Whoever gets 50 votes automatically proceeds into the next round. There won't be only one winner for each poll!

We will do one category at the time. We'll start with books.

We'll decide on a winner of each category, and then whoever had the most votes, will proceed into the Final 10.

I'll calculate how many votes each woman got, so that at the end of the voting, you can see how many other women also adored your favourite ones :)

This also means that once you vote, if there's someone else you also want to see in the finals, you can reblog and let your followers know who already has enough votes, and who needs more in order to proceed. I'll also sometimes reblog polls announcing that a certain character has made the cut, and now others need your attention. He's from the fucking film 12 angry men. like, aside from letterbox bootlickers and middle school hass students NO ONE has watched this film let alone care about it, it was made in 1957, is shot almost exclusively in one room and the entire film is just middle aged white men yelling at each other over whether some not white poor kid should be sent to the electric chair. what the fuck.

Henry Fonda, the actor, was 52 years old at the time of filming

Henry Fonda is the father of Jane Fonda, the woman who would revolutionise the 80's with her home workouts and her blindingly neon leg warmers.

His name wasn't revealed until the very end of the film and even then it's just "Davis."

Dude, on ao3 there's more fanfiction about the real life 80's British punk band The Clash than the entire film of 12 angry men, let alone Davis (80 fics come up under the clash, while 10 come up for 12 angry men)

I have a counter, and I've watched 12 Angry men a total of 145 times. The figure is up on my wall in tallies. whenever the number goes up, I like to watch it in 5's so then I can put another full group of tallies on my wall.

I have incredibly detailed stories about how Davis would boogie down to ringo starr's solo career, and they're written within the margins of a book called Tobruk written by Peter Fitzsimons. The only reason I reread that book is to wonder at my elaborate works of fiction

My HASS teacher was the one to introduce me to 12 Angry Men as he played it for the entire class. He gave us a set of questions to complete on the film and a few Law based questions as a little treat, and he expected it to be handed in the next day. What he didn't expect was an 11 page monster of a response that included social commentary, 4 paragraphs dissecting the character of Davis alone, deeply discussed comparisons between the landscapes of politics and law in the 50's to the present, and basically an entire point-for-point summarisation of the film, completed with obscure quotes from Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon and Presley (Elvis). He presented the printed masterpiece in front of the entire class to shame me.

After class he explained how his favourite Juror would either be 6 or 5, because 6 seems like a big dumb teddybear and he just liked 5. I explained how I liked Davis because he didn't want to send a kid to die, then he told me how Davis would make a good cowboy (at this point in time I was unaware of Henry Fonda's role in Once Upon A Time in The West) and I proceeded to go home and write a 3 part orchestral composition that I could pretend would play as the soundtrack to Juror 8: A Cowboy's Tale or something like that

I had started to make an animation meme starring Davis but only gave up when photoshop literally deleted itself from my laptop

I didn't even hear that Juror 8's name was Davis when I first watched it in class, somehow I only heard it on my 6th rewatch but when I did I literally got so excited I literally got winded and cried a little bit, I had to take a panadol because I got so lightheaded

I have learned the musical motif that plays throughout the film on saxophone, clarinet, recorder, guitar, bass, ukulele, piano and trumpet

Welcome to the White-Haired Women Tournament!

As many of you know from my main blog, I get kind of unreasonably obsessed with fictional women who have white hair. So I'm doing this purely for self-indulgence.

Currently, there are fourteen contestants, and the matchups they're assigned are mostly random. That means I put them in the order I first thought of them when I was conceptualizing this poll. I realise that means there will be some unfair matchups! I don't care :)

Matchup polls will last one day and should be posted around midnight every other night, starting March 17th. Make sure to reblog if you want to see the contest grow or if you want to support a particular character!

