Refusal to Change, Part Two
H4nk really did destroy himself, didn't he?
(This is part two of the end. To anyone first dropping in, please start with No Escape so you can catch up.)
(WARNING: Tough topics, depictions of passing out)
<- First (No Escape)
<- Previous (Refusal to Change, Part One)
Next (coming soon...) ->
He was getting out of here. But how?
H4nk sat up as he looked around his room. Everyone would see him if he went up his usual hatch. But how else would he be able to leave this room? Unless...
H4nk's eyes wandered over to the posters on his wall. Was that tunnel still there? He got up, slightly struggling to do so, and went over to the poster lowest to the ground. He peeled back the tape to show that, yes, it was still there. Turns out his teammates could never find it after his escape a few years back.
He lowered himself onto his hands and knees and began crawling into it. So far so good. He crawled deeper in. So far so-- Oh. His waist was caught in the tunnel entrance. Was it seriously too small for him? H4nk grumbled, then began crawling back before... Oh. Oh no. He was stuck.
"H4nk, you ready?" S4nf0rd yelled from the door.
Well, shit. This was embarrassing.
The door opened. "H4nk? Why aren't you-- uh... Huh. So that's where that was."
~~~
To say that D0c was pissed was an understatement. It was three hours of non-stop weightlifting and non-stop lecturing. H4nk could barely pay attention to anything D0c said. He felt like he was dying.
Finally, he was given another break, but not in his room. He had to sit in D0c's room so he could keep an eye on him. All H4nk did was gulp down his water in a futile attempt to feel full and glare at D0c, who was working while snacking on yet another hot dog. How come he gets to have dinner while H4nk got barely anything? The belch from D0c's mouth taunted him. In response, H4nk's stomach growled loudly.
Then he saw the rest of the hot dogs on the desk. Juicy. Meaty. Filling. That was all he could think about. D0c was about to reach for another when suddenly, H4nk got up. He snatched it out of his hand.
"H4NK, WHA--"
H4nk was about to take a bite, but then static filled his vision. He could feel the blood rushing out of his head. And next thing he knew, he was on his back on the floor, S4nf0rd holding his legs up.
"Hey, H4nk... You alright?" he asked.
"...Y-... Yeah..." H4nk said, too fatigued to answer in any other way.
"Well, D0c said you're done for today. I'll take you back to your room when you feel like gettin' up."
"But I'm hungry."
"I know. I'm sorry, but this is just how it is. You're too used to overeating, H4nk. And your muscles have gotten weaker from just layin' around all day. You need to get used to smaller meals again and build that muscle back up. I'll try to get D0c to give you a little more food and go a little lighter on workouts, but that's for him to decide..."
H4nk grumbled as he slowly sat up.
"Feelin' okay now?"
He nodded. S4nf0rd grabbed onto H4nk to help him up, spent a few seconds ensuring he was stable, and then walked with him towards his room.
"He WHAT?!"
Right after H4nk shut the door, S4nf0rd heard D31m0s shout from the kitchen. He rushed over, seeing D31m0s arguing with D0c, who had another chip bag.
"You can't just work him to death!" D31m0s said.
"D31m0s, this is all for his own sake. He needs to lose that weight."
"Not if he's passin' out! There's gotta be another way!"
"I kinda agree with D31m0s here, D0c," S4nf0rd began. "H4nk's exhausted. Can't ya ease up on him just a little?"
"You're forgetting who you're talking about. I know H4nk." D0c munched on his chips. "He could do this no problem before he decided to destroy himself. I just need to keep pushing him. He'll be back to his old self soon. He doesn't have a choice."
D0c opened the fridge and peeked inside.
"Now where did you put that bag of G1l's...?"
S4nf0rd and D31m0s just stared. Neither of them knew what to say.
~~~
It was past midnight. H4nk was in his room, once again laying on his mattress. His stomach rumbled again, hunger pains keeping him awake. He didn't hate D0c, but he was coming close to. Forcing him to exhaust himself, keeping food from him (even though he was the one eating the most), and drilling in the fact that he brought this upon himself, that he is the reason why he's become so pathetic.
It pissed him off, but all H4nk wanted to do now was get away. So he could keep eating whatever he wanted. So he could fill his starving belly up however much he wanted. So he could be with his cute little clown who wouldn't keep food from him, nor exhaust him, nor drill in why he's so pathetic. He missed Tr1cky so much. He'd do anything to get back to him.
