do not go and try and find this person i cropped out their username for a REASON dont be a DIPSHIT.

I think the problem with dust and fern (from my own judgement of the fandom discussion and the books) is that dust was ferns MENTOR. he had a lot of access to her and power over her. she also got pregnant almost immediately after she was made a warrior with dustpelts kits which is also weird!! also dont forget that dustpelt is mean to literally everyone but ferncloud since shes made his apprentice, which is a cute dynamic when it doesnt involve the age gap and power dynamic. thats also. weird. hot take but maybe if an adult is really awful to everyone but a you as a minor, butters you up and treats you better than literally everyone else, you should run. just a thought.

the other gaps are also weird, don't get me wrong, but dustpelt and ferncloud stand out in this regard because well. the circumstances. if ferncloud were a warrior when she and dustpelt were courting each other and dustpelt wasnt her mentor it wouldnt be an issue, but because of the added context of what i mentioned before... the implications dont feel right. and it isnt right. just because there are worse relationships doesnt mean this one isnt weird either.

Okay so a convo made me remember that Icecloud and Foxleap become apprentices 4-5 moons after the three, which means Ferncloud either had four litters so the three could nurse while also having kits so much younger than them, or she just so happens to have milk despite not having kits OR her last litter was really held back. Mostly bringing this up because obviously Squilf and Leaf still can't nurse the three in BB and I was curious if Ferc was still going to nurse them since I know you gave away her last litter or if someone else will do that or if there's a definite answer for this detail yet.

Daisy did it! Her kits were recently weaned, but Sorreltail at the time was nursing FOUR kittens. That's a lot for one suckler to handle, so Daisy would help out which kept her milk coming.

So Daisy has it handled. Ferncloud is still reeling from horrifically losing THREE children in a short period of time. At this moment in time, she didn't feel ready for more.

But, anyway! Foxleap and Icecloud are NOT DustFern kittens in BB. They were shuffled. This is because Ferncloud has waaaay too few surviving kittens while Brightheart and Sorreltail exploded the gene pool. Their kits in BB are;

Ferncloud is the Educator of ThunderClan until her death in TBC. She lives long enough to confront her little brother, Ashfur, who is now from a younger litter. Dustpelt died in the Battle of the True Eclipse, while defending his last litter from Dark Forest warriors.

Additionally, Spotfur and Duststripe (prev. Sorrelstripe) are now Birchfall's kittens, in trade for Dovewing and Ivypool to go into the Firekin family. Toadstep is also still alive; the husband of Lionblaze.

Lilyheart hasn't had any kittens yet, though. I'm still holding on to Leafshade and Honey...something i forgot her name. ThunderClan is already pretty full of cats and she really didn't need to have them so young. Plus, she got seriously traumatized from how Seedpaw died, and she's the sort of mature person to realize she doesn't want to be responsible for young lives when that's still affecting her.

Snowbush, Ambermoon, and Dewnose all still exist, but were adopted to other couples! They're going to show up in other Clans. Cloud and Bright kept a single kitten from each litter.

Foxleap is probably going to be younger than he is in-canon, because I feel like he often gets lost in the massive Po3 Apprentice Generation. So, he'll be somewhere between Po3 and OotS, interacting with Dovewing and Ivypool as they grow up.

Icecloud, also shuffled in age, is also going to end up with a bigger role in AVOS-era stuff, he's transmasc and a fast friend of Alderheart when he joins ThunderClan after being raised by his mother Jessy as a kittypet. Him and Lilyheart make up Alderheart's misfit friend group.

(In general I think ThunderClan feels less bloated if the births are spaced out better.)

ThornRat (Thornclaw x Ratscar) Dark Forest trainee pairing. They're also both old enough to remember the Old Forest . The whole dynamic I have in mind is Thornclaw being rather oblivious to his sexuality and also being a huge fucking hypocrite (he's one of the more conservative warriors of TC, ironically). Ultimately his relationship with Ratscar, if you can even call it one, is doomed from the start and Ratscar is stuck yearning for someone that's not worth pursuing for multiple reasons.

