Turnabout Titles

Got curious about how often people applied the “Turnabout” naming scheme to their AA fics, so I crunched a bunch of numbers on AA fics across Ao3 and FFN to find out (and also maybe got a bit carried away looking for patterns…)

What I found:

Overall, about 4% of AA fics on Ao3 and 13% of AA fics on FFN include “Turnabout” in the title

Longer fics were more likely to have “Turnabout” in the title than were shorter ones, with about 14% of 30k+ AA fics on Ao3 featuring it in the title, compared to only about 2% of sub-1k AA fics

“Turnabout” fics were disproportionately likely to be crossovers—about 19% of AA fics with “Turnabout” in the title were crossovers, compared to 5% of AA fics overall

Method: For the Ao3 numbers, I searched for fics in the “逆転裁判 | Gyakuten Saiban | Ace Attorney” fandom, limiting the results to English-language fics only and excluding restricted works (although at a glance, the same patterns appear to hold among restricted works). For the FFN numbers, I searched for fics in the “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney” fandom, filtered to English language only. Data collected 5/25/2024.

I was wondering what you have to say on the Dislyte espers. I imagine you wouldn't be so hot on them, but at least they have the excuse of only being random individuals empowered by mythical figures as opposed to actually being said figures. I honestly still prefer their Odin design to Doi's version for its sheer absurdity.

The Lord has hardened my heart against all Gacha and GaaS bullshit, and the intersection of myth with those forms is just a huge no-sell for me.

But yeah, it's not doing anything for me. I don't expect a lot of rough edges from something this calculating, but this style has always struck me as pretty sterile, for all its surface vibrancy. Something like Hades worked the intervention of art-deco Instagram thirst-trap bullshit into a frame of original cultural iconography to much better effect, I think.

Like, the idea is that you’re supposed to want to fuck these characters enough that you’ll keep pouring money into the video poker apparatus, so everyone is blandly fuckable but not in a way that might express an idiosyncrasy incompatible with the App Store TOS. I don't know, I guess I like this 'Isis' design. These are basically inoffensive. Looks like they constrained themselves to the 'dead' religions, so it's all Greek/Norse/Egyptian etc. Probably for the best if the idea is to avoid a Smite-style fiasco. Lakshmi has her ass all the way out... and you can make her floss!!! Things of that nature.

The stormy night before the mission, after they've just had their last round of mind-blowing reunion sex and Bradley is sleeping soundly against his chest — Jake tells him a story. 

He never talks about where he grew up, about his childhood. He still doesn't, but he shares a tiny piece of himself with a sleeping Bradley, who can't judge him for it.

“My mother’s name was Susie Wind, before she married my father and became a Seresin.” He pauses, biting his lip, because that isn't fair — not to her, not really. “My mother’s name was Beswewe, it means Echo Maker. When she was a baby, as I've been told, she used to mimic the sounds of the sandhill cranes that nested on the lake they lived beside. My grandparents were already elders when they had her, their little miracle. She was born on Gaa-waabaabiganikaag, the White Earth reservation, and my father took her away from them. She thought she loved him, but she was just a girl. By the time she realized the monster he was — there was me.” 

Bradley snuffles in his sleep, squirming closer, as if the pitter-patter of Jake’s tears on the sheets is enough to disturb him. “My grandfather named me, you know. He left the rez one night after I was born, the night of a really bad storm, and he used it as cover to sneak up to our shed. My mother was waiting there, wet and wild in the darkness, certain that my father would be close behind her and she hurriedly gave my grandfather the tobacco he needed to name me. Baashkikwa’am, it means He Who Brings Thunder.” 

The storm outside rages on, not unlike the storm that brought him into the world, and Jake smiles, wobbly and tearful. “When my mother was dying, she told me a story and it means that I'm going to ask you for a favor. I don't expect you to remember any of this, Bradshaw, but I’ll leave a note and if you love me, or if you ever did: bury me with moccasins on my feet. I have them… tucked into a box. I've had them since my first deployment. I need you to bury me as soon as possible in those, if I die tomorrow. So that when I walk through the lands of my ancestors, Gaagige Minawaanigozigiwining: the land of everlasting happiness, they will know my footprints. Then, you have to take the charcoal in the box and smudge it all over your face, so the death doesn't take you too. Sometimes, it gets confused.” 

Jake then curls his body around Bradley’s, dragging up the blankets to cocoon them both in the warmth for as long as he possibly can.

7) what’s the one thing the fandom gets wrong about your Blorbo?

I haven't interacted with the GAA fandom in a long time. The things that annoyed me the most were reducing Barok to his racism, as if he didn't go through an arc of growing past it and acknowledging the irrationality of his prejudices and as if he didn't have any other personality trait (like being a drama king in courtroom or being so meticulous with his wines that he won't even let his assistant touch them), and the general semefication/ukefication of Baroryuu. No, Barok isn't this sort of ultra stoic sex god. He's actually rather vulnerable and would most likely be repressed as hell. Getting him to be comfortable with Ryuu would take a lot of work, I think.

24) if you could change one canonical thing about your Blorbo, what would it be?

oh, easy. I'd change his explanation as to why he became racist.

