I have a lot of feelings about the Durin Family, Fili in Particular
---Howdy folks it is that time of year again where i go absolutely feral for Fili Durin. He is underappreciated and tumblr has addressed that but i feel an URGE to add to the discourse so here I am. This post is not done, fyi. I will add more to it later.
It's 10pm/22:00. I just got home from class. I'm waiting for my ramen water to boil. There is a fireplace and some holiday lights. Let's have a (fireside)chat.
First of all, the constant tying of Fili and Kili together?? Like I get it. Merry and Pippin parallels. I love parallels (looking at you, George), but come on. Chill, just a tad. I know Tolkein didn't give you much to go by, but he didn't even write tauriel into the books or Bolg and yall ran with that anyways. Use your creative brains, pls, I'm actually begging you.
ANYWAYS. Have them develop separately even if only a little. Kili is the younger one, literally viewed younger bc he has the smallest itty bitty beard. He is not the heir, he is the spare, and could have some deep rooted personal insecurities about that as a result. He may feel that he deeply has to prove himself to Thorin bc he does not have a set role in the future like Fili does. Kili gets his romance with Tauriel, which--khgf;ushfw;e uneneccary, but I can appreciate the attempt to broaden the target market and appeal to a romance audience even if the previews did not hint at that happening at all so it would not have been a marketable trait per say but I digress. Again with the parallels of forbidden romance, poor Legolas still does not get any, we know, he was not even in the books really either, let's move on.
Kili is babied by the company, needs to prove himself, his mother made him promise to return to him so he is still deeply in the "coming of age" side of things (a lot of the company is, but that's a topic for another word vomit fireside chat). He begins to realize that he might like elves which goes against his family and he was already the spare, might as well go all in and fall in love with an elf. Fine. I can deal with that. But let's see more of Kili messing up, more so than just the trolls. Let's see him make silly goofy mistakes more. The company always tries to keep him out of the line of fire by making him an archer (heh) and keeping him off the front lines. They do everything to protect him, bc Dis is a terrifying woman, ansd if she made Kili promise to return to her, dammit, the company will return him to her if it is the last thing they do. Kili likely spends less time with Thorin and Dwalin than his brother, so here he is, questioning his own self worth and if he belongs in the party and his own abilities while coming of age and sticking out from his family even more, so why not rebel a little? why not be an archer which is not as glorified, why not consider shaving to meet cross cultural beauty standards, why not date the elf (dammit, I'm convincing myself for Tauriel's presence and I hate that). He's trying his best and messing up along the way, and is INNOCENT. Completely. He is aware of his ancestry and what happened, but he and Bilbo are the two being narrated to when telling of the Durin family history, and as a result, the differences in dwarven / hobbit culture could be explored further. Thorin has a little kiddo to watch out for, and maybe is softer around, because even Thorin knows Kili is young, maybe even too young to be here but if they didn't let him come he would have snuck after them, so we get to see a more forgiving, family-man Thorin who we do not see anywhere else (and yes we get that at the end of the movie but I'm getting to my critique of the (I almost called it a keldabe wrong fandom) forehead touch with a name I cannot recall later).
Onto his brother. Fili is the heir, okay. So, that means that he is likely raised very differently from Kili. Whereas Kili may have had some time to play and be a kid (as much as they could in the Blue Mountains as refugees, anyways), Fili likely was given no such privilege. He followed Thorin around like a lost puppy, watching his every move and trying to imitate it, because he knew he would have to do Thorin's job someday. Even if Thorin did get married / have a kid / etc there would likely still be a window where Fili was in charge before Thorin's kid came of age, and as the years went on, the chances of that happening diminished, and so Fili threw himself more and more into his crown-prince-studies. Maybe a little obsessively, just like his uncle, who had practically stepped into the role as father. Because Fili thought he had to be Thorin. Thorin, meanwhile, saw the King that Fili could be, and that King was so much better than him. Fili grew up humble as a result of them all being refugees, something Thorin did not have to learn until much later and even then he never fully got it. Fili was kind, because he saw the suffering of his people, and understood how large of a difference a small act could make. Fili also had the teachings of Thorin drilled into him, because Thorin's problem was that whenever he saw Fili, he also saw Frerin. Frerin was Thorin's younger brother, just as blond as Fili, and (I'm assuming) played a roll in Fili's name (both starting with F). Frerin died at the Battle of Azanulbizar, and Thorin remembers that battle, he remembers losing his little brother. He can understand the fear that Fili feels whenever the company encounters a fight because he has felt the same in the worst of ways. But, because Thorin understands, he pushes Fili to be better than him. Even if that pushing is too much, too hard, too fast, too young--Thorin knows that Fili can be better than him, and Thorin does not want Fili to suffer as he has suffered, so he does everything in his power to prepare Fili for what is to come, and because Thorin loves him, that is all he does. He pours that love out as motivation and pushes Fili to do more, do everything, and do it better than he did. Fili, being young, does not realize this. He just sees it as Thorin preparing him to be king, and quite brutally at that, but Thorin is the closest thing he has to a father, Fili is not going to question it, not for anything, except for his little brother. And that just hurts Thorin, because he knows that, had he had the chance, he would have died to save Frerin at Azanulbizar. He knows Fili would do the same for Kili, but they are both so, so young. Thorin fears he could lose them both in one go, if he is not careful. So he is harsh, he scares them, he is forceful, because they do not have time for care and coddling, that won't keep them safe.