H4nk sat up, then slowly stood. If he couldn't sneak out through that tunnel, the only other option was the door. He walked up to it and tried to open it, but it wouldn't budge. Of course D0c would lock him in. H4nk frustratedly punched the door and trudged back to bed. And he would've laid back down if he didn't hear clicking.
Wait, clicking? Coming from the door? Then there was a few knocks, followed by the slight creak of the hinges as the door opened.
"Psst. H4nk. You awake?" a voice whispered.
"...Yeah," H4nk whispered back.
It was D31m0s. Leaving the door slightly ajar, he entered, holding three bags of G1l's.
"Here. Eat this."
Didn't need to tell him twice. H4nk ravenously tore through each bag. Six double burgers, three large fries, and three milkshakes all vanished within minutes. H4nk stifled a belch and sighed. Damn, did it feel good to finally have something in his stomach again.
"You done yet?"
H4nk nodded.
"Good. Now c'mon. I'm gettin' you outta here."
H4nk got up as D31m0s grabbed his gear for him. They quietly made their way out of H4nk's room, down the hall, and to the front door. D31m0s entered his code to unlock it.
"There we go. Now you can go and do whatever you want."
H4nk hesitated. Was D31m0s really just... letting him go?
"Damn it, H4nk! C'mon! You know this is miles better than the hell D0c's been puttin' ya through! Hang out with the clown! Eat whatever the fuck you want! Just GO!"
And there he went. D31m0s watched as H4nk left. He sighed, bringing a hand to his head. He knew he would regret this, but hey, at least H4nk was no longer miserable. Once he could no longer see him, D31m0s reentered the building and locked the door before bumping into D0c and S4nf0rd. They were silent.
"What. the fuck. have you done?"

i was kind of sad viago didn’t have his cane from tevinter nights in veilguard. in tevinter nights he’s not particularly written as a combat specialist compared to other crows: he describes someone else as an “excellent swordsman, where viago preferred poison” when he’s specifically listing all the things they are that he bitterly compares himself against, and in the final confrontation teia defends him and does all the combat while he (admittedly badly injured at the time) sits down and delivers a whodunnit monologue. because that is the culmination of his skillset, not an action scene. he’s a strategist and poisoner whose mind is his weapon, and whether or not he can actually be the one to hold the knife is fairly irrelevant to his character as a whole or to how dangerous he is as a crow
while i don’t think it was the writer’s intention or in any way canon, it was iirc pretty easy to imagine this character as disabled and actually reliant on the cane he carries everywhere without it affecting anything the short story requires him to do, which is fun, and that was what i personally had in mind after reading it. i thought it would make particular sense for some crows to be disabled with what we hear of their gruelling training—i know that shit does not actually turn out healthy adults, people end up needing canes all the time even when they didn’t grow up scaling walls and doing weaponised backflips in-between torture rack sessions—and it’s an interesting angle for one to be a “success story” who became a talon. in that context, viago making his cane the most expensive and eye-catching thing on his person, as well as a tool for storing his infamous poisons, is an even more interesting character choice
anyway i’m guessing they removed the cane purely because it does a lot to make caterina’s more distinctive/iconic which is fair. but i think i’d experiment w leaning into this if i was writing fanfic? the cane was rlly cool okay it had two adder heads in what sounded like a callback to those great dao mage staffs. i wanted to see it. you should all put it into your viago art if you care about me
#full disclosure i havent read the story in months but this is what i remember thinking at the time#honestly i also just to lean into him not being a combat guy bc literally everyone in dragon age is a combat guy#some people need to do other things. for variety.#*just want

Mawdness Headcanons- Feelings About Stuffing, Vore, and WG
~~~
H4nk (any H4nk)- He likes being stuffed and loves being a pred. However, he's iffy when it comes to gaining. He mostly just likes being a little soft and nothing beyond that.
S4nf0rd- He'll only really be stuffed as an excuse to let D31m0s give him belly rubs. He's not that fond of vore and WG.
D31m0s- Like S4nf0rd, he'll only really be stuffed as an excuse to be close with him. Unlike S4nf0rd, he likes being a pred and doesn't mind being prey. As for gaining, he really doesn't mind being a little chunkier, as long as it doesn't hinder him.
