I am extremely lenient with horror movies tbh for me to outright dislike one it essentially has to either bore me or feature unnecessary gratuitous rape/threats of rape--or be a bad remake.

The Silver Eye by Laura Hollingsworth (@ thesilvereye on tumblr)

“The Silver Eye began in 2009. It is an action-adventure webcomic of the Fantasy persuasion, written from a Christian worldview. Two rival royal families are always at odds. The conflict reaches a point where one child king, Apen, sacrifices himself and his country to prevent another war. This leads to some disastrous consequences. The story follows his journey to try to set things right, and if he’s going to do so, he has to work alongside members of his rival family.” (Description from the website)

TSE is my personal favorite, as anyone who’s stuck around my blog has probably already figured out lol. It updates on Fridays. (PG to occasional PG-13)

It’s a fantasy/adventure story that’s been running since 2020, updates weekly. I think it’s PG so far, may be soft PG-13 in the future.

Stand Still, Stay Silent by Minna Sundberg (Completed, 2013-2022) (tumblr @ hummingfluff)

"Stand Still. Stay Silent" is a post apocalyptic webcomic with elements from Nordic mythology, set 90 years in the future. It's a story about friendship and exploring a forgotten world, with some horror, monsters and magic on the side. 

It’s a really neat comic to read as an American because of all the Nordic languages and cultural elements present throughout. Warnings for horror elements/violence, maybe some language (I can’t remember for sure, it’s been awhile since I read it, could be blurred out or something) The author also has talked about her return to her faith/and her next comic is going to be overtly Christian (Journey Upstream) It started recently (Jan 2023)

The Outrunners are traveling peacekeepers tasked with assisting the citizens of the Vale. Their top priority: find the missing Prince of Andalusia. For Delica, it's not just her mission - it's her obsession. As she and her teammates travel the kingdom, they will discover more dangers (and mysteries) than they ever imagined.

I started reading this one really recently and quite like it so far, the art style is excellent. Updates Tuesdays, PG-13

Beatrice “Bea” Whaley seems to have it all; the seventeen year old high school senior is beautiful, wealthy and the star performer of the drama club. Bea begins having vivid dreams about a brave and handsome soldier named Alan Warren–a member of an elite group known as Knowlton’s Rangers that served during the Revolutionary War. Prone to keeping her head in the clouds, Bea welcomes her nightly adventures in 1776; filled with danger and romance they give her much to muse about the next day. But it is not long before Beatrice questions whether her dreams are simply dreams or something more. Each night they pick up exactly where the last one ended. And the senses–the smell of musket shots and cannons, the screams of soldiers in agony, and that kiss–are all far more real than any dream she can remember.

Hidden Gems by @potteresque-ire

Back to angsty hours, no hidden gems reclist would be complete without mentioning Pie. I can’t think of light angst without thinking of those gorgeous, heart aching pieces that stole my heart ever since I first read them a couple years ago. Pie’s works are among my favourite fics - I love the adult tone, the beautiful prose, the aching melancholy, the contemplative feel. It’s cathartic to be inside those universes and be allowed to just feel together with our sad boys. I’m amazed at how much character and sentiment Pie delivers with short fics, how deeply we get into the characters’ realities and dilemmas no matter the fic length, and the soft yearning Harry and Draco have for each other feels both palpable and real. Happy Friday!

Evolution (2016, M, 13k) - lovely and poetic comfort fic! Auror Harry, Janitor Draco, mutual pining, Draco in the Muggle World

Draco Malfoy was condemned to live a Muggle’s life for his three-year probation. His wand was locked away, and he was forbidden to set foot in Wizarding Britain until Hermione Granger secured a job for him in the Aurors’ stock room. Junior Auror Harry Potter frequently visited Draco to check out supplies, take Spanish lessons, and witness Draco’s resolute—if painful—adaptation to a non-magical life … while falling in love with the man who might be too fragile to love him back. Music and scheming owls would soon bring the two wizards together.