I won't talk too much about sharon fans because they're so exhausting to talk to & they're always harassing people about extremely trivial things like shipping so I don't want them to get involved in our conversation. One time on twitter, there was a poll about ships involving tony stark & a sharon fan botted tonysharon & it won & they called people misogynists for being upset about it....I'm not sure if I feel sorry for them or if I'm very annoyed. I agree with what you said, though, they're one of my least favourite corners of the marvel fandom & they're terribly misogynistic towards other female characters, which makes their arguments less credible imo. And they really need to let go of mcu staron - it would be extremely gross if anything happened now (more than it already is thanks to endgame).

Yo-oh, A Pirate's life for me

Hello, hello!

So, earlier today I held a poll on Instagram, asking which one of my old ocs I should have drawn!

The results of the poll were very clear, and so, allow me to present you, my Pirate Queen, the very first badass OC I have ever created (but not my first first oc. That honour goes to the HP fandom, when I was 11) all freshened up and in colours too: Eleanor Josephine John Henry Morgan Silver!

I worked at the speed of light on this, so forgive the sloppiness, but I wanted it to be done before going to bed!

Now, keep in mind that this character was created when I was 14 years old, almost 20 years ago, I would probably revise some of the details of her background story. But back then, I just adored so much Henry Morgan AND Long John Silver that my brain just decided to mesh up reality and fiction, and have this young woman here descend from both!

She does have an interesting story, a solid conflict with father dearest, and she is an absolute mix of sass, fun and overall badassery. I would love to share it with you all sometimes, if you'd like to hear it!

I am still very proud of this oc, and still regard her as one of my most favourite among the one I have created, so, it was A JOY having the chance to actually draw her again today. I probably wouldn't have been prompted to do so, if it hadn't been for the poll, so I am extremely grateful that the people voted for her!!!

I am actually so happy to also include all the old sketches I did for her, so many years ago, because despite being not perfect, despite being sloppy, the memories connected to them are so sweet and so happy that I am just happy to have them in the open!

As you can see, they were all still on paper because I didn't have a drawing tablet back then, so traditional drawing was all I had to serve me and my imagination and bring her to life!!

Superstition Romance Poll Results

On June 23 2020, I opened up a romance poll about the interactive fiction game Superstition by @13leaguestories. I closed it on July 21 2020, so a good month later, and then compiled the results! There are a total of 189 answers. I was really happy to read all of the personal opinions people shared on the survey about the ROs, and am going to share some of them here. The results are under the cut! You'll find the results both in tables and described in text.

The Players' Gender

The first question asked was about the gender of the players. With 118 votes, the majority of people who answered the survey said they are female. 53 people said they are male, and 18 people answered non-binary.

Next I asked about the gender of the main Roe people usually play. A little bit more than half of the voters said they are playing female Roes, 95 votes. 77 people play male Roes, 8 people play non-binary Roes, then there are 6 people playing a trans-female Roe and 3 people playing a trans-male Roe. The gender of the player and their Roe does not have to be the same. There are female players who play non-binary or male Roes, same with male and non-binary players.

The most favourite RO

The most favourite romance so far (mid to end of Season 2) is without a doubt Sydero! 59 of 189 people voted for her as their favourite romance. In second place is Chris with 44 votes. Then comes Zillah with 39 votes, and Rahim with 31 votes. Amari is currently last with 15 votes to her name, which I'd mostly put on us not knowing her for long yet. Her low ranking might also be due to how I asked the questions.

Likely because of the higher number of romance options available to these Roes, the numbers are relatively balanced. Sydero got the most votes here with 16 votes. Chris has 15 votes, Rahim 12 votes, Zillah got 10 votes, and Amari got 4 votes as the most favourite RO in this category.