Whereas the company sees Kili as carefree and fun, Fili is cold, like his uncle. He is stone, and observant, and polite. He has to be Thorin, AND everything that Thorin is not. It is an impossible task, but he has to try. That is what is expected of him, not just by his mother and uncle, but by the entire people that is behind him, waiting for him to ascend to be king. He does not get a choice. The only one who can pull him out of that rut is his brother, with whom he actually feels like he can be what he is -- barely older than a kid.
Im gonna let that sink in for a second. They're CHILDREN.
anyways.
So, Kili gets his romance plot. It's cute and it parallels. And I've established that Kili must prove himself, and Fili will bend over backwards to make Thorin happy, which likely also extends to Dis, his mother.
I imagine Dis gave Kili the river rock to come back home, and she told Fili "be safe, don't be stupid, etc etc" but HIGHLIGHTED "take care of your brother", and Thorin does the same in the movies.
So, when Kili galavants up the bridge to open the gate after the party does a little slip and slide down the river, Fili naturally goes with. He sees that Kili is about to get shot. And Fili, who knows above all else he has to be king and he has to take care of Kili, just does the normal heroric thing and jumps in front, and he gets shot.
He is chastized for it, for being stupid, but overall they both are thanked for getting them out of the mess, and there is no time to waste because the company has to leave, and Fili (like what Kili did albeit maybe with more conviction) will not let others help him, or show weakness. So Fili continues on, poisoned, and Kili has the guilt of knowing his brother took an arrow meant for him. Fili must suffer the consequences of being a hero, and Kili must suffer the consequences of being the youngest, and feeling guilty for not taking responsibility for his own actions.
This all boils over to a fight where Kili tells Fili that "I made the choice to go up there, I didn't ask you to intervene!" because dammit Kili wants to be treated like an adult and FIli just took that away from him, again.
Fili, naturally, retorts, "I just did what I had to, because you know what? mom didn't tell me to come home--all she told me, all everyone ever tells me--is to take care of you! So I don't matter, not to this family, not in the same way you do. You're a son. I'm a prince."
Which, ouch. Slap in the face to Kili, and maybe the company overhears. Kili feels slighted, but also maybe is starting to understand, he can be a kid, Fili cannot. And Fili, meanwhile, is about to break from the weight of expectations that feels heavier than the lonely mountain ever could.
So, Kili stays with Fili when they get to Bard's, because it is what Fili would have done for him. Thorin is pissed, but lets it go, because Kili isn't Fili, and ouch, again.
I imagine Bofur helps quite a bit, he has a kind soul and listens better than most, and while Fili is delirious with fever Bofur talks him through it. Kili gets to be more coherent with Tauriel, and we get to see if their relationship actually holds up outside of a "she saved my life I love her" style of interaction which bleh is cliche as all get out.
and PLEASE when the dwarves do get out of Bard's house, they get to actually help Bard deal with the dragon. I read a fic a long time ago (if I find it I'll link it and the author below) where Fili had to be Bard's arrow anchor instead of Bard's son and I just chef's kiss. The dwarves who are left get to help the humans, and they feel more sympathy for them. Maybe they witness more death, and so when the dwarves do turn their backs on the humans later, Fili, Kili, Bofur, Bifur & crew are like "wait wtf they have suffered enough" unlike their future indifference we see in the movie.
and THEN all the dwarves arrive at the mountain, and Fili and Kili actually get welcomed home like the family they ARE, but it's stunted, because something is wrong with Thorin. He is glad to see Kili and Fili, but barely spares them a glance. They've heard the rumors and stories, of gold sickness. They begin to wonder, and we get to see them talk (probably with Bilbo) about the concept in secret where everyone is looking for the arkenstone. We get to see Kili with his hero worship refuse to believe Thorin would fall under a gold thrall. We get to see Fili, who is afraid of becoming like Thorin, too scared to enter the treasury unless immensly pressured to do so, and even then someone is always with him, because he worries. He still holds the ruby Thorin threw at him, and he keeps it in his pocket. He holds it so tight the edges cut his palm, and the pain seems to distract him from the wealth that surrounds him. I always wondered if Thorin gave Fili that ruby because he was the heir, or the only dwarf with so much gold about their person, with his hair. It was what Thorin saw first, not because it was his nephew, but because he looked like the very thing that already clawed Thorin down into his own demise.
