It’s honestly annoying how often people try to dismiss the FE3H female characters as just “waifu bait.” I’m sure everyone can think of the biggest characters to get this accusation (ex. Edelgard, Bernie...) and for those ones I can at least see where the argument comes from even if I disagree and have a strong dislike for that term, but I’ve also been seeing it for just like any female character people like? Like I recently saw someone claiming Lysithea was waifu bait and I just do not get how that could be. Like she has a distinct character, interesting backstory, traits/scenes that make her unlikeable, all three of her designs are very unsexualized, and there’s no more player pandering for her than any other characters. The only argument I could think of is that she’s drawn to be pretty but so is almost every character (there is an argument to be made that male characters in this game are allowed to be unconventially attractive in a way female characters aren’t but I’ve never seen that point made in these conversations). I’ve also seen people call Marianne “waifu bait” because her depression is player pandering (every character has some degree of player pandering, male or female, but if how her depression is handled makes her waifu bait then Dimitri’s mental health issues should make him husbando bait imo, which is not how I view either character to be clear). Then there are claims I just don’t even know how to respond to. Ingrid and Leonie are waifu bait because they’re tomboys, Annette is waifu bait because her three hopes design is a sexual milk maid fantasy or something. There’s a way to criticize the designs/writing of female characters that doesn’t involve misogynistically reducing them to essentially sex objects and there are plenty of reasons people enjoy the female characters of FE3H that have nothing to do with being attracted to them.

Anyway,,, a little under a year ago I posted a drawing of dimileth on a snowy horse date. That drawing ended up getting wAYYY more traction than I've basically gotten on,, anything I've posted,,, on any site ever,,, and it was also a piece I put a lot of effort into of one of my favorite ships so. I'm really glad other people enjoyed it so much, and it's still one of my favorite pieces I've made to this day :,D

isn't it just great how all of the ways smellygard and claude foiled each other and reflected what the other said about themselves (smellygard being the distrustful liar claude said he was, claude being the I Fight For The People person smellygard said she was) were all completely thrown in the garbage cuz Hopes said "actually what if claude WAS just smellygard in a different hat".

isn't it amazing how a non-insignificant portion of the the fandom refuses to let claude be anything more than an opportunistic lying manipulative idiot doing and believing everything smellygard says cuz "that's what he always was and only his TRUE fans recognize that, unlike the people who just wanted him to follow dimitri/rhea around".

i hate it here 😭

the thing that gets me about it is the people who have insisted since the original game came out that everything claude does is manipulative and machiavellian, like he's ontologically incapable of just. being a nice person.

beyond the fact that it's a bad take on the character, it is—like most other ideas that come from that particular corner of fandom—insultingly soporific. if you're going to claim your fanon is better than everyone else's, at least make it slightly more interesting than the average airplane novel.

"You're so pretty," Yuri says softly as he sets his makeup brush down on the countertop, smiling. "Here, try these on." He goes through his closet and finds a pair of red high heels that surprisingly fit Demetria. "What do you think?"

Demetria stares at herself in the mirror. Her hair is still short and pretty and blond, and she hopes to grow it out long and pretty like Yuri's. She feels her heart racing as she looks closer into the mirror. Yuri is delicate when applying makeup; Demetria looks and even feels pretty for a change.

But what will Felix think? In actuality, Felix doesn't know. And all this time, Felix thought he'd been dating a guy. He never explicitly stated whether he was gay or not, but often says he "doesn't care about gender" as long as his partner can defeat him in battle.

"Do you have a different dress?" Demetria asks quietly, still getting used to the makeup on her face.

"I do, yeah," says Yuri as he enters his closet again, sorting through all of the dresses in Constance's collection. "I think you'd look pretty in purple, princess."

Demetria smiles shyly as Yuri takes out a beautiful purple sundress with flower embodiments stitched along the hem. And it fits someone as tall as Demetria, thankfully. Yuri helps Demetria out of her school clothes and into the dress.

"Oh, I have matching thongs too," Yuri quickly realises. "We can switch the heels out for those?"

"I think that's okay," says Demetria. She can only hope that Felix also thinks it's okay. "Do you think Felix will–"

"Don't worry about him," Yuri waves off Demetria's concerns. "Because I'm taking you out instead."

"What?"

"You heard me," Yuri smirks. "I'm taking you out on the town. You're the princess of Faerghus, after all."

Princess... it's going to take a lot of getting used to. It makes Demetria's heart flutter. Yuri continues, "And if anyone gives you a hard time, they'll wake up with a knife up their ass."

Demetria chuckles softly, smoothing out her dress. "Well... I'll come along. But then I have to meet Felix in the dining hall."

Yuri almost looks disappointed, but hides it very well behind his charming smile. "Not a problem. If you need anything else, just let me know, princess."

"Thank you."

I feel like the way a lot of the female characters Ingrid has supports with push make up on her despite her not being into it pre time skip is a bit uncomfortable. Dorothea, Annette, and Mercedes all try to get her to wear make up and she, at best, reluctantly agrees. At no point does she seem enthusiastic about this, frequently starting her sentences with “um” and the voice actor using a hesitant tone making me think she’s agreeing more out of a desire to not hurt their feelings. The most Ingrid says to express interest is that its “somewhat intriguing” but that she doesn’t have time. And despite this, Annette continues to insist that she should wear makeup because then she can be the most fabulous knight (but this emphasis on wearing makeup to be a better knight is never applied to say Ashe). Then, when she finally puts her foot down with Annette, Annette says she’s going to just throw the makeup palette away and Ingrid gives in purely because she doesn’t want it to go to waste which was manipulative on Annette’s part. Then the Dorothea C support which, while less pushy imo, still has Dorothea insisting she’s going to give Ingrid a make over without once asking if Ingrid wants it and she respond with “goodness, okay.” Not exactly an enthusiastic response. And in the chapter with the White Heron Cup Ingrid states that Mercedes locked her in her room and slathered makeup on her face which, again, doesn’t paint a positive picture in regards to how Ingrid feels about it.

Despite this, I see a lot of praise for Ingrid learning to love makeup because it has a woman learn to like more feminine things but first off, a female character liking or not liking feminine things is not inherently better or worse and secondly, she could start embracing feminine things without people forcing it on her. For example, her Annette C support could have Annette asking Ingrid about if she’s ever done makeup and Ingrid saying she hasn’t. Annette could then explain why she enjoys doing makeup and invite Ingrid to try it and Ingrid could agree, or some other scenario where it seems like Ingrid is doing something she wants instead of just making herself uncomfortable for other’s sake. 

An example of a support that I think handles Ingrid’s femininity better is her support with Mercedes. It starts with her complimenting Mercedes on her eye for fashion and her lavender scented handkerchief when Mercedes offers to share some with her over a tea party. Here, we see Ingrid actively showing interest in a more feminine side of Mercedes and wanting to take part in it making it clear that this is something Ingrid herself wants. And at not point in this support does Mercedes try to force this on Ingrid, giving her the freedom needed to properly explore her femininity and figure out how she personally wants to interact with it.