BrambleFern (Bramblepaw x Fernpaw) I specify -paw because I see them as a bit of a tragic pairing where it doesn't end up working out because Dustpelt swoops right in and inserts himself in Bramblepaw's place. Also, in the context of my rewrite, Brambleclaw is the one to run away to ShadowClan instead of Tawnypelt so whatever spark he and Fernpaw had going never gets to go anywhere. I imagine they're still friends but have some moments of 'what if' every now and then.

BrindleFlint (Brindleface x Flintfang) Honestly I just wanted to give Ashfur and Ferncloud a father that already existed in the series and also didn't fuck up the family tree any more than it already is. I think I got this idea from someone else but I can't exactly remember who - but it's a very interesting concept considering the events of the first arc and how Flintfang was still alive for the events that happened (according to Tigerstar's Fury and Blackfoot's Reckoning). I headcanon that Ferncloud is named after her aunt Fernshade, too. Additionally, in the anthro AU, their story is a lot sadder but that's another story...

LongWind (Longtail x Runningwind) Childhood friends to almost-lovers! They're around the same age and would've definitely trained together. As mentioned in my HalfOne family tree post, they had a budding interest but it was cut short by Runningwind's death. Sad :(

IvyBreeze (Ivypool x Breezepelt) This one is just funny. "You wanna kiss me so bad it makes you look stupid" kind of shit. Breezepelt would be fucking fuming over it because he doesn't want to be like his dad.

HalfDove (Half Moon x Dove's Wing) Another one that's mostly in the context of my rewrite! I'm imagining it's very one-sided since I also love HalfJay, but it's a very complicated thing where Jay's Wing is very focused on saving their colony and too scatterbrained to really put any serious commitment to Half Moon (something he tells her explicitly, but she pursues anyways). Dove's Wing is embarrassed of her crush and knows it was never meant to be, not only because she's a prophecy cat but also because Half Moon doesn't even like her that way.

IceApple (Icewing x Applefur) Another Dark Forest Trainee pairing! I have a lot of these because I got attached to them. Not my only Applefur ship but certainly one that's kinda fun to think about. I don't have much to say about these two sadly but I thought it was a cute idea that I could maybe build off of later.

MinnowMouse (Minnowtail x Mousewhisker) I don't actually think this one is that much of a rare pair, I've seen a lot of ppl talk about this but I was kinda running out of ideas since there's a lot of characters idgaf about sorry LOL anyways this one is based on a scene in Dark River and the fact they were both Dark Forest trainees in their adulthood.

Are there any popular ships you dislike/don’t get?

I can vibe with most everything but I have a particular bone to pick with most any Squirrelflight x man of the week pulled out of a hat. And more particularly I have a bone to pick with ShrewSquirrel. Truly cannot pick a more random man in her proximity.

I derive much iconocastic glee from making him an Ashfur type. I have a fic where (part of) the premise is that Bramblekit died in the TPB fire and such Ashfur is shuffled into his role and Shrewpaw into Ashfur's. Something just tickles me about Shrewpaw being bitter about losing the girl he likes to his uncle.

Alternatively, I like to use author fiat to make them textually, explicitly siblings just out of spite. Within my default polyamory worldbuilding I just make Firestar/Sandstorm/Dustpelt/Ferncloud a nest unit, which makes Shrewpaw and Squirrelflight myempfurr (non-birth parent siblings). Ship THAT fuckers, I fucking dare you.

The Genetic Journey of Two Sisters: an Analysis of ThunderClan’s Gene Pool

Flashnose and Daisytoe made their debut in Goosefeather’s Curse, and are revealed to be sisters born to unknown parents. Although these sisters fade into the rest of ThunderClan’s old history, their genetics encompass the entirety of ThunderClan, bleeding into two other Clans. Here is an analysis of their profound genetic impact, starting with Flashnose. (Cats who’s names are red have kits)

Flashnose + unknown tom have a single daughter together: Swiftbreeze. Later in life, Swiftbreeze and Adderfang have five children: Leopardfoot, Patchpelt, Redtail, Spottedleaf, and Willowpelt. Leopardfoot and Pinestar have Tigerstar, Mistkit, and Nightkit. Patchpelt and Goldenflower have Swiftpaw & Lynxkit, while with Robinwing, he has Longtail. Willowpelt, with unknown toms, have Darkstripe & Graystripe. With Whitestorm, she has Sorreltail, Rainwhisker, and Sootfur.

