thinking about usopp having a really weird relationship with food when he returns to the crew after boin.

he digs into the meals sanji prepares with the same enthusiasm he always has, but the chef notices the sniper is much more careful in how much he consumes. quietly, sanji watches for weeks as usopp eats just enough to fill himself. before sabaody, usopp would gorge himself on food, drink, and dessert until he physically couldn’t eat any more. he’d fight luffy tooth and nail for every bite. now, sanji sees usopp eat no more than one and half servings of a meal before pushing his remnants luffy’s way. he watches as usopp, who used to be as much as a meat enthusiast as luffy, piles his plate with more vegetables than protein or carbs. usopp, who sanji knew to love cake and ice cream, now limits himself to one slice or a single, small bowl.

so sanji adapts. he experiments with the quantity of food he gives the sniper until he gets it just right. he doesn’t say anything about it to him—eating and food habits are personal, after all. as long as he’s eating, it’s fine.

usopp tells him what changed of his own accord, one night when he’s on watch and sanji comes to deliver a midnight snack.

“i’m sorry for not eating as much of your food, lately,” usopp says, sipping on the tea sanji had brought.

“i overindulged on boin,” he explains. “the whole island was made up of some of the most delicious food i’d ever had. it was a trap, of course. so the island could lure fattened prey into its belly. but i fell for it at the beginning. just gorged myself on anything i could get my hands on. the stuff that grew on boin was addictive. i never went hungry. but…

“i lost myself to the island in a lot of ways. the worst was when i lost myself to the food. every time, i knew i should stop but i just couldn’t. it’s like my mind and body weren’t my own. it was terrible.

“i got big. i didn’t hate my body or anything, i just hated that it felt as if i didn’t have control of it anymore. that i didn’t have control of myself. it’s a terrifying thought at any time, but being alone and knowing that luffy and the rest of you were waiting for me, and waiting for me to come back stronger while i could barely get a handle on my own eating habits scared me more than anything. how could i be useful to the crew when i couldn’t control my own appetite? it was so, so hard. i had to be more disciplined than i ever have been.

“and now i’m back here and your food scares me ‘cause it’s better than anything i had on boin or anywhere else. i’m scared that one day i’ll lose control again, so i’ve been super careful. i’m sorry if i’ve hurt your feelings or anything. it just… hasn’t been easy.”

the two sit in silence for a while as they both reflect on usopp’s words. eventually, sanji speaks up, his visible eye meeting both of usopp’s. he rests his hand atop usopp’s, curling his fingers around the digits.

“thank you for telling me. as humans, our relationship with food can get really weird, at times. sometimes for a long time or even forever. but i’m glad that you’re eating despite what happened. and i promise that everything will be okay. you won’t lose control of yourself again. and if you do, i’m here to help. all of us are. but from now on, when you eat you don’t need to think, okay? just let me feed you and enjoy. i’ll take care of the rest.”

usopp looks at sanji, eyes wide with numerous emotions flickering across his face. he’d almost forgotten this in his two years away. how it feels to be cared for by someone who wants the best for you. to be seen so fully by someone who will do anything to keep you happy and safe. tension falls from his shoulders. the burden he has been carrying upon them has been relieved.

“okay,” usopp says with a tremble in his voice. he sniffles and blinks back tears. he leans his head on sanji’s shoulder and returns the grip on his hand. “thank you.”

sanji’s reply is silent as he rests his head atop usopp’s. anytime.

Y/N’s POV

Nick and Matt stood at the island as me and Chris walked into the kitchen. I caught Nick’s eye as I set down enough food to feed a small militia. He just stares.

Matt hits him in the shoulder, prompting him to give him a dirty look before speaking. “I’m sorry…” He looked like he wasn’t sure what all he needed to apologize for. “I’m sorry that I punched you” he nodded toward Chris. “I’m sorry that I made you cry, I feel really bad about that.” He averts his eyes, and I think I see a small glint of shame.

I physically can’t stay mad at him, and I make it very obvious when I envelop him into a rib crushing hug. He whispers a small thank you in my ear before I walk back to the other side of the island to unpack the food. As I start unpacking breakfast I feel arms wrap around my waist, and a chin resting on my shoulder.

I freeze up, and Chris mumbles a quick “is this okay?” Into my hair. I look around realizing that Matt and Nick don’t even notice, much too invested in their food to care. I nod my head, trying to will the rosy shade to leave my face.

I’m failing miserably.

after breakfast me and Chris went upstairs to watch a movie in his room. Matt was quick to respond in the worst way possible.

“Sock that wang before you bang… and please be quiet, I don’t want to hear my brother doin it”

Y/N: 😨

Nick: 😟

Matt: 😁

needless to say, me and Chris practically teleported upstairs and away from that mortifying experience. We enter his room in a fit of laughter, practically collapsing onto the bed.

After a second I noticed that Chris had stopped laughing… his laughter is addictive, and I already missed it. I turned to see him staring at me with a look in his blue eyes that I couldn’t quite grasp. He looked happy and sad and something else all at once.

“What?” I giggled as I said it, still thinking about what Matt said only a few minutes earlier.

