Week 4: Jams at CVS by Mister M

My previous trip was at Dean & DeLuca the pinnacle of “haute cuisine” in Georgetown. This week I decided to keep it more impromptu and spontaneous and shopped at the CVS store on Pennsylvania Avenue at the center of the Foggy Bottom area.                                                       
The CVS Pharmacy is a subsidiary of the American retail and health care company CVS Health. Currently, CVS Pharmacy is the largest pharmacy chain in the United States with over 10,000 stores. CVS sells prescription drugs and a wide assortment of general merchandise, including over-the-counter medications, beauty products, cosmetics, seasonal merchandise, home health care products, food, and healthcare services in its medical mini-clinics. Products at CVS are usually more expensive compared to other supermarkets as the prices reflect and incorporate the expenses for the convenience of the CVS location and the 24-hour availability.
This was my first time searching for jams at this specific CVS store as I usually buy them at either Whole Foods or Trader Joes. I went to the CVS store on Penn Avenue for jam-hunting on Wednesday at around 5pm after finishing all my schoolwork. Honestly, I found it hard to find the jam section at CVS. Instinctively, I knew they would be located on the first floor, but it took me more time than I expected to find them. As I entered the store from 21st street I immediately turned to the right and after spending at least 10 minutes walking around the store, I finally found them. They were located on aisle 15 at the “Cereal, Coffee, Groceries” section.
Like at many other stores, jams are located together with peanut butter and honey. This time, however, jams occupy only half a shelf. Obviously, jams here are not organic or GMO free and are only made from grapes, strawberries, and oranges compared to the more exotic jams at Whole Foods and Dean & DeLuca.  
All the jams at CVS are in plain see-through big and bulky plastic or glass jars with very simple labels on them. Prices are also very average ranging from $3.39-$4.69 pre-tax. After I made my small research on the costs, tags, and labels I tried to walk around the store and pay attention to the people who would stop and buy any. To my surprise, not even one person stopped to buy any jams or jellies within almost thirty minutes.
So, this week’s conclusion from a jam connoisseur: CVS needs to promote the jams more effectively and better label them if it really wants to profit from them.

Sočna i čokoladna brownie torta sa novim proizvodom iz @dr.oetker_srbija linije, Brownie smešom za kolače. . Sastojci: 1 kesica Dr. Oetker Brownies smeše za kolače 3 jajeta 100ml ulja 50ml vode 200ml slatke pavlake 120ml mleka 100g kristal šećera 300g čokolade za kuvanje 120g maslaca 2 kašike Dr. Oetker Arome vanile prstohvat soli . Pripremiti Brownies prema uputstvu sa pakovanja: U posudu za mućenje sipati sadržaj kesice, dodati 3 jajeta, 100ml ulja i 50ml vode. Mikserom mutiti dok se ne dobije glatko testo. Pripremljeno testo sipati u dva kalupa (prečnika 19cm), oko 360g smese po jednom kalupu, prethodno podmazanih i obloženih papirom za pečenje. Peći u donjoj trećini prethodno zagrejane rerne na 160C oko 20-25 min. Prohladiti kore par minuta pa ih izvaditi iz kalupa i ostaviti po strani. Pripremite fil tako što ćete u šerpu sipati slatku pavlaku, mleko i šećer i ostaviti ih da proključaju. Šerpu skinuti sa ringle, dodati u nju čokoladu sitno naseckanu, maslac naseckan na kockice, vanilu i so i povremeno promešati. Kada su se sastojci otopili i dobro sjedinili uzmite veću posudu u koju ćete naliti ledenu vodu i u nju položite šerpu. Mikserom mutite smesu oko 5 minuta kako bi se smesa brže rashladila ( po potrebi menjajte ledenu vodu kako se ugreje). Smesu nakon mućenja ostavite u frižideru dok temperatura fila ne padne ispod 20C. Primetićete da će se fil hlađenjem zgusnuti, ali ne previše, sve vreme će biti kremast nalik pudingu. Odmah nakon hlađenja nafilujte kore sa filom, kora/fil/kora/fil i ukrasite po želji, ukoliko se fil previše lepi znači da se ugrejao, samo ga ostavite na kratko u frižideru i biće bolji za rad. I probably should not have a jar of strawberry jam every week but certainly it is worth the “5-week all around DC groceries” experience. For this week’s blog, I have decided to go to Trader Joe’s.  You might not be able to do all of your grocery shopping there, but no other place offers affordable, all natural, organic, and often local products, which all taste incredible.
Trader Joe’s is one of the most progressive and inclusive store chains. Historically, Trader Joe’s found success by anticipating the needs of its customers. Their unconventional culturally-tailored approach and attitude is one that is embedded in their business model: from their packaging, product selection, store layout and graphics, to their vendors, employees and management.
Additionally, they offer the most consumer-friendly monthly newsletter, titled The Fearless Flyer (for which I am obviously subscribed), which shares recipes, product origin stories and other non-traditional insights. They are passionate about introducing something new that in turn challenges potentially new and existing vendors to remain active in their innovation efforts.
Back to jams. I visited Trader Joe’s on a Thursday afternoon at 5:30pm. Jams are located near the entrance of the store so it is very easy to find them. What really sparked my attention, however, was how small the jam section at Trader Joe’s was. Now, in terms of how the jars are positioned: as seen in the pictures on page 5 there is a peanut butter section and canned tuna section next to jams.
Interestingly, the jam section occupies only the bottom five shelves of the segment with jars of salted caramel occupying almost completely the bottom shelf, whereas the top two are occupied with honey. There is no particular order or pattern of their position on the shelves but rather they are positioned by brand and color of the sticker on the jar. Trader Joe’s offers a smaller variety of jams and marmalades compared to Whole Foods. Most of the jams are made from strawberries, apricots, peaches, and figs. Jams are in big, glass jars and, as in Whole Foods, have rustic and homemade labels on them depicting scenes of simple provincial life.
I spent approximately 20 minutes walking around the store and noticed that many people have stopped at this section. People appearing from different socio-economic spectrums, races, single people, couples, young and old were all trying to stop and buy a jar of jam. I needed one too!
Overall, my experience at Trader Joe’s has been very positive and exciting. I even got a Peach Bellini jam which is ideal for a refreshing mozzarella salad (at least that’s what the label says). My next stop will be at the fancy Dean & DeLucastore in Georgetown. See you next week!
