Knowing full well that no media outlet is covering what is happening in Armenia, here are some updates for those who wish to stay informed:
For the past three weeks, azerbaijani forces have been firing at Armenian cross-border villages. Although no injuries have been reported, the gunfire has damaged residential homes. On the night of April 13, azerbaijani forces opened fire on the Armenian village of Khnatsakh in the Syunik Province, damaging the local Cultural Center.
The Board of Directors of the Export-Import Bank of the United States has approved two final commitments totaling more than $339 million to support aircraft exports to azerbaijani Silk Way West Airlines, which has been implicated in transferring weapons from israel to azerbaijan, and its cargo flights from israel’s ovda airbase to azerbaijan have notably increased, particularly in 2024, aligning with periods of heightened military activity by the azerbaijani regime. This follows a long-standing pattern, where Silk Way’s flights to israel have consistently risen during times of military escalation by the azerbaijani government, particularly during conflicts with Armenia and Artsakh. Since 2016, israel has been a key military supplier to azerbaijan, and ovda serves as a crucial airfield for this transfer of military materials.
While the US and israel are aiding and arming azeris, Hungary has blocked the EU from allocating an additional 10 million euros ($11 million) in “non-lethal” military aid to Armenia through its European Peace Facility (EPF). Unlike other EU member states, Hungary has openly supported azerbaijan in the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) conflict. The Hungarian Foreign Ministry reaffirmed that support three days after the outbreak of the 2020 Armenian-azerbaijani war in Artsakh.

None of my Achievements are my Own - Lando Norris x Verstappen! Reader
Plot: Being the little sister of Max Verstappen, Ex Girlfriend of Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris current girlfriend nothing that you do, seems to reflect on you, it’s always one of the men in your life getting the credit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Coming from a family with the last name Verstappen, made anything you did as a child not good enough.
You won a medal in your swimming class, Max had won 3.
You raised €600 euro selling baked cakes across your village for the local environment agency. Max had raised €2000 for his local karting track to get new tires around the edges for protection and have the track relayed.
They were silly little things but as a kid, you never felt appreciated by your family and it wasn’t just your dad, it seemed to be your mum too. Max and Victoria also never took notice of your feelings on the matter.
As you got older, being cast out and almost ignored by your family caused you to develop Anxiety and stayed in the house for most of your teen years.
You only really left when forced to go to Max’s races as he started progressing his way through the FIA feeder series to get to F1.
“Dad I really don’t want to be here today” you sighed rubbing your shoulder as you kept your headphones half on half off.
“It’s good for you to support your brother, especially as he’s becoming an accomplished young man. I can’t say the same for you” he frowns watching as Max passes you guys on track.
That race shortly ended. You saw Max getting a little heated just after the podium, and you ran over to your older brother to try calm him down.
If there was one thing you were good at it was calming his bad temper down. Not that you ever got the recognition.
“Max, Maxie what’s going on?” You ask running up to him, and seeing the guilty looking boy next to him.
“Next time maybe fucking look” Max seethes at the boy.
“Max calm down. What happened” you ask taking a hold of his arm, but he swats your hand off.
“He nearly made me loose that race from his careless driving” he points at the boy before storming of to your father, no doubt to have him critique the hell out of his race.
“I’m so sorry about him” you admit to the boy bashfully. He was still stood there looking rather awkward.
“It’s fine, he was right. You’re his sister right?” he sighs.
“Yeah- how’d you know?” You ask.
“You always seem to be here with Max and your dad. I don’t think he’d talk to you the way he does if you weren’t his family. I’m Charles by the way” the boy says and that was the start of something really beautiful.
You started dating Charles just as he was announced for F2 in 2016. But when that got into the media, of course it was because of Max that you’d managed to get into a relationship with a future F1 driver.
You thought finally having some independence from your brother would mean you could put a foot out in this world.
But once you left home to move in with Charles, it only seemed like as he progressed to Formula One in 2018, your further achievements were still not your own.
“Max, I’m leaving” you’d told you brother. You’d already had this conversation with your father who had refused at the idea at first, thinking it preposterous of you to leave.
“What do you mean?” He’d asked cocking his head to the side.
“I’m going to live with Charles, I think it’s going to be better for me” you said, looking down, and playing with your fingers.
“What do you mean, better for you” he asks with a frown on his face. Despite what the fans, or media stated Max loved you with his whole heart, and it was a huge heart he loved you with, he however was ignorant to your feelings on independence. But that was also partly your fault for hiding it so well.
“I just want to go do something for me, you know where it’s my name tied to it and I think somewhere new away from everything here is exactly what I need” you explained.
“Your name?” He asks with even more of a frown.
“None of my achievements are my own, or are acknowledged because I’m the sister of Max Verstappen but maybe I just want to be Y/N for a little bit? I want people to notice me for me, and what I’ve done in life. Not just because my last name is Verstappen” you smiled and hoped that day your new life with Charles would be different.
It wasn’t, If anything … it was worse.
You got into University to study engineering, but that was only because you were dating F1 driver Charles Leclerc otherwise you would have gotten into University the minute you turned 18 in 2017. Rather than delaying it till 2019 once Charles had a secure seat in Ferrari.
And when you became an advocate for APM Monaco, it was only because Charles was asked first.
Or once you got a job within McLaren in 2019 it was only because you had a brother driving for RedBull and a boyfriend driving for Ferrari. Not because of your ambition and hard work in your first year of University.
And when Charles proposed to you, you were quick to say yes.
You were ready to get rid of the dreadful Verstappen name, and Y/N Leclerc had a nice ring to it, and maybe once you just became Charles fiancé you’d have some independence.
But that fantasy was of course short lived.
“Charles baby?” You asked coming home from a day at university. You’d come home because a lecturer had failed to turn up so you thought you’d surprise your boyfriend with his favourite meal and some flowers.
You heard some movement in the bedroom making you go up and see a sight that broke your heart.
Your boyfriend of 4 years, fiancé for 1 year in bed with another woman. You couldn’t bare the sight.
“Y/N my love. I - what” he gasps as you’d entered the bedroom.
“H-how long?” You’d asked, it was your first question. We’re you not good enough?
“Ma Cherie, please forgive me I’m so so sorry” he begs getting on his knees and the other girl takes her leave.
And the worst thing of all, you were so hopelessly in love with him, that you nearly did forgive him with that look.
“Nothing I’ve ever done in my life, has ever been because of me. I’ve never got the credit for anything, so this one time… I’m taking the credit for breaking up with you. And you are going to tell everyone how you broke my heart … because I will not have you take this from me” you’d said to him with tears in your eyes, a sense of deja vu from you conversation three years prior with Max.
You broke up with him on the spot not wishing to ever see him again.
After some time of self reflecting and improvement you and Lando, who had joined McLaren at the same time as you and became your close friend decided it was time to be more than friends.
Lando had always kind of held a school boy crush on you since you both started in 2019, but he knew you were untouchable thanks to both your brother and your boyfriend at the time. Being the same age made you guys really close.
Once you’d broken up with Charles, he could see the change in you, there wasn’t that sparkle in your eyes, you always looked pretty vacant when he looked at you when you thought nobody was looking.
He’d watch the way your eyes lit up with fake happiness when someone approached you to talk.
You and Lando started dating at the end of the 2022 season. However when he said he wanted to keep it under wraps for a while you were so excited. It meant you had Landos love and affection but you were free to be you right?
WRONG
Whatever you’d did you were still seen as Max Verstappen’s Sister and the Ex Girlfriend of Charles Leclerc.
However as you and Lando grew as a couple you noticed he was one of the only to acknowledge your achievements even if the fans didn’t.
When you graduated from your masters in 2023 he was there with a bunch of flowers and watched as you walked across the stage being the loudest person cheering you on, well the only person really cheering you on. Your parents and brother didn’t manage to come.
When you started running a charity on the side to help creatures in the ocean stop ingesting so much plastic being thrown into the ocean. He was there at the press conference where you’d announced your invention and how it would help clear up the oceans.
All of the little side quests he did with you, he made sure to promote them as yours as yours alone and he was only tagging alone to watch and support.
Of course there were still haters, thought you were only a product of your birth name and who you’d dated and that’s why you’d been given all these opportunity’s and that you hadn’t worked hard for anything in your life.
Which was beyond false.
“Lando?” You asked one day, you both lying in bed after a stressful race weekend.
“Yes baby?” He asks looking away from his phone and his eyes fully trained on you showing he was paying full attention to you.
“I - I really love you and appreciate you, I just wanted to let you know” you say looking over at him, and he moves back in shock a little, trying not to show it.
“W-what? Where has this come from. I know you love me silly” he laughs looking over you to try determine if there was anything else going on.
“I know I know, I just - my whole life whatever I’ve done was never mine … not until I met you. And I just want you to know that I appreciate the fact that you see … well me” you breathe and as ge listens he looks like he could cry from the things you are saying to him.
He knew your relationship with your brother was strained at best, he saw that from the very start. And he knew you and Charles didn’t exactly end on a happy note but he didn’t realise just how much you’d been not only discredited for but out right stolen off.
“Baby - why did you never tell me” he asks pulling you into him and hugging you while toying with your hair gently.
“I guess I never felt like I had a voice until I met you, because nothing was my own. But I have that with you!” You smile tears brimming your own eyes with how much you love this man in front of you.
“Marry me” he whispers not looking at you, and you think you didn’t hear him correctly.
“What?”
“Marry me. I never want you to feel like that ever again, and I love you more than anything on this planet. I want to show you just how much of a voice you have for the rest of our lives” he offers and you can’t help but just stare at his eyes.
“Yes - Yes” you cry and cling to him like a koala.
You’d finally found your voice and your purpose and that was in Lando Norris.