“are you doing okay?” This question again… I never know what to say when people ask me that. Right now I’m doing great… but in 30 minutes, or a week, or even a month I might break down again.

that’s never the answer that people want. They want something simple, yes or no. He stares at me patiently waiting for my response, it makes me feel bad for not having one.

“I’m okay right now…” he gives me a quick nod before speaking again.

“Okay, will you tell me when you aren’t doing good?” Why is he offering this, he doesn’t want to deal with me. “You need a safe space, and you clearly aren’t going to tell Nick. Let me be your safe space.”

With that we got comfy on his bed and found a movie.

he was always so sweet and caring. He would hold me while I cried Myself to sleep, he would walk me home early from an event if I wanted to leave, he would hold my hair back and get me a heating pad when my cramps got bad… no matter what, he was there. He had also started being more touchy in public, leaning into the fake relationship for those around us. It made me feel things that I tried to avoid for years.

I think I hate him… how DARE he make me fall in love with him, knowing that none of this is real. How dare he kiss me at parties, and hold me during movie nights, and make me feel safe when none of it is real for him.

“you okay baby?” He snaps me out of my thoughts with the use of his new favorite nickname for me. I melt when he calls me his baby, unfortunately a small part of me also dies inside every time I hear it.

“yeah, just a little tired.” We’ve been at this party for like three hours, and I haven’t even touched my drink. When Chris is tipsy he get more brave with his PDA, I don’t want to risk forgetting a single moment where he is touching me.

“do you want to walk home?” He doesn’t want to leave, he shouldn’t have to leave because I’m sad that he doesn’t love me.

“no. we should stay, you’re having fun. I’m actually going to go get a drink, maybe it will make me feel better.” He looks at me for a second before letting go of my hip, allowing me to grab a drink.

How did I get here?

It’s like one second I was listening to Chris tell a story, and now I’m dancing to some annoying pop song. I need to find Chris, I definitely had a few too many drinks.

I stumbled around for a minute, everything is spinning and making me want to throw up. I don’t know if I can walk all the way home, but I don’t want to make all of them leave early. I grab my phone in an attempt to call Chris, but by the time he picks up I’ve forgotten what I was doing.

Chris’s POV

I look down at my phone to see that Y/N is calling me, and it makes me a little worried. I pick the phone up to my ear, trying to head over the sounds of music and talking. I don’t hear her, only making me more worried.

She almost never drinks, because she has a very low tolerance. Last time I saw her, she was already three drinks in and proclaiming her love for the song that was on.

That was an hour ago.

I quickly scour the crowd in an attempt to find her face. And when I do my heart drops.

There she is in her skin tight jeans and corset top, looking lost with tears in her eyes. I rush to her side, immediately pulling the drink from her hand. She looks like she’s about to start crying.

“hey baby, can you look at me please?” When I say that she starts crying and she doesn’t seem like she’s stopping any time soon. “Hey, it’s okay. Do you want to find somewhere quiet so that you can sit down for a minute?” She nods her head aggressively before stumbling towards the bedroom of whoever is hosting.

I turned to Y/N, she looked out of it. Then all of a sudden life came back to her eyes in the worst way possible. She almost fell down in her attempt to get to the bathroom.

“it’s okay baby” I whispered sweet nothings to her as I held her hair and rubbed her back. Nick and Matt showed up shortly after she finished dry heaving, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen her drink anything as fast as she drank that water.

If I thought it was a hassle trying to get her in the car, I had no clue how hard it would be to get her up a flight of stairs. She giggled as I picked her up bridal style… it made me so happy to hear her laughing.

once she got into more comfortable clothes, she fell asleep in no time.

as she held onto me and nuzzled into my side, my heart shattered. All I want is for her to be happy, but I know that I can’t fix everything. I kiss her on the forehead before rolling over and going to sleep.

someone liked one of my TOH headcanon posts from earlier this year and it reminded me about the specific headcanons i have for exactly what types of games the hexsquad plays and how they play them.

luz is obv an RPG fantasy fan. anything with a juicy story and a character creator and complex lore she’ll love. she definitely plays series like elder scrolls and baldur’s gate and final fantasy. she also plays final fantasy 14 and has her character as the good witch luzura and she isnt good at playing it like an mmo is supposed to be played but she loves the story. when endwalker came out luz couldnt stop sobbing to the point that camila was actually worried about her. also enjoys roguelikes such as hades or binding of isaac even if she can only play for so long before getting too frustrated. she also 100% plays genshin impact and gets into arguments online with other genshin fans.

amity is a fighting game girl. she is highly competitive and practices combos with her eyes shut. she prefers the tekken series but when luz wants to play with her they play guilty gear bcus luz likes it’s art style the most. she also likes fantasy RPGs but is way more picky about which ones she plays. she likes fire emblem. she also plays ff14 with luz and is actually good at the game (she carries luz sometimes) but isnt a huge fan of MMOs. she also is the one in the friend group with the NASA ass PC rig with a custom case and the most organized wiring you’ve ever seen with the lcd screen on the liquid cooled cpu and the azura figurine inside the case. she also does custom wraps for all her consoles.