Second favourite romance for Roes interested in "both"

I only let people who are interested in either men or women choose *one* favourite romance option, and when put against Sydero, Amari so far simply draws the shorter stick. I allowed people who play Roes who are interested in both men and women to pick a second favourite romance option. There, Amari got another 16 votes in total, especially from people who chose Sydero as their most favourite romance. So it's not that she does not have any fans, but so far she is a bit overshadowed by other romance options. Everyone who chose that their Roe is interested in "both" could answer this question. This means there were a total of 57 answers. In this question, 16 people named Amari as their second favourite romance. 10 of these votes are by Sydero fans, another 4 by Chrismancers, and 2 by Rahimancers. No person romancing Zillah as their main named Amari as their second favourite. Zillah got a total of 13 votes here. 5 by Chrismancers, 4 votes by Rahimancers, 3 votes by Sydmancers, and 1 vote by an Amari romancer. Chris got 10 votes. 5 votes by people romancing Zillah as their main, 3 by Rahimancers, and 2 by Syderomancers. No votes by people who chose Amari as their favourite romance. Rahim got 9 votes. 3 of those are by Amarimancers, another 3 by Chrismancers, then 2 by Zillahmancers, and 1 vote by a Sydmancer. Last is Sydero, who got 6 votes as second favourite romance. 3 of these votes come from Zillahmancers, then 2 by Chrismancers, and 1 vote by a Rahimancer. There are 2 people who are only interested in Rahim, and 1 person only interested in Chris.

This question was about whether people romance a character with a high relationship (friendmancing) or a low relationship (rivalmancing). The dynamic of the relationship will change a bit depending on that in the long run. This question only considered the most favourite romance, not the second favourite romance some people could pick. This also does not say anything about whether players have a platonic rivalry or friendship with the other characters. In summary, there is an overwhelming majority of people who friendmance these characters. Out of the 59 people who votes for Sydero as their most favourite romance, 52 people chose friendmancing vs 7 rivalmancers.

I also let people vote for their Roe's current best friend. Out of all, Bradley got the most votes - 70 people voted for him to be their Roe's best friend. With a bit of a gap comes Chris with 46 votes, followed by Amari with 43 votes. Then there's another gap cause Sydero is in fourth place with only 17 votes. After her comes Zillah in second to last place with 10 votes, and Rahim only got 3 votes. Rahim doesn't quite make it easy to warm up to him.

The Forbidden Ones aka The Cursed Romances

Many people have expressed their desire to get to know various characters intimately, and I gave them the opportunity to vote for their biggest desires. This was an optional question, some skipped it. Furthermore, it was possible to select multiple answers in this one and add one additional answer. I won't make a bigger summary out of this and mostly only list the ranking below. But here's the top five: With 53 votes, the most people selected to call the entire question pure blasphemy and to rat me out to Tierra... I can tell you though that a good chunk of these people also selected other options additionally to this one. With 51 votes, the Italian suit wearing fallen angel Azrael is in second place. He only had a short amount of screentime, but his formal attire and mysterious nature must have enchanted a good amount of people. With 44 votes, the beautiful skeleton from the Superstition Season 2 itchio page is in third place! Who can possibly resist its wonderfully coloured bones? Close behind the skeleton is the Prince of Lust, Asmodeus with 42 votes. There is little more to say, he's *Lust* for goodness' sake. But Asmodeus is almost thrown off his place by the curveous Honda Civic with 41 votes. Such a breathtaking lineup!

A major thing we’ve been dealing with this past month is redirecting our design to be more inclusive, via accessibility. Great game design starts when these things are considered ahead of time, rather than as an afterthought.

Currently we are very much open to hearing about what we can do to make visual novels more accessible. We have some ideas and designs of our own for the future, which include mindful options over font choices, audio-related functions, and content warnings.

Main Game Progress

Coding is underway on the Primrose Path team! Our current focus is introducing the Ink scripting language into our current workflow, which we think will tie into our natural way of writing script while allowing for easier, lighter coding of varied branching narrative. If we succeed in the integrations we have planned, we think this will deepen the level of interactivity for the game overall. Which reminds us:

Primrose Path is very much still in the scripting department. We have a very thorough process, where we create a heavily detailed draft outline that covers the overall entire game. (It's currently a whopping 30,000 words, but this amount goes up and down as we fill in and delete what's transferred to the clean outline.) We then take this, revise, and transfer it to a 'clean' outline, which breaks down each scene on a beat by beat basis. Only then do we move onto script.

