I’m so glad you asked and I’m about to be so extra.

This fandom is beyond talented and I have many favourites. So I might as well make this an official Prefer-to-be-vilified Wenclair Fic Rec Masterlist… post (name could use some work but you get the idea).

I’m going to try to remember/link all my favourites but I’ll probably (definitely) forget some. (summary) The soul bond mechanic in Double Life comes along with an interesting side effect that Grian fails to mention, leaving Etho feeling dizzy within a day of the game starting. Joel seems perfectly content to use it to his advantage and Etho can't bring himself to care. --- SmallEtho in the Double Life setting where the soul bond doesn't just make them share pain but also pleasure. Plot generally follows Session 1 and Session 2 with some rearranging of events and conversations to make the plot flow a bit better. I wrote this in the span of 6 hours without a break and ended up with almost 12k words that is almost completely smut. Seriously, there's like one scene of actual plot, so make of that what you will.

I saw this question floating around and thought it fascinating so WOE inquiry be upon ye:

If you had to pick 5 fics you’ve written to make a “crash course” and sum up your writing personality, which would they be?

This is so sweet to ask, thank you 😭 I love a chance to ramble.

The first one has gotta be the intro to Virelan Lavellan, who hadn't been fully formed yet in my brain by this point. I'd wanna be felled by you, held by you (fuel the pyre of your enemies) is a rambling Hozier reference used as a pretty cover for primal kink fade sex. I just really like making beautiful smut and using it for character revelations.

Another smut as character study is this fic that forms little vignettes around bits of canon banter between Solas and Blackwall. Lay Down Your Armour was my case for the Blackwall x Solas ship as an example of two similar men finding refuge in each other. It was one of the works that really cemented my love for Solas rarepairs.

Another rarepair I love is Solas x Iron Bull, and I got to explore that with King's Gambit — it's another pairing built around character studies of two liars, replete with a drake fight, philosophy talk surrounding Bull becoming Tal Vashoth, and also gay sex so yay!

Continuing on with rarepairs, as well as vignettes built around canon banter, I used actual lines from the game to make a case for a romance between Cassandra and Solas. My life is like the dust (that hides the glow of a rose) is smut free (I know, crazy right?) and chock full of romance, including candlelit evenings reading together, a dance among flowers, and poetry.

Finally, I just really love crafting atmosphere and writing introspection, and Solas in the Temple of Dirthamen is prime material for that. I wrote this little one shot, in our eternity, only darkness reigns, to explore Solas's thoughts while exploring the temple of the young Evanuris he locked away — maybe one he'd even considered his friend, seeing as how his statue guards the temple's entrance.

Theme Songs

Just put up chapter 33 of Beskar Doll overnight and working on chapter 18 of Lavender as we speak, but it got me thinking about the theme songs of these characters (because I listen to a lot of music as I write!) Here are the songs I think encapsulate the main characters of these fics :D

Beskar Doll

Doll - Little Girl Gone: She's tough, she's skilled and she comes back stronger every time you knock her down. First time I heard this song I was like "OMG that's Doll" especially when she gets her blaster back after selling it on Garqi and she goes hunting the general on Jakku.

Notable line: I like your blood on my teeth just a little too much

Din - Breathless: I feel like Din has been hunting his whole life - not for quarries but for love and belonging. It's why he latched onto Grogu the way he did and it's why, once he understood who Doll really was, he latched onto her, too. He defined himself as being a loner for so long, he now needs to hold the ones he loves close and is breathless without them.

Notable line: You leave me breathless, when you close the door It feels just like you took the air out of the room with you

Couple's Song - I'll Come Running: Even before they liked each other, they had each other's backs. Hurt one and the other will be there. Separate them and they'll find each other again. They're always running toward the other, whether they really know it or not.

Notable line: If he hurt you Tell me I'll kill the man Gladly

Lavender

Kid/Doc - Sweet Disposition: Her defining trait is that she is soft where Joel is sharp. She has not let the horrors of the world change her because she insists on finding the soft and sweet and beautiful everywhere she can and embracing those things and she does so unapologetically. Everything she does - her work, the way she cares for those around her, the way she fixes things to keep them around - she does to hold onto the things that make life worth living.

Notable line: Oh, reckless abandon Like no one's watching you

Joel - NFWMB: I mean, does it even need to be said? If so, Bill said it best: "That's why men like you and me are here: We have a job to do. And God help any motherfuckers who stand in our way." Even when he's TRYING to hate Doc, he will still kill anyone who looks at her sideways. And we love him for it.

Couple's Song - Daylight: These two are two sides of the same coin. They both suffered horrific loss and trauma and have both ended up where they are because of how they responded to that loss and that trauma. As they work their way back together, that shared experience will bring them closer instead of tearing them apart like it has so far.

Notable line: Try to follow your light, but it's nighttime Please don't leave me in the end

Loved all of your Hozier posts. Do you associate which of his songs to the Black siblings?