D0c- On the surface, he's disgusted by all three. But he's had thoughts about being a pred before.
Tr1cky- He loves stuffing and being a pred. He also doesn't mind gaining and likes how soft and squishy he is.
H0fn4rr- He liked stuffing, but was worried about his gaining. He was absolutely terrified of vore.
J3bus- He's disgusted by all three, and sees vore as the worst of them all.
Sh3r1ff- He's not fond of stuffing, terrified of vore, but doesn't mind gaining.
Ph0b0s- He doesn't mind stuffing and thinks of vore the same way (because nobody would dare try to eat him). But when it comes to gaining, he'd rather not spoil his image.
4ud1t0r- They don't care about stuffing or gaining because their body doesn't work like that. When it comes to vore, they like it and do it regularly.
had a dream i designed a whole lil ttrpg while waiting in line at the grocery store (in hindsight im not sure why my family's grocery order was mostly bags of potatoes), and on waking up it's surprisingly cromulent
#ttrpgs#this is the third time ive designed a full game in my dream iirc#the first time was Maybe One Day It'll Be Enough#the second time i woke up and scrambled to write down the awesome game idea id just had#but all i got down was “PCs all use neopronouns”#i think your pronouns were mechanically significant in some way? like your combat build was in some way fundamentally reliant on pronouns#but ive got nothing#anyway and now there's this lmao#funniest thought i had in the dream was “fuck is it too soon to make Charcuterie V? i just put out IV”#dream!Rath your job isnt to worry about market forces your job is to make games and carry your mom's potatoes to the car
Linked Universe Combat Guide (part 1)
Lmao I have been casually sitting on this for like two months now and since I'm procrastinating writing an essay, I've decided to post it.
Anyway, this came from my bajillion notes about the Chain's equipment so I could have fight scenes that involved more than "he swings his sword" x9. I also wanted to identify all the weird weapons the Links would have too bc I know they exist. And since adhd is the shark disorder and I need to do something bc I stop moving I die, I've made my notes coherent enough to inflict upon tumblr.
General Notes:
In terms of additional weapons/equipment, I’m not including the traditional bombs/bow + arrows/boomerangs bc basically everyone has a variant of these. All I'm doing is looking at the possible items collected on the quests and being like "yeah I could probably work out a way to kill monsters with that".
Also they all have one-handed sword and shield proficiency, so I'm not including that for each Link. However any other canonical or possible weapon proficiencies will be listed.
7 out of 9 Links are predominantly lefties. Generally, left-handed swordfighters are used to fighting right-handed swordfighters, but the same is not true vice versa, so they will have an advantage against most human enemies. -> any ambidextrous fighters in the group is largely a headcanon but go nuts w/ it.
Researched to the best of my ability (limited only by search terms and my own waning hyperfixation), but pls be aware I literally only played my first Zelda game ever in February 2024 so there’s a lot I don’t know and games I haven’t played. Both parts are open to peer review and active fact checking lmao
Half of this is canonical abilities and half is presumed abilities based off of said canon + other logical conclusions. I'm doing this from a lore-accurate sense, rather than a straight pull from the LU comics, simply bc that allows for a broader analysis of what they're technically all capable of. I've tried my best to keep my personal headcanons out of this either way.
This part covers Four, Hyrule, Legend and Wind, whose games I have not played, so my apologies if anything is missing or incorrect.
Updated 9 March 2025 with new info provided by @thejolteonmastertj who's a literal godsend for their info about Legend and Hyrule's combat skills🙏, and @respheal who added on and emphasised just how important Legend's spin attack is. I love you both <3
Updated again 2 May 2025 with info for everyone here provided by @interlink-au.
Four
I am actively making the argument that Four probably has knowledge about other fighting styles due to his trade as a black/weaponsmith. I do not have any specifics in mind bc I do not have the spoons for that deep-dive, but feel free to run with this however you want.
Sword techniques: -> spin attack + variants -> great spin attack (repeated spins. interlink-au emphasises that it's very OP bc there's no dizziness/stamina involved so it can be spammed) -> hurricane spin (same as above but temporarily induces dizziness) -> dash attack (requires pegasus boots) -> peril beam (only works when he's got 1 heart left) -> sword beam when at full hearts -> roll attack -> down thrust (requires Roc’s cape)
Obviously, Four's greatest strength is team combat w/ the Colours. By splitting, he's able to coordinate combat with easy tag-team attacks with a much lower risk of friendly fire compared to when fighting alongside members of the Chain. Group combat, quite obviously, is actually kinda hard bc it requires an increased amount of situational awareness that is often overridden by adrenaline. Thankfully, since Four and the Colours are literally the same person, this is mitigated by a LOT.