Alex Palou’s family got together to save up enough money to get him a go kart when he was five years old because he had became obsessed with the track he would go by on the way to and from school.
At seven, he was encouraged by a member of the track’s staff to take part in a race.
He won local championships with his dad and uncle being his mechanic and by 14 was accepted into Centre d’alt Rendiment, an elite athletic academy, and got to be a factory driver.
He finished second to George Russell in the European karting championship and the next logical step was open wheel.
But that required money, something he knew his family didn’t have.
Karting had only just been affordable through the factory seat and the cost to do a test, never mind a season, in the likes of Euro Formula Open was the equivalent of eight months of his family’s income.
So he never considered it.
Until he won the Spanish Karting Championship and with it was money to cover the cost of a test.
This also allowed him to catch the eye of Adrián Campos. Impressed him enough to get a seat despite Alex’s lack of backing.
And he did…okay.
He won races but beside his first year in 2014 where he finished 3rd in Euroformula Open Championship and 2nd in Spanish Formula 3 he didn’t have that much success.
By the end of 2016 his opportunities in Europe seemed to be over but Dallara gave him a chance in Japanese Formula 3.
He finished third with three wins.
Back to Europe for a season in Formula 3 after guest staring in the last two races in Formula 2 and again, he did okay. A couple of podiums and seventh in the championship (two places behind future teammate Marcus Armstrong).
But Honda like Alex and so it was back to Japan and Super Formula.
This was when I first heard about Palou when a couple of folk in the discord insisted we watched a replay of round 4 at Fuji Speedway when in the pissing rain he won. A mechanical in the final race had him finish the championship in third.
But he had done enough to get Dale Coyne’s attention.
Then Chip Ganassi’s.
And all because he would go by a go kart track to school.

If you follow one of the links in Pernilles interview there is an interview with Magda. Says its her last euros and she is ready for family 🥺🥺
They always deliver the goods in the big finals, but Magdalena Eriksson and her Swedish teammates are still missing the gold.
Sweden is always good at the big finals.
Annoyingly good. With their damned Swedish winning mentality.
Magdalena Eriksson laughs when she hears the description of the Swedish national team.
She may recognize the description, but she is amused when she hears the name of the sender: It is Pernille Harder.
Teammate at Bayern Munich, partner in private life and not least Sweden's opponent in Geneva on July 4, when Euro 2025's Group C gets underway with a Nordic showdown between arch-rivals.
Good nerves and full throttle Magdalena Eriksson, 119 internationals, 14 goals and vice-captain for Sweden, checks in on a video connection from Munich.
She has just finished this afternoon's training session after a season in which the German giants took care of the championship as well as the cup title. A successful season, one might say, but that's nothing new for the Swede, who is used to winning.
Later in the summer, she will go to the European Championships in Switzerland and with the national team, Magdalena Eriksson has - also - reaped a long series of triumphs: Twice Olympic silver (2016 and 2020) and twice World Cup bronze medals (2019 and 2023).
Insanely impressive performances. Especially when you consider that Sweden rarely shows up to the big finals as one of the favorites. It's as if the biggest tournaments bring out the best in the Swedes. Other teams melt in the spotlight. Magdalena Eriksson and co. just get better.
- It's something we talk about in the team. We are often less good in the periods between the big final rounds. But when it gets serious, we can come up with something special. That's how it is with this group of players, says Magdalena Eriksson.
According to the defense general, the Swedes began working with a sports psychologist when the current national coach, Peter Gerhardsson, took office in 2017.
The work with the sports psychologist, who is still attached to the team, has resulted in a strong mentality. The Swedes are able to enjoy the important matches instead of panicking.
- I think that working with a sports psychologist is extremely important for us. We have been able to channel the nervousness that always accompanies a big tournament into something positive. The matches in such a final round are extremely exciting, but instead of feeling negative pressure, we have fun and we enjoy being part of it. I really hope that this is a mentality that we can recreate here at the European Championship, says Magdalena Eriksson.
The gold is missing Although Magdalena Eriksson has been part of many terrific Swedish performances in the final rounds, she has never reached the top of the mountain.
The gold is missing from the beautiful medal collection.
The Swedes are not considered among the absolute favorites for Euro 2025 either. But they are in the field of obvious candidates for a final spot. No one will be falling off their chairs if the Swedes are still in when the gold and silver are to be distributed.
For the Swedish vice-captain, it is now or never if his national team career is to be crowned with the ultimate triumph.
- I think this is my last European Championship. I won't be here in four years. I want to start a family and start my second career, if you can call it that. So there is definitely an urge to finish on top. Finish the job this time. I know we are not the biggest favorites, and it is not realistic to expect gold. But that is my dream, she says.
Emotional match in Geneva For some finals you have to wait several weeks before the real drama begins. That won't be the case at Euro 2025.
On Friday, July 4th, Denmark and Sweden collide in a true Scandinavian horror.
Magdalena Eriksson hopes that both teams can advance from the group stage, but she considers Germany to be the favorite in Group C. Therefore, the Nordic competition could be crucial for who will advance and who will have to return home early from Switzerland.
- Even though it's the first match in the group, it's going to be extremely crucial. And it's against Pernille. That only makes the match even more emotional, says Magdalena Eriksson.
The two most aggressive  Sweden - Denmark have historically been an intense rivalry. According to Magdalena Eriksson, it could easily spark sparks on July 4th.
And paradoxically, with Magdalena Eriksson and Pernille Harder as the two most combative combatants.
- If you had to choose the player from each team who is most aggressive and hot-tempered on the field, it would probably be me and Pernille, laughs Magdalena Eriksson and adds:
- In general, I would say that both Sweden and Denmark are fairly fair teams, but we both have quite a bit of temperament in our game, she says, referring to her teammate from Bayern Munich.
We are lucky  Magdalena Eriksson has played many final rounds in her career, but she considers the 2023 World Cup to be the best experience so far.
Both because of Sweden's performance and her own ability to enjoy the tournament due to her vast experience.
But the surroundings also play a role. The spectators and the atmosphere around the final round in Australia were electric. The 2023 World Cup was yet another striking proof that women's football is in a wild development. A development that will accelerate even more at this summer's European Championship final round in Switzerland.
- We who play now are lucky. We have been allowed to experience a revolution in women's football. Both in terms of professionalism and commercialization of the sport with the opportunities that it entails. That doesn't mean we are finished and everything is good. There is still a lot that can be improved, says Magdalena Eriksson.
Are you envious of your younger colleagues who will play their entire careers under more favorable conditions than you have? Also in terms of salary, for example.
- Haha no, not envious at all. But I hope that I can stay in football when my active career is over and continue to be part of the development. We must have an even stronger and more professional women's football. With better conditions for all elite players and talent development, states Magdalena Eriksson.

