One Dress a Day Challenge
August: Fantasy & Sci-Fi
Return to Oz / Jean Marsh as Mombi and Sophie Ward as Mombi II
I was lucky enough to grow up in a town whose library had a nearly complete collection of the Oz books, so of course I remembered Princess Langwidere and her collection of heads! It was great to see that onscreen, even though they merged the characters of Langwidere and Mombi.
In the book, she only wore a simple white dress, as changing her head gave her all the variety she wanted. But I think the burgundy-and-plum gown created for the movie by designer Raymond Hughes is gorgeous, with its iridescent patches and art nouveau swirls. A particularly interesting feature is the rack of golden splinters trailing back from the shoulders, almost like they're trying to form into fairy wings but aren't quite complete.

Alicent based on this post about Modest!Alicent by @dirtytransmasc
Details under the cut
-I was obsessed with the veiled pieces that OP mentioned and I loved the image of her in gold veils that looked like she was dripping in gold.
- The veils are based on Catholic veils (specifically and 4), medieval head coverings like ones worn in Ophelia 2018 and wimples (2 and 6), Star Wars (5), and the Tudor period (7). Most of them are sheer because one, I couldn’t figure out how to wrap them around her head without her looking like a blob of color and when it did look okay she looked like she was wearing a hijab and it felt too appropriative to draw on Alicent. This is also why her hair is visible in most of them but in practice she would cover them with thicker fabric.
- Alicent wears long billowing sleeves with heavy skirts. OP said that Alicent would wear dresses that conceal her figure which I tried to maintain but some have a shapelier silhouette as it looked better with my art style. I hope one day I will be able to draw modest clothing without making someone look like a blob but I’m not there yet.
- Dress 1 is inspired by the series Isabel 2011, which from what I’ve seen has some nice costumes. It also gave me a good base for something historical and modest but still luxurious.
- The second is based on Lady Macbeth and Ophelia in the Ophelia movie. I debated on adding braids but I think Alicent would’ve worn them. They’re neat, mature, and somewhat conservative hairstyle while also giving her an opportunity to wear more accessories which is expected of her as a queen. I know OP said modest but irl royalty had to wear extravagant clothes to prove their status and with the pressure of civil war and being the second wife, Alicent would certainly wear luxurious jewelry while staying simple compared to the rest of the Targaryens. The beads are Targ inspired as she would also need to embrace Valeryian styles to stay in Viserys’s favor.
- This side view of Alicent has the deepest neckline because that is what worked best for a side view. I also noticed Catholic veils tended to have patterns so I added simple gold flowers. The dress is medieval based.
- What sparked my artistic interest was OP’s descriptions of the veils so I had to do a dedicated work with a veil in the spotlight. In the original post, it was mentioned that Alicent would wear shawls with tapestry like designs. I couldn’t think of anything that would look good with fabric folds and creases but on a lace veil? I could definitely do that. Tbh it’s not my favorite design (Helaena’s was my favorite) but I think it represents Alicent’s loyalties pretty well. I’m personally pleased with how the dragons and tower came out.
- I don’t care about Star Wars but some of Padme’s outfits have screamed Alicent to me since the beginning. The golden lace veil with pearls is the centerpiece so her dress is much more toned down.
- This is again based on Ophelia’s costuming and on OP saying Alicent appears to be dripping in gold wearing golden veils. I added jewelry shaped like the Hightower sigil with green gems decorating it.
- OP mentioned shawls with tassels and patterns so I had to add them onto the last dress. Well, I had fur instead of tassels but the statement still stands. I also tried to make the veil based on Spanish mantillas but it never turned out correct so I kept it simple. The dress is a mix of Alexander McQueen Fall 2011 and the Tudors era.

DAY 6 : THE THREE DRAGONS OF THE DANCE.
Favourite Character Costumes
Predictably, hotd has gotten better from what we've seen with costume design. However unfortunately, we don't have a lot to go off of when it comes to Rhaena and Baela so, instead I decided to do different eras for their characters and my personal best outcome for inspiring the design.
BAELA TARGARYEN.
The end of the war and the Reconstruction of the house Targaryen. Princess Baela Targaryen stayed loyally at her brother's side in their kingdom, as Lady of Driftmark and Daughter of House Targaryen.

NETTLES THE DRAGONSEED
Nettles the Dragonseed spent her days in Maidenpool, ever at the side of the Rogue Prince. This came with certain privileges and freedoms, not even Sheepstealer had brought her. It also put her to a higher status, as his kept equal, making him inclined to dress her for the part.

Rhaena Targaryen
The last Dragon Rider of House Targaryen and Ward of House Arryn, Princess Rhaena, was poised, graceful, and successor to her Brother Kng Aegon III at the time of slim possibilities for her House. Married to be Rhaena Corbary, the girl became one of the last claims that House Targaryen was more God than Man.