Seriously do not discount how Four's height is an advantage in combat. Being smaller/shorter means you have less body mass to speed up and slow down, so you have greater agility and speed. You're also harder to hit and better at close combat (short limbs take less time to block, attack, etc.)
Genuinely don't know if he's proficient in combat while on horseback. I've heard at least one of Four's games has an Epona, but I don't know if there's any mounted combat.
Additional Weapons/Equipment: -> power bracelets -> gust jar -> Cane of Pacci -> magnetic glove -> fire rod -> magic hammer (hammer is capable of producing shockwaves and causing earth tremors) -> pegasus boots -> Roc’s cape -> shovel (do not under any circumstances discount mundane weapons) -> slingshot
Hyrule
To start off, the most important thing to know about Hyrule is that he's a self-taught fighter.
No, seriously this is more important than you think but not for the reasons you may think. Self-taught fighters are scrappy as shit. Out of the entire Chain, Hyrule will be the first one to resort to fighting dirty. Have him clawing at peoples eyes, throwing dirt, and biting. When you grow up in a situation where survival is a thin line you don't want to cross, you’ll do anything to stay alive when you have to.
Spells*: -> Shield: reduces damage by half -> Jump: self-explanatory -> Life: recovers health -> Fairy: shapeshifts into a fairy -> Fire: shoots fireballs from the end of his sword. (an aside, but this scene from the comic may be a variant of Fire? Fact check again lmao) -> Reflect: reflects magic attacks and strengthens his shield to temporarily block some physical attacks and most magical attacks -> Spell: can turn most enemies into Bots -> Thunder: summons lightning *be aware Hyrule has a magic meter. I haven't included how it functions here because it cluttered this section up horribly, but here's a link to it.
Hyrule actually gained the ability to use magic in his second quest, so while he's probably well adapted to using it now and may default to using it when backed into a corner, he's still a capable swordsman without it. -> Update: while the spells I listed above came about in Hyrule's second quest, thejolteonmastertj points out that Hyrule is straight up slinging sword beams with the random sword he gets given at the start of his first adventure, and that it's an important technique for the game.
He can canonically use Jump to perform a down thrust (like Four's) and a jump thrust (think Mario hitting bricks lmao),but there are so many ways to utilise this spell. Someone should teach Hyrule the Helm Splitter.
Additional Weapons/Equipment: -> power bracelets -> hammer -> this will sound stupid but ladder (again, never underestimate weird and mundane weapons.) -> magic rod (w/ accompanying fire upgrade) -> magic recorder (used in-game for fast travel but thejolteonmastertj also says it summons a tornado and if you can't find a way to use that in combat, I'm going to eat my hat)
Legend
Legend gave me so much trouble, solely bc sir has too many games. Jesus Christ man.
I am once again happily arguing that due to Legend’s sheer experience, he probably has other weapon proficiencies outside of a one-handed sword + shield combo, but that’s entirely up to personal headcanons. -> update provided by interlink-au: Legend is capable of dual-wielding his sword and a magic rod/cane, a boomerang, a hook-shot, etc etc. He will also parry with his sword if he's charging a spin attack (and can hurt them by walking into them, unless they're also holding a sword which will mitigate the blow).
Sword techniques (provided by interlink-au): -> spin attack (see above) -> dash attack (needs pegasus boots) -> sword beam -> hurricane spin (drains magic and induces dizziness) -> great spin (separate to a spin attack. increases range of normal attacks)
Once again for the class lmao, Legend has the most questing experience. While his section may seem small bc I don't want to rehash stuff I've already said, it's entirely on-brand for him to have tweaked a lot of this. Headcanons abound.