→ Tigerstar and Goldenflower have Brambleclaw and Tawnypelt, and with Sasha, Tadpole, Hawkfrost and Mothwing. Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight have Sparkpelt, Alderheart, Dandelionkit, and Juniperkit. This wraps up Flashnose’s genetic line, moving us into Daisytoe’s genetic line.

Daisytoe and Rooktail had Moonflower and Goosefeather. Moonflower and Stormtail had Bluestar and Snowfur. Bluestar and Oakheart had Mistystar, Stonefur, and Mosskit. Mistystar and Blackclaw had Reedwhisker, Primrosepaw, Pikepaw, and Perchkit. Snowfur and Thistleclaw had Whitestorm. Whitestorm and Brindleface had Ferncloud, Ashfur, Elderkit, and Tulipkit. With Willowpelt, he also had Sorreltail, Rainwhisker, and Sootfur. Ferncloud and Dustpelt had Spiderleg, Shrewpaw, Birchfall, Larchkit, Hollykit, Foxleap, and Icecloud. Spiderleg and Daisy had Toadstep and Rosepetal. Birchfall and Whitewing had Dovewing and Ivypool, who’s mates & kits were previously mentioned.

Although Daisytoe and Flashnose’s bloodlines began separately, they converge at certain points (i.e. Whitestorm x Willowpelt, Tigerstar II x Dovewing) to form an extensive genetic pool that is responsible for 30/46= 65% of the current ThunderClan population (as of Wind) & 6/30= 20% of the current ShadowClan population. Holy shit.

I’d add Robinwing x Fuzzypelt as an honorable mention, but given the fact that their son (Dustpelt) and their granddaughter (Ferncloud) have kits, their line merges with Daisytoe’s since her great-grandson is Whitestorm, who’s also Ferncloud’s father. Alternatively, we could focus on Frostfur, but since both of her sons took mates from Flashnose’s genetic line, their entire family line is one with Daisytoe & Flashnose’s.

Times like this make me feel very fortunate that certain information was retconned. If the fact that Redtail & Brindleface had Sandstorm remained canon, this would make Squirrelstar, Leafpool, Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Hollyleaf all related to Flashnose. Which raises that ThunderClan percentage from 65% to 76%. This would also make Lionblaze and Cinderheart related.

Seeing how much ThunderClan grew from these pair of sisters is always a “wow” moment for me. Their spirits have likely faded from StarClan’s ranks, but I can’t help but wonder if they ever looked down on their descendants and felt proud of how big their families have grown.

I’ve never seen the exact percentages before that’s absolutely wild. It’s insane how these one off characters that no fan would really remember otherwise, let alone remember they are sisters, have ultimately become the root of most of the current ThunderClan incest problems.

Fern x dust family character designs

Finished ferncloud and dustpelt’s family finally lol. This took a while because there were 9 cats in this family which is more than others I’ve done. I have done designs for this family in the past but I wanted to update the designs and just overall make better drawings of them. My favourite out the designs is probably Foxleap’s, I think his design had the best change from the old one. But I also am quite happy with the drawing of larchkit, she’s adorable lol.

DustCloud (cute name): Was going to say that I didn't ship it when I first saw this ask come in a bit ago, but it was because I hadn't thought about it, and now that I've thought about it I ship it.

What made you ship it? I thought about them together for like two seconds and I liked it. Bully x guy who he bullied who ends up being bigger than him maybe? Also Dustpelt a great option for the tom who Brightheart gets Cloudtail to hook up with.

What are your favorite things about the ship? Two tuff toms >:3 I feel like it's pretty flexible in dynamic, too. You could do the aforementioned bully -> uh oh he's bigger than me now, you can have them as bros who kiss, you can have some stuff driven by Brightheart and Ferncloud. They're both tough and outspoken I feel like they'd hype each other up.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I forget how much they interact in TNP but I have to imagine that Dustpelt was pretty mean to Cloudpaw, and I think that adds some good ~spice~.