I don't think the idea that he became japanophobic because Genshin killed Klint is wrong, but it's not as simple as "dude killed brother, now me racist" like presented in the story. Somewhere along the line, an important detail was forgotten: Barok was meant to represent the intrinsic racism of the British Empire that Ryuu was meant to challenge.

Long story short, it makes perfect sense that Barok would regress to hate the Japanese if 1) he, as a sheltered British nobleman, was taught to not trust the "Nipponese", as they are backwards and unscrutable, 2) he was proven right by Genshin (or so it appeared), 3) everyone around him also blamed the act on the Nipponese being inherently savage, maybe even lowkey implying that Barok and Klint were stupid to believe in the goodness of such a kind, and 4) he spent 5 years being ostracized and another 5 drinking himself into a stupor in his own manor. like yeah no wonder his thoughts would metastize into "those damned nipponese". But it's not as easy as the murder flipping a switch! The focus should have been more about the culture!

(while I'm at it, Ryuu should be a teensie more salty about the shit Barok flung at him. although I guess him constantly shittalking him in G2-3 could be enough of a punishment lol)

- Karamatsu: talks with a fake D4 accent, idolises Ross O’Carroll Kelly, wears chinos and brown brogues, drinks Bulmers

- Osomatsu: big Guinness fan naturally propping up the pub maybe like half doing a crossword and eating a pack of peanuts

not a concept i ever pondered myself but thinking about it so much now... influencer wannabe todoko doing hauls from dealz and home savers and mr price (cus she usually can't afford hauls from anywhere else) maybe getting to do one of those ads for swappie just once

in the same vein as choromatsu claiming to be a gaeilgeoir but not actually being able to speak it i imagine like. how karamatsu says random words in english to seem #worldly. he does that with irish instead or like deep cut irish slang/phrases that he would not have grown up with at all and gets them wrong half the time.

choromatsu is definitely in forbidden planet like weekly if not daily. goes in there and then brings whatever manga he bought to that clockwork door place up the road and hopes someone asks him what he's reading

struggling to decide who would be a bigger fiend for elfbars out of osomatsu and karamatsu so i'll just leave that thought there

i want one of them to be obsessed with mooju. i don't know which. all of them probably. especially osomatsu and jyushimatsu i think. they could get the strawberry and banana flavours to match their colours.. imagine.. i think ichimatsu likes the cookies and cream flavour but secretly

thinking about jyushimatsu so hard man like the rest probably stick to dublin/whatever suburb of it they live in just cus they seem the sort to not afford to live in the city centre LMAOOO not in a house with 6 adult kids..... but i know jyushimatsu does be getting on the bus/train every week and just disappearing off all over the country for funsies (he's the only one with an autism diagnosis so he's got that sweet sweet free travel card.) like you know how you get those dubliners that are fucking terrified to leave the county or even just the city because "scary culchies ewww boggers" or whatever. todomatsu is definitely one of those maybe choromatsu too (he pretends not to be scared but he is). osomatsu jokes but doesn't actually care. karamatsu pretends to be #cultured and not scared as well but the furthest he's been is like... skerries. nowhere further than the dart or dublin bus goes. ichimatsu is scared even just in dublin and thinks he's gonna get stabbed like all the time so it's all the same to him

BUT YEAH jyushimatsu goes literally everywhere cities towns parishes villages you name it. maybe brings ichimatsu along with him sometimes cus ichi does wanna go & i bet loves the countryside but is too scared by himself and needs someone to hide behind. jyushi goes to sooooo many GAA matches gaelic footballs ok but as you said MASSIVELY INTO HURLING!!!! one of those lads you see walking around with a hurl in hand nearly everywhere he goes.. got that o'neills mála scoile... i know you said he wears a kilkenny jersey a lot which is another INSPIRED idea but i feel in my heart that he has a galway one too just because he loves supermacs. they all love supermacs. i'm projecting now. also jyushi definitely tears up those greenways he'll do the royal canal one and then detour from mullingar to athlone and at the end still be like when are they gonna finish connecting this up to galway :/

Ace Attorney Animals on Ao3

Got curious which Ace Attorney animals (and robots/mascots/etc…) were featured in the most fics, so I grabbed some quick Ao3 tag data to investigate. Here’s a graph of what I found:

(The colors are based on fandom: AA = blue, GAA = brown, PLvPW = orange)

Method details below the cut

Data/method: I used the Ao3 tag search for the “逆転裁判 | Gyakuten Saiban | Ace Attorney”, “大逆転裁判 | Dai Gyakuten Saiban | The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (Video Games)”, and “Layton Kyouju vs Gyakuten Saiban | Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney” fandoms (one at a time), with the tag type set to “Character” and the wrangling status set to “Canonical”. I copy/pasted the tag counts from each page of results and ran that text through a simple python script to extract the relevant info. I collected the data on January 18th, 2025.

Note that this approach only captures instances of the characters being tagged, so fics that include a character without tagging them wouldn’t be counted here

Also, I thought it was worth mentioning that Moozilla/Taurusaurus, Sniper (the penguin), the Proto Badger, Pink Badger, and Bad Badger all have canonical tags that are currently unused. Very sad 😞
