In season 2, in preparation for the Valentine's Ball, Felice decides not to wear the white wig with her outfit.

She has her natural hair big, and curly and out, and stunning. Also, I love that her dress is a dark colour compared to everyone else's pale coloured outfits.

She says to her friends about the wig: "I don't know what to do. I can't wear that. It doesn't feel like me." Madison says, "Isn't that the point, though." Stella says," I think it's really pretty." Felice replies with, "It's not that it's not pretty. That's not the problem. It just doesn't feel right. But it's so weird. Everyone else will wear one."

She wants to be herself and sit in her own beauty, but she is worried that she will stand out by not conforming. Parallel this with her dad in season 3 telling her, "When I started (at Hillerska), I tried to have my own style. Some different cool clothes, big unruly hair....But here, that wasn't an option. Soon, I looked like everyone else."

When how you look, your hair, the colour of your skin, makes you different, conforming to the hierarchy that implies that European standards of beauty are superior, is necessary to have an easier time at Hillerska. According to Poppe, "That's how you win. Play be the rules."

I love how this is followed by Felice going against the rules of Hillerska that you don't snitch on the goings-on of the institution, and being honest. Leaving her conforming dad out of the interview room.

I like to contrast Felice's decision at the Valentine's Ball with Wilhelm painting his face and putting on his wig that makes him look like a traditional Prince. In this scene, he is crying as he dons his Prince apparel. It also 'doesn't feel right'. And it also 'doesn't feel like him'. He has always hated his role as Prince. Even something that should be fun, like playing dress up for a ball that everyone is doing, is not. Because he's not playing a role like everyone else. He is that role, and he hates it.

As to the other characters: August is seen to be really pleased with his reflection in the mirror as a traditional noble (read Prince) role. Sara is caught up in the excitement of being one of the elite girls and playing at being a part of their world. Simon is in his school uniform. He is himself. A 16 year old school boy. He definitely stands out at the ball, but he doesn't care.

Сан-Милуно, раннее зимнее утро. Но в доме Стэнфилдов уже царила суета. Встретив главу семейства, Лидия мило улыбнулась и открыла заднюю дверь такси. Внося внука в дом, Джеффри аккуратно придерживал мальчишку за спину.

- Простите, что его снова пришлось заносить в дом. -уже привычно извинялась Лиди для чистой формальности.

-Это уже традиция. -отшутившись в свой манере Джеф.

Оглядывая пустую гостиную из коридора, Лиди задумалась, а не разбудили ли они главу семейства. -Надеюсь мы не слишком рано и никого не разбудили?

-Не переживай по этому поводу.- мужчина нежно улыбнулся -С появлением Макса весь дом встаёт рано. А когда тут ещё и Рин это что-то.

-Ранние пташки? -за последние три года, Лидия практически не ночевала нормально в доме. Полностью погрузившись в работу, ложилась поздно и вставала когда домочадцы еще спали, лишь изредка пересекаясь с Мэган на кухне.

Тяжело вздохнув, мужчина вспомнил последние ночевки младших внуков -Ага, один встаёт спозаранку, другой ложиться за полночь.

Ностальгически улыбнувшись, девушка посмотрела на мирно сопящего сына -Помнится близнецы были такими же.

Уже собираясь разойтись, Лидия с Джеффри увидели влетающего в гостиную Максимуса, за которым бежала Мэган, стараясь поймать внука.

Схватив мальчишку за руку, женщина буквально спасла от падения на пол мягким местом. -Макси, мы быстренько почистим зубки, умоемся и сможешь пойти поиграть.

-НЕТ! -мальчонка старался всем весом своего маленького тельца не дать бабушке поставить его на ноги. -Паста не вкусная, я не пойду!

-Но зубки надо чистить. -по Мэгон было видно, что она уже вымотана этой беготнёй.

-Нет! Не хочу зубы чистить! Не пойду! -старательно верещал Макс.

Насмотревшись картины, Лиди с улыбкой посмотрела на Джеффри -Теперь я понимаю почему весь дом не спит.

