this writing treatment from PAD but like. the fact that the dimension PRIMARILY #explored in the text w her is around her relationship w miguel is honestly really disappointing. i LIKE that dimension yes but there is so #much more to explore with her! does she have friends outside of miguel (and if not does this tie into her apparent isolation from alchemax)#how does xina operate as a relatively independant and implied self employed individual in this world of corp monopolies #she CARES about the truth and fighting back against false narratives spun to consolidate power and profit so how does this extend into her #normal life? does she know about downtown when education wise this seems to be something utterly ommitted? what does she think about it?#what kind of hope did she hold regarding angela's work?#if she believes miguel to still work at alchemax why is this not a point of conflict between them? does she fear losing him? did she give #up trying? etc etc etc there are SO many compelling dimensions to explore w her and the text keeps them #largely sublimated to background details in the art. or what we can interpret as sublimated conflicts the characters dont want to address #but in terms of what is in the TEXT i want more. i want more as someone who really loves this fucking thing lmao

You ever see just the one worst fucking responses to a show being forced to wrap up early and rush it’s ending because it was cancelled.

#ramblings #saw someone upset with the way one of the last few episodes of ToH went #and you know who it’s a thing you’ve just kind of have to acknowledge and accept that a show ending #is always going to feel a bit rushed and leave some loose ends when it gets cancelled suddenly #because the writers aren’t getting the chance to elaborate and explore a lot of the plot points they had already set up #and go into ones they were intending to that would have made it a better story #someone’s response to ‘it was cancelled early it’s not the writers fault’ was and I quote #‘it’s unfortunate yes but working with the time constraints is still the responsibility of the writers’#like that’s still a shitty thing to say about writers for a cancelled show who were still trying to give a satisfactory ending #anytime else but while the first writers strike in a over decade is going on #my guy you just sound like another jackass who thinks the writers for ‘owe’ you a ending you found personally satisfying #actually where’s that post about how networks/corps know they can rely on people like this to go after the people who make their shows #rather than the network/corporation who the blame rightfully lies with for fucking up a perfectly good show #don’t mind me just being salty about the casual disrespect for artists and the working conditions they’re often forced to create in