!! Registration is open !!
Dear Fic Writers,
Registration for the European Fic Writers' Retreat is open!
Tumblr media
(All info about the retreat can be found in this post. PLEASE READ THAT FIRST.)
If you have definitively decided you want to attend the Fic Writers' Retreat in Germany 7-10 August 2025 (Eifel region), there are two steps you need to take.
Step 1: fill in this final registration form. Some of the questions are the same as in the previous form where you could show interest (to stay updated). But because some people might have skipped that step, I am asking everyone to answer some of the same questions again. (It won't take long, I promise.)
Step 2: After receiving your registration form, I will wait until 15 May to see how many people have registered (just to make sure there are enough applicants to let the retreat actually take place). Then I will send you an email with the payment details. Your registration is not final until I have received your payment of the deposit, which is 200 euros.
Important: the price of 360 euros per person that I indicated earlier is the price of the rent of the holiday house and total food costs divided by 8. In the event that fewer than 7 people register, the price per person will naturally go up by around 40-90 euros. Please indicate on the form if you would be willing to pay this higher amount or would rather cancel in this case. (This is why I will wait until 15 May before I charge people.) But judging by the enthusiasm so far, I'm not really expecting this to happen. :)
Conversely, if more than 7 people register (myself being number 8), the later applicants will only be able to attend if enough people are willing to share rooms. (But again, I don't foresee many problems here, based on the first survey.) If there are more than 8 participants, sharing a room will lower the price for those who share.
The registration deadline is 31 May. However, space will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis (based on date of payment received), so make sure you register as soon as you're sure!
There is room for a maximum of 16 people, if enough people are willing to share rooms. Personally I'm expecting probably around 10 people in total.
If at least 8 people apply (myself included), the retreat will definitely take place! (With 1 or 2 fewer applicants, it will only take place if everyone agrees to pay a bit more.)
Tumblr media
Sorry for the long and complicated message, but it turns out to be quite complex logistics-wise when you can't be sure how many people will apply until they do! 😅 And seeing as I'm paying all of the rent in advance myself, I want to be as clear as possible and avoid disappointment on all sides.
But I really am quite confident that enough people will apply so as to be able to let the retreat really take place, and I think it's going to be great! 😀
If you have any questions, just send a chat message!
By the way, please make sure you register for the right retreat, as there is one taking place in Canada at the exact same dates! For information on the CANADIAN RETREAT (which inspired this one!!), click here:

Nico Rosberg on Sky Germany, Track Check | pre-race | Spanish GP 2025
translation:
Sascha Roos: Who would be better to talk about the starting constellation that we have today than [giggles] Nico Rosberg. Nico, there are over 600 meters to the first corner. A lot can happen there…
Nico Rosberg: That‘s why we are looking forward to the start today! The team internal duel between Piastri and Norris. Maybe we‘ll finally get a little crash, that‘s what we‘ve all been expecting. Behind them, Max Verstappen will try getting the lead in turn one and Russell is starting in P4 like last year, where he got the lead from that position. A lot can happen!
SR: We‘ll be looking into that shortly, but first; I mean we have to do this… 2016, when you and Lewis started front row with Mercedes. You were outstanding in P2 and had a fantastic start.
NR: Yes, the start was great. As I said, I had full slipstream on the straight. Lewis closed the door, I went around the outside. You can see me going around the outside here. […]At least I tried, normally that‘s not a move that Lewis will let happen, but he breaked a little early. In the aftermath I noticed he had wrong settings there. Way too much breaking on the rear axel. He [Lewis] still doesn’t know this until today, because he never paid attention to details like these. I also had wrong settings, but they were wrong engine settings for me.
SR: Because all the jitters you had?
NR: No, because close to the start, they changed my clutch strategy and so I had to warm up my clutch in the end and not in the beginning. So in the end I forgot to flip one switch. That led to me having the wrong engine power and I had no electrical power, so I was down one third of the overall power. [Back to the race] I tried closing the door [on Lewis] at the last moment very aggressively and then all of a sudden Lewis was gone from my rear mirror. I didn‘t know where he was anymore. That of course was, because he was right next to me on the lawn. It is unbelievable. In the aftermath we checked the data and it showed he still pressed down full throttle while already on the lawn. Unbelievable. Insane.
SR: From that point on you had to pay for all damages yourselves, right?
NR: At that point we already had amendments to our contracts that said no matter who‘s fault it was, we have to pay for all damages if we crashed into each other. This crash cost me 380 000 Euros. So I tried preventing these things from there on out.
SR: Well, good thing you became WDC that year. At least it was worth it in the end.