AND NOW the war starts. and this needs to be another post bc ffs I'm losing my shit this is much too long.

The cruelest thing about the jjk Fandom is that there's no stsg ff where gojo decides to be evil with geto and end humanity together.
Like am I the only one who finds this appealing????

Recently, I was having issues with my carriage only knitting right to left, and just laying yarn along the front of my work when going left to right.
After researching for several hours online, I figured out that the main metal arm on the right was getting stuck in “part” and wasn’t returning when “plain” was engaged.
Following a tutorial from TheAnswerLadyKnits on YouTube, I carefully disassembled and removed my knitting carriage cover until it looked like it does in the video. Once I had full access to the stuck lever, I very gently cleaned and oiled it until it began to move more freely.
After a little bit of work, I was finally able to get it moving properly when the buttons were engaged. The right lever was a bit slower than the left at first but has continued to loosen over the last few days and is now working great!

What if Thorin instead of dying just Reincarnated in our time but he has all his memories of the previous life? How is this going? (Bilbo the same after Gray Heavens)
(I'm not a writer, but I love philosophical talks about anything fictional and having ideas on them)

I really hope tumblr extends that 'commenting from different blogs' thing to asks, because I keep sending in prompts and requests, and I get the feeling that the dots have not connected.

VADD stuff, in which I attempt to fix a few faults in the writings of the novel
Hello VADD fans of tumblr, welcome to this little series of mine where I attempt to fix a few wrongs within our favorite novel and manhwa of all, Villains Are Destined To Die.
This is Part 1 of idk-how-long-this-serie-will-last-but-most-likely-until-I-grew-bored
In this post, I will attempt to fix why Callisto, our favourite unhinged crown prince, is attracted to Penelope in the first place.
Because let's be honest, the real reason why that was stated (interestingness and "not like other noble girls" or sumshiet) in the novel is pretty...a big no
Note: This isn't to say the story was bad or anything. In fact I love it! But there's definitely a few things I'd like either removed or fixed and I'm sure plenty of you can agree
This is lazily done in one sitting so keep that in mind. And also the things I wrote in this post will lead up to season two of the manhwa
NOW ON WITH THE SHOOOWW!
Imma throw this outta the way to make this clear. Callisto was not captivated by Siyeon!Penny's looks, only when she "confessed her love" to him.
Hearing them made Callisto dumbfounded, enough to pull him out of his stupor and lift his mood a bit because for whatever reason hearing someone profess their "love" to him with his blade on their neck is hilarious (weird humor but okay)
He eventually pulled his blade out, pretending to buy her lies and asked why she fell for him. Of course no excuses worked at the time.
Callisto could just let Penelope be after that, saying he knew she was lying to save her life but won't kill her. However, she is the daughter of the Eckhart Duchy, with the Duke as head of the neutral faction. Having the Eclhart on his side essentially meant all the other houses in the neutral faction would side with him as well, giving him the support needed to secure his ascension to the throne as Emperor. Thus, Callisto gave Penelope some time to think about why she "fell in love" with him in the first place. A pretext that serves as an excuse for him to see Penelope again and reel in the Neutral faction to support him.
Fast forward to the hunting competition, Callisto met Penelope again. Callisto asked if Penelope had figured it out yet and you guys know what happened next.
Callisto was in quite a predicament then. How will he be supposed to gain more support to secure his ascension?
And then giant giant cutesy danger birbs. Then Penny being a BAMF. Then the culprits were revealed, Penelope asked for the children to be left under Winter's care and you know the drill by now.
Then we moved onto the actual hunting of the competition. Callisto showed up and teased Penelope about the pendant, with a goal in mind to try to be in her good grace somehow, despite the clear line she drew between them both. And also he does NOT know how to casually befriend someone.
But actually?
He found her company somewhat...okay?
He didn't know what to think of the "Mad Dog" of the rumors at the time, since he approached her with ulterior motives. But the company is much more tolerable compared to any other noblewomen, so he can appreciate that.
Then the cave scene.