BreezeCrow: You know I ship it.

What made you ship it? Angsty parent/child who have a bad relationship and make up through hardship and trauma? I never had a chance.

What are your favorite things about the ship? I love some canon where part of their making up is like, "I can't really see you as a father/son but I could see you as a tom." And you know they are both soooo awkward about everything for a while. Crowfeather has always been a blusher and I assume Breezepelt takes after him in that regard too. Also throwing Heathertail in there still is great. HeatherBreezeCrow dynamic is great.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I don't know what an unpopular opinion looks like here. Is it unpopular to say that you could reasonably fit a casual thing for them into the canon without having to cut an AU out for them?

Ooooo Rosetail as a sunstar kit is such an awesome idea. Sunstar should’ve had kits (hell even had Thistle be Sun’s in my au) and Rosetail as his daughter is so cute. Also, love the growing hc of Rose being RedSpottedWillow’s mom, it just fits.

Random Dustpelt x Eglantine family head canon

Fercloud would tease Dustpelt on his hots for owls due to overhearing him mutter in his sleep. He would then counter back by calling out on her crush on a shadowclan cat.

Soren is chill about Eglantine dating Dustpelt, but does warn him not to break her heart.

Ravenpaw when meeting Eglantine straight up said to her "Ah. Nice to meet my brother's dream girl." Dustpelt: RAVENPAW!

Dustpelt made a mistaken Gylfie as Soren's kid when she was in fact his wife.

Ashfur was bewildered when Dustpelt left the clan to be with Eglantine. When Dustpelt explain it was to keep her and his kids safe and some comfort from Cloudtail, Daisy and Ferncloud, he come to accept it.

Daisy (Daisy's become Ashfur mate.) challenged Eglantine to scrap a couple of times.

Dustpelt upon meet Coryn and Kalo, wise crack that he share the same taste as his aunt and uncle.

Kludd and Nyra would be disgusted with the fact that Eglantine would "taint her pure blood line" by taking a cat as her mate.

Their kids are gryphons each named after a flower related to dreams- Wisteria, Iris, and Hycinth

Eglaintine received a bandanna from Barley .

Brightheart, Sandstorm, and Eglantine found a human skeleton. This triggered some bad memories for the owl.

like the changes one could do with this... thistleclaw neglecting his daughters in favor of his son... bluefur's first apprentice being her own niece... frostfur and brindleface figuring out what thistleclaw is doing to spottedpaw and beating his ass...

I hate how most people in the fandom have such a double standard in ships, everyone hates Dustpelt x Ferncloud because it’s obvious how Dust was seeking out a literal child at the time and pretty much immediately impregnated Fern after she became a warrior. But almost everyone just loves Tigerheartstar x Dovewing even though Tiger is a piece of shit and how he also dated Dovewing WHILE SHE WAS ALSO STILL AN APPRENTICE. So I feel like Tigerheartstar should also be considered a gr**mer just like Dustpelt and It kinda sickens me how no one ever noticed this

Yeah I do consider him that

TigerDove is just DustFern 2.0. Naive apprentice gray she cat with green eyes falls for with a young dark tabby with amber eyes bad boy type. The young dark tabby encourages and instigates the questionable dynamic with the apprentice. The tabby dotes on his child love and continues to do so once the two are both adults. I think the key differences are 1) Fernpaw was younger than Dovepaw when this all started, and 2) As far as we have seen, Dustpelt didn’t actively date Fernpaw.

But both situations are both still unbelievably gross and it’s baffling to me the number of times I’ve seen justification for oots TigerDove because of one or both of these explanations

1. Dovepaw was almost a warrior (she wasn’t. Absolutely not. She was still at least two moons away from being a warrior when this all started and that’s without the implied crush on her Tigerheart had since he met her in the fourth apprentice)

2. Tigerheart had only just become a warrior (there was no mention of him getting his warrior name recently and Flametail was already established with his medicine cat name by the time the fourth apprentice came around, which leads me to believe Tigerheart was a warrior for at minimum one moon before the fourth apprentice started. One thing that is undeniable though and not speculation is that he was a warrior whole Dove was still a kit).