On that note, we're rather happy to say that the common route of our draft guideline document is fully complete! Work on that route's clean outline is nearly finished at a pretty 5,500 words or so. That’s an easy read, as we’ve had to boil it down from tens of thousands of words, weeks of discussion, and countless passing ideas!

Both Molly and Gordon began laughing out loud, which caused the newlyweds to smile as well, waving one last time at them before going over to where their families were situated. They greeted a few more guests in the way, quizzing them to know if everything was okay. Hosting a reception party was definitely a hard task. By the time they got to the last table, all Stiles wanted was to pour himself a dose of whiskey and sit back.

“Did something happen, honey?” The Y/H/C haired woman queried, her palms grasping his cheeks, melting instantaneously to those gorgeous honey brown eyes her husband had. “You look so down…”

“Nah, I’m just tired, babe.”

“Good night, my friends!” Her melodic voice echoed, the chit-chat ceasing to pay attention the woman. “As you know, there is a certain tradition in weddings and Stiles was very emphatic we did this one. It’s time to take the bride’s garter off, people!”

Glancing over to where he was standing, Y/N was able to see a small smirk pulling Stiles’, who she was yet to adjust calling husband, perfectly shaped lips up. “No. Shut up!” The exchanged confidant giggles, Malia’s rushed response swiftly letting the other girl know her assumption was indeed true.

Considering the boys weren’t interested in their conversation, they chose to head over to a table, pouring themselves some whiskey and enjoying some quiet time. But, a few minutes later, Stiles grew puzzled to why his best friend was so quiet.

“Did something happen, Scott?”

“No, dude. Everything’s fine.” The much tanned man sipped on his drink, energetically shaking his head.  

“Man, I know you’re still pissed about the wedding. Would you please get over it? May I bring the ‘you got married to my ex’ card?”

“My sister, dude? Really?” He rolled his eyes. “I mean, there’s probably more than three billion women out there, couldn’t you have chosen someone who wasn’t related to me?”

“Honestly? No, I couldn’t choose anyone else but her.” Stilinski’s answer was short and straight to the point. “I love her, Scotty! She’s my frickin’ soulmate!”

“Well, you better love her, because if you hurt my baby sister, I swear to God I will kick your ass.”

“Quit playing around, honey. We both know you love me way too much to hurt me…” The brown haired man winked, joking to take the edge of the situation off.

“Stiles, I’m serious!”

“I refuse to argue about this with you any longer. I’ve been in a relationship with your sister for six fucking years, I actually got married to her, do you think I’m kidding? Because I’m damn sure there’s enough evidence that I am serious about her.”

“Fine… You’re right. I’m just overreacting. She’s my baby sister, I want her to be happy.”

“And I will make her happy, trust me.” Scott folded his arms, nodding and caving in with a smile. “Now, let’s have a proper conversation, shall we? How has the married life treating you?”

“It’s fantastic!” A goofy grin enlightened his puppy face. “I can’t find nothing better than to wake up with her hair scattered all over the pillow, her legs tangled with mine, her small hands clutching my shoulders… Even the flower scent on our bed has got me hooked. I can’t describe how happy I am to have made this decision.”

“Has all the fighting dimmed down a little?”

Eren received quite the scolding when he arrived on the airship. Nearly half of the fandom agreed that he deserved the harsh treatment, while about 28% of the fandom thinks that the Survey Corps could have handled the situation a little better.

We still don’t know the full story behind Eren’s actions, but regardless of his intentions, many people were hurt in the process. 46% of the fandom believes that Eren’s actions will result in a positive outcome, while over half the fandom is either undecided until they have more information, or cannot look past what he did at all.

