He receives no answer. “Then that shit was not on you.” “But they wouldn’t have- if- if it wasn’t for me..”

Six hours later, he sits on an empty chair rubbing his eyes. The surgery went smoothly, but minutes later Scotty and a few others from engineering came in need of a dermal regen sesh after a small explosion. And after that, a lieutenant that he knew vaguely came in vomiting violently and he didn’t feel right leaving him. And after that, he realized that he never finished his charting for the day. Until another whole shift had gone by and he had simply never gotten around to leaving.

But truth be told, no offense to you, I trust half asleep Jade to be honest with me about her pain a whole lot more than I trust fully awake Jade.” “I’m seriously fine. I’ve had stomach aches as long as I can remember, I’ve been to a doctor, and I deal with them fine, usually.” “When, exactly was this doctor's visit?” He asks, a skeptical eyebrow raised. “I was about twelve, I think,” she responds, a bit evasively, but at least her words seem candid. “C’mon, we’re gonna go get some food, ‘cause god knows how long it's been since you’ve eaten, then we’re both gonna get some rest, and in the mornin’, we’re gonna figure this out. Please. Let me help you.”

“So you have really powerful senses right? Well, obviously, aside from sight. How many years of training did it take to be able to do what you do? Who taught you? Are you enhanced or just like a badass ninja? Were you born blind? Were you born with your abilities? Is that rude to ask? Sorry!” He still has about a million questions in need of answering, but he really doesn’t want to scare Mr. Matt off with his curiosity.  “Wow,” the man begins to respond. “Most people’s first question is ‘Are you really blind?’.” But he laughs to let Peter know he’s not offended. Then he surprises him. “Yes, my whole life, an old blind guy, somewhere in between, no, I was blinded when I was nine in a chemical spill, I got my abilities then too. And, no, that’s not rude to ask, at least, not to me, personally. Finally, please don’t apologize for being curious.” Mr. Matt’s lips quirk up in a way that reminds him of Mr. Tony. The smile on Peter’s face turned sad for a moment, but he quickly perked back up. “That’s amazing!”

Threadbare

It’s indecent, really. When you sit to unload your thoughts onto a page and realize that there isn’t any way to convey the thousands of words swirling in your mind into one succinct thought. I envy those who can rationalize every experience into something meaningful and grow from even the bitterest of moments. I would gladly trade these thousand-thoughts-per-minute for one moment in the mind of someone who can look at life through the rosy-tinted lens of optimism. If I could pluck one thought from the constant hurricane that is my mind and dissect it until every function of it’s pulsing nature was identified, I would. I’ve tried. Instead, I’m stuck with this tumbling ever changing strand of chaos that has slowly wadded itself into a cacophony of thoughts. I can’t single out just one, lest I unravel this thing that holds my soul together.

Lately, I’ve begun tugging on the borders and edges. Pulling at something to discover where it all started or where it might possibly end. Nothing. I’ve thought of cutting it, but I’ve done that before and it never ends well. My newest strategy, and one I’ve found to work well as the doldrums begin to set in, is to apply friction.

I take this jumbled up mass of thoughts, words, emotions (or lack therof) and begin to rub it against any possible sort of kindling I can find. The more volatile the better. I’ve scraped and scratched and even scorched off some of the edges, yet nothing will stay lit. The tangled mass continues to grow even as I burn pieces from the borders. I know it will eventually outgrow me but that primal instinct that’s drawn to both spark and survival won’t let me quit.

So, I’ll go on. On the outside, together. On the inside, wholly broken and probably unsalvageable. It’s indecent, really.