hunter likes games that are very much like, micromanagement sims. like civ5 or cities skylines or factorio (i dont know anything about it but ive been assured by my sister that hunter plays modded factorio) but he’s also a fan of like, old school FPS games like doom and half life. i can see him doing speedruns of those games. (also he 100% once got addicted to some game like fuckin. galactic pinball or something to the point where he was staying up all night and not sleeping so he could play more pinball. in order to get him to stop playing so much and actually get some sleep, gus used illusions to make hunter think he was hallucinating about pinball and scared him into not looking at a single screen or monitor for like three weeks.)

gus is a very chill gamer but he likes games that he can sink hours and hours into. instead of playing a wide variety of games he has a select few that he dedicates his time into learning every last mechanic, but there’s also some games he just plays casually. like with pokemon games he’ll put hundreds of hours into them and carefully curate his team and does like nuzlocke runs but when he plays on his and willow’s shared-custody new horizons island he’ll just walk around and catch bugs and shit and not really worry about upgrading his house and make matching fits with his favorite villager.

willow prefers cozy games, like slime rancher or stardew valley or the aforementioned shared new horizons island, but she’s also a fucking menace about them. like she goes HARD on the min-maxing and automation and shit. while gus is wandering around their island catching fish, willow’s busy rearranging her fully upgraded mansion up in the hills and harassing any villagers she doesnt like with nets and deciding what hybrids to plant in front of her bell trees (she only has bell trees for the aesthetic. gus isnt allowed to harvest them) she would also be running the most high profit slime ranch ever but the way she treats her slimes makes hunter upset whenever he sees her just fuckin throwing them off a cliff the second they arent useful to her anymore. (meanwhile hunter names each one of his slimes and always feeds them their favorite foods and cried over casey & beatrix)

vee enjoys survival/strategic horror games, like DBD, resident evil, deadspace, or even FNAF. she’s the type of person to see the goriest most violent death in a video game ever and just go “ew yucky” then carry on. masha and her are often playing DBD together while in a call and are the most annoying pair of suvivors ever. she also likes games such as original katamari and pikmin 1 and chulip. she's also the undefeated DDR champion of the friend group.

and of COURSE they all play video games together. they all have a terraria world they play on together where they all are focused on their own little projects while still working together and are slowly building up their own village/mansion/castle/fort but luz keeps rushing ahead of everyone just bcus she's so excited and she definitely somehow ends up summoning the wall of flesh accidentally

they DID have a modded minecraft world for a few months with both tech mods and magic mods but while hunter, amity, and vee all focused on their factories and computers and technology, gus, willow, and luz fucked around with all the crazy magic and accidentally found out by blowing up a factory. this is where heightened tension between the the warlocks & the scientists began. this spark eventually turned into a full fledged war that lasted two months before it ended in mutually assured destruction to the point where no one could actually load into the server without their game crashing.

bonus: camila isnt much of a gamer with one exception-- when she was in college manny introduced her to WoW and got her hooked. it was Their Game that they played together all the time. they made cosplays of their characters together. they had several dates in game. they optimized their characters to perfect compliment one another when they ran dungeons with their guild. even since manny passed camila still plays every so often and keeps in touch with their guild members. for the longest time luz has 0 idea that camila plays WoW at all and only finds out after the whole secret nerd confession.

Luffy: you who bears all your teeth in every smile.

Hearing you laugh for the first time put a magic spell on Luffy, your giggles echoing in his mind like an unbearable ear worm since the very first moment. He loved the little creases the formed around your eyes every time you smiled wholeheartedly - your joyful grin was always able to light up the entire room. How they worshipped not only death, but the strongest chakra beast. That foxes where resided with great respect for their trickster nature and playful demeanor. Minato gained a respectful feeling toward the fox that desired the same as his wife, the ability to run amongst the water and waves of Uzushio once again. The watch the glittering city decorated with seals and protected by the whirling pools. (I love when Uzushio is mentioned and actually used for impact with the Uzumaki's past!!)

He could not kill Kurama, not just because Kurama could not be killed, but because he knew that this was not the Kurama that his wife spoke of fondly. This was a beast under the control of a being far more evil.

Naruto is raised by none, all hate him for what he contains. The civilians peacefully unaware that Kurama was sealed, but not chained. He heard the words of the fools that roamed the village. He whispered softly to the blonde child, to trick and take what he needed to live and survive.

Naruto still struggles in school, like his mother before him. The school and teachers are not understanding to the fact that Naruto’s massive reserves of chakra do not allow him to sit still for hours at a time, that his mind does not understand like the rest. The seals that have all been woven into his blood do not allow for this teaching style to work. Iruka does his best but his position does not allow for him to speak out, all he can do is try his best but his best can only do so much for a child who physically cannot learn like the rest.

Naruto is a child with the hair and eyes of his father but everything from the shape of his eyes to the very blood that corses threw his veins to the chakra that nearly explodes out of him at every opportunity is truly, his mother’s. (MOMMA'S BOY!!)

Minato’s former team member (yes pls) feeds Naruto a dish that his mother loved nearly as much as her husband. The former team member laughs loud and heartily as the child wolfs down enough to make even the Akimichi look concerned. But the old man does not even blink, he’d seen Kushina in action. All that Chakra comes from somewhere. What ever that made up ramen had the Uzumaki addicted to it, and the older man was happy to feed the love of ramen to the uzumaki child left behind by the village.