Team Eren! The losses are nothing compared to the gains. The world had declared war anyway, and they'd already de facto been at war for a decade. Wiping out an entire fleet, capturing the Warhammer, and successfully extracting Zeke was more than worth it. Very said about Sasha though, of course. Can't wait to go back home to Paradis again. I believe that if Eren and the SC worked together with their plans and made compromises for one another then the result could've been even better, since Eren would have an entire military intelligence to help and not a man [Zeke] that can't truly be trusted.

He acted independently without the approval of the Paradise Government to terrorise a festival full of civilians.  His actions resemble a terrorist, arrested is being let off easily. Jean is right about the situation, Eren is the biggest reason Sasha is dead, he manipulated the Military Operation in which she died.

Eren told Reiner he now understands RBA's actions...but neverthless he's repeating them, even more cruelly perhaps. If he won't understand that the cycle of violence must be stopped in order to reach real freedom then I don't think he will ever get a happy end (beside the fact that he's going to die at 23 anyway)

I'm glad that we finally got confirmation that Eren was just his usual egoistic self that went on his own and everyone has to save his sorry ass. I'm unsure the Yeager brothers have quite the same desired outcome in mind. Now that we’re starting to see the effects of EMA separation, it’s clear that Eren and Armin’s relationship is strained. Almost half of the fandom believe that they will work through it and remain friends, while many are apprehensive and think that things can go either way. I might be in the minority but I really like Gabi, I find her really interesting and she has the potential to act as a foil to Eren. She has the opportunity to see the other side of the conflict and change her ways and possibly help put a stop to the fighting.

Almost 90% of the fandom believe Levi and Mikasa will remain the sole Ackermans of the story. 10% believe Zeke might have found an Ackerman ally of his own.

Just when we thought Reiner couldn’t become any more beautiful, Isayama gives us the doki doki version of the armored titan. Unfortunately only 25.9% agree with us. A similar number of people just want Reiner to die. Maybe it’s because you wish to be his mercy angel, maybe because the unarmored titan now haunts your dreams and you’d like to be able to sleep again. That’s what 26.9% of you at least seem to hope for. Over a fifth of all respondents just wants Beardner back.

WH’s death was unexpectedly brutal.

I don't see why it's believed that Eren didn't get the warhammer power. You could see the flash that we have seen before, along with the expression in which is the same of when he receives memories.

Why is there still discussion over who got the WHT? We got a very clear shot of Eren getting some sort of "flash" while inside his Titan. I'll watch the live-action movie if I'm wrong.

I know we've seen Ymir survive much worse, but I think Pieck might die. Her pantzersquad is toast, Zeke is gone, I can't imagine Pieck as she is will be useful without either to support her. I think she's on death's door and they're going to try to pass her power onto Colt.

I do hope that Pieck's not gonna die yet.  Isayama already killed a major character. And he once stated in an interview that he would kill jist one for now.

the state of all the Survey Corps members (except for Floch, fuck him) is, in my opinion, the worst. Reiner's is obviously horrible, too; but for some reason, the fact that he's so okay with giving up almost makes me less worried about him. Death, for me, has always been sadder when the person who passed had adamantly wanted to stay alive.

I'm really worried about this new Eldian empire, that is not going to go well. So many questions to ask about what was happening on the Paradis side during the timeskip, I think it is time for some flashbacks in the next couple of chapters.

It was great, hoping for an information dump next chapter, along with Annie returning soon and Reiner suffering even more (is that even possible?) after he's now pretty much lost everything he cared about.

I hated it, and I hate this arc, and I hate all the side characters, and I don't care about any of it, and I can't freaking believe Isayama made Eren turn his back on all the morals Eren is BUILT on. I feel betrayed. So angry.

Boring chapter the only thing i enjoyed was gabi being an absolute badass. zeke and levi’s conversation was cringy af.