When Callisto led them to safety in a random cave, he looked after Penelope until she woke up. During that time, he noticed just how...small...she was...
Figuratively and literally.
She was far too thin and frail, yet she managed to survive and shoot down the giant cutesy birds from the night before, the bear AND the assassins all on her own just fine.
It was admirable, really. But seeing the princess of Eckhart unconscious and vulnerable like this, it made him feel odd somehow.
Familiar in a way.
And looking back at the events today, he realized.
Ah.
She reminded Callisto of himself when he was a child.
Small and vulnerable.
It felt foreign somehow, he didn't know what to think of these new thoughts of his. He decided to fetch some firewood inside the cave.
The Lady woke up. They had a bit of bantering before she went to sleep.
Callisto stayed awake a little longer and mulled over his thoughts of the princess.
Her company was enjoyable. The moments between them, however brief, were by far the most peaceful moments of his life since his mother's passing.
Still he tried to remind himself that he approached Penelope to fulfill his goal, not because of something as measly as friendship.
Penelope woke up again, shivering and quaking uncontrollably. Seeing her in such a state...reminded him more and more of his younger self.
Without thinking twice, the Crown Prince reached out to her and tried to offer her comfort, or whatever he could offer at the time.
And perhaps, as a way to help him heal somewhat, mused about his past to the Eckhart Princess.
Her reactions were a bit...well unexpected, but there seemed to be this look of understanding in her eyes somehow? Though he might be seeing things due to the poison slowly spreading in him.
Soon it was time for them to sleep, and somehow he thought he might be able to have one restful night for once.
Y'know what?
Perhaps once Callisto secured his ascension, it wouldn't be too bad to maintain this bond with the princess and be a little more honest.
Yes that alone should be fine

Machine Maintenance
My knitting carriage was having some trouble gliding easily so I thought I’d give it a good rub down with my Singer All Purpose Machine Oil to see if it might fix it. Of course, I had to watch my favorite TV show while I worked! Any guesses as to what I’m watching 🧐
To get into the tight spots, I recommend using cotton swabs. Be sure to only apply a light coating of oil and wipe away any excess before resuming knitting. Excess oil will get onto your yarn as well as gunk up your knitting machine over time. I concentrated the most on moving pieces as well as the rails that the carriage slide on.
When oiling your machine, it is also a good idea to take a moment to check that all pieces are moving smoothly and freely.

One Last Chance - Prologue
Synopsis: Ice hadn't expected to go to heaven when he died, he certainly hadn't expected to wake up in the body of his 26-year-old self. He hadn't expected sacrificing eveything to try the chance of saving Goose. But he had his own kid to raise now. Iceman in a ruthless Time Loop
Master list
Tumblr media
Ice couldn’t help but wonder if this was a punishment of some kind. He had done some things in his career he wasn’t proud of, but this was a new type of hell. He hadn’t expected to be standing in front of a newly recanted Goose, who grinned at him bantering with Slider.
“Mother Goose” the man rolled his eyes at the title, Ice couldn’t hear anything except the buzzing in his ears as a young version of Maverick approached them. He knew Goose was introducing them, it happened as it did all those years ago, this couldn’t be happening. This had to be some sort of sick nightmare he came up with to punish himself.
Expect you couldn’t dream when you were dead. He knew that its why he was so stumped. He had no idea why he had suddenly woken up that morning in the body of his 26-year-old self, he had assumed it was a memory playing itself out. But his dreams never lasted this long.
His guilt for incidentally causing Goose, Maverick’s beat friend, Bradly’s father’s death had always haunted him. Often plaguing him at night, more after he got sick again. To the point where he stopped sleeping and Sarah couldn’t do anything but watch as he faded, he didn’t have Mav to hold his hand anymore. He was selfish for wanting the man by his side in his last moments, his wingman.
Maverick was looking at him expectantly, expecting the quip that was normally on the edge of his tongue instead he stared silently at the man before throwing back the rest of his vodka and leaving. He heard Slider and Goose call after, but he used the business of the O-Club to his advantage nodding to the bartender and walking out. He couldn’t do this again, not now.
Slider found him later of cause, the man was a bloodhound. He sat down next to him silently as he sat on the beach staring out at the roaring waves. “Do you want to talk about it?” Slider asked breaking the silence, he wanted to say no. Instead, he said, “He reminds me of my wingman”. Slider didn’t need to probe, he knew Tom had lost a wingman before him, he had never gone into detail besides calling him his wingman. But he knew how much the loss had devastated Tom, he was the Iceman for a reason. He became Ice-cold, without his wingman to even him out.