Updating the above points: again provided by thejolteonmastertj, Legend's officially getting smacked with another label, and this is "Most OP Spin Attack". This has been pointed out to be a core aspect of combat for ALTTP (Legend's first adventure). directly quoting their reblog bc I can't summarise it any better than it's already been said: -> "Legend’s charged spin attack as reactive crowd control is foundational & central to his entire battle style. It’s extremely difficult to land a hit otherwise! You gotta either run, button mash to parry with ur back against a wall till something hits… … or you play it smart, watch everything in the room & plan your charged spins accordingly. Legend would be particularly adept at being outnumbered in an enclosed space. He can also throw pots, even shrubbery if he so desires, but well-timed spin-attacks are what truly carries him through his first few dungeons."
respheal also points out that some of Legend's enemies can only be damaged by the spin attack, making it a cruical technique that he's more than likely put time into developing more than the others may have.
interlink-au adds on to both of the above and mentions that, with the roc feather/cape, Legend is able to do a jumping spin attack.
Sword techinques (provided by interlink-au): -> spin attack (see above) -> dash attack (needs pegasus boots) -> sword beam -> hurricane spin (drains magic and induces dizziness) -> great spin (separate to a spin attack. increases range of normal attacks)
Can't believe I didn't mention Legend's own tactical prowess smh
interlink-au also has informed me that two of Legend's rings let him punch, so congratulations, he now probably knows some brawling/boxing techniques. The Expert Ring can let him punch so hard, he does the same amount of damage as he can do with the Noble Sword.
Additional Weapons/Equipment (Warning: brace yourself): -> literally the entire contents of his ring box. I'm not listing them. I don't even know what's in it, nor do I want to at this point. A link to the Everything in his ring box can be found here -> power bracelets/power glove/titan’s mitt -> hammer(s) -> pegasus boots -> Cane of Byrna -> Cane of Somaria -> hookshots -> switch hook(quoting interlink-au: "swaps you for whatever you hit it with, objects and enemies, which you can use to cross gaps.") -> long hook (upgraded version of the switch hook) -> seed shooter (+ ember seeds, scent seeds, mystery seeds, gale seeds, & pegasus seeds) -> hyper slingshot (interlink-au says it can shoot 3 mysterious seeds at a time, which have different elemental effects). -> fire rod -> ice rod -> Rod of Seasons -> tornado rod -> sand rod -> Bombos medallion -> Ether Medallion -> Quake medallion -> magic powder -> shovel -> super net -> alternative tunics (attack or defensive enhancements) -> red shield (fire defence) -> Roc’s feather & cape -> mermaid suit (allows Legend to use items underwater) -> magnetic gloves -> super lantern (I've discovered this is as strong as Legend's second Master Sword upgrade in ALBW) -> magic cape (makes Legend invincible)
Breaking my own rules to list a few of Legend's 5 boomerangs, as they all have different abilities (info provided by interlink-au) 1. Magical boomerang -> can be controlled with his mind. 2. Magic boomerang (different object) -> further range 3. Nice boomerang -> sends out three boomerangs for the price of one
Wind
Arguably has the best balance and proprioception of the group, which is extremely useful in many situations.
Once again, do not be afraid to use Wind’s height to his advantage. He has a slight detriment bc he’s still getting taller and going through puberty does screw up your proprioception, but I think if you’re using a sword that much, both against enemies and in sparring matches, he's probably still got a decent sense of his own balance and body.
Updated info provided by interlink-au: Wind has a great spin/hurricane attack, which does induce dizziness and use magic.
I genuinely don’t know how the Phantom Sword works, sorry. I know it has some potential to slow time, but I’m not entirely sure about the mechanics behind that, nor if it’s still capable of such magic. From interlink-au: apparently the Phantom Sword currently doesn't work bc it doesn't have any magic leftover. There may be a comic out there made by Jojo that features Time and Wind talking about the sword, so if anyone knows of it, pls let me know.
Wind’s Parry Attack: Hmm this thing. It’s interesting. Note: no actual parrying with a shield is needed, which means it's kinda like BOTW's perfect dodge mechanic. -> Wind’s parry attack is like the Helm Splitter and Back Slice combined into one. If the attack is vertical, he does a Back Slice-esque attack. If the attack is horizontal, it’s a Helm Splitter. -> Additionally he has an ending blow like Twilight and Sky, which has a specific trigger.
Mild note from interlink-au: Wind can use three different items at the same time, unlike the others who generally use two, and he's very quick when he uses said items. Topically, I keep forgetting that Wind has magic which he uses to empower some of his arrows with fire or ice.