Kakashi is truly a shell of his former self, only Gai is the reason he wakes up now a days. The man keeps Kakashi on his feet with the one day promise of his almost dad returning, that one day he can finally meet the boy that was supposed to be like a little brother.

The day that Naruto steals the seal, Kakashi should be more surprised but deep down. He’s not really all that shocked. Gai laughs after learning of the news, soon rushing off to make his team train more. As if a scrawny pre-genin could steal the most secure scroll in all the village then he needed to step up the training of his little youthful students. Iruka is hospitalized and Naruto learns the truth, the truth that deep down Naruto already knew to and extent at least. He knew he was different in more way then being the only bright blonde in the village. Naruto had stared blankly at the hokage before telling him “your security is shit” just after being told a suppose to be demon resides in his guts. The ANBU had a hard time not snorting at the face the old man made upon being told by a 10 year old that his seal where terrible and the scroll wasn’t all that impressive. Though Naruto did end the night learning a clone jutsu that he could actually use, the shadow clone. What a wonderful little reward.

The day Kakashi meets Naruto, he obtains an erase filled with chalk dust to the face. When the smoke screen is batted away he sees the blond with a fox like smile laughing, the pink haired civilian raised girl is yelling at Naruto for his immaturity while the last of the Uchiha couldn’t care. His eyes neutral to the scene but ever watching and ever taking in every detail. But Kakashi expected nothing less of Uzumaki boy and the Uchiha. He grew up with Kushina as a mother figure with her stories of her childhood and stories of her clan’s antics and her laugh like a fox as well as Itachi and Obito, both Uchiha just a step or two behind him always watching his every move even without their clan’s eyes.

Finally the day of the wave mission arrives, a C rank. Not all that eventful, not a goon or unexpected surprise. At least for the rest of the team, Naruto is pulled aside by and old man. His hair grey and his hearing going but his eyes as sharp as a tack. He’s told of the blond man who protects the land of waves, that he lives far out on the old islands of uzushio. That every month more people board the boat the man sails to come to the islands. The tale of beautiful grey eyes of baby’s who toss of the blankets before their parents tuck them away again. Of giggling children with pet dogs that are a bit too off to truly be dogs. Of the crates and crates of supplies that’s taken to the islands not only from wave but from dozens of other small nations. Ones that won’t tell the major nations with ninjas of the silently rising power of a man who had nothing less to loose but all that much to gain. (Hell. Yeah!)

Naruto is told he looks nearly just like the blond man.

Naruto is told the man has already came to shore this month, but next month he could meet the man. That the nation hidden in the whirling tides would gladly allow the boy who never felt at home in the dirt and trees could finally belong.

Things to note:

Naruto can’t read, Kurama is essentially a second internal voice that reads to Naruto. (this is so funny to me I love it)

Naruto still wears mostly orange

Strange dogs are foxes and otters (chef's kiss)

The people going to Uzushio are uzumaki and other escaped clans of Uzushio, they just hide their appearances.

Naruto sneaks out of the village to go back to wave to meet the man (Minato)

Minato intentionally made the seal looser so Kurama could have more freedom within the seal as the hidden leaf would never allow Kurama to go free once again.

No one realized that the seal was loose because Pervy sage doesn’t know what the seal is supposed to look like in the first place. He learned from non-Uzumaki sources. Minato learned from his beautiful wife

"Stop trailing me, Grady. I don't want to talk to you!" I shouted slamming my truck door with him following my trail. Owen and I had been dating a couple months before I got a call to become the T-Rex trainer at the new dinosaur theme park. We decided to break up because he thought I deserved to be happy and not worry about him being gone in the Navy. But he was an idiot to think that was a good idea and just my luck two weeks later he started working here the same day I did. "Can we please stop and talk for a second?" He asked throwing his arms out away from his sides but I just scoff pressing a button and the code opening my dinosaur paddock still not talking to him. Owen followed after me still baffled that they had found someone to train the T-Rex. It was almost a death mission in his eyes considering she was the biggest meat eater on the Earth.

Clapping my hands together in front of me I call out into the air while Owen stands closer to the door in fear. He rarely ever went inside a paddock with the raptors unless they were in the metal head brasses. The trees moved where I see her big head peaking through as she lowered it letting my hand press right in between her eyes. "Hey there, Girly. I told you I'd come to see you." I whispered seeing her eyes flickered up in the direction of Owen where I turned my head holding out my other hand for him. "Come here Grady. Don't be a stranger or she might stomp on you." He slowly walked up arms out in the stance he used on the raptors until I take his right hand in mine pressing it against where mine was. "I'm sorry about leaving you the way I did. I just thought you - in case I died Y/n. I didn't want you to-" I cut him off glaring up at him since he's taller than I am where Rexy blows some air from her nose making a warning sound. "I don't want to hear your excuses. They won't do you any good. It didn't help me at all. While we were apart all I thought about was if you were with someone else in the Navy, sleeping with them and saying I love you!"