I associate a fair number of Hozier songs with Sirius, particularly songs about loving people intensely (and this can be seen as platonic or Romantic).

"I'd tell them, "Put me back in it"- Francesca.

Sirius would go to hell and back for his loved ones and he'd do it again. On a similar theme, this reminds me of how he escapes Azkaban (living death) to protect Harry:

"No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her" - Work song

Sirius is self destructive in the way he loves and it reminds me of this lyric:

"Each day, you'd rise with me Know that I would gladly be The Icarus to your certainty Oh, my sunlight, sunlight, sunlight Strap the wing to me Death trap clad happily With wax melted, I'd meet the sea..." - Sunlight

For other members of the family:

The duplicity in Talk reminds me of Regulus realising he's been tricked by Voldemort. In the song, the verses are full of flowery, poetic language whereas the chorus reveals the speakers' true intention:

"I won't deny I've got in my mind now all the things we'd do So I'll try to talk refined for fear that you find out how I'm imaginin' you" Talk

Bellatrix's love for Voldemort reminds me of NFWMB and particularly this line (I even have a fic with the same name):

After the war begins, it is just Helaena and Elayne having the worst days of their lives.

Wade's snoring echoed through the thin walls as he stood there, his body begging for a bit of sleep. Even if his mind refused to shut off. Images of you played through his head on a loop. The past was shadowed in pain, memories dipped in a venom he once wished would kill him eventually. Yet seeing you yesterday - a version that remained untouched by the depravity of what already happened to him - launched him back into a time that never seemed to be very far behind him.

"You weren't there! And they needed you."

Silver ebbed from his knuckles as he faced the window - eyes shut and chest heaving. There was no question the sweat came from the humidity in the air. The cold chill along his spine however stemmed from you.

"You're not the Wolverine Logan. You're just a disappointment."

He fought the snarl that worked it's way up his throat. A heavy pounding began to form at the front of his head. A drum he couldn't tear himself away from.

"Live with that."

"Tell him it wasn't my fault!" You bit down on the inside of your cheek until copper flooded your mouth. "Tell him to let me go!"

His chuckle wasn't of amusement but disdain. Squeezing his hand, he effectively cut off the man's airflow as he turned to you with a soft grin. All the anger, all the seething hatred, would never be faced at you. Logan felt his heart ache at the fear in your eyes - the blatant shakiness of your hands as you hugged the blade against your chest for protection.

He made you feel safe in ways that no one else could. Perhaps that's why you fell for him so quickly.

"What do you say baby?" His voice was hoarse from shouting, ragged enough to curl around your heart and appease the anxiety growing there. "Should I let him go?"

"No." You knew your voice shook yet you said the word anyways with narrowed eyes and a bitter heart.

Things about my ocs that won't make sense till later because I wanted to gush about them:

• Seneca Dubois is gonna rip all y'all's hearts out within the first five minutes of reading about him. This is the opposite of his intent. He thinks he's competent because he has skills but skills and talent don't negate fledgling status. He's a tall babe from New Orleans so have fun reading his lines in a Louisianan accent.

• Eden is just a feral creature that I released onto all the characters for kicks, but he is wise. Eden runs entirely on instincts, and it works.

• Orion is baby. He's just good. He's stupid, but his heart's made of gold. He's only got two brain cells but by god is Otis gonna try to teach him about Elysia. Remember at the end of the cleansing when Otis left Vlad to turn Snow by himself to go help a fledgling fend off some slayers? That fledgling was Orion.

• Xavier thinks he's made of nothing but sharp edges to scare people away but that's a lie, he's a soft bitch. He is 80% heart and 20% old vampire. A cool grandpa. Oh, and he's also upholding one of the oldest autonomous regions in the Elysian world, keeping it out of reach of the Parisian Council, who claim the area but cannot enforce any law there. This region extends a few miles beyond the entirety of the city Marseille. He runs the second largest city in France.

• Wren is actually quite competent and clever, he just plays it off like he's just a ditzy fledgling. He and D'Ablo get along only because D'Ablo is the only person in Stokerton who immediately picked up on it. He's the only fledgling in his social circle with a 'real job'.

• Ezra Carmona? Is always stressed?? But he juggles a lot of information so it's fine. A useful, quick witted old man. He's also very strong by Elysian standards, but he sort of disregards it.

• Mavis is a gift and integral to Stokerton's Council, but she's also probably the stiffest young vampire I've ever written.

• Leila Colson is actually the stiffest, most rule oriented vampire alive, and I'm making her work alongside Eddie Poe, who is about as rule oriented as an eel.

• Amelia is a fledgling fashion designer with way too much money and a sunbeam personality. She's friends with lots of important vampires and can keep a secret like her life depends on it. She has two human apprentices that she definitely isn't in a 'romantic entanglement' with.
