A closer examination of Fenris and Anders' party banter

There's two particular Anders-Fenris party banter that gets pointed out a lot as them being antagonistic to each other, but upon second readings, they both can seem like genuine attempts at connection:

Fenris: Is there something you want, Anders? Anders: You really don't have the temperament for a slave. Fenris: Is that a compliment or an insult? Anders: I'm just wondering how your master didn't kill you. Fenris: How have the templars not killed you? Anders: I'm charming.

Here, it almost seems like Anders is saying, "You rebelled against your oppressors too, huh? I had to survive by being charming. I just wonder how you did it." It was a moment of acknowledgement and recognition, that Fenris, too, rebelled against the ones who had power over him and survived, just like Anders did.

Fenris: You should have lived in Tevinter. You'd be happier there. Anders: You're probably right. Fenris: There, your magic would be a mark of honor. Apprenticed to the right Magister, you would do well. Anders: Is there a down side? Fenris: Only if you're bothered by owning a few slaves and performing the occasional blood ritual. Anders: So they all do those things? Fenris: Just the ones who don't complain about how powerless and persecuted they are.

And in this banter, it's almost as if Fenris is saying, "No, you aren't like the mages and magisters I met in Tevinter. You're different." All the 'normal' practices of Tevinter like blood rituals and owning slaves ... Fenris knows that Anders would never do that. I'm tempted to even say it was almost a compliment -- Fenris acknowledges Anders' talents as a mage, but also recognizes that Anders has no desire to social-climb, and that is what differentiates Anders from the power-hungry magisters of Tevinter.

Their banter looks like vicious sniping on the surface, but on closer inspection, they really were just a hair's breadth away from making a connection.

This banter from the 'Legacy' DLC drives me insane because it was literally right there. We were so close to a breakthrough.

Anders: When I left the Wardens, I swore I'd never spend another minute in the Deep Roads. Fenris: "Left" sounds like it was a mutual arrangement. Anders: Fine. I ran away. What's it to you? Fenris: Ran away from the Circle, ran away from the Wardens... it sounds like a habit.

(If Hawke is in a romance with Fenris)

Anders: Running away from your family, straight to Danarius. Running away from Danarius, straight to Hawke. Maybe we're more alike than you think.

Anders: And you ran away from Danarius. Maybe we're more alike than you think.

Varric: I've always said so.

If only BioWare's writing had allowed them to explore that common ground and be allies, even friends. They understand each other on a level the other companions couldn't. They recognize themselves in each other, they could have supported one another because both of them know exactly what it means to be constantly on the run, looking for escape, looking for a place to belong to. Not to mention it would have been such a compelling development to their relationship!

But no, for the sake of forced grey morality, where both sides needed to be portrayed as equally good and bad, BioWare needed to use Anders and Fenris as mouthpieces for opposing sides so they couldn't allow the relationship to ever evolve past arguing with each other, despite seven years of companionship and proximity.

The weirdly life affirming thing about fandom and some of the adoration that comes with it, particularly as pertains to real people, is that fans will love all the parts of you. That what is deemed ‘marketable’ by the press release and everything else they left out. If you come from something, fans will keep it alive. A Sam Fender fan away in Nebraska, USA will learn the Geordie dialect to accurately write Sam Fender x reader fanfic. They will keep alive a dialect declining even in Newcastle. As long as someone knows it, it lives on. The more people into it, the more beloved it becomes; it has a resurgence, it carries on. A Kneecap fan in Indonesia whose third language is English decides Irish Gaeilge can be their fourth. The Eurovision fans decided they can learn all of Finnish after being drawn to one song about piña coladas (and the super endearing Käärijä!)

Fandom is so much more than some base lowly shit to be embarrassed about that people like to reduce it to. It’s a powerful mode of culture. It’s so much more than about writing ‘your silly little stories about your pathetic men’; fandom is the reason American Blur fans flew thousands of miles overseas to be at Wembley last summer. Fandom is checking your IG stories after that gig and seeing that other well-loved musicians also have the same story as you because they were at that gig too. It is months later hearing Grian Chatten from Fontaines D.C. say that part of their new song was inspired by going to that Wembley show, and knowing exactly what he meant by that.

It is about shared cultural moments, it’s about the realisation that nothing is ever strictly in the past, and that we are sharing and creating culture in the now. I don’t know where I’m going with this, I was just struck by the connection between culture and pop culture. Don’t let people tell you they’re different worlds, I suppose

Personal opinion time: The Fenris and Anders dynamic in DA2.

One common theme I've seen stated is that Anders is on a decline in his development, while Fenris' development is positive. Therefore they can't get along. Another post I saw recently stated that Anders is on a destructive path, while Fenris is not.