Additional Weapons/Equipment: -> power bracelets -> deku leaf (requires magic to be used) -> skull hammer -> grappling hook (!!!!! any rope dart combat video would make this brutal) -> shovel -> hookshot -> Wind’s weird magic armour spell -> Hyoi pears if you feel like world-building
Part 2: Sky, Time, Twi, Wars and Wild
#linked universe#writing tools#with the exception of Wind everyone here has a 2D game which does limit the animations you can mimic in writing#also? Wind Waker's combat??? ITS SO SMOOTH WTF????#i need to get that game or watch a full playthrough#lu four#lu hyrule#lu legend#lu wind#bc of the technological limits when Hyrule's games came out he's kinda hard to analyse properly sorry bud o7#I am DETERMINED to work out how to use Hyrule's ladder in a fight#it has literally haunted me for almost an entire year#one day#linked universe meta#Lu meta#combat meta#i'm not including mole mitts raised in interlink-au's reblog bc I don't think they'd be good in a fight#in the sense that you're more likely to break your fingers punching something with them#i dunno im agonising over this
Retconned Wardi firearms- a basic handgun, a highly decorative ceremonial handgun (belonging to Faiza), and a lance-gun.
Gun tech has officially been nerfed down to hand cannons (press F) (this has been a long time coming but I'd been fallacy of sunk costs-ing myself out of retconning).
Handguns are held similarly to a shotgun, with the butt pressed into the user's shoulder, one hand gripping under the barrel, and the other free to ignite the gunpowder. These represent the most advanced firearms in contemporary usage, both in make and in their use of uniform iron projectiles built to match the gun's bore for greater range and efficiency. Lance-guns are the more basal form, usually larger and mounted with the pole held over the shoulder, and are most effectively used by two people (one to hold and aim, one to light the gunpowder).
The spread of firearms is currently mostly limited to the Eastern Inner Seaway peoples (with some additional distribution via overland trade), and actual manufacture of hand cannons and gunpowder at Significant scale is limited to the region's core powers.
The reason for this limited spread is partially due to specific elements of the technology's history. Gunpowder was first synthesized by Burri alchemists and considered to be the discovery of the legendary divine weapon + solar fire of the deity Inanariya, and its formula (along with techniques for ideally refining its components) remained a closely guarded state secret. It was used predominantly in priestly contexts to generate flame and explosive sounds (in conjunction with earlier practices of generating multicolored flames with use of other chemicals), then integrated into combustible weaponry in the forms of fire lances, which would eventually develop into early handcannons.
The treatment of gunpowder as a guarded sacred or semi-sacred substance continued with Wardi adoption, where knowledge of its making is considered a closed rite. It's name (inya tsatsul or just tsatsul, a derived adoption of the Burri iñazatsūya) still reflects a divine solar association (the Burri word means 'sun's thunder', the Wardi 'inya' invokes the sun, 'tsatsul' is an adapted loanword and has no meaning independent of the substance itself), though its priestly use is now predominantly associated with the firearm'ed Odonii (rather than priests of the solar Face Inyamache). The composition of gunpowder can no longer be regarded as a Secret by any means, though efforts to obscure the methods of its creation are still moderately successful and has kept knowledge of gunpowder manufacture more limited than the total sphere of firearm usage itself.
The actual strongest limiting factor of firearm usage is the rarity of natural saltpeter deposits necessary for making gunpowder. The practice of actively producing saltpeter via nitraries has not been developed anywhere in the setting, and all is instead obtained via natural sources. These sources are rare and limited within the current spread of firearm technology, and result in gunpowder being a limited and expensive substance to produce. The weapons themselves are also very expensive to manufacture (a good quality steel SWORD is far too material-cost prohibitive for most people to own), particularly high quality firearms designed for use with standardized ammunition.
These guns are also very basal, and logistical difficulties in their use (weight, very slow loading and firing speed, high visibility, Relatively low reach and accuracy) along with the restrictive cost of production has kept firearms far from rendering conventional weaponry, armor, and projectiles obsolete (even within the societies that have access to them). They are still, however, very devastating in use within their contemporary context, particularly in that high quality guns have a longer range than the best arrow-based projectiles, and utterly negate most contemporary forms of armor at close range.