Back in 2018, I created the original version of this list. (You can find the master post here.) Since 2024 marks my 30th year as an official fan of figure skating and there have been some more great programs created since the last time, I thought it was about time to update the list in honor of World Ice Skating Day. Same rules apply as last time:
Only senior competitive programs starting from the 1993-1994 season are eligible, since that's the first season I really started watching figure skating.
Each skater may only be listed once, unless a partner/discipline switch is involved.
Choice of music may also not be repeated. (Yes, there are two James Bond programs on the list, but Yuna and Wakaba use different music for the most part, so I'm letting it slide.)
I debated long and hard about whether or not I should still include programs from skaters who have proven themselves to be not so great people. I'm someone who has little difficulty separating the art from the artist, so in the end, I decided to keep them listed (although most of them got knocked down a few pegs). This list is more about the choreography than the skater anyway, although there are certainly some problematic choreographers out there, too. (Looking at you especially, Morozov!) So, just because a skater is listed doesn't mean that I'm a fan of them or that I condone their actions! I just think certain programs are still great regardless of the skaters' terrible behavior off the ice.
Choreographers are noted if known. If you know who choreographed the programs without a choreographer named, please let me know!
I've also created a handy playlist on YouTube if you don't want to click on all these links.

Chief Joseph (Eastman's Biography)
Chief Joseph (Heinmot Tooyalakekt, l. 1840-1904) was the leader of the Wallowa band of the Nez Perce Native American nation, who, in 1877, resisted forced relocation from his ancestral lands in the Wallowa Valley of northeastern Oregon and led his people on a 1,170-mile (1,900 km) flight toward Canada in hopes of asylum with Sitting Bull (l. c. 1837-1890).
The flight of the Nez Perce under Chief Joseph, a running battle in which he defeated US forces in every engagement, is known as the Nez Perce War, and newspaper accounts of the day, often hostile to Native American efforts to preserve their lands, were remarkably sympathetic to Chief Joseph's cause. When he and his people were a mere 40 miles (64 km) from the Canadian border, they were surprised by a US cavalry attack and forced to surrender.
Although the treaty between the Nez Pearce and the US government stipulated their relocation to a reservation in Idaho, briefly holding them in Montana Territory, they were instead quickly sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and held as prisoners of war before being shipped to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma), and finally to the Colville Indian Reservation in the state of Washington.
Chief Joseph spent the rest of his life appealing to US officials for the return of the lands of the Nez Perce in the Wallowa Valley, but his requests were denied. He is said to have died of a broken heart on the reservation in Washington on 21 September 1904.
In 1968 the US Post Office issued a stamp in his honor and memorial statues of Chief Joseph have been raised in many of the western states of the USA, but the lands of the Nez Perce have never been returned to them and there has never been any official acknowledgment of the outright theft of those lands by Euro-Americans.

The following account is taken from the 1939 edition of Indian Heroes and Great Chieftains (1916) by the Sioux physician and author Charles A. Eastman (also known as Ohiyesa, l. 1858-1939), republished in 2016. Eastman interviewed Chief Joseph in 1897 and prepared the following, which, as he said, was authenticated by General Nelson A. Miles, one of his former adversaries. The following has been edited for space, but the full account is below in the External Links section.
The Nez Perce tribe of Indians, like other tribes too large to be united under one chief, was composed of several bands, each distinct in sovereignty. It was a loose confederacy. Joseph and his people occupied the Imnaha or Grande Ronde valley in Oregon, which was considered perhaps the finest land in that part of the country.
When the last treaty was entered into by some of the bands of the Nez Perce, Joseph's band was at Lapwai, Idaho, and had nothing to do with the agreement. The elder chief in dying had counseled his son, then not more than twenty-two or twenty-three years of age, never to part with their home, assuring him that he had signed no papers. These peaceful non-treaty Indians did not even know what land had been ceded until the agent read them the government order to leave. Of course, they refused. You and I would have done the same.
When the agent failed to move them, he and the would-be settlers called upon the army to force them to be good, namely, without a murmur to leave their pleasant inheritance in the hands of a crowd of greedy grafters. General O. O. Howard, the Christian soldier, was sent to do the work.
He had a long council with Joseph and his leading men, telling them they must obey the order or be driven out by force. We may be sure that he presented this hard alternative reluctantly. Joseph was a mere youth without experience in war or public affairs. He had been well brought up in obedience to parental wisdom and with his brother Ollicut had attended Missionary Spaulding's school where they had listened to the story of Christ and his religion of brotherhood. He now replied in his simple way that neither he nor his father had ever made any treaty disposing of their country, that no other band of the Nez Perces was authorized to speak for them, and it would seem a mighty injustice and unkindness to dispossess a friendly band.
General Howard told them in effect that they had no rights, no voice in the matter: they had only to obey. Although some of the lesser chiefs counseled revolt then and there, Joseph maintained his self-control, seeking to calm his people, and still groping for a peaceful settlement of their difficulties. He finally asked for thirty days' time in which to find and dispose of their stock, and this was granted.
Joseph steadfastly held his immediate followers to their promise, but the land-grabbers were impatient, and did everything in their power to bring about an immediate crisis so as to hasten the eviction of the Indians. Depredations were committed, and finally the Indians, or some of them, retaliated, which was just what their enemies had been looking for. There might be a score of white men murdered among themselves on the frontier and no outsider would ever hear about it, but if one were injured by an Indian— "Down with the bloodthirsty savages!" was the cry.
Joseph told me himself that during all of those thirty days a tremendous pressure was brought upon him by his own people to resist the government order. "The worst of it was," said he, "that everything they said was true; besides"—he paused for a moment— "it seemed very soon for me to forget my father's dying words, 'Do not give up our home!'" Knowing as I do just what this would mean to an Indian, I felt for him deeply.
Among the opposition leaders were Too-hul-hul-sote, White Bird, and Looking Glass, all of them strong men and respected by the Indians; while on the other side were men built up by emissaries of the government for their own purposes and advertised as "great friendly chiefs." As a rule, such men are unworthy, and this is so well known to the Indians that it makes them distrustful of the government's sincerity at the start. Moreover, while Indians unqualifiedly say what they mean, the whites have a hundred ways of saying what they do not mean.
…the whites were unduly impatient to clear the coveted valley, and by their insolence they aggravated to the danger point an already strained situation. The murder of an Indian was the climax and this happened in the absence of the young chief. He returned to find the leaders determined to die fighting. The nature of the country was in their favor and at least they could give the army a chase, but how long they could hold out they did not know. Even Joseph's younger brother Ollicut was won over. There was nothing for him to do but fight; and then and there began the peaceful Joseph's career as a general of unsurpassed strategy in conducting one of the most masterly retreats in history.

