Thoughts on Toshiro’s eating behavior, restrictive ed/disordered eating habits, and ARFID (obvious warnings apply).

Been thinking about how Toshiro’s eating is described in the manga. Especially when you consider the context within which he snaps — which is jokingly referred to as “he has hangry”. Interestingly enough, emotional deregulation IS a common symptom of EDs. That, alongside all the symptoms that Ryoko Koi chooses to illustrate in him… it’s done too accurately for it to be dismissed as him simply choosing not to eat and starve, as if it were that easy.

Basically, I think Toshiro’s inability to eat is ARFID-coded, and that’s symbolism in itself. I also think food is one of the few areas in his life where he exerts control effectively.

Assuming that he was under the influence of the dungeon (not necessary for this analysis to work tbh), his behavior is a quite accurate depiction of how desire works for people who are chronic ascetics in general, and ED'd in particular:

According to Maizuru, he’s a person who's denied themselves all their life (“saving Falyn was his first selfish request“),

Who seems to only experience a sort of self-agency when it's linked to deprivation (not really eating food from anyone who wasn’t Maizuru as a child, turning down her food as an adult even though he’s otherwise easy to pull around),

Who's actively reaching towards something for the first time in their lives (so he doesn’t know how to work towards it without burning himself out).

A common trigger (perhaps the main one) in EDs is the desire for control. The logic often goes, what's easier to control than what you eat? what do you own more fully than your body? It tracks in Toshiro’s case: when he is picky that's one thing he can fully control, no one could force him to eat not when he was a child nor as an adult. Toshiro's “whims” are most indulged when he restricts or rejects food, rather than when he reaches for it.

The reason why I’m getting ARFID vibes from him is Maizuru’s wording. On the screenshot I shared, she said “he never ate much, but he ate plenty of what I made”, making it sound like he’d try stuff made by other people, but in the end, Maizuru was the only one who could tailor it to his tastes the best (and made it with love). Rather than fighting him or forcing him, he worked with him, which is the best course of action for parents with kids who are being picky eaters.

There’s also the wording used by Maizuru: I think he's ARFID and perhaps ortho coded, or some other restrictive ED. Here we have to note that EDs aren't exclusively or even always about weight, weight is often a secondary effect of the behaviors that are motivated by the ED. In layman terms, they're eating disorders not weight disorders.

With the established, I do see a narrative relevance to giving Toshiro this type of relationship with food:

It sets him in obvious opposition to Laios: You need to eat and take care of yourself to succeed, neglecting yourself equals not taking your goals seriously vs. I’ll sacrifice everything recklessly, myself included, in the pursuit of my goals.

Tangentially related but lol, can’t help but think of Laios getting SO mad when Toshiro’s reaction to his plan (admittedly thought of on the spot) to get back Falyn is “you aren’t even EATING” which, SO fair, you can strategize and make detailed long term plans all you want, but as they say the secret to your future lies within your daily habits.

It makes him a mirror of Falyn, her passiveness reflecting Toshiro’s own. Falyn explicitly says at the end of her adventure, while she’s turning down Toshiro’s marriage proposal, “I’ve always wanted to travel; I’ve always just done what my bother and Marcille want, I want to try doing what I want now”, which is reminiscent of Maizuru saying “He was always such a well-behaved, reasonable boy, so much so that it worried me sometimes. The only time he ever made a personal request was for this task” <- person disconnected from their desires. (More on this idea here, I love it as a narrative choice).

And then (here’s where I get suppositional). It could be an extrapolation of the way his upbringing has permeated so deep within himself that he overtly controls what he eats even under normal circumstances. This extreme exertion of self-control, this constant self-monitoring, would be unsurprising in the guy who’s a little too good at following social scripts and masking (fun fact, did you know that ARFID is often co-morbid with autism?).

I often think of him in this scene, where he seems to be telling Senshi that he’s had enough / he doesn’t want something (featuring the other Weird With Food character, my beloved Kabru, maybe trying to help him? or maybe hassling him too lol):

Looks like some habits are hard to break. But, Laios does get through to him when he kicks his ass, and Falyn seems to have reached him too with his words, so perhaps there’s hope.

Look at him forcing himself to eat a burger while holding so much distaste in his heart. Did he and Laios order for each other? At least Laios seems to like his meal.