Clothing concepts for my world/characters:
So I'm gonna talk a bit about costumes. I'm Obsessed with coming up with fashion ideas in my worlds, it's one of my favourite worldbuilding aspects. I have a TON of sketches and also a Pinterest board (which I'll link here), and I want to discuss not the super detailed stuff, but more so a few identifying characteristics that occur in my world's fashion.
Here we go!
Side fastenings
A lot of garments have asymmetrical cuts and fasten on the side of the body instead of straight down the front. This is a relic of the Dviric people's ancestry; their people came from the northeast, in a land that is now part of the Saldigan Empire. Royalty and nobility in that place and time often wore clothing like this. Often you'd see this in jumpers or long sleeveless tunics, and in cloaks.
Knitwear
This comes from the Idrinic people who already lived in our main region by the time the Dvirics arrived. Their knitting styles were really elaborate and complex, often weaving secondary patterns into an already decorated garment. They wore sweaters! And like. Long knitted tunics and dresses that were. Basically just long sweaters.
Neutral/earth tones
This is interesting, because the three major cultural groups of the area have different colour associations when it comes to clothing. The Idrinics wore a lot of soft blues, greys, and browns, while the Dvirics wore shades of forest green, yellow, gold, and warmer rusty browns. They also never wore red, as it was a popular royal colour where they first came from, and as a group of essentially rebels to the throne they didn't want to be associated with it.* The Gamilar invaders tend to be the most vibrantly dressed, in bright blues, greens, teal and aquamarine, and shades of red. Though because the populations have become less distinct and the cultures a lot more mixed (especially the first two) at the time of the book, there's a lot more overlap than there once was.
*many modern Dviric people will wear dark rusty reds or brownish maroons, however
Long coats
They just really like em. This started as mostly a Dviric thing, but now most people wear them. Traditionally they were more of a male-associated garment but a lot of contemporary women wear them too.
The Pinterest (hope the link works?? I've never linked a Pinterest board before so idk)

One Dress a Day Challenge
October: White Redux
The Court Jester / Angela Lansbury as Princess Gwendolyn
I'm pretty sure this is the dress that Gwendolyn is wearing under the blue and green robe/cloak that I featured in July--compare the cuffs. It's the most luxurious of all Gwendolyn's dresses, with the lavish gold trim and embroidery. It also reminds me of the gown worn by the lady in Edmund Leighton's painting The Accolade (see below)--enough that I wonder whether there is a deliberate reference. Especially since Gwendolyn wears this gown to a knighting ceremony, even though she doesn't get to do the actual "accolade" in the movie!

Modest Veiled Helaena based on this post by @dirtytransmasc
Details under the cut
- While Alicent consistently wears long veils, Heleana is more experimental with her veils. OP mentioned that the two bond by styling their veils so I can see her wearing a variety of styles and patterns. However, while they are different veils, they would match what Alicent would wear either through patterns, length, or color.
- This dress is something her mother would’ve picked out, if not straight up worn herself. The dress is based on medieval dresses but the sleeves are Italian Renaissance inspired. She would be able to changed the shape of her dress by adjusting the sleeves. I can see her playing with that or with her long fabric belt.
- Helaenas dragon riding outfit. I would have preferred Heleana style it more like this on her day to day as it seems like it would ‘quiet the loud world.’ However, I didn’t want to risk accidental appropriation. This ‘hooded veil’ also works as a good attempt to keep her hair tidied while flying but is loose enough where it could become messy or lost as OP mentioned in the post. This dress is based on Alicent’s tourney dress with the crossed bodice and on Rhaenerya’s dragon riding outfit because of course. The dress matches Dreamfyre’s scales.
- This is a hairstyle I saw on the Borgias where they sort of braided some veils into the hairstyle and it is something I can see Heleana and Alicent trying to perfect before a gala of some sort. Alicent likes it when her Targaryen silver hair is visible as a clear sign of her Targaryen roots so it’s a good combination of both. Dreamfyre is embroidered on the split sleeve of her dress.
- Once again, the I needed to dedicate on work to the veils. I like this more than the one I made for Alicent. Not much else to say about this one really.
- This one I can see as more directly inspired by her mother but with pastels and apple green tones instead of Alicent’s deeper green shades.
- Another Dreamfyre blue gown with a shorter lace veil this time. She is a Princess so she’s showing ladies of the court other ways to style a veil as it sways more people onto the Green team or at least visibly support them. I see her taking a lot of inspiration from her dragon for her everyday style. Blue is also a good variation for her wardrobe so she isn’t wearing green every single day. The opaque, billowing sleeves are inspired by her mother. I wanted to include some insects on this dress but unfortunately butterflies were too Y2K and spiders didn’t match. I do see her having ant shaped buttons down the center of her dress.
- The last dress has her in Targaryen pink. Viserys has a lot of Valyrian pride so he would want a family event wearing their house colors. She would somewhat obey him by wearing pink. The hairstyle and the dress shape with green and gold accessories however are all inspired by her mother.

Medieval Cirilla Dress
Day One
Tumblr media
I laid out my print out pattern and taped it together on my bed. Back pain level at 7/10.
Day Two
Tumblr media
I laid out everything to measure and revise my pattern.
Day Three
I forgot to take a picture of my tracing step. I didn't have a colored chalk; all there was, was pink chalk for a pink fabric. I ended up using a water soluble pencil, which was really just a blue crayon.
Tumblr media
I steam ironed for the first time. I realized I've never actually smelled fresh linen before, but I can see why it would be a popular candle scent.
Tumblr media
I sat down in the evening to read up on historical hand sewing techniques. I have Bernadette Banner's book, Make, Sew and Mend: Traditional Techniques to Sustainably Maintain and Refashion Your Clothes.

I love when they do pop culture references in fantasy costumes, and one I always wanted to see was a reference to Bjork's wedding dress,
Tumblr media
but the closest in world one I could think of is Game of Thrones and I don't trust that they wouldn't have found a way to brutalize the actress. I'm also 99% sure it would've been in Dorne or the Khalasar, and the last thing I needed was to see even more of how D and D felt the need to represent me in media.