This is not my judgment, but the unbiased opinion of men whose knowledge and experience fit them to render it. Bear in mind that these people were not scalp hunters like the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Utes, but peaceful hunters and fishermen. The first council of war was a strange business to Joseph. He had only this to say to his people:
"I have tried to save you from suffering and sorrow. Resistance means all of that. We are few. They are many. You can see all we have at a glance. They have food and ammunition in abundance. We must suffer great hardship and loss." After this speech, he quietly began his plans for the defense.
The main plan of campaign was to engineer a successful retreat into Montana and there form a junction with the hostile Sioux and Cheyenne under Sitting Bull…
It was decided that the main rear guard should meet General Howard's command in White Bird Canyon, and every detail was planned in advance, yet left flexible according to Indian custom, giving each leader freedom to act according to circumstances. Perhaps no better ambush was ever planned than the one Chief Joseph set for the shrewd and experienced General Howard. He expected to be hotly pursued, but he calculated that the pursuing force would consist of not more than two hundred and fifty soldiers. He prepared false trails to mislead them into thinking that he was about to cross or had crossed the Salmon River, which he had no thought of doing at that time. Some of the tents were pitched in plain sight, while the women and children were hidden on the inaccessible ridges, and the men concealed in the canyon ready to fire upon the soldiers with deadly effect with scarcely any danger to themselves. They could even roll rocks upon them.
In a very few minutes the troops had learned a lesson. The soldiers showed some fight, but a large body of frontiersmen who accompanied them were soon in disorder. The warriors chased them nearly ten miles, securing rifles and much ammunition, and killing and wounding many.
The Nez Perces next crossed the river, made a detour, and recrossed it at another point, then took their way eastward. All this was by way of delaying pursuit…

Meanwhile General Howard had sent a dispatch to Colonel Gibbons, with orders to head Joseph off, which he undertook to do at the Montana end of the Lolo Trail. The wily commander had no knowledge of this move, but he was not to be surprised. He was too brainy for his pursuers, whom he constantly outwitted, and only gave battle when he was ready. There at the Big Hole Pass he met Colonel Gibbons' fresh troops and pressed them close.
He sent a party under his brother Ollicut to harass Gibbons' rear and rout the pack mules, thus throwing him on the defensive and causing him to send for help, while Joseph continued his masterly retreat toward the Yellowstone Park, then a wilderness. However, this was but little advantage to him, since he must necessarily leave a broad trail, and the army was augmenting its columns day by day with celebrated scouts, both white and Indian. The two commands came together, and although General Howard says their horses were by this time worn out, and by inference the men as well, they persisted on the trail of a party encumbered by women and children, the old, sick, and wounded.
It was decided to send a detachment of cavalry under Bacon, to Tash Pass, the gateway of the National Park, which Joseph would have to pass, with orders to detain him there until the rest could come up with them. Here is what General Howard says of the affair. "Bacon got into position soon enough, but he did not have the heart to fight the Indians on account of their number." Meanwhile another incident had occurred. Right under the eyes of the chosen scouts and vigilant sentinels, Joseph's warriors fired upon the army camp at night and ran off their mules. He went straight on toward the park, where Lieutenant Bacon let him get by and pass through the narrow gateway without firing a shot…
However, this succession of defeats did not discourage General Howard, who kept on with as many of his men as were able to carry a gun, meanwhile sending dispatches to all the frontier posts with orders to intercept Joseph if possible. Sturgis tried to stop him as the Indians entered the Park, but they did not meet until he was about to come out, when there was another fight, with Joseph again victorious. General Howard came upon the battlefield soon afterward and saw that the Indians were off again, and from here he sent fresh messages to General Miles, asking for reinforcements.
Joseph had now turned northeastward toward the Upper Missouri. He told me that when he got into that part of the country he knew he was very near the Canadian line and could not be far from Sitting Bull, with whom he desired to form an alliance. He also believed that he had cleared all the forts. Therefore, he went more slowly and tried to give his people some rest. Some of their best men had been killed or wounded in battle, and the wounded were a great burden to him; nevertheless, they were carried and tended patiently all during this wonderful flight. Not one was ever left behind.

It is the general belief that Indians are cruel and revengeful, and surely these people had reason to hate the race who had driven them from their homes if any people ever had. Yet it is a fact that when Joseph met visitors and travelers in the park, some of whom were women, he allowed them to pass unharmed, and in at least one instance let them have horses.
He told me that he gave strict orders to his men not to kill any women or children. He wished to meet his adversaries according to their own standards of warfare, but he afterward learned that in spite of professions of humanity, white soldiers have not seldom been known to kill women and children indiscriminately…
The Bittersweet valley, which they had now entered, was full of game, and the Indians hunted for food, while resting their worn-out ponies. One morning they had a council to which Joseph rode over bareback, as they had camped in two divisions a little apart. His fifteen-year-old daughter went with him. They discussed sending runners to Sitting Bull to ascertain his exact whereabouts and whether it would be agreeable to him to join forces with the Nez Perces. In the midst of the council, a force of United States cavalry charged down the hill between the two camps. This once Joseph was surprised. He had seen no trace of the soldiers and had somewhat relaxed his vigilance.
He told his little daughter to stay where she was, and himself cut right through the cavalry and rode up to his own teepee, where his wife met him at the door with his rifle, crying: "Here is your gun, husband!" The warriors quickly gathered and pressed the soldiers so hard that they had to withdraw. Meanwhile one set of the people fled while Joseph's own band entrenched themselves in a very favorable position from which they could not easily be dislodged.
General Miles had received and acted on General Howard's message, and he now sent one of his officers with some Indian scouts into Joseph's camp to negotiate with the chief. Meantime Howard and Sturgis came up with the encampment, and Howard had with him two friendly Nez Perce scouts who were directed to talk to Joseph in his own language. He decided that there was nothing to do but surrender…
Even now, he was not actually conquered. He was well entrenched; his people were willing to die fighting; but the army of the United States offered peace and he agreed, as he said, out of pity for his suffering people. Some of his warriors still refused to surrender and slipped out of the camp at night and through the lines. Joseph had, as he told me, between three and four hundred fighting men in the beginning, which means over one thousand persons, and of these several hundred surrendered with him.
His own story of the conditions he made was prepared by himself with my help in 1897, when he came to Washington to present his grievances. I sat up with him nearly all of one night; and I may add here that we took the document to General Miles who was then stationed in Washington, before presenting it to the Department. The General said that every word of it was true.
In the first place, his people were to be kept at Fort Keogh, Montana, over the winter and then returned to their reservation. Instead, they were taken to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and placed between a lagoon and the Missouri River, where the sanitary conditions made havoc with them. Those who did not die were then taken to the Indian Territory, where the health situation was even worse.
Joseph appealed to the government again and again, and at last by the help of Bishops Whipple and Hare he was moved to the Colville reservation in Washington. Here the land was very poor, unlike their own fertile valley. General Miles said to the chief that he had recommended and urged that their agreement be kept, but the politicians and the people who occupied the Indians' land declared they were afraid if he returned, he would break out again and murder innocent white settlers! What irony!
The great Chief Joseph died broken-spirited and broken-hearted. He did not hate the whites, for there was nothing small about him, and when he laid down his weapons he would not fight on with his mind. But he was profoundly disappointed in the claims of a Christian civilization. I call him great because he was simple and honest.
Without education or special training, he demonstrated his ability to lead and to fight when justice demanded. He outgeneraled the best and most experienced commanders in the army of the United States, although their troops were well provisioned, well-armed, and above all unencumbered. He was great, finally, because he never boasted of his remarkable feat. I am proud of him because he was a true American.