I'm glad the battle is over. This turn of events offers new perspectives around. Between Falco and Gabi going to Paradis, Zeke probably having his own goal, Marley rebuilding after purging the unnecessary elements, there's plenty of material for a final arc.

this was an excellent chapter. The tension felt from the scenes in it was so strong you could slice it. Connie's reaction is quite heartbreaking and frankly, I felt quite uncomfortable just seeing the looks Armin gave Eren and Mikasa. They've all changed quite a bit. Even when Jean blames Eren for Sasha's fate, I felt like it was more out of grief than ire.

Can't wait for Reiner to come back

I had genuinely hoped that over time, more people would sympathize with Gabi, especially since shes a kid and has worked her ass off to make a better life for her and her family. Turns out, people only seem to hate her more now. I'm not thrilled that she killed Sasha but in her perspective she's an enemy and part of the reason her friends and allies were killed. War has two sides, people! That's kinda the whole point of the marley arc…

The new chapters are my sole reason for living now

I've been seeing a lot of hatred for Gabi this month, but I honestly can't get mad at her. It's understandable for people to be angry (especially big Sasha fans), but I really feel bad for all the shit she's gone through and how completely brainwashed she is.

I`ve seen people saying this chapter is the worst because of how easily Levi and Zeke "became friends”  and are provoking each other. To me, it's clear that Eren forced the survey corps to capture Zeke to fulfill his unknown agenda, and that Levi hasn't forgiven Zeke for what he did to Erwin + 200 other Survey Corps members. I also hope that Zeke is just continuing Eren Krueger's secret plan (giving the Attack Titan to Grisha so he can get the Founding Titan while Zeke stays on Marley as a double agent). That would be the most badass plan in all history.

He's from the fucking film 12 angry men. like, aside from letterbox bootlickers and middle school hass students NO ONE has watched this film let alone care about it, it was made in 1957, is shot almost exclusively in one room and the entire film is just middle aged white men yelling at each other over whether some not white poor kid should be sent to the electric chair. what the fuck.

I have a counter, and I've watched 12 Angry men a total of 145 times. The figure is up on my wall in tallies. whenever the number goes up, I like to watch it in 5's so then I can put another full group of tallies on my wall.

I have incredibly detailed stories about how Davis would boogie down to ringo starr's solo career, and they're written within the margins of a book called Tobruk written by Peter Fitzsimons. The only reason I reread that book is to wonder at my elaborate works of fiction

My HASS teacher was the one to introduce me to 12 Angry Men as he played it for the entire class. He gave us a set of questions to complete on the film and a few Law based questions as a little treat, and he expected it to be handed in the next day. What he didn't expect was an 11 page monster of a response that included social commentary, 4 paragraphs dissecting the character of Davis alone, deeply discussed comparisons between the landscapes of politics and law in the 50's to the present, and basically an entire point-for-point summarisation of the film, completed with obscure quotes from Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon and Presley (Elvis). He presented the printed masterpiece in front of the entire class to shame me.

After class he explained how his favourite Juror would either be 6 or 5, because 6 seems like a big dumb teddybear and he just liked 5. I explained how I liked Davis because he didn't want to send a kid to die, then he told me how Davis would make a good cowboy (at this point in time I was unaware of Henry Fonda's role in Once Upon A Time in The West) and I proceeded to go home and write a 3 part orchestral composition that I could pretend would play as the soundtrack to Juror 8: A Cowboy's Tale or something like that

I had started to make an animation meme starring Davis but only gave up when photoshop literally deleted itself from my laptop

4.01 News Cycle

Prescient as always, Madam Secretary opens it’s fourth season by reaffirming it will not shy away from current and pressing real world issues. Despite talking place in an alternate universe where the President of the United States is not a giant orange moron, (or f***ing moron as his Secretary of State likes to refer to him) Secretary Elizabeth McCord is confronted with the growing threat of Fake News. When a foreign official dies suspiciously during a one on one meeting with Elizabeth at the United Nations General Assembly, she becomes the subject of a Fake News story identifying her as the murderer.

