Cocatriz Pena-veloz/ Fleetfeather Cockatrice

Fleetfeather Sandals– Wondrous item, uncommon (requires attunement)
From a distance, these sandals have an appearance similar to scale armor, but a closer inspection reveals the front of the sandals have been decorated with layered feathers. While wearing the sandals, you gain a +5 bonus to initiative rolls, and whenever you roll initiative, you gain a flying speed of 60 feet until the end of your first turn.

// I had the worst luck with drawing cards in my last round of LoR - expedition mode with a mostly Fiora-themed deck. I had a Fleetfeather Tracker, which is an early-game friendly card but I had no other units to put out to give it Challenger.
But I did have spell cards. Boy did I have spell cards. I had no choice but to barrier and buff this thing and desperately hold on to this tiny 1 mana bird, hoping I’d draw SOMETHING ELSE. I was sure I was gunna lose.
I barriered that poor bird so much, and by end game I think I buffed it and gave it Chainmail and it was something like 10 attack and 5 health and wtf I won.
Thank you for carrying me smol eagle friend.

Krenko’s Guide to Creature Types: Cockatrice

Art by Kev Walker
What is a Cockatrice (flavorfully)?
A cockatrice is a bird-lizard that hatches from an egg laid by a rooster if it’s incubated by a toad. If it looks you in the eyes, you die. If you touch it, you die. If it breathes on you, you die. Sometimes, instead of dying, you turn to stone. This isn’t really any better.
What is a Cockatrice (mechanically)?
There are only three Cockatrices, and they all have flying and deathtouch. CMC 4-5, Power 2 or 3… They’re pretty consistent, which is simple enough because there’s only three of them.

Can I make a Cockatrice deck?
No. There’s only three of them. And only one is any good.
Is Cockatrice a good creature type?
I mentioned back during Basilisk that Cockatrices and Basilisks are basically the same thing, and I stand by that. Having a separate Cockatrice creature type is wasteful and stupid. Whatever else happens, these three need to be folded into Basilisk.
Now, I also said I might want to fold Basilisk into Snake or Lizard. If that was the case, I’d then go and fold Cockatrice into Chimera.
Look, Cockatrices are dumb. Cockatrices have always been dumb. This isn’t Wizards’ fault. Cockatrices were dumb hundreds of years ago. One wound up in Alpha because it’s a classic creature, and we could’ve all gone and forgotten about it but then they made two more. Deathgaze Cockatrice and Fleetfeather Cockatrice don’t even look like rooster-snakes. Wizards was aware that Cockatrices are dumb and made two more anyway, but when you fix them to not be awful, they stop being cockatrices.

#Krenko's Guide#Cockatrice#mtg#basilisk#incredibly stupid creatures that exist in Magic solely because they come from medieval mythology#I don't even know why I hate them so much#I just do#They're so dumb

How about Winged Coalt and Fleetfeather Cockatrice?
I think rate is part of this. The cockatrice is costly enough and the body just big enough that I think it could perhaps be mono green if you removed flying from it. My hunch is that it would maybe be ok for green to have like a 4/4 flash deathtouch at an appropriate cost (though there are reasons you mostly wouldn’t do this design anyway).
The coatl being a tiny body at a relatively cheap mana value makes it a lot closer to Murder than a creature in my estimation. Despite the multicolor justifying each aspect of it I think it feels more like a black card anyway.
Is Ambush Viper (green flash deathtouch 2/1) a break?
I believe so.
#mark#convo#definitely an interesting conundrum#feel isn't always a bad thing in figuring out what a card is#but it does seem a bit inadequate here#despite it being like half of my argument#aside from rate

old art part 2
why did we shade the old references and use the same bg

(more old art below cut)

Notes:
troutpaw being poly is now... not really canon. it was based off an idea that kinda faded away. maybe she is? idk
ferretpatch was probably canon and probably in creekclan, we just don't know where he is in the family tree
splashspirit and gale have 2 more kits, Jaggedsun (dead) and wolffall
flintfeather is now fleetfeather because a cat in heron's Crossing already exists with the "flint" prefix (flintfoot)
finchwish is now kitewish because there is already Finchstar

I know it's probably early but I went ahead and preordered two Gideon of the Trials and an Oketra. Two Gideon's now, two with my next paycheck. Oketra is for Odric and I think I'll take out Deathless Angel for her. I took out Chariot of Victory for Fleetfeather Sandals. With that, Odric will now have the same number of instances of Flying and Indestructible without having to pay into the latter, as well as another outlet for Double Strike and Haste. Also, if I need Flying, I now have a tutorable target for it whereas I didn't before.

Ensemblester
It makes sense, before you start your mystical learning, to pick up a magic accessory to shore up your power. Some people get carried away and forget to get around to studying magic.
[ ][ ][ | ] Hat of the Magician – You have a big floppy wizard's hat, which of course you can pull a great many things out of. Whenever you reach into your hat, roll a d6 and consult the table below for what you find. At second level, you may nudge the result up or down by 1. At third level, you may nudge it by up to 2. The GM should feel free to come up with some random item tables of their own to augment this.
-1: An object of your choice
0-1: A weapon of your choice
2: A weapon of the GM's choice
3: A harmless item of the GM's choice
4: A small critter of the GM's choice
5: A tool or useful item of the GM's choice
6-7: A tool or useful item of your choice
8: An object or your choice
[ ][ ][ ] Cloak of Wonders – You possess a marvellous cloak, which billows impressively when necessary regardless of the wind. For each level of Cloak of Wonders, add one of the following effects:
Comfort – Your cloak is proof against all extremities of environment. It will keep you warm in the cold, keep out intense heat, keep you dry in a downpour, protect from the ravages of a sandstorm, and generally keep you well kept.
Invisibility – Your cloak can turn invisible at will, also concealing anything inside it. This does not make you invisible, so you must move carefully not to have any of your extremities leave the cloak to avoid detection.
Teleport – By swathing yourself in your cloak, you can teleport to any spot you can perceive.
[ | ][ | ][ | ] Spelltrapper Jewels – You have jewellery adorned with spelltrapper gems, which can contain spells and allow you to cast them later. If you can physically intercept the path of a spell with the jewel or lock the caster's eyes on the jewel, the spell being cast is countered and trapped in the jewel. You may release it at any point after d6 rounds, casting the spell at the level it was captured at. Each jewel can only contain one spell at a time. You have a number of jewels equal to your level of Spelltrapper Jewels.
[ ][ | ] Truesight Spectacles - You have a pair of glasses with enchanted lenses that enhance your vision. At first level, you gain a d6 bonus to visual perception rolls, and can see through non-magical walls. At second level, you gain a d6 bonus to overcome visual illusions and see invisible things.
[ ][ | ][ ][ ] Fleetfeather Boots – You have a pair of boots, possibly adorned with actual wings or with a wing motif, that allow you to move at great speeds. At first level, you can match pace with a horse and gain a d6 bonus to rolls made to leap and dodge. At second level, you gain the ability to fly for five minutes per day per level of Fleetfeather Boots.
[ ][ ] Quick Change – You don't always want to be wearing your gaudy magical gear. You can change your entire outfit in one round, and can pull your magical ensemble out of thin air while you do so. At second level, you can take a turn to transfer the magic from one of your items to another item of the same type.

Anekai - Owl Monk
I was inspired by other art I saw on the internet and had to make a new character for a campaign anyway, so Anekai Fleetfeather was born. She is a maneuver master (unchained) monk, and I can’t wait to give her a go this weekend.