Slider stayed by his side until the moon was well into the sky before the RIO groaned and stood, “Come on, Tom” the man said quietly, “We have class tomorrow”. He allowed the man to pull him and lead him back to the house they were sharing. Maybe if he went to sleep this nightmare would end. He thought hopefully.
It didn’t, he thought in despair. It didn’t end, he woke up the next morning to Slider yelling at him to get up and ready before they were late. He couldn’t be bothered to look presentable, the pride he once had in his youth at being impeccably dressed had faded. What is the point when you’re going to die anyway?
Ron stalled in the hallway when he stepped out to meet him the man pressed his lips together, “No, go change” the man challenged him. He wouldn’t let his friend fall apart over a man, over a memory.
Tom stared him down before silently returning to his room for his iron pressed uniform he had arranged last night, taking time to fix his hair, and stepped up beside Ron as the man rushed him out the door into the truck, he didn’t miss the man’s glances.
Looking at him was painful, they both were. Knowing he would be a murder soon, knowing he had single handily ripped Mav soul apart because he was too stubborn to let him get the point. Over a dam trophy, he thought. He killed over a trophy.
Ron sat next to him as their CO talked about the manuvers they would be doing, he blocked him out he knew what they were doing aready. He hadn’t forgotten in the 30 years he had been gone. Ron had practically forced a pen in his hand and some paper before starting his own notes. Ice’s page remained untouched in front of him on the desk, it made him nauseous.
Today they would be dog fighting, hop 1.
30 more hops and he would be one classmate short.
He slid into the piolet seat, body moving purely on auto piolet as he flew the outdated jet. Don’t let him get to you. He didn’t respond to anyone’s jests, he silent followed them through the sky. Their wingman, never failing to protect them. Even if it put him in a situation where he was shot down, he stayed silent when he landed. When he was called into his CO office when his friend opened his mouth as if to say something but stopped himself.
Say something, anything. He almost wanted to bed, Slider who had been his best friend for years practically an extension of his own hand, couldn’t even speak to him. His heart ached; he missed the friendship they used to have. The man had never forgiven him for hiding his sickness and avoiding the man, he couldn’t put his RIO through that. Not after what he witnessed with Mav; it was selfish. He could see that now, his pained and foggy head had thought it would help the man mourn, instead he was taking away the man’s choices.
“Iceman, you’re a good piolet. One of the best we have here, you have a phenomenal record. Why are you hesitating?” his CO asked, because when I fly my way people get killed.
“Don’t push the other graduates away, you never know where they will eb your wingman out there” His CO continued oblivious to the mental struggle Ice was having.
“I had a wingman” his voice was flat in the deathly silent room, the man bowed his head “I apologise for the loss of Lt Simpson, and the little boy he left behind”, Ice’s jaw clenched this man hadn’t known them he had no right, no right! to offer sympathy’s as if they were friends.
“Are we done here?” it was curt and outright disrespectful, he added it mainly to piss off the man “Sir”. His Co just signed and waved a hand dismissing him, he didn’t waste time stepping out of the office. His hand already digging into his pocket for his phone as he stepped out onto a semi quiet part of the deck. There were fewer deck hands it was almost quiet; he thumbed the phone as three little dots appeared then a smiling little face of a familiar little boy.
“Uncle Ice!” Beau beamed, he was missing a tooth and his hair was fuzzy no doubt from his mother who spent every moment she could to disrupt it getting endless entertainment as the boy he decided he must always be presentable like Uncle Ice.
He swallowed hard at the right of his wingman’s child, his first wingman. His best friend, he had practically helped raise Beau. “Hey little man” he greeted with a small smile, “Mum! Uncle Ice is on the phone!” he heard the boy yell out as the by began babbling about how he built a new jet figure and how he wanted to show Ice when he came back when his mother stepped into frame. She took one looked at him and gently placed a hand on Beau’s shoulder “honey why don’t you go play with your toys in your bedroom while your uncle and I talk?” Beau looked at her for a moment then nodded, he was always a smart boy. Understanding when privet conversations needed to occur, “Bye Uncle Ice, love you!” the boy smiled before running off.
“What happened?” she asked sitting down in front of the camera, he bit his lip softly and he could feel his eyes stinging, welling with tears as he let his head ‘thunk’ back on the metal wall behind him. “Oh Tom,” she said softly, neither of them had to say it, they both understood. They missed him, they had both loved him and lost him. “I’m so sorry Simone, I’m so sorry”, he wasn’t there for his wingman when he needed him the most, he wasn’t there to bring Beau’s father home.
She smiled sadly, “He would be so proud of you”.