‘Fake News’ is a term that is thrown around far too often in the current political climate as a catchall to dismiss any negative story. In this episode the true definition of Fake News is well illustrated and it’s danger highlighted. Disinformation has always played a role in the body politic and the world at large, but with the advent of social media it has become a prevalent and powerful tool of bad actors and ordinary citizens alike. From the Brexit referendum to the elections in the United States, France, Germany and others, Fake News and the weaponisation of information through social media have influenced people and events on an unprecedented scale. But now Fake News has evolved to become a weapon, not only of elections, but of anyone with a message to push and a platform from which to push it. with the sole purpose of attacking truth and reason to erode trust in democratic institutions and democracy itself.  

Two of the three most important scenes in this episode are Nadine explaining the source of the Fake News story to the Secretary before her interview, and the Secretary’s interview itself.

“It began on a conspiracy mongering fringe website called Champion of Facts, it spread through social media at an alarmingly fast rate, has been retweeted and shared through countless sources. What’s not helping is the hundred plus phone calls that Mr Bento made to our office… apparently you were avoiding him because he had something on you. Then you became hysterical, revealing choice of words, so you stabbed him in the chest during an unscheduled closed door meeting with him at the UN.”

Fake News stories, perhaps not of this magnitude, are created in exactly the same way every single day, in an attempt to influence people on almost every issue. A small shred of truth is taken, twisted into something sinister and spread across social media. The hundred calls to the State Department, Elizabeth being Ex-CIA, an unscheduled meeting, of course she murdered him. With her bare hands or was it a cocktail glass? Leave it up to the readers of this Fake News to decide, it doesn’t matter as long as the seed of “she’s a murderer’ has been sown. Something else worth noting is Nadine’s comment that “hysterical” was a revealing choice of words, which highlights the coded language used to describe women that act as a sexist dog whistle to those who subscribe to that kind of discriminatory thinking.

Before her interview Elizabeth tells Nadine she thinks “there’s still a strong divide between legitimate news sources and fringe based hooey.” but during the interview is ambushed with a statement by Senator Morejon threatening a congressional investigation into the incident.

“This is obvious crackpot theorising, which quite possibly is the work of a disinformation campaign by a foreign power. What Senator Morejon is doing by legitimising this story is not just immoral and unethical, it undermines the stability of democratic government. Reliable information is the bedrock of any institution, be it science, government or private enterprise, if citizens can’t tell the difference between fact and fiction then the entire project of civilisation turns to dust… By bringing legitimacy to a ridiculous murder claim against me he’s using the tactics not just of dirty politics but of warfare, because it’s dictatorial, it’s autocratic and it’s un-american. Furthermore a mainstream media outlet ought to have a better understanding of it’s responsibility to the public and refuse to signal boost these kinds of outright lies.”

The mainstream media, who in our world as well as the world of Madam Secretary, largely continue to abdicate their responsibility to place the truth above all else in favour of ratings and increased advertising revenue, no longer act as the so called fourth estate. False equivalencies between the facts and blatant lies are made on almost every issue and presented as a balanced debate. There are not two sides to every issue. Framing everything as a debate and leaving the public to draw their own conclusions is a dereliction of journalism’s duty. Journalism should be objective, but not to the point that it excludes what is true and what can be proven.

One of the things that makes Madam Secretary such a refreshing show of the political persuasion is the State Department senior staff. We’ve seen relationships and bonds grow in and amongst Elizabeth and her staff for 3 seasons now, reaching a level of familiarity and comfort with their roles and backstories. The battle of the Chiefs of Staff made for a funny yet full circle moment when Elizabeth’s Chief of Staff, Nadine met the White House Chief of Staff Russell Jackson’s angry outburst with one of her own, thinking back to the first season it’s hard to imagine Nadine defending Elizabeth with such fervour yet now she is as protective of Elizabeth as Russell is of the President. It’s also hard to imagine Blake not making wonderfully pithy comments every episode, a favourite of mine this episode being “I believe that’s Mr Jackson’s knock ma’am.”