"Is that honestly what you think of me. How you see me as a one night stand guy and nothing else!" He whipped his head around raising his voice where Rexy made a noise showing some of her back teeth to me. "Owen, I uh wouldn't-" But he cuts me off getting louder where her tail starts swinging back and forth slowly. "No just throw your insults at me, Y/n. I know I've made a bad reputation around the island but all the others were because you wouldn't talk to me. Spare me a glance or time of day and I can't take it!" I slowly try pulling him away from Rexy when her tail moved closer to him where she might knock him to the ground and possibly eat him if I'm not careful. "Owen, keep your voice down please..." He shoves me a little letting some tears slip that finally caused Rexy to swing her giant tail right at him. Without thinking I tackle him to the ground feeling the tip of her tail scrap my back where I screamed out grabbing it as I fall onto his chest. Rexy roared into the sky until I glanced over my shoulder struggling through tears needing her to be calm. "I'm okay, Rexy. Owen won't hurt me...i promise. You're Alpha's fine." Reaching up with my freehand I press my fingers underneath her chin and she never moves her gaze from mine giving me the okay.

Owen was flat on his back with a clear view of the claw mark going down your back. It didn't look too bad but it hurts his heart that he's the cause of it. Whipping my head around slowly my hair falls over my shoulders into his face but I shiver lightly feeling him tuck it behind my ear, green eyes trained on mine perfectly. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I broke up with you. You're the only one for me and that won't change. I love you, Y/n." I grinned down at him resting my hands on either side of him so I'm not putting my whole weight on him. Rexy released a deep breath turning and leaving the scene disappearing off into the paddock. "I love you too. It's just - you promised forever and then walked away. I want you still Owen but only if you're all in for good." I whispered even though we were basically alone now so I sit up and help him up. Once we're standing he dropped on a knee making me gasp when he takes my hands in his. "I'm all in Y/n M/n L/n. This isn't a proposal but a promise to you. I love you, I'll always love and if I'm being honest we were never really done anyway." He smirks until I yanked him up crashing my lips onto his and he immediately responded back with a kiss wrapping his arms around me. "Be real, Grady. You wouldn't know what to do without your T-Rex girlfriend." He grinned shaking his head. "You were already awesome. Training the T-Rex just makes you more badass."

I have Spongebob and Slappy. Spongebob is one of the first miis I added to the game in 2016. I think I only added Slappy last summer.

Spongebob is well established. He went through 2 divorces. He used to be on bad terms with his kids but he managed to finally build a good relationship with them. Who would've thought Spongebob would be a twice divorced deadbeat dad? Just look at him! He's wearing a little sailor suit and playing on his DS!

When I first added him to the game, cat woman from batman got a crush on him. I had to break them up because it was too soon. Still, slappy keeps rizzing up masc girls. It seems to be his thing. I had at least 3 tomboys confess their love for Slappy. I guess they are simply attracted to his orange cat/malewife energy.

My own mii (the look-alike mii when you start the game) also seems to be stalking him but she doesn't seem to befriend him. Somehow that's the most accurate thing of all.

They are asking for another kid but there are too many children on the island so NO.

Engage Kiss totally *brings it*.

A-1 Pictures is on a ROLL lately. After finishing the third season of “Kaguya-Sama: Love is War,” I can hardly believe that they immediately put out both “Lycoris Recoil” AND “Engage Kiss” in the very next seasonal cycle! And IMO? All of these are well worth your time.

I went into "Engage Kiss" knowing shockingly little about it, and I come here today to promote how VERY emotionally invested I got in it. It’s one of those shows where at a certain point, EVERY episode ended on a cliffhanger moment that had me dying to watch what happened next. It worked me up to a point where I was tearing into each new episode as soon as I could squeeze them into my day, even if it meant playing parts of them on my phone while brushing my teeth or something. YEAH, I got addicted to it, and that's always the best feeling with any anime or any TV series in general, I think.

The core trio of Kisara, Shu, and Ayano. Also: The focal love triangle. The initial polycule, if you will.

I think the series’ biggest weakness is that it’s slow to roll out information on the initial status quo. They just sort of drop viewers in blind and let you gradually catch up on what’s going on as they drip-feed context across the first four episodes. So I’m going to try and bypass that problem by giving y’all a vague outline of the setup:

Decades ago, a new ore was discovered on the ocean floor that had the potential to be an amazing new source of energy. Today, an artificial island city has developed here to support the mining initiative. Unfortunately, this city has also developed a problem with monstrous demon attacks, and — cue the sarcasm — I’m sure that the deep mining and the unleashing of demonic forces are totally unrelated. The government tries to cover up evidence of these demons and their attacks while simultaneously keeping a number of PMCs on call to kill the invaders... or, to be more specific, the lowest bidder for each case is sent out to kill them. 

Twelve years ago, one such demon attack blindsided the city, and 28 people were lost. Only one survivor emerged from the site where it happened: A boy named Shu. 

We follow three lead characters: Shu, Ayano, and Kisara. Shu runs an extremely small PMC consisting of just two people. He looks like a real loser from the outside, but those who get to know him come to really respect his dedication to his personal goals and the people he cares about. The only other employee in Shu’s PMC is Kisara, and she’s actually a demon herself! And on top of that, Shu and Kisara are in a relationship! To date, Kisara has possessed enough power to handle almost any kind of OTHER demonic threat that comes into town... but the strength of those threats is rapidly increasing.  And Ayano? She’s the point man for a competing PMC, and she used to be in a relationship with Shu. Now she’s just trying her damnedest to maintain a friendly working relationship with him... despite both of them still clearly struggling with lingering feels.