Leah Williamson/ Coming Home
You were nervous. After working for the royal navy for now almost nine years you decided that you missed enough of important events in your wife’s and your family’s life. When you were first recruited at the age of 18 it was the best thing that could happen for you. You always wanted to step into your grandpas footsteps and you did.
You quickly climbed the ranks until you became captain just after you turned 23.
Your wife was esthetic when you told her.
You knew Leah since you both were just five years old.
You became best friends until she asked you to be her girlfriend on your 15th Birthday.
It was one of the happiest moments in your life.
After you asked her to marry you in the summer of 2016 you got married in a small setting after her season in 2017 both of you being just 20 but you were never more sure of something.
No one even knew you were together not even her teammates and you liked the secrecy it gave you a bit of a rush.
When you were told in 2020 you would be stationed in America for some years you knew it would be hard but you both managed the distance. One of the hardest things was not being able to be there with her when she captained England to the Euros win. But you were unbelievable proud of her.
When she raptured her ACL and you couldn’t be there for her it broke you.
So when you were told that you would have to stay over sea even longer you knew you couldn’t be apart from her anymore so you asked to be discharged.
That is what let you to this day.
Standing in a sold out emirates stadium at the semi finals of the champions league 2023/24.
You talked with Jonas and asked him to help you surprise Leah.
The players knew that a former navy captain would be honored but that was about all the information the players had.
After the players walked on the pitch, Leah captaining Arsenal and after the champions league hymn was played it was time.
You heard the Stadion speaker announce you so you walked out of the tunnel still in your uniform.
“And now before we start with the match we would like to honor former Royal Navy Captain Y/N Williamson for her service.”
Your eyes were only focused on Leah. She gasped as your name was announced and sunk to her knees as soon as she saw you walking out of the tunnel. You could see that a few tears had already escaped her eyes and you felt some of your own tears roll down you cheeks. Her teammates looking confused between you and her captain as you walked towards her.
Suddenly Leah jumped up and started running at full speed towards you, jumping in your arms once she reached you. You caught her and held her close, crying into her neck.
“ I can’t believe you’re here. I missed you so much! Please tell me that you’re here to stay.” She whispered into your ear. Still clinging to your body.
“I am here baby. I am home. I here to stay. I am not leaving you again.”
After you both had calmed down a bit you let her down, still holding her close.
And it you didn’t care that you were standing in the middle of a sold out emirates, four years without holding your love, without being able to hold her were just to long. So you captured her lips with your own.
The kiss was everything and more. You felt her shiver and smile into the kiss.
After what felt like a lifetime but wasn’t nearly long enough you pulled away. Breathing hard and looking at a smiling face.
“I can’t wait until after the match but now you have to what you do best. Win this match. I am so proud of you!” You said and she nodded, kissed you one last time before she went back to her team.
Once the game started you went to Leah’s family and did what you wished you could have done for the last four years supporting your wife at one of her most important matches of her career.
Arsenal won the game 3:1 and qualified for the champions league final.
This evening you didn’t move from Leah’s side. Together you told her teammates about how you got together and everything between. Just holding your girl in your arms.
Nothing could top this feeling.
You knew you did the right thing. Never before had you seen Leah so happy, not even after the Euros win.
Coming home was the best decision you ever made.
“I love you Leah Williamson.” You said to her when you were dancing together at the winning party.
“I love you to Y/N Williamson. Always.”

Note
I might miss the point but both are football fans and both attended the final with their groups of friends, sat separately and most likely ran into each other in the VIP area backstage hence the pic. A place like being at the same wedding is a totally different thing especially if we know Louis isn’t friends with the bride as much as Harry is. Sure they seemingly ran into each other alongside other VIPs and singers and F1 drivers backstage in the stadium but sat separately and went with different groups of friends. How is that any more than just that. They could hate each other and still run into each other unwantingly at such events haha it’s not possible to forever avoid that, especially at a big final like the euros or a music award show etc.
I’m not sure what you’re trying to achieve here. Are you trying to convince me that it’s not a big deal? Maybe you haven’t been here all that long, but plausible deniability is the name of the game. Everything you cite is exactly the reason they both could show up there.
It seems like you don’t understand the lengths to which people (including HL) have gone to keep anyone from seeing the two of them even in the same vicinity.
You certainly don’t have to believe they’re still together, I’ll even give you a pass if you’ve somehow ignored all the evidence and believe they never dated, but if you actually believe the two of them hate each other, you’re a lost cause.
The point of everyone’s excitement is that, for some reason, the two of them being in the same place at the same time was allowed to be public. And that we got a photo of them just feet away from each other. Other than Louis’ performance in 2016, that hasn’t happened outside of One Direction concerts and interviews since Lairport in 2014, IIRC. They’ve been consistently absent from each other’s lives in a way that is so glaringly obvious, it would be funny if it wasn’t so infuriating.
I’m not saying anything more is going to come from this moment, but it was a big deal.

BARBARA ROBERTS ★ DTN SERIES
series’ masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An old chapter is reopened, that force and distinction that drove Barbara Roberts to the top of F1 for two consecutive years, back home. Malibu Racing is a new temple, the extension of a legacy.
Barbara Roberts, Team Principal and CEO of Malibu Racing F1 Team has her origins tied to history books. A two-time world champion whose on-track abilities couldn’t be ignored. A fierce competitor who came back for more.
At the young age of four, Barbara began chasing the excitement behind the wheel, observing karting races closely, going home, and developing her talent with each lap of her uncle’s old kart. She found happiness in speed, enjoyed visiting the Phoenix Street Circuit each year, obsessed over the Indy500, and watched Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost challenge each other throughout the years. Suddenly, she began to dream about a hot-pink car, all her notebooks filled with drawings of it. She, as well as her family, then understood that racing was a fire that needed to be fueled.
Roberts made her kart racing debut at the age of eight, and after winning her first race, it was a matter of time before her name was engraved on several US-based kart championship trophies. However, further progress would require expanding horizons, which prompted the Roberts to move across the ocean in 1994, supporting Barbara for what could be a challenging career.
Europe was fast, she stayed faster. By fourteen her collection of kart titles included national, international, and world championships. Every race and practice aimed for that unattainable perfection, being aware of the judging eyes on each step she took. At 16 years old, Roberts was fearless, deciding to pursue another dream of hers, an engineering career. She used to say that the pressure was a reminder of what was yet to come.
Pieces began to fall into place, Barbara embarked on single-seaters as soon as age allowed it. Her first title in Monoposto Racing Club was followed by titles in Formula BMW ADAC, Formula Renault, and the Formula 3 Euro Series — all consecutive titles. And bound to keep the momentum, she started hunting for a seat in Formula One, closing the deal with BMW Williams in a reserve capacity for 2004 and securing a race seat for the 2005 season.
Debuting at 21, Barbara spent her year fighting at the midfield in struggling machinery, yet was able to finish 10th in the World Championship, once again pouring ink on paper for what would be BMW Sauber in 2006. An improvement in reliability for her sophomore season placed Roberts on track for her maiden Grand Prix victory in the streets of Monaco, an unbelievable, emotional, and well-remembered drive that holds her in the tracks’ spotlight to this day.
For the 2007 season, Scuderia Ferrari took the bet on two young talents: Barbara Roberts and Kimi Räikkönen, giving both drivers the exact same 3-year-contract and an opportunity to make history.
The pair held a fiery battle all season, ending in one of the most astonishing title deciders in the sport’s history, where the world championship rested on their number of wins due to a tie in the points. The crown sealed on Räikkönen, but Barbara’s own would arrive that very next year, securing it after 8 wins and 15 total podiums.
In her final year of mastery, Roberts became a double World Champion after a year-long battle against Brawn’s Jenson Button, three points separating them. And despite being contracted to race in 2010, Roberts decided to leave F1 behind at the end of the 2009 season.
After her F1 retirement, Barbara has taken on different roles and challenges throughout the years. In 2011 revealing her retirement's original reason, Roberts announced her new position as CEO of her family’s emblematic automobile manufacturer, Malibu Motors, linking nostalgia with modernity. In 2016, they held the biggest car launch in history, presenting one supercar and seven SUVs which resulted into having six of those as the bestselling cars of the year. In 2017, Malibu Motors became part of the Formula 3 engine programme, making the public think that was her only form of a comeback to motorsport. Yet, one year later, a victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans was waiting for her and former rivals, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. And, in for 2019, she begun sponsoring multiple young women across motorsport, mentoring those in the path to Formula One.
Important figures of the sport, old colleagues, and the public, believed Barbara would be back in the car sooner or later, but after fourteen years, she has opted for a different path. A decade-long project becomes reality in 2023, with two hot-pink cars flying on track, resembling Barbie’s old childhood drawings.