HISTORY;

TW drinking, husband death, domestic violence mention Tallulah Jean Owens wasn’t supposed to make it out of Dillon, TX let alone become the belle of the South. From the moment she was born, the odds were stacked against her, a beautiful wild flower born into a family of chaos. She was the only daughter of four unruly brothers. Her daddy was the local drunk, unable to cope with his time spent in Vietnam while her Momma was a failed pageant queen turned hairdresser making minimum wage. The Owens were trouble, trailer trash, and broke as hell with too many mouths to feed. But Tallulah was their meal ticket. Like her brothers, she had a wild soul but her natural beauty seemed to surpass it all. She was taught to wave and smile, wow the crowd with just the bat of her lashes. By the time Tallulah was six, she was entered into pageants all over the state. At first as a last resort, and to appease her mother’s failed dreams, and then because the girl actually had a knack for the stage and her winnings kept food on the table. Even if she was the dime store contestant draped in her mother’s repurposed hand-me downs while her competitors were dolled up by the pros and donned the latest fashion trends, there was something about the little girl in bedazzled riding boots hidden beneath layers of tulle that judges couldn’t get enough of, a quality that couldn’t be bought and one that earned Tallulah sponsorships that took her all the way to the big show. Tallulah went on to become Miss Teen Texas, Miss Teen America, Miss Texas three years in a row, and at long last the most coveted prize in the Beauty Pageant World. She was twenty- five when she secured her Miss America 2009 crown and caught the eye of James Calloway, cowboy casanova and heir to the Texas oil fortune. It didn’t matter that she may have been sort of into a guy she grew up with or that James would eventually urge to quit the pageant circuit. The family had old money, the kind that demanded respect and bought them class and prestige not to mention summer homes on the coast. Tallulah was no fool to pass that up. For a while, it was magic and they were in love. All roses and champagne, whirlwind rendezvous, and summers on the coast (the Cape May house was always Tallulah’s favorite). Much like the judges, the Calloways loved her, too. Church bells rang not long after she finished her Miss America tour, and they were married in the most lavish country wedding Texas had ever seen. Tallulah not only had a platform now, but access to more wealth she could wrap her head around. At James’ request, Tallulah retired from the pageant circuit to become his trophy wife and raise their daughter. She focused on her philanthropy specifically helping veterans return to civilian life after war, ran the junior league, mentored pageant girls, and was a prominent figure at the country club. From the outside, it all seemed perfect, but there were cracks in this Barbie and Ken, ones that Tallulah occasionally had to hide behind large designer sunglasses. Whiskey and jealousy were to blame, and eventually it got the better of her husband. There’s a certain mystery surrounding the specifics of his death. A part of Tallulah blames herself, that she didn’t stop him when he took the keys to the Mercedes three sheets to the wind. But in the end, she got everything. Widowed three years, Tallulah now resides in the Cape May house she inherited with her twelve year old daughter. She hopes to maintain a quiet life, use the Calloway money to grow the many charities she is involved in, and of course, for world peace. (tldr; church bells by Carrie Underwood gives you a pretty good gist. she’s straight out of a country song)

AESTHETICS;

Million dollar pageant smiles and practiced princess waves, bedazzled riding boots beneath layers of tulle skirts, glittering tiaras under a confetti explosion, cowgirl boots filled with flower bouquets, blue jean queen, country songs,1 oz whiskey 3 parts champagne, barefoot on the beach, oversized sunglasses, white cable knit sweaters, sipping sweet tea out of mason jars on a wrap around porch, more denim, and a fading butterfly tramp stamp

PERSONALITY;

RESILIENT (+): No matter what was thrown her way, broken family, alcoholic husband, daddy issues, Tallulah learned, for better or for worse, how to pick herself up from her riding boots and put on that million dollar smile of hers and wow the crowd. GENEROUS(+): Miss America gave Tallulah a platform and she was recently given access to her late husband’s fortune, so she certainly intends to use it all for good. She is very focused on her philanthropy, specifically helping veterans return to civilian life after war, running the junior league, mentoring prospective pageant girls, and being a prominent figure at the country club and her daughter’s school. MATERIALISTIC(-): Being thrust into the world of pageants at a young age, Tallulah can be superficial at time.s She loves keeping up with the latest fashions and treating herself to a spa day here and there, not to mention the newest pair of Jimmy Choos. REBELLIOUS SIDE (-): Tallulah has a wild soul, one that was tamed at an early age for the pageant circuit. But growing up in Texas Tallulah always had her horses and riding made her feel free. She’s a down home girl at heart who loves a good dive bar, and can shoot whiskey like the best of ‘em. And don’t even get her started at billiards.