#I'd consider the setting to be like.....most closely analogous to like 3rd-1st century BCE earth (in terms of the average scale of#societies + Most of its technology (aside from major exceptions like this) + trade interconnectivity)#There are VERY few Very Big states capable of mass-manufacturing and resource extraction (like nothing the size of#the Roman empire has Ever existed in this setting. The biggest empires aren't even close. Cynozepal has a pretty massive territorial#span so is probably the closest thing but its actual control is highly fragmented along disconnected central hubs)#There's significant seaway trade connections but the Vast majority of transmission of goods is localized (even moreso over land)#So point being firearms have developed '''''earlier''''''' than in IRL history but the conditions that enabled very rapid spread are#not really present (though it's fairly inevitable that they'll become widespread over the next few centuries)#Also the likely trajectory of adaptation is going to be the development of Plate armor (which could absorb/block shots#from some types of firearms More advanced than these).#The types of armor used in this particular region is mostly lamellar/scale/padded fabric/leather and rarely involves#full body protection (using a shield to compensate) so developing thicker and fully protective armor would be the next logical#step in the arms race#I think it would be a fun constructed history for armor technology to outpace these simple firearms enough that they end up largely#abandoned in favor of re-specializing in close combat but I don't really care to plan out the far future that much
Secretive
What D0c does when no one’s looking.
(Warning: cookies)
<- Previous (Out of Control)
Next (Refusal to Change, Part One) ->
D0c sighed as he stared at the paper Chr1st0ff had given him. It was one of H4nk's wanted posters, but something about it was different from the others. Drastically different. He had to talk with H4nk about it, but unfortunately, he had snuck out again. Three days ago, in fact. Probably out still laying waste to his own health. D0c didn’t get it. What exactly is driving H4nk to become such a… fat slob? Does he know he's in horrible danger?
Another sigh from D0c as he put the poster aside. H4nk has to come back. He just has to. D0c munched on his chips, going over what he was going to say to H4nk in his head. He only stopped when his hand felt the bottom of the bag. Empty. With a huff, D0c crumpled up the bag and threw it away. He didn't know why, but he was having more cravings more often. But if he had to guess, it was possibly because he rarely ate proper meals. His stomach growled. He was still hungry. D0c shrugged, deciding to look through the kitchen and find another quick snack.
He just didn't expect what he saw. There were multiple plates of food on the table, including several burgers and hot dogs, chips, a few bottles of beer, and one plate of cookies in the center. Someone's bedsheet had been used as a tablecloth. The scene looked as if someone had tried to create a fancy dinner but could only make do with what they had. D0c frowned, rubbing his temple.
"Damn it, boys..." he said to himself, staring at the food. "Am I the only one with good habits around here?"
D0c then heard another small rumble from his stomach. The array of food was tempting him. He reached for one of the plates… before retracting his hand. As much as he wanted to grab a bite, he had to leave it alone. Whatever S4nf0rd and D31m0s were planning, unless they were going to binge again, D0c didn’t want to interfere with it.
Trying to ignore the temptation, he quickly made his way to the kitchen to grab another bag of chips. He opened the cabinet to find… nothing. S4nf0rd and D31m0s had grabbed the last of the chips. He checked for any other leftovers. Still nothing. Now frustrated, D0c went back over to the table to stare at the food once more.
Then he thought of something. He could take something small. Small enough so the two boys would never notice. His eyes gazed upon the plate of cookies. He knew he shouldn't indulge in sweets, but before he knew it, his hand had gotten ahold of one. He put it in his mouth and...
It was the best cookie he'd ever tasted. He savored the delectable chocolate and the slight burning sensation of mint— wait. Didn’t S4nf0rd and D31m0s say that they ate mint chocolate cookies before they… Oh no. He had already swallowed it.
D0c rushed to the nearest garbage bag. He poked two fingers down his throat, trying to trigger his gag reflex. But his vision was already starting to blur. So all he did was lean back, close his eyes, and hope that whatever happened next wouldn’t be the worst.
~~~
“Uh, D0c… Hello?”
S4nf0rd and D31m0s were crouched next to D0c, trying to wake him up. After waving his hand in front of his face, S4nf0rd looked at D31m0s with disapproval.
“D31, I told you this was a horrible idea.”
“Yeah, yeah, I know it seems horrible, but trust me. This’ll be hilarious!”
“You think this is hilarious?! When D0c finds out, he’ll be beyond seething!”
“You mean ‘if’ he finds out. Remember? We couldn’t—“
That was when D0c began to stir. He groaned, sitting upright, clutching his head.
“…You alright, D0c?” S4nf0rd asked.