This clip from a recent Elis and John episode stood out to me— John and Elis respectively explaining the little games and challenges they invent for themselves and their fantasies on winning them, whether in Wordle scoring or scoring the winning Euro 2016 final goal for Wales against France (you can probably guess, PCDs, which is for whom).
But just in how sheepish and shy they get when relaying these obviously mostly unspoken little games you play to keep yourself going, Dave's utterly withering remarks with incredible comedic timing ('He lives alone, Elis!'), but especially for Dave's endearing summary at the end: 'We're all just kids at heart, aren't we?' And of course, John's punchline about traumatised ones.
It's a good, if somewhat niche and strange show, the Elis and John show!

To add on to the person asking about Larry and if u think it was real- I (unfortunately) used to be one- but as I grew up and kinda connected the dots I realized that if they were together, it likely evolved into something very unhealthy. There’s plenty of evidence that A) Harry wanted a solo career and B) Louis didn’t know. Amongst other unhealthy things… my guess as to why Louis gets so triggered by Larry of course is likely bc of his son, but also bc it’s likely that people are romanticizing his relationship with an ex that hurt him. Can you imagine ur S.O betraying you and you 1) can’t say anything about it 2) have to talk nicely about them anyway but also 3) everyone keeps shipping you two and you can’t scream that this person hurt you. I think they’ve forgiven each other and I don’t think that there’s any true bad blood, but I can imagine it’s exhausting to have to hear about
My guess is that Louis knew that Harry wanted to go solo (if Zayn did, surely Louis did), but at the time of hiatus, Louis (+Niall +Liam) didn’t know how much Harry would try to disassociate himself from One Direction. I think that was the most painful to Louis, Harry’s disloyalty. Louis could probably forgive Harry’s greed and the poor choice of friends, but not the insult to a band he was very proud of.
I also don’t think Harry’s change was something that happened right away; it wasn’t a switch that turned on January 1, 2016. Through 2016 Louis had a lot of personal issues to deal with (Freddie’s birth, Jay’s illness), and if I recall, in early 2017 Louis was patiently watching and waiting to see what would happen. There was a feeling of optimism that all of 1D could all do some sort of solo projects and support each other. Remember when Harry retweeted the photo of Louis drinking a milk shake, in April 2017? Harries won’t admit that he did this intentionally, but Harry Styles did, and the tweet was left up for 45 minutes. I think Louis was aware.
In 2017, Louis had praised Harry’s music and film (and hyped everyone else’s projects), wished Harry a happy birthday online, and given a lot of good will. Louis also denied Larry in July 2017 so Harry wouldn’t have to (but he still got to say he was “unlabeled”— LGBT friendly). At some point, it became clear that Harry wouldn’t return Louis’ good will, and that it wasn’t in Sony’s plans, either. Louis had taken the high road, and he got played. I think Louis used a word in his 1883 magazine interview, that people who weren’t native to LA but were transplants from elsewhere were “snakes.” For Louis, that’s a loaded, emotional word, with a lot of personal betrayal behind it.
I do think that Louis gets very irritated by the mention of Larry these days. You can see the difference in his facial expression between 2017 (sardonic, playful) and 2024 (tired, sick of it, disgusted). Louis took the extraordinary step of blocking HLD. Blocking a UA is something he has never done.
I would agree with you that Louis has gotten over whatever happened with Harry. He talks about Harry as a brother, not unlike Niall, in a neutral way. Both at the Euros finals and at Liam’s funeral, they were in the same vicinity with little to no interaction— neither positive nor negative. They didn’t avoid each other but weren’t visibly warm toward one another. Louis’ sister Lottie was at the funeral as well, seen only talking to Zayn’s family. Louis had no interactions with Ben Winston or James Corden, whom he’s known for ages. When Louis did talk to someone, it was Zayn.
Part of the reason that I think Louis is able to let go of the past is that he is secure in his own career now, with his own investments and projects, and a clear way ahead. AOTV was an exorcism of sorts. When Louis wrote Walls, he could say goodbye to those traumas through his creativity. When he made AOTV, he processed the trauma from One Direction, including the most hurtful, most traumatic times. Unlike Harry, Louis has no pettiness. He doesn’t really ever blame others, but rather tries to work out how to get it out of his own system.
But you can understand that a normal person only has so much forbearance for fans’ invasive, toxic nonsense. No matter how clearly Louis shows his displeasure, Larries don’t give up. I think this is one main reason that Louis rarely ever comes on social media.
Addendum: I also think that because Liam died from issues of addiction, anxiety, and lack of self-confidence, Louis feels responsible in a way, because he had always tried to publicly support and defend Liam. And I do think that Louis feels his bandmates could have done more for Liam, especially Harry, who never publicly returned Liam’s support or friendship. I think this is a very tough thing to forgive. I think Zayn’s gesture is wonderful, and I know Louis sees it too.