Why are the demons even here? What really happened to the vanished people from 12 years ago? Why is Kisara willing to fight and kill her own kind? Why is Shu dating a friggin’ demon? All these things will be answered, brand-new questions will arise... and in the interim period, you’ll get some kick-ass action scenes, some frothy relationship/love-triangle humor, and increasingly high-stakes drama.

Kisara is also a one-winged demon, FYI. Eat your heart out, Sephiroth.

Although I found the universe kind of interesting, the humor cute enough, and the action pretty damn cool, none of those traits are enough for me to get seriously invested in a series. What really got me here is the CHARACTERS. There are a bunch of them, ranging from some fun/charismatic supporting players to the big three I just outlined. Two of them especially got under my skin and into my head... but one moreso than the other. 

The lesser of the two? A highly flawed yet weirdly fascinating person — someone that’s willing to make just about any compromise to pursue their own justice. And the other character, the one I really couldn’t shake from my mind? As the series went on, their motivations and actions became so complicated and conflicting that I felt compelled to sporadically sit and ponder what was driving them and what they might decide to do next.

....yeah, I’m clearly dodging revealing too much about them because I don’t want to call out my faves point-blank. I don’t want to raise anyone’s expectations or get them to particularly focus on any given character in the foreground OR background. Anyone who tries it is better coming in with minimal expectations, I think.

And yet... I still want to give you SOME expectations. That’s what my aforementioned summary tried to do. But on top of that, let me offer some additional warnings.

Noteworthy Warnings/Advisements:

Please understand that "Engage Kiss" is essentially a Word Salad Title. By the end of the series, I could kinda see how it could be justified... but the show sure as hell ain't going to give you that justification itself. Don't sit around awaiting for someone to explain to you how they're engaging in kissing or whatever. This is some popcorn eyeglasses shit.

The tone of the series can swing wildly from VERY light to VERY dark. What starts out as a pretty goofy show focused on relationship comedy and financial struggles eventually shifts into something much more dramatic as we escalate the various players' personal motives alongside the increasingly world-threatening stakes.

Content Warning: Along the way, you can expect to see sporadic blood and gore as well as a few episodes containing blatant sexual content (no nudity, however). .......... Oh, and those kissing scenes you only ever see in anime where the people get a string of drool linking their mouths while making out? Mmm-hmm — the saliva-phobic need not apply here. .......... Also? Kisara fronts at being a high-schooler — dressing up like one and even occasionally attending a school — which means our story includes a young adult man dating an (ostensible) high-school girl. And it also includes, via flashbacks, a young adult woman dating an (actual) high-school boy! These relationships would both be quite taboo in the U.S., but if you’ve watched enough Japanese media, you know by now that they don’t really flinch at this at all. Cultural differences and all that. You can either accept that they see the world differently or resume previous disgust; you’ll get no judgement from me either way.

Oh, you might want to know that this is part of a theoretical “mixed-media project.” Said project currently only includes this anime, an ongoing manga that is adapting the anime, and a Square Enix mobile RPG titled “Engage Kill” that is expected to hit devices later in 2023. At least in Japan. I’m not sure if there’s any confirmation of it coming anywhere else, but here’s hoping!

Ayano has MANY reasons why Shu sucks ready to fire off at a moment’s notice. Sadly, this doesn’t change that she’s still sorta hung up on him. As they say, “the heart wants what it wants” — even if it what it wants is dumb as fuck.

By the end of it, I felt like they didn’t quiiiiiiite stick the landing in the finale. It wasn’t the ideal wrapup for my tastes, and that’s partly because it felt like they were setting up one thing until the last couple of eps convinced them to do the OPPOSITE of that. Even so, I definitely wouldn’t say it was a failure of a finale OR a series!  

And when the last scene ended, I found myself STILL very emotionally attached to these characters. Frankly, I'm just a couple steps away from writing shippy fics about some of them. It be like that.

Top 10 YouTube Videos of 2022

I was asked to provide TV/movie recommendations from 2022, and honestly, I don't have a whole lot to say on traditional media this year. Instead, let's dive into something I'm trying to cut back on in 2023 - my YouTube obsession.

I am subscribed to over 500 creators, and I used to try to keep up with all of them. In the past few years I've realized that was a losing battle, especially with the gradual transition from short-form skit content to hour and a half long think pieces. Doesn't prevent me from trying, however, which has been to the detriment of my sanity and my sleep schedule. But now my debilitating addiction can benefit you! Here's a list of the top 10 videos that were released this year.

#10 SethEverman - metal drummer listens to ABBA for the first time

Starting off easy, here's Seth Everman playing drums to "Mamma Mia". I've listened to this dozens of times, it hits so hard.

#9 Scene Queen - Pink Hotel

Scene Queen is the perfect intersection of my musical tastes, blending pop and metal while embodying the antithesis of every pick-me girl. I wish she were around back when I was in college and that asshat Perez Hilton was drawing dicks on Lindsay Lohan's face, then maybe I would have processed my internalized misogyny wayyyy earlier. Also she's unapologetically gay as fuck, which we love to see.