Since I'm still in my pretty little world where Anders and Fenris learn to get along, I'm adding my statement to this.

Anders and Fenris are on the same path but at different points.

They both start out with only caring for their personal freedom. Anders doesn't organize a mage revolt in the Circle, he runs. Fenris isn't fighting for other slaves, he runs.

Then Anders smuggles out individual mages from the Gallows in Kirkwall, shifting his focus from himself to mages in the Gallows. Fenris is still in his individual phase in Kirkwall, he doesn't even like to connect with other elves. But according to the comics, he spends his time after Kirkwall near the Tevinter border, attacking slavers and freeing slaves.

Anders, at some point, realized that his mage underground actions change nothing about the system. I think Fenris will get to that point too. No matter how many slavers he kills, it changes nothing about the system in Tevinter. He'll probably skips the step of trying to petition the powers that be for years with letters, like Anders did, because I can't see Fenris being patient enough for that. But he will realize that he has to do something bigger for actual change.

Change is always revolutionary. Oppressors don't give up their power without force. At some point, Fenris will have to decide if he wants real change for Tevinter. At some point, Fenris will have to cause his own explosion.

I have this song stuck in my head lately (it’s Denial by James Marriot super good you should check it out) and there’s some banger lines in here that are just begging me to write a Fenders fic inspired by it…

“I’m not trying to read you, but it’s all I’ve ever known, if you insist on talking with your hands who am I to tell you no?” (Both of them needing to read other people because of the abuses they experienced from their pasts)

“How can we speak with all our clothes on the floor?”

“Say what you need and you can stay for awhile. Say what I like so I can stay in denial.” (Hello?? Them saying what needs to be said to scratch the itch but never saying more because they both want to live in denial that they have very real feelings. Why change their dynamic when this is working FINE thank you and if feelings are involved then they might lose this safe, weird, confusing thing they have going on)

“So just hypothetically, will you be the death of me? Do you kiss me so my lips will bleed?” (both of their personal quests of putting the other in possible danger but wanting the others support. and both of them being there for the other because theyre NOT about to let them do it alone and no its not because theyre in love jk they totally are)

I just have super big feelings about a story that features these two having hate sex that quickly becomes enemies with benefits that quickly becomes them being actual friends to them… you know… stopping for two seconds to talk their shit out while their clothes are on and them realizing oh hey, I actually love you?? When the fuck did that happen??

I just think it could be kinda neat 👉👈 (and if anyone else wants to write this for me instead you’re absolutely free to 🤣)

MWII Operator Headcanons: Kortac edition

Fenders Narrative Symmetry

Ok wait sorry if someone pointed this out already but is anyone else just fascinated by how neatly Fenris and Anders’ arcs parallel one another?

As children - Anders keeps trying to run away. He’s alone, and he’s trying to survive. He doesn’t do it for anyone else, he’s escaping from people who chase him down, hurt him and imprison him.

Fenris actively chooses to fight his oppressors (admittedly within their limitations.) He sacrifices himself and his own chance at freedom for the sake of others, and willingly allows his body to be permanently changed, giving him strange and unusual powers.

As adults - Fenris runs away. He’s alone, he doesn’t take anyone with him. He’s trying to survive and he’s escaping from people who chase him down, hurt him and try to enslave him.

Anders chooses to fight his oppressors. He willingly allows his body to be permanently changed, giving him strange and unusual powers, in order to fight for the freedom and safety of others.

So this ask is mostly prompted by my random binge of your dragon age tag. But what I always thought was interesting about Anders and Fenris specifically is that unlike a lot of the companion clashes in Dragon Age games where I thought the conflict was poorly articulated, I remember that something about the random dialogue both of them said at various points in the game made me want to lock both of them in a room together and force them to actually argue out there pointsinmoredetailwhenI1stplayed

god I know. their dynamic is just...there's so much there, and so much Valid Points honestly on both sides (I said what I said) and so much anger and pain and trauma...I feel like the thing about the Anders and Fenris conflict in Dragon Age 2 is that it really is one of those things that feels born out of people with conflicting traumas who don't really recognize that's what's going on, and the more they push up against each other's bruises the less inclined either of them is to try to understand where the other person is coming from.

I'm just...obsessed with the way that for Fenris and Anders both of them are, essentially, seeing the other as an abuse apologist for the abuse that they themselves suffered. Fenris perceives Anders as defending the mages who directly ran the system that enslaved and tormented him; Anders perceives Fenris as defending the abuses of the Chantry and the Templars outside of Tevinter.

on this playthrough that I'm on in particular...I think one of the interesting things was spending a lot more time with Fenris and Bethany in the same party, because the way Fenris talks with her about mage rights is so very different from the way he talks to Anders.