Itachi

he was super on board from day one, like yes hello fellow villains, I too am a fellow villain, if this is how we aim to distinguish ourselves from other ninja, by all means

he didn't get it right from the start, but he practiced A Lot, and figured out what works and what doesn't, because painting your nails is a skill, just like making perfect eggs for your little brother

and it was only a matter of time until Itachi was able to perfect every aspect of the thing

it's an absolute mystery how it happens but his one coat lasts for ages on his nails, Itachi is the second slowest at using up a whole bottle after Kakuzu, who silently appreciates this

Deidara's reaction to Itachi's flawless mani: "being careful not to flood your cuticles is overrated, un"

he rather likes the color, it's soothing, he's glad he wasn't assigned red to match his sharingan, it would look a bit too much like blood, and he doesn't need any reminder of the blood on his hands, thank you very much shfjfsfdsfs

and it's actually a fun activity, it's challenging enough to demand complete focus even when you're good at it, Itachi learned fast that you make a mess if you let your mind wander, so it provides a small but much needed break for his overactive brain

in a better world Itachi would have liked to discover this fun little thing in a different way and maybe Sasuke would have liked to learn to do his nails too, red probably - this is a world where red means tomatoes, not blood - and he could already imagine his lil bro asking him to teach him better clean-up skills and--

so he procrastinates, acts like he forgot, or he lost his bottle, but it always reappears like magic before Kakuzu can hold him accountable lmao

as soon as Itachi realizes the truth though, that alarm goes off in his head that puts him in unstoppable mode. his mission? make Kisame understand that there's nothing wrong with how he looks

so Itachi asks Kisame to let him do his nails too. for practice. there's always more room for practice. and it's such a powerful shade of purple, it suits Kisame perfectly, it looks great on him

Kisame tries to deflect the compliment, but then Itachi shows him purple flowers by the shore, and how beautiful that looks, and, ... okay. okay.

and that's how Kisame ends up with perfectly polished fingernails and toenails that he's proud of

it's an unspoken thing, the same way that Kisame says he's tired when it's very obvious that Itachi should rest but he'll never say so himself, and it's obvious to both of them what game they're playing

it's a peaceful ritual, they talk about all kinds of things, get to know each other, read between the lines, so on, so forth, and at least for a short while they can both pretend all is well

after a while Itachi shows signs of his health worsening, and then it's Kisame's turn to practice - "if you keep doing stuff for other people, they don't get to practice doing it themselves, don't you agree, Itachi-san? :D :D" and there's no way around it, Itachi lets Kisame do his nails

by now Kisame learned what to do just by watching Itachi do it so many times, if he gets polish on Itachi's fingers he knows how to clean it up properly too so they look exactly as if Itachi had done them himself

Kisame is sure that every "mistake" Itachi ever made was just to show him how to fix it but shh that's part of the secretly taking care of each other game

after Itachi's gone Kisame doesn't really wanna talk about it, but sometimes when he thinks no one's looking he checks his mani and he's like, "yep, Itachi-san was right, this color looks great on me" and grins because what else can he do lmao, what else can he do

Vox is all about moving forward with the future, but he's always stuck in the past. He obessessing over a past his relationship with someone who seemed rather disinterested in what you do now, almost as if what they had before didn't matter in the slightest.

In fact, he's so stuck in the past that he went theough the trouble and budget to make segments of himself from the different periods of his afterlife, all of them having tvs to represent the decade they come from.

He hates himself so much to the point that he wilinglh split parts of his couscousness and memories to the segments, just so he can have the ability to hate himself in his own face and in an attempt to bury that past. But of course, since Vox is also obsessed with being in the know, he can't completely get rid of the memories he oh so ever despises.

He always tells himself that he made them for personal use and to make his work load less overloaded, but since his emotions can be felt by the segments, all of them know that its a load of horse shit.

No one can know about this, not even the other vees, Vox tells himself. No one can know how much he's hung up in the past that it manifests in the form of mechanical copy of your past life.

Ramona I think has a bit of a more gentle hand with reassuring Scott with gender issues, but sometimes she just can't help herself from some pointed banter or teasing- how could you with someone so dense? (Said w affection)

And then Kim I think is more blunt. But like, in a good way mostly, you know? The kinda blunt that makes you snap to attention and go "Oh. Yeah that was silly of me." And if Ramona's started some sort of banter? Kim is SO piling on. Maybe sometimes she's a bit TOO blunt with it- but it's only because she's so firm in her support. She wants Scott to Get It Together- and be happier for it. So if some ribbing now and again is in order, then goddamnit she will do so! Anything to crack that shell.