#8 Ted Nivison - I Drove to Every Rainforest Café in North America

I haven't been subscribed to Ted long, but this was my gateway drug. This video is exactly as advertised, and it is a literal ride. As someone who didn't go to a Rainforest Café until I was well into my teenage years, I don't really have the nostalgia Ted clearly rode on for 10k miles in a Toyota Tacoma. But honestly, the Rainforest Cafes are the least interesting part of this masterpiece . Instead tune in for a tale of perseverance that tested a friendship to complete a truly innocuous quest.

#7 Pinely - The MrBeast-ification of Youtube

Onma island is buried a treasure chest.

Orr focuses on how click bait-y spectacle charity videos have overrun the platform, and in the creator's effort to keep high view retention, how they exploit the people they intend to help for internet clout. Its a subject I personally find fascinating as I struggle with consuming true crime content for the same reason - it's hard to shine light on a corrupt organization or violent perpetrator without exploiting the victims in some way.

His follow-up video, The MrBeast-ification of Money, analyzes the influence of these videos on how people perceive wealth and how MrBeast-esque content affects how children consider the value of a dollar. Awesome duo, check out both to get the full picture of Jimmy's influence.

#6 Worthikids - BIGTOP BURGER: DOWN

Back in 2019 before The Rise of Skywalker killed all the goodwill Star Wars had earned in my mind, I stumbled upon this video on twitter and lost my shit. "I will use the force to heal my broken body" is my inner monologue every time I drink coffee. I immediately found them on YouTube and subscribed.

Worthikids is so unbelievably talented, not only animating in their own art style, but recreating the old school stop motion Rankin/Bass aesthetic. Bigtop Burger is an ongoing series about a clown-themed food truck beefing with a zombie themed food truck, featuring the vocal talents of some of my other favorite creators like Chris Fleming and ProZD. It's completely chaotic and about the best thing I've ever seen. It was this video, however, that had me literally crying with laughter. I'm not going to spoil it because I want you to experience it fresh, but Chris' unhinged voice paired with the elastic animation style just fucking kills me.

#5 Todd in the Shadows - The Top Ten '90s Buses

Todd in the Shadows is no stranger to top 10 lists - I look forward to his annual Top 10 Worst and Top 10 Best Songs of the Year videos. When I saw this video show up in my subscriptions feed, I, for sure, thought it was a troll. I should have known better. This is legitimately a top 10 list of '90s busses. The Spice World bus makes an appearance. It's a gem.

Todd is one of my comfort youtubers. Sometimes when I'm working on stuff I'll boot up a Trainwreckords, One Hit Wonderland, or Cinemadonna playlist and just let it ride. His disgruntled analysis, while sometimes I don't always agree with cause musical tastes are unique and varied, is strangely soothing. It comes with side effects like knowing more about Cher and Gregg Allman than I ever wanted to know, like that they were married at all, but you take the good with the bad.

#4 Drew Gooden - I took Ninja's Masterclass and it ruined my life

Drew Gooden is one of the members of the conglomerate of media commentary youtubers that I follow (there are so many, legitimately, I have a problem, so much content, make it stop, I'm sure I'm going to forget some, it's inevitable, I watch too much YouTube, how do I get anything done?), but his analytical nature and sarcastic tone really resonates with me. I particularly enjoyed his retrospective on Lily Singh's talk show that addressed the struggle YouTube creators face when adjusting themselves to fit within the confines of traditional media and expand their audience while trying to keeping their existing fan base. He also has a knack of finding the weirdest movies.

This is one in a series of videos where Drew reviews educational scams provided by content creators. He had previously covered the pains some creators face with maintaining their relatability, and offering online courses seem to be the natural progression of how to transition that online success into corporate dolla dolla billz. It's depressingly hilarious how low-effort these endeavors are, which is only proven when Drew ultimately tries to follow Ninja's expert advice to become a Twitch superstar.

As someone who spent like 450 hours streaming on Twitch this year, Drew's attempt is a great encapsulation of how isolating that experience can be. If you are also a Twitch streamer, this is a must-watch.

#3 münecat - Web3.0: A Libertarian Dystopia

I found münecat a few years ago through other anti-MLM creators because of her thorough coverage of the LuLaRoe shit show. Her videos have only gotten more detailed since then, culminating in this mammoth summary on Web3.0. I have stayed willfully ignorant of all things blockchain since I was forced to listen to some dude talk about mining bitcoin at a party back in like 2017. Münecat has done all the heavy lifting here to get me up to speed on cryptobros pyramid scheme of their very own. Plus, her work always comes with a bonus music video at the end. Score!

Also, because of this gem of a video on Russell Hartley, I now own a "Gaslight me daddy" t-shirt.

