Feature Fridays are back, and today I bring you none other than Garlic! There is a lot of misinformation going around about this humble little bulb, and while some bodies just don’t absorb it properly (some people do require a low FODMAP diet), this pungent little member of the Allium family has lots of benefits for the rest of us! Garlic’s medicinal use has been documented for a very long time by the the Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans and Chinese. Now we know  that its healing powers come from sulphur compounds such as diallyl disulfide, s-allyl cysteine, and allicin. The latter is an unstable compound that is only briefly present in fresh garlic after it’s been cut or crushed, so fresh garlic is the way to go if you want to reap all the benefits of garlic! Garlic is well known for reducing the frequency and severity of colds. One large, 12-week study found that a daily garlic supplement reduced the number of colds by 63% compared to a placebo  The average length of cold symptoms was also reduced by 70%, from 5 days in the placebo group to just 1.5 days in the garlic group. Garlic is also helpful for managing blood pressure, and reducing LDL (the “bad”) cholesterol. Human studies have found garlic supplements to have a significant impact on reducing blood pressure in people with high blood pressure In one study, 600–1,500 mg of aged garlic extract was just as effective as the drug Atenolol at reducing blood pressure over a 24-week period. For those with high cholesterol, garlic supplements appear to reduce total and/or LDL cholesterol by about 10–15%. Lastly, Garlic contains antioxidants that protect against cell damage and aging. This thuthuvalai (a herb) rasam is very effective in treating cold, cough, sinus and other respiratory problems. The good thing is that this herb can be easily grown at home.