What are your opinions about Nico/Al and Percy/Al

Do not let my meta fool you I am a rogue demigods fan first and person second. I love Alabaster. I do not interact enough with the rogue demigods/Titan Army side of the fandom for the amount of thoughts I have about them 😔

As for Alabaster ships - I have heard much about Nico/Alabaster and I think it's very fun and cute. In my Nico Ship Survey it by far swept for most popular Nico/Minor Character ship. I generally think Nico/Minor Character ships tend to be very fun and interesting, I love the minor characters, I love the rogues, and throwing Nico with another rogue and/or another chthonic demigod is always very [chef's kiss] for me.

As for Percy/Al, well. I did fully intentionally make my Alabaster design mirror my Percy design.

(My main reason for doing so was cause I thought it'd be funny for Al to hate Percy and then to learn that Percy also has a streak in his hair in the exact same spot and get SO pissed that Percy not only ruined his life but is also stealing his brand.)

But yeah I think it's very interesting! I love Percy getting to interact with demigods outside of the camps and I am always down for more rogue and/or Alabaster content. And again, nudge the chthonic demigods together, hell yes. No pun intended.

I just think Alabaster is neat. Let him do whatever he wants forever.

The Fablehaven crew at an amusement park:

-Seth is constantly just. Gone. Nobody knows where he ran off to, but he always finds everyone else within a few seconds of them starting to ask each other if they’ve seen him recently

-Bracken and Kendra spend an inordinate amount of time playing the carnival games. Kendra’s arms are steadily getting more and more full of stuffed animals

-Warren joins Bracken & Kendra at the carnival games for a bit, wins a prize, gives it to Vanessa, and then steers her away from the rest of the group to go and order way too many sugary treats for everyone to share

-Dale gets tired of losing track of Seth and threatens to put one of those child-proof wristbands on him which will connect both of their wrists so the kid can’t wander off anymore

-Tanu tells Dale to chill and let the kid be a kid. And then proceeds to put an AirTag in Seth’s shoulder-pack-thing that he carries around

-Warren tells Seth about the AirTag and helps the kid plant it in Tanu’s pocket

-Vanessa rides all of the huge rollercoasters

-Tanu joins Vanessa, Dale does ~not~

-Warren joins Tanu and Vanessa

-Tanu gets sick

-Seth takes Tanu’s place

-Bracken & Kendra do the typical cutesy couple-y things like riding on the carousel and the Ferris wheel at sunset

-Everyone figures out later that Seth kept disappearing to the bumper cars and go-karts and those rides that spin you around in circles at high speeds. He creams everyone at go-kart racing

-Dale takes pictures of everyone and makes sure everyone eats actual food and drinks water. #momfriend

-Tanu helps round everyone up at the end of the night, makes a comment about how Seth must’ve discovered the AirTag, doesn’t see Warren scoff, and Seth pops up out of nowhere to ask everyone why they’re taking so long to get into the car

-Overall it’s chaos and fun and everyone has a great time

The smell of coffee hit Vaughn's nose immediately. Goro always knew exactly where to get him. Nothing like a fresh pot of Vaughn's favorite to start the day, even if the day was starting incredibly early. Vaughn wasn't even going to bother to check the time, Goro wanted him up for a reason..

Time came to a standstill the previous night. Earlier Vaughn had just returned from Dogtown, he even smelled like it. It was different, but Goro loved the smell of nature on his partner. It was enough to make Goro's thoughts wander. He and Vaughn hadn't had an ounce of alone time in what felt like months, and that may have even been true. But Vaughn's incredibly busy schedule and Goro's need to stay in NC drifted them apart but for good reason. Vaughn was desperate for merc work, he was desperate to get back out there and work now that he could have his combat implants back, thanks to Viktor. But he missed Goro more, he missed his touch, his missed his voice, he missed waking up next to him every morning and Goro sensed it. That night was a complete blur. Goro couldn't contain himself, the desperate need to touch Vaughn along with not having seen him in weeks was enough to make sure they didn't remember the next morning with just how intense being on each other was. The need to hold on to each other so tightly, skin on skin to the point where tears fell from Vaughn made time completely freeze. A release from them both which felt like it had lasted a lifetime, and thank god for that, because they didn't want it to end. Vaughn knew he couldn't leave again, at least not without Goro. He couldn't bare to be away from him for so long, and the morning after proved such, as waking up to the smell of his favorite coffee at what was most likely 6 A.M reminded him of just how lucky he was to have the love of his life there to take care of him and cherish him and make him feel whole. He had everything he could want, and he was never going to take it for granted.