HEADCANNONS;

The talent portion was always her favorite part of pageants because she got to let her wild soul show a bit more. Her talent was horseback riding. She now  keeps her horses at her Texas property. They are always the first she goes to see when she visits home. Marigold is her prized horse.

She did actually love James, and it kills her to think that she could love someone with demons like his. She can still picture the first day she met him, posted up against the record machine in some dive bar they wouldn’t have been in. Naturally, she blew him off at first, but he was persistent and she liked that about him.

Still toying with this one BUT I like to think Tallulah wasn’t directly involved in James’ death but it was orchestrated by someone close to her (a brother, her mother, father?? close friend etc.) because they knew she’d never leave him and she deserved better. something along those lines. Potential connection perhaps?

Though Tallulah grew to become eloquent and poised, her southern drawl always comes out when she is angry, upset, or is passionate about something.

She has a 12 year old daughter named Miranda. Tallulah is that mom who’s super involved in the school, junior league, etc. and would do anything for her baby. She calls Miranda her little lucky charm.

Mars Ravelo’s Darna: is it worth the wait?

The Filipino fantaserye series, Mars Ravelo’s Darna, starring Jane De Leon, has been running for two weeks now on various ABS-CBN services, which is enough time to justify an initial review. After roughly a decade stuck in development hell in various forms, the main question has to be: is the new Darna worth the wait..?

The show is based on the legendary komiks superheroine, Darna, created by writer Mars Ravelo and artist Nestor Redondo in May 1950. Darna was heavily inspired by Fawcett Comics’ Captain (Shazam) Marvel -- a young girl, Narda, finds a magic stone that transforms her into an adult superhero. She uses her new powers to fight against a range of supernatural foes, chief among them a power hungry medusa named Valentina.

This isn’t the first time Darna has been filmed. Since the 1950s there’s been a steady stream of movies, and three television series (well, two and a bit!) based on the character. The last was in 2009 on the GMA Network, after which the rights were sold to rival ABS-CBN who hoped to produce a new movie. But plans kept falling through, and when it looked like filming might actually begin with Jane De Leon in the title role, a worldwide pandemic struck! Thankfully ABS-CBN quickly retooled the project to become a television fantaserye, and filming finally began at the end of 2021.

Like other fantaserye shows, the series runs five nights a week (yes five!), Monday to Friday at 8pm. Fantaserye (or telefantasya) is similar to the South American telenovela genre -- like daytime soap opera except with a fixed episode count and a proper finale episode that ties up all plots. Shows typically run over many months, racking up dozens of episodes, sometimes well over one hundred.

Darma launched in mid-August, broadcast on cable channels in the Philippines and the USA, and accessible to worldwide audiences with English subtitles thanks to various streaming platforms. At the time of writing ten episodes have been broadcast over two weeks. What follows is an initial review of those episodes.

The premise

Narda Custodio (Jane De Leon) is a young woman with a passion for helping people, and a knack of finding herself in the middle of trouble. Narda is unaware that her mother, Leonor (Iza Calzado), hails from the planet Marte where she was once a legendary warrior named Darna who liberated Marte from invaders. Finding a quiet spot in the galaxy to settle down, Leonor has enjoyed a simple Filipino life, becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (paramedic) and mother to two children -- Narda and her brother Ding (Zaijian Jaranilla.) She still practices her martial arts skills every day, though, skills she insists her reluctant daughter must also learn.