Anders: You ever going to stop harping on the mages here? Fenris: No. Anders: They aren't what you saw in Tevinter. Fenris: The moment they are free, mages will make themselves magisters. Anders: They're slaves! You should want to help them. Fenris: I don't.

with

Fenris: You know, you cannot wish the Templars away. Bethany: I can try. Fenris: Is the Circle here truly so terrible an option? Bethany: Do you really have to ask that? Fenris: You would be kept safe from others as well as yourself, and they would be kept safe from you. Bethany: I... didn't ask for this. Fenris: Nobody asks for their fate.

and it's true that there's an element of Bethany being a "good mage" - but she is still a mage, and an apostate, but the tenor of their conversations is still much more reasonable - and I think part of that is about the way that Bethany's rhetoric isn't grating against that aspect of Fenris's experience.

and I find that deeply compelling about Anders and Fenris's relationship! that they are talking pretty much directly against each other, and that comes directly from the ways in which they've both suffered institutional abuse.

anyway this has all been long and rambling and the point is mostly "I love this character dynamic and the fact that everyone involved is suffering from severe ptsd and a history of dehumanization and the ways in which they dehumanize each other in response." love that.

This is fairly rubbish (and also late) but I just learnt I could do it and this line from Sam Fender’s Seventeen Going Under always makes me think of Theon. A lot of interesting things have been written already about Theon’s propensity for grinning, for laughing when others might be sombre or respectful, for holding his own secret jokes but I love all that is summed up in Fender’s lines:

So many of Theon’s battles are fought far from the field of War and so sometimes a grin might protect you as well as any grey goose feather can. The fact that other characters recall it so vividly give his smiles a kind of half immortal power. As readers we invest too, in everything his smile might hide or hold or reveal; that dark dread of Ice, a fancy for his best friend’s recently widowed mother, his cruelly broken teeth.

And Fender admits that even though a grin can be armour you might also end up buried in their humour.

The Merrill Sessions - Ch. 7: Justice

Summary: Merrill has become something of a community figure in the Alienage. People come to her for help; to learn about the traditions of the Dalish or, sometimes, simply to talk. Recently, she has acquired a kitten. Anders has been keeping more and more to himself. He is working himself ragged in his clinic, his spirits are weighed down by the problems that plague Kirkwall, and his temper is growing ever shorter. He needs help that he isn't asking for. Madeline Hawke. Mad Maddie, or sometimes just Mads. A nickname she’s had since before she knew them, but one she’s only grown into. She embodied it when they first met — a madness that broke like crashing waves against the ragged shores of Anders’ own. Fierce, unstoppable, angry. Washing up like so much debris with the rest of the refugees from Ferelden’s blight, crashing straight into the stone of Kirkwall with nothing but an angry brother and a big honking blade at the end of her poorly disguised staff. She fell into a bed in Anders’ clinic — bleeding, and half covered in blood that wasn’t her own — on her second day in the city. She fell into Anders’ bed, naked and howling and laughing for the thrill of it, on the third. He’s loved her since the moment he laid his amber eyes on her bright blues; most people do. Um grande e feliz ano novo

Truthfully, I went out of my way to work on both of their POVs after a bit. I started all in Anders' POV with my first fic though because the story was very tongue-in-cheek and Anders had the temperament for that. After a while, it was much easier to do both of their POVs. Now I find it hard to decide who I'd rather tell it from, because both have very intriguing POVs. I agree though that most Fenders fans start as Anders fans and *most* Fenders fics I see tend to be from Anders' POV.

I actually started out as more of a Fenris fan.  I loved loved LOVED Anders in awakening, but I admit that I was disappointed with some of the directions they took his character in DA2, and I didn’t like his romance with Hawke much at all.  I wasn’t crazy about the Fenris romance either though, which is why I didn’t start reading FenHawke fics and instead gravitated toward Fenders.  They just bickered so much I figured there had to be fic about these two… oh that’s cute the ship name is called Fenders… I’ll just read a couple- HOOKED!!!  It really took me getting into Fenders and seeing all these beautiful fully fleshed out characterizations of Anders in fics to get me to stop bitching about how all the fun had been sucked out of Anders’ DA2 character and start thinking about him and his motivations more deeply.  Then I fell in love with him again

I get that about having the character tell you who’s going to tell the story.  When I wrote ‘For Want of a Favor’, it had such an irreverent tongue in cheek tone that it simply HAD to be Anders, and every time I even tried to put in a section of Anders’ POV in ‘To Chase Away the Cold and Dark’ is simply was not working, it had to be Fenris ;)
