thoughts: my first dnf of the year, yay(!)
i'll be really honest, i wasn't looking forward to reading this. the description, paired with the author's own review over on goodreads, made me feel that it just wasn't gonna be my thing. unfortunately, i was right. i wanted to like it, especially as it was so kindly gifted to me by a friend, but it just missed the mark and could not capture my attention. once i realised it had taken me about 2 weeks just to hit the 100-page mark and i still wasn't captivated, it felt like a good time to call it quits.
the author called it "very slowburn" and yes, i would agree, but for me that wasn't a good thing. i was just bored out of my skull and it felt like not much of anything happened. the characters were dull. there were hints to backstories and things to be uncovered and i just didn't care about any of it. maybe if i'd continued it would have been worth the wait, but i think this book just wasn't for me. the reception seems to be middling so i don't think it's just a me thing, but i won't be rating it as i didn't get all that far in, and it didn't really evoke any feelings strong enough to give it an accurate rating. so unfortunately... dnf at 23% on this occasion, and i don't think i'll be giving it a second attempt.

doctorannakotova:
Sometimes it’s lovely to be the room where it happens.
I’m quite partial to Jamie Lloyd so I enjoyed a modern, stripped back (and seriously cut down to 1 hr 45!) take on Romeo and Juliet. @franarivers is a charismatic young lady and @tomholland2013 was a lovely Romeo.
Special kudos to the hilarious @freemaofficial.

There was a pause in the conversation and their eyes found each other and stayed there. The lost years hung heavy in the air. For the next hour, the two drank silently, taking each other in, reminding themselves of the other's movements and shape and voice.
That hour never fully ended - time moved on, but somewhere, they are still seated at that table, all new beginnings, finding each other again.