-Нет! Отпусти меня! -оказавшись на руках бабушки, Макс пытался вырваться, но при этом старался не рухнуть на пол.

-Здравствуйте, Мэган.

- Привет, Лиди. -балансируя внуком на руках, Мэган пыталась улыбнуться -Прости, у нас тут зубная катастрофа.

15 минут спустя, Фелисити спустилась вниз и забрала сына умываться, давая возможность матери спокойно поговорить с Лиди. С улыбкой чмокая смуглую щечку, девушка шла в сторону ванной -Так давай не будем нервировать бабушку и пойдём быстренько почистим зубки.

-Но паста… -смотря на маму щенячьими глазками, Максимус старался избавиться от ненавистной процедуры.

-Я достану тебе вкусную, а потом пойдём наряжать ёлку. -зная что сынишка любит капаться в разноцветных шариках, Фей отвлекла его внимание новогодними планами.

-Ёлка!

Приглаживая недавно подстриженное каре, Мэг подошла к "невестке" -Прости за сцену, Макс напрочь не любит утренние процедуры.

-Всё в порядке. -мило улыбнувшись, девушка была рада увидеться с миссис Стэнфилд в привычно домашней обстановке.

По-смотря на часы, Мэг прикинула есть ли у них время поболтать. -Чай будешь? Или кофе?

-На самом деле я бы сразу выдвинулась за Брэдли. -виновата улыбнувшись, Лидия посмотрела на стену с семейными фотографиями -Дети были бы рады проснувшись увидеть папу. -понимая, что даже со всеми стараниями, они не успеют к пробуждению детей, девушка добавила ещё одно дело к списку -Плюс нужно за подарками заехать.

-Поняла. -Мэг пригласила рукой пойти в сторону коридора -Пойдём дам ключи от машины.

-Если что-то нужно купить можете сразу дать список, мы заедем. -Лид хотела хоть чем-то помочь в подготовке к наступающему празднику, из-за того что они прокатаются из города в город почти до 2 часов дня.

-Не стоит, в этом году Фелисити с Ли сами всё подготовят. -с блаженной улыбкой, от осознания что в этом году будет праздновать как гостья а не хозяйка, произнесла Мэган.

Little subtle things that touch on racism in young royals: the 17-18th century costumes for the valentines ball. Not only are the costumes hearkening back to an exclusionary ‘golden age’ the costuming includes makeup that makes the skin appear lighter. We see at least Wille and Maddison in. Having this kind of make up is so so exclusionary - because like the wigs that Felice refuses to wear, to engage with the activity properly non-white students are being tacitly encouraged to lighten their skin and white students are being tacitly encouraged to value whiteness

And yes it’s a fun dress up heritage activity that includes make up for the reenactment purposes - I get that heritage is literally what I’m studying BUT one of the big discussions within the heritage field is the ongoing question of whose heritage is celebrated and why?

For example - it makes no sense for Hillerska to host a 17th Century ball, the school opened in 1901, there is no 17th century heritage of the school, it’s imagined heritage that they are utilising. If the ball was a turn of the 20th century ball (the Edwardian fashion era in English parlance) that would make sense as an engagement with the schools heritage. This heritage may still be racially charged but not as racially charged as the imagined 17th Century heritage ball.

So why 17th C? Well I think the school is invested in training up nobility and royalty, individuals who do have heritage dating back to that period, who are likely to imagine that period as the golden era before the class system began to be (slightly) more equal. Hillerska despite having none of its own 17th C heritage is imagining heritage for its students to help maintain an increasingly shaky class and racial system that has it’s students at the top.

It’s therefore pretty significant that Simon is not in a 17th C costume. He has no 17th C noble heritage and unlike Sara (and Alexander, and Nils) is not interested in pretending that he does.

It is also interesting that Felice, who is on a journey of self acceptance and identity beyond her social climbing white family, only partially dresses in the pretence of 17th C noble glory.

Finally, it is interesting that Wille, desperately does not want to put this costume on, and is crying as he does so. He does not want this awful legacy, it keeps him from Simon and it makes him transform himself into something he doesn’t want to be.