Hey!
The drawing is from yesterday, but I didn't feel like posting anything, so I kept it away from sight for a minute. Then, I decided to write. I missed writing.
And it made me realize something...
See, a few years back, before I could rely on my disability living allowance, I had to write A LOT. Like, a book every two weeks, or something like that. I did it from 2014 to 2016, and I would publish books every month. Did I like those books? Hell no. Many of them were unpublished very quickly.
Did I make a ton of money out of those books?
No.
But it was enough to allow me to bring me some food to the table. We had to live with about 750 euros per month or so, and it was my fiancé's disability living allowance.
So, when I got my own allowance, and when it went from 750 euros to 1000 and some, things got... Easier. Also, thanks to my dad, I got hired as a freelance for two magazines in 2019 / 2020 and I'm still working as a freelance for them.
Writing a LOT made me hate writing for a while. I would publish adult novels because it sold. Not because I liked it.
All the while being told that I was useless, a parasite, and that I would never amount to anything good.
Now, I could write as slowly as possible. I could take my time, and that's what I'm learning to do now.
But old habits are hard to get rid of.
And when you're afraid of losing everything, you fight back, fangs and claws out.
My fiancé used to give me his clothes. He would do his best to ensure that I didn't need anything, and I would try to do the same.
We also had to take care of our dog, and our cat wasn't in the picture yet.
When I got my first allowance, I bought my fiancé a bunch of clothes. I bought everything he needed. I was finally able to contribute fully to our home life.
I didn't need to run anymore.
But I did, because it's an old habit.
I'm learning to slow down.

Driver Profiles: Charles Leclerc
Updated December 2024
Tumblr media
Name: Charles Marc Hervé Perceval Leclerc
Age: 27
Nationality: Monagasque
Years in F1: 7 (Alfa Romeo Sauber 2018, Ferrari 2019-Present)
Number: 16
WDCs: N/A
Driving Style: Leclerc is a very strong racer, known for his raw speed, aggression, and talent on street circuits. He is famous for his late braking overtakes, and for holding off on overtaking until the perfect moment. There have been times in races where he has chosen not to overtake/let someone by because he was biding his time for the most strategically sound moment. Often, commentators refer to him sitting behind drivers as 'prowling' due to his later actions. Like Verstappen he can be very aggressive, and he pairs it with a strong instinct and technical skills which leads him to be a very clean overtaker. The only criticism I would have is that in his nature to wait for the perfect moment, he often lets opportunities slip by. Other than that, he's a particularly well rounded driver, and when placed in a solid car is a regular on the podium.
History: Born into a racing family (his father Hervé raced in F3) Leclerc first drove a cart when he was 5 years old, and started his karting career in 2005, winning the French PACA Championship in 2005, 2006, and 2008. In 2009 he became French Cadet champion before moving up to the KF3 class in 2010, where he won the Junior Monaco Kart Cup. He continued in the KF3 class for 2011, winning the CIK-FIA KF3 World Cup, the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy and the ERDF Junior Kart Masters.
Tumblr media
(Leclerc in 2009)
Leclerc graduated to the KF2 category in 2012, winning the WSK Euro Series title, and finishing 2nd in the CIK-FIA European KF2 Championship and the CIK-FIA Under 18 World Karting Championship. In his final year of karting in 2013, Leclerc won the South Garda Winter Cup and finished second in the CIK-FIA World KZ Championship, behind Max Verstappen (his childhood rival).
Tumblr media
(unknown on left (got lazy), Leclerc middle, Verstappen right)
In 2014 Leclerc started in single-seaters where he took seven podium positions, to finish runner-up in the championship behind Nyck de Vries. Leclerc also won the Junior Championship title in the last race of the season. He graduated to Formula 3 in 2015, and had a successful stint, earning multiple podiums, but finished 4th in the standings. In 2016 he moved on to GP3, where he took his first championship win.
Tumblr media
(Leclerc in 2014)
Formula 2 was where Leclerc really shined. He joined in 2017 for PREMA Racing, one of the best F2 teams. In his rookie year he dominated the track, regularly getting pole positions and wins. This led him to earn the championship title before the season even ended, and made him one of a short list of drivers who won F2 in their rookie year. To this day that season is seen as one of the best performances F2 ever saw. During GP3 and F2 he was a testing and reserve drive for both Haas and Ferrari, after joining the Ferrari Drivers Academy. In late 2017 his contract with Alfa Romeo Sauber (Ferrari's junior team) was announced for the 2018 season.
Leclerc had a strong season with Sauber, regularly finishing within the points in a midfield car. It was his performance at there that made Ferrari take the plunge and choose him for the 2019 seat. This would be one of the rare times that Ferrari had actively gone after a driver, and they offered him the longest contract in Ferrari history; 5 years.
Tumblr media
(Leclerc in his year with Sauber)
Unfortunately this year for Ferrari were not all that great. While Leclerc clinched his maiden win at Spa, and a massive win at Ferrari's home in Monza, there were multiple car failures that held both him and his teammate back. However, he did end the season at 4th in the championship, and ahead of his teammate 4x WDC Sebastian Vettel.
Tumblr media
(Leclerc winning in Spa 2019)
2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 will all carry similar dark clouds for Leclerc. Only in 2022 was he truly battling for the championship, and by midway in the season the battle was already lost. But still, Leclerc is a regular on the podium and has won multiple races in his time with Ferrari.
His 2024 season was perhaps his strongest, showing incredibly consistent results, especially after the summer break. he had three fantastic wins, one in Monaco, one in Monza, and one in Austin. Beyond that he was a regular podium finisher. He finished 3rd in teh championship.
Tumblr media
(Leclerc's on top step in Monaco 2024)
Major Races:
2019 Bahrain GP - This was almost Leclerc's first win, and where he secured his first ever pole position. Unfortunately a late race engine problem cost him victory and he would finish 3rd.
2019 Spa GP - Leclerc's first win, after snatching pole and keeping his lead, he held off Lewis Hamilton in the final laps. An especially emotional win, as his good friend Antoine Hubert had passed away in a F2 accident the day before.
2019 Monza GP - This was the first Ferrari home win in nearly 10 years, and was a very emotional one for Ferrari and Leclerc. Starting on pole, he drove a highly defensive race and held off the two Mercedes the whole time.
2022 Australian GP - By far Leclerc's most dominant win, he started the race on pole and had incredibly fast pace the whole time. He also snatched fastest lap (a grand slam) and crossed the line with a significant gap to second.
2023 Vegas GP - While Leclerc only finished P2 in this race, his last lap overtake on Sergio Perez wowed the crowd. This intense last-minute lunge got him up to 2nd. He stated he chose to take this risky move because he had seen Perez make a mistake on that corner a few laps earlier.
2024 Monaco GP - When Leclerc won his home GP, there wasn't a dry eye in the city. Taking pole in qualifying, he drove a level-headed and strong race, making zero mistakes the entire time. He finished with a solid lead and became the first Monagasque in 90 years to win in Monaco.
2024 Austin GP - Starting from 4th, an incredible triple overtake saw Leclerc take the lead of the race early on, and he controlled it for the rest of the time. Brilliant drive.
2024 Abu Dhabi GP - While not a race win, Leclerc drove an incredible race moving from P19 to finish on the podium. Perhaps his most impressive race to date, it was a masterclass on overtakes and wheel-to-wheel driving.
Cheers,
-B