“What… I feel… so weird… I…”
D0c slowly got up off the floor. He walked towards the table.
“I’m… so hungry…”
He then grabbed one of the burgers off the table. He took a huge bite out of it, only taking a few seconds to chew and swallow. He devoured the rest of it in just about a minute. Then he grabbed another. And another. Three burgers already in his stomach and he was still eating. S4nf0rd and D31m0s were bewildered by what they were witnessing. This was what went down at the Bakery?
D31m0s walked to the end of the table and grabbed the chair, dragging it to where D0c was standing.
“Hey, D0c… You wanna sit down?”
D0c faced him, still chewing. D31m0s continued.
“…’Cuz that’s a lotta food. Not that I’m judgin’ you or anything…”
D0c didn’t say anything. He sat down, focused on finishing his fifth burger. D31m0s backed away, not wanting to anger him. Then he noticed D0c’s stomach, which was rounding out from the great amount of food he was putting away. A small belch escaped from his mouth before he kept eating. The two boys could do nothing but watch the whole time.
Eventually, D0c couldn’t reach the other foods on the table. He tried getting up, but he had gotten too heavy. His head turned to stare at D31m0s and S4nf0rd.
“…Boys… Care to help me?”
“…Huh?” S4nf0rd replied.
“I need more. I need to be... urrrp... full. There's still so much left... I... I need all of it. D31m0s... give me that bottle."
"What... Oh. Uh, sure." D31m0s complied, giving the beer bottle to D0c.
They both watched as D0c chugged it down. They still couldn't believe what they were seeing. His stomach had expanded significantly, having already caused his button to pop and his shirt to ride up. And now, with the added beer, it was gurgling loudly.
"UUOOORP!" D0c had finished the bottle. "...Ugh... I'm so f--... I... still need..."
"D0c..." S4nf0rd began. "Maybe now's the time to stop..."
"No..." D0c leaned forward, trying to grab more food, though his bloated belly squished between the table and his legs was preventing him from doing so. "...I... I say... when I've... uuurp... had... enuuh--..."
It was right then that his body couldn't take it anymore. D0c's head and arm laid limp on the table. S4nf0rd tried to shake him awake.
"D0c? D0C?!"
He laid him back into the chair, hurriedly trying to check his pulse. S4nf0rd sighed in relief. Still alive. He then glared at D31m0s.
"How could you let this happen?!"
"Uh... I didn't think he'd go this far..."
"You went too far this time, D31. He could've died."
"But he didn't! You could've stopped him!"
S4nf0rd sighed. "...You're right, D31. Absolutely right. And I wish either of us had.”
“…Yeah…” D31m0s responded, feeling guilty.
“Yeah, we’re never gonna hear the end of it once he wakes up.”
“But then again, he might have no idea. Remember how it was with us? He won’t remember any of this.”
“Let’s… just get him to bed. We can’t leave him here.”
“Right.”
With that, the two of them hoisted D0c onto their shoulders by his arms, slowly carrying him down the hall.
“What are you doing with D0c?”
They both jumped. H4nk had just returned. Turning to face him, they saw how much bigger he had gotten, so much so that he was a few feet from filling the width of the hall. Somehow, they were not surprised.
“We were… uh… just…” S4nf0rd stammered.
“You guys done with the table yet?”
“Lemme guess. You want the food?” D31m0s said. “Yeah, you can have it. We’re done with it.”
"Cool."
As H4nk turned back to feast on their leftovers, S4nf0rd and D31m0s brought D0c to his room. They laid him down onto his bed and pulled his blanket over him.
"Oof," D31m0s said. "Bet he's gonna be hurting later."
That's when S4nf0rd noticed something laying on the desk.
"Uh, D31m0s, look at this."
D31m0s walked over to see what S4nf0rd had found. It was H4nk's new wanted poster. They both read it over silently.
"Damn, this is what D0c wanted to talk to H4nk about?"
"You shouldn'tve let him have those leftovers, D31."
"We gotta stop him."
"Yeah, but keep it passive. I don't want things to escalate."
S4nf0rd and D31m0s then walked into where the dining room was.
"Hey, H4nk, buddy..." D31m0s began. "Maybe you shouldn't--"
There was nothing but scraps on the table. Looking over at the couch, they saw H4nk laid out, napping. S4nf0rd and D31m0s looked at each other, knowing they had messed up.