As the show starts, some of Leonor/Darna’s old foes arrive on Earth and adopt human identities. They bring with them a weapon in the form of a giant robotic killing machine, forcing Leonor to once again use the alien stone that grants her the powers of Darna. Narda discovers her mother’s true identity, and realises the combat training has been to prepare her to become the next Darna. But Narda rejects her destiny, believing she is not a brave warrior like her mother. Instead she decides to follow her mother in a different way, as an EMT.

Unbeknown to all, the defeated robot’s power source has infected local people, mutating them in ways they can’t control. To make matters worse, there’s rampant corruption running throughout local politics and the police that may be linked to the hidden alien menace.

As events unfold, the reluctant Narda is increasingly forced to transform into Darna to save her town.

Narda is assisted by several friends, who remain unaware of her dual identity. Brian Robles (Joshua Garcia) is a young cop who fights against the corruption that he believes is the cause of his father’s murder. He quickly forms a bond with Narda that slowly blossoms into a romance. Regina Vanguardia (Janella Salvador) is a stylish young attorney from a rich and powerful family who wants to rid the town of all aliens -- including Darna. She has a crush on Officer Robles, and a jealous streak, making her a powerful ‘frenemy’ to Narda.

The tone

Mars Ravelo’s Darna mixes elements of telenovela melodrama, and superhero fantasy, and throws in a healthy dose of mystery for good measure. There are subplots and secrets galore. The seemingly kindhearted local Mayor is a ruthless tyrant. The town’s unassuming fast food stall owner has a home-made crime lab for investigating extraterrestrial activities. People are going missing, and the police are covering up the disappearances. The plots come thick and fast, and the pace is relentless.

This is important, because with five episodes a week to produce the lead superhero cannot appear in every episode. Fantaserye plays to a different beat to American tv fantasy, allowing the subplots and supporting characters to have a greater share of the screen time.

The show’s characters are a mixed bag of serious, comedic, and melodramatic. At one end of the scale are the two leads, Jane De Leon and Joshua Garcia, who deliver pretty straight dramatic performances. At the other end of the scale there’s the Greek Chorus of comic relief characters at the local cafe, who bicker and comment on every event.

Most characters fall into pretty well defined soap archetypes. There’s few shades of grey here -- the good guys are good, the bad guys are bad, and the audience can cheer or boo for whoever is on screen at any given moment.

The actors

As Narda, Jane De Leon proves particularly adept at handling the different demands of each storyline, be it action, romance, comedy, or tragedy. She works well with Joshua Garcia, sharing pretty good on-screen chemistry. Jane and Joshua’s performances are noticeably more natural and restrained than some of the other supporting characters. Janella Salvador, by contrast, gives viewers a true soap opera style performance as Regina, the rich and powerful daddy’s girl, playing the melodrama for all its worth and keeping the audience guessing as to if and when she’ll flip from Narda’s friend to her worst enemy.

There’s a massive cast of irregular characters who show up depending upon the demands of a given episode. Each of the main characters have their own subplots, and their own small cast of supporting characters. In many cases these supports are merely there to serve the needs of the main character, but some may provide bridges between the various parallel stories and Narda’s main plot.

The effects

Given that this is a superhero show, the obvious question is how special are the special effects? To paraphrase a line used to sell Christopher Reeve as Superman: “will we believe a woman can fly?”

On a Filipino tv budget, at five episodes a week, the effects -- unsurprisingly -- don’t quite live up to US tv standards. But that’s not to say that they are poor; far from it! Given the circumstances, it is actually quite incredible that the fights, stunts, and effects are as effective as they are.

Rather than scale back their ambitions, the team behind Darna have attempted some pretty exciting action sequences. Instead of aiming for perfect CGI like a US show might do, Darna just has fun with the tools at its disposal. It is as if the creators thought to themselves, “to hell with it, let’s just put as many thrills on screen as we can afford, and hope the audience is forgiving enough to excuse the few rough edges.”

Conclusion

Darna is like the bastard television love child of Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman and Joan Collins’ Dynasty! It smashes together classic old-school superhero hi-jinx with soap opera melodrama, and the results are a lot of fun.

