hey all! i am ill (boooooo 馃憥) and had to cancel my visit with friends this week to avoid getting them and anyone I鈥檇 encounter at the airport sick. I took my shops off vacation mode/ updated stock on my etsy for anyone shopping internationally and would appreciate anyone who checks them out! I have new acrylic charms and bumper stickers available that I am sooo happy with and proud of! (reminder that my three charm preorders close on August 21st) I might take advantage of being stuck at home and finish some quilting projects that have been laying around half finished :) my shop brings me a lot of joy and I鈥檓 happy to share my art in this way!
and remember that it鈥檚 never too late to start masking again! be safe and healthy

Most animals and plants never fossilize. For those that do, it's usually only hard parts such as bones and shells that preserve. However, in some exceptional cases, soft tissues such as muscles and gills survive the fossilization process and can present a wealth of information about the biology and ecology of ancient organisms. In a paper recently published in Palaeontologia Electronica, Dr. Adiel Klompmaker, University of Alabama Museums' curator of paleontology, and colleagues reported on a remarkable crab with multiple mineralized soft tissues preserved. This crab lived 75 million years ago during the Cretaceous in the area of present-day South Dakota in an ancient sea known as the Western Interior Seaway.

Ghost Shrimp (Silly Guy)
Ghost Shrimp聽(Palaemonetes spp.)
This transparent crustacean belongs to the聽Palaemonidae聽family and is commonly found in聽coastal waters, estuaries, and even freshwater habitats worldwide.

WAIT is that crab fossil really A Fossil??? It looks like cookie dough to me :/
Ahaha omg yeah it does!
While it's entirely possible, just like any fossil for sale, the crab may have been casted in resin or doctored, I couldn't verify (usually I need to see it in person unless there's something really off 馃槄), but fossils like these tend to be pretty common anyway.
The reason the crab looks like that is because it's preserved in travertine. Kind of like how your pipes and appliances might build up lime over time, so do natural areas sometimes, so things that fall into the environment get "coated" and end up looking like they're cookie dough or covered in batter :D
The Getty Center, for instance has a ton of fossils in its building stone that it likes to showcase, but it's possible to see something pop up in your average building material (like the guy who found a jawbone in his parents' floor tile a year ago)