#2 Jenny Nicholson - Evermore: The Theme Park That Wasn't

Jenny Nicholson has been one of my favorite creators on YouTube since I found a video of her roasting discount Halloween costumes. What her brand has evolved into is truly remarkable, providing commentary on books, movies, theme parks, fanfiction, and random finds like church Easter plays and whatever the fuck the Hallmark channel was doing on YouTube back in 2016. I now know more about The Vampire Diaries and Bronycon than any adult should. "My horny drawing of Twilight Sparkle is presented upon this long pillow with complete neutrality," lives in my head rent-free. Any topic she covers, whether I have any familiarity with it or not, is well-researched and presented in such a captivating manner that it makes you forget how long you've been watching the video. This one is almost 4 hours long and I've watched it in its entirety more than once.

Evermore is a "theme park" located in Utah that has undergone several changes since its initial announcement back in 2014. This video, which has a longer runtime than The Irishman, goes into acute detail about the man who cooked up the concept, the development process, its lackluster implementation, and the park's current operationally neutered state that leaves it with an extremely unstable future.

I don't know if YouTube is Jenny's main gig or not, but she should 100% be a script doctor or creative consultant. Her feedback is thoughtful and presented with purpose, not just for the sake of roasting (although she's also great at that). I'd want her to be my editor if my writing wasn't garbage lmao.

#1 Defunctland - Disney Channel's Theme: A History Mystery

If you're looking for exceptional quality YouTube content, look no farther than Defunctland. Starting out with videos focused on deprecated theme park rides, over the years they've expanded their repertoire to cover retro television shows, fast-food restaurants, and theme park management. Their series about Jim Henson is legitimately one of my favorite deep-dives on a creative. This documentary, however, may be their best work.

Defunctland has always done a phenomenal job balancing humor, history, and sentimentality in their videos. "Disney Channel's Theme: A History Mystery" is no exception, functioning as a love letter to unsung creatives whose impact is immense, but their identity hidden. By the end of this masterpiece I was crying for the legacy of a person I had no awareness of an hour and a half before. Kevin should be proud of his videos, because in the act of immortalizing the media and experiences that have influenced us the most, what truly stands out is their ability to tell the story in a way that is both effective and emotional.

Keep doing what you're doing, Defunctland. You're the best of the internet.

good morning: august 25

what does my morning look like today? how am i feeling this morning?

i wake up around 7:30 every morning. i feel like my morning routines are fairly the same. i like routine. routines are good. they feel good. but lately “good” doesn’t do me justice. i think i need to step out of my comfort zone. a few days ago i tried switching it up, i woke up early, got on the treadmill for 10 minutes. got my blood flowing. it just wasn’t it. maybe i’m not motivated, or better yet, i’m not disciplined. maybe i just need to wake up early and get the fuck out of my house. 

but this morning seems good. calm. my kid is calm. the weather seems nice. everyday is always a good 75-85 degrees but it’s an island...near the equator...it feels so hot and humid all the time, but who am i to complain? i love it here. i think that 90% of the population on this island take living here for granted...well, not opposed to rent and groceries. who could possibly live here besides the wealthy and the military. i mean, God bless america, am i right? anywho, i meant the free things..like the beach. obviously. it’s great. it’s not everyday you can get up and drive down to dip a toe in some salt water. or feel the warm sand on your skin. it’s not everyday. hell, even living here it’s not like that everyday. this island is where the city meets the beach. here i am...brain dumping again. it feels soooo good though i think it’s what’s been keeping me calm. occupied. i couldn’t even think about 3 other things that i love about myself. i’m boring. 

i can’t say that i love being a mother. every mother should love being a mother but not every mother does. i do. i love it. even though it takes all of me to be a mother. i just can’t be different people. or rather, i can’t be different versions of myself.

my morning routine has been the same lately. when i say i love routine, i don’t know what mental illness that correlates with, but i decided to start my day with a glass of water. it’s not much to a lot of people, but if you know me, you know that i love using water to clean myself, things, i love to swim, but consuming water? i’m bad at. i think starting the day off like this will prevent the worst of the worst with what comes after. the headaches after caffeine. i loooove me my coffee. i can’t help it. some people are addicted to meth, i’m addicted to caffeine. i remember being pregnant and having the worst caffeine withdrawal. i discovered cold brew at the time, too. that’s when it was getting extremely popular. ahhh cold brew, so smooth and rich. drop coffee? it’s fucking crack i swear. but it’s amazing. anyways, i steered clear from any kind of caffeine. and i was like a recovering drug addict. i literally felt my capillaries opening and closing. ITCHING. anyways....water. 

another thing i’ve been doing differently, i’m trying to make my kid more independent. especially with eating. feeding herself. god it’s a mess. but kids are kids. how do we learn if we don’t let things get messy, right?

ive also been on point with my birth control. i think i’ve been having a better relationship with food. i’ve been eating when i’m hungry. i used to just starve myself, but i’ve been doing okay for the most part. i don’t eat much, but i eat. wow drinking a cup of water was a great idea, i’m not even craving coffee lol.

Wow this was a amazing read! I love this authors writing she draws you in and sinks her teeth into you and doesn’t let go until long after the story has ended. This book was dark sexy intense and so exciting it’s full of twists and turns betrayals lies I was literally on the edge of my seat the whole way through! From the amazing characters to the addicting storyline this was a masterpiece! I can’t recommend it enough but check your trigger warnings I’m telling you now this book won’t be for everyone but I however loved it !