Russell does raise some important points during his dressing-down, however angrily they were delivered. “In the age of the internet a lot of nut jobs reach just as wide an audience as the Secretary of State.” with the fact that 22% of the American people believe Elizabeth is a murderer being testament to that. Elizabeth’s ability to effectively do her job does hinge on her credibility and so Nadine makes her finest point ““Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants.” the only way we can possibly fight this rumour is with the truth.”

The truth in this case becomes rather complicated. The deceased Mr Bento who was the assistant vice minister of Timor-Leste, a Southeast Asian nation, had been trying to contact Elizabeth to blow the whistle on the impending sale of island atoll’s to a powerful Mexican drug cartel. The cartel had infiltrated Timor-Leste’s government at the highest level, threatening it’s President into the sale to establish a shipping base, leaving Timor-Leste in danger of becoming a narco-state. The cartel poisoned Mr Bento using a rare compound that only the Russian’s and they were known to use for homicide, the State Department team managed to piece the story together from this fact.

Once the team’s theory is corroborated Elizabeth believes the situation in Timor-Leste can begin to be righted with both American and Chinese intervention. Elizabeth meets with Foreign Minister Chen to gain Chinese backing and while doing so highlights the increasing globalisation of Fake News and the need for international cooperation to combat it.

“This has something to do with everyone’s troubles in the news… this is what we’re all facing if we don’t fight back against bad actors weaponising the news, the Colima cartel is manipulating this narrative. Right now they’re focused on me, tomorrow? Could be you… even your regulations won’t stop some guy in Macedonia being paid to manufacture clickbait, we’re all going to lose this battle if we don’t stand together and call it out.”

No episode of Madam Secretary is complete without some Team McCord time. The other very serious event Elizabeth dealt with this episode is Alison leaving for college and her inability to be there to help her move in. While it started out as a sweet display of motherly fretting that she was missing this parental right of passage, we learn that Elizabeth’s feelings go deeper than that. When she tells her brother how hard she found moving into college alone by herself as an orphan, her desire to help Ali move in takes on greater significance. Elizabeth’s recollection of her own experience underscores her commitment to be as involved and loving a mother as she can be, and we know she is. When Elizabeth manages to meet Ali and Henry there the delight is palpable and made for a special Team McCord moment.

The third of what i consider to be the three most important scenes of this episode was Elizabeth coming home. The man beside the woman as Dr Henry McCord once dubbed himself, proved once again why he is the best fictional husband currently on television. Henry and Elizabeth talked out the episode’s events, with Henry informing his wife that a snap poll now showed only 12% of American’s thinking that she’s murderer and listening to Elizabeth voice her fear that “It’s scary how fast everyone jumped aboard that train, even scarier to think that a drug syndicate can use the power of Fake News to rattle a country and convince them to lose faith in their government officials.” presenting one of the biggest challenges democracy now faces. Henry promised he’s working on it then provides the perfect distraction for the beleaguered Secretary of State. This balance of communication, deep understanding, support and affection is a true representation of a healthy marriage and what makes us love the McCords so much.

The final scene, featuring a nice cameo by the episode’s director and MOFOTUS Morgan Freeman, where Elizabeth intends to warn Senator Morejon that he’s playing a dangerous game ends with him issuing his own warning.

“In this brave new world of scattered partisan media where unscrupulous outlets are desperate for any juicy new story and political plot twist that they can find, i believe i can chip away at Dalton’s approval ratings quickly and efficiently. 12% of the American public thinks that you’re a murderer Madam Secretary. I can work with that.”

The Senator hits on a key aspect of Fake News, it’s power lies in it’s ability to affect the way people think. To make them doubt and mistrust institutions, elected officials and mainstream media outlets. To sow discord and divisiveness amongst citizens. To make people question reality and replace it with a fabrication. Regardless if a story is eventually debunked or not, once those who are susceptible to Fake News believe it, they will not be convinced otherwise. Whether or not Fake News is a continuing theme in Madam Secretary, it is a dangerous daily threat to democracy and free thought in all our lives.