The pacing may be a little odd if you’re used to mainstream American television, and the effects aren’t as polished as US tv, but the story lines have that essential soap quality of making you want to keep coming back for more. Jane De Leon offers up a warm and modest hero who is immediately relatable, and her supporting cast play their various sympathetic or villainous roles with such gusto that the show easily becomes a bit of a guilty pleasure.

Two weeks (ten episodes!) in, and already there’s enough intrigue and mystery to keep Scooby Doo and his chums occupied for years. Yet Narda has barely started on her hero’s journey to become the new Darna. Here’s hoping the series as a whole delivers on its promising start.

autumn marches on.  october contained two interesting events for my own worst enemy. first, at the cantab, we returned for a one night only show as the 'classic lineup' with john cahill on drums. we featured mostly the songs off no guarantees and it rocked!  second, we headed back to the beloved verdant studio in athens, vermont for first of many sessions, again with pete weiss at the helm. it's as good a time as any to start working on a new record, ain't it? here's a nice pic of verdant, where the magic happens...

can you believe we have been playing music together for 11 years?  2008 was capped off with an invitation to perform at the weisstronaut's 10th annual holiday bash at church, and it's fair to say that a very good time was had by all. mowe contributed one holiday original, "all i want for christmas (is a shot and a beer)" and took a stab at several rockin' holiday classics: john lennon's 'happy chrsitmas (war is over)', the pretenders '2000 miles', joni mitchell's 'river', the dogmatics 'christmastime' and last but not least, 'do they know it's christmas' by band-aid! extra-special thank yous go out to our guest vocalists (you know who you are...)  and in case you're wondering, my own worst enemy's christmas wish CAME TRUE: nbc network has officially cancelled that awful tv show that stole our band name.

Who loves Ahsoka?

I saw this post on reddit a while back of someone wondering if Ahsoka was popular with female fans in the Star Wars franchise. My answer to that, from my personal experience is yes! I have loved Ahsoka since I was 7 years old, when the Clone Wars movie first aired. I was apprehensive about her in the trailers as I knew Anakin never mentioned a Padawan in the movies so adding her later felt weird to me.

BUT, BUT, the biggest BUT you can imagine, I grew to love Ahsoka. By the end of the movie I was obsessed. I was enamored with her. She was my Luke Skywalker (I still adore Luke don't come for me). But Ahsoka's character is what brought the magic of Star Wars to me. It made me a life long fan. I loved her. I loved how she was cocky, witty and wasn't afraid to speak her mind. She wanted to be the hero and save the day! What kid didn't imagine themselves as the hero? Having super powers and fighting bad guys so good could prevail. She was that for me. She was my hero ever since then.

I talked about her in class, picked her name for make believe at recess, wrote short stories about her, told anyone who would listen about her. I went as Ahsoka for Halloween in 2008 or 2009 I can't recall, and though most people did'nt know who I was, I was happy to explain who Ahsoka was to each house. Im pretty sure I talked the ear off of every person passing out candy that year. I learned how to tell and keep track of time by when the episodes of Clone Wars would air and would tell people "oh that happened two episodes ago". My week would end on Friday when a new ep would air and my week would start on Sunday when my wait began for next episode (early seasons aired ep of Friday and later seasons aired on Saturday morning). Each night I would tell myself a different version of how I thought next week's episode would go based on the promos. I would almost cry if I thought Ahsoka was going to die in episodes. When Cargo of Doom aired my 8 year old self fell off the couch in shock and sadness because I thought Ahsoka was going to die. I know dramatic, but she was my favorite character and I was 7-8years old.I mean she still is my favorite character across all media. I kept waiting for another character to come along and replace her, I have always been in fandom since I was little so I assumed it was bound to happen. It never did though. I adore her.

So to answer that redditor, yes Ahsoka was loved by female fans. Ahsoka took me from being a casual fan to a life long fan. I look forward to wherever her story goes regardless, because even though I am 22 now, that 7 year old girl is still watching.
