Avengers (1963) - Vol 116 - Loki Comic Read Through

Classic Loki Masterpost:    Rating: Great

Plot: Dormammu and Loki scheme to collect the powerful six parts of the Evil Eye to control the world.

Favorite Moments:

The Avengers were trying to look for the Black Knight and want to get into Strange’s Mansion because they believe that the Black Knight is in there. They try to get into the Mansion but Strange has a force field around the structure. Nothing the Avengers do seems to even dent the field. Thor knocks on the doors. Wong answers and Thor aggressively asks to see Strange.

And Wong tells him to Eff off.

This upsets Thor.

So Thor decides to Bash down the Door.

Mantis throws Wong at the Wall. With this, the rest of the Avengers rush into the Castle. They confirm that the Black Knight is a stone statue in this Mansion. With this knowledge, they believe that the Defenders plot to steal the Black Knight’s castle.

However, before they can collect the Black Knight, Strange throws them out of the castle with a Whirlwind.

So Thor yells at Strange from outside the walls. (It’s so funny seeing Thor act like an arrogant d**k sometimes. Justifiable in this cause, but yelling at a building isn’t going to do Thor any good.)

Back on the Asteroid, Dormammu is gloating about how everything is going according to his plan. Loki, while happy for Dormammu, is really anxious about getting his sight back.

Dormammu dismisses him by telling him he’ll do it later. Loki is starting to realize maybe this team up wasn’t such a great plan.

Back IN the Mansion, the Five Defenders ... plus Hawkeye (LOL) are trying to figure out how to get the Evil Eye.

“Whatever that disturbance may have been...” What an d**k way of referring to the Avengers.

Using the Orb of Agamotto, Strange explains the Backstory of the Evil Eye. (Flash-back to another Comic, come on) Johnny Storm woke up this Old Wizard, Stole the Evil Eye and Johnny’s friend shot the Evil Eye out of Johnny’s hand before it exploded into six pieces which scattered themselves all over the globe. There are Six Defenders and Six pieces so the Defenders plan about how to get each piece.

Back on the Asteroid, Loki finally figures out that maybe Helping Dormammu out isn’t a good plan. If Dormammu actually does get this power, not only would he conquer the Earth, but he’d also be able to conquer Asgard.

Loki hates Asgard. However, Only Loki should be even allowed to conquer Asgard so Loki decides he needs to stop Dormammu’s plan. Because Loki has been banished from Asgard the only person that Loki can ask for help is ..... Thor.

Loki uses a Projection to contact Thor, but ends up in Front of Cap because he can’t see. Loki demands someone (Cap, but Loki can’t see him so doesn’t know who he is) take him to Thor so Loki can warn Thor. Because of their last interaction, Thor is unhappy to see Loki but Vision encourages Thor to hear him out because Loki is blind. 

Loki was about to Admit the Truth, but then he’d had to admit that he screwed up so he doesn’t (LOL). Instead, he convinces that Avengers that the Defenders are all Evil and MUST BE STOPPED. If they collect the Evil Eye, it could be the end of the world. I mean, it’s half right so close enough I guess. The Avengers then plan to go to the six locations and fight against the Defenders.

I haven’t read all the comics leading up to these issues, but apparently the Avengers and Defenders haven’t had the best interactions up to this point. Hawkeye and Hulk are both villains/ anti-hero types at this point and cause a lot of collateral damage. Apparently the other members of the Defenders have had some tense interactions with the Avengers as well. I guess there is enough bad-blood between the two groups that NO ONE CAN TALK TO EACH OTHER FOR 5 SECONDS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT’S GOING ON, OR TO SEE IF LOKI IS TELLING THE TRUTH. I mean, like they could just try talking with each other, it would save a lot of time and damage.

First up is The Silver Surfer vs Vision.

Silver Surfer is a the general location of the first Evil Eye but can’t seem to find it.

After talking to the locals, he realizes he didn’t check the volcano. (Every time some realizes they screwed up in this comic they always get these racoon eye and I always think it’s funny).

Wanda and Vision and driving to the locations of the Evil Eyes and they discuss that maybe Loki’s Story. Vision suggests that instead of fighting they actually talk with each other and plans to do just that. Finally, a voice of reason in this group.

The Silver Surfer tries to look for the Evil Eye in the Valcano but the Lava is just getting in the way. So, the Surfer tries to blast the lava away, which causes the Valcano to erupt.

Good job Silver Surfer.

The eruption destroys the Jet Wanda was on. The damage to the Jet severely hurts Wanda, rendering her unconscious. Vision, naturally, freaks out.

However, instead of TALKING about it, Vision actually does save her. Good job Vision, here’s a cookie.

However, Vision says Eff the peaceful opinion because it nearly got Wanda killed.

So Vision starts to attack the Silver Surfer.

The Locals decide to Place Wanda in front of the Lava Flow to “appease the Silver God” (don’t ask)

While fighting, VIsion and the Silver Surfer find the Evil Eye. The Silver Surfer doesn’t understand why Vision doesn’t want to help (maybe talk to each other, oh wait). The Evil Eye is exploded out of the volcano. Both the Silver Surfer and VIsion rush to get it, but Vision spots Wanda and goes to save her instead of the eye (what a good boyfriend).

Thoughts on Comic:

I love this comic, especially the fact that nearly everyone is screwing up on one level or another (Except for maybe Dormammu).  The Defenders screw up first by not explaining the situation to the Avengers and not letting in the Avengers in when they showed up. I get that they were busy, but they could have stopped for 5 seconds to have a quick talk. Loki screws up because it was clear that Dormammu doesn’t actually like Loki (who doesn’t want to listen to Loki’s melodramatic speech, the nerve) and only used Loki for his powers. Then Loki doesn’t want to admit such a screw up and then Lies to cover it up. (Great Evil Character decision.) And then the Avengers screw up by not fact checking anything Loki told them.

This set up is so great. They wanted to do a Team vs Team fight and all the character interactions just make sense. This set up also allows each hero to have a specialized scene where they have a 1 on 1 match up. As seen with the Vision v Silver Surfer fight, this allows each character’s powers and personality to really come out.

I also love Loki’s characterization in this issue. It doesn’t delve into his personal history or talk about Loki’s nature or anything deep like that, but it also make him a little more interesting than a 2D villain. In this issue, he’s technically an Evil Anti-hero because he is helping the hero prevent another villain’s evil plan. Mainly because it would hurt his later Evil plans, but it’s still fun.

I wish more comics were written as well as these issues.

Every Episode of WTNV with Carlos Mentioned

No, I did not keep track of how long I spent on this. Anyway.

Total series count: 89 episodes

In the main podcast, anyway. The list includes at least partial context; however I wasn't counting the number of times Carlos was mentioned per episode, just if he was mentioned at all. So if he came up more than once I didn't necessarily record each time. Still, there are definitely spoilers.

I can't like… guarantee that I didn't miss something, unfortunately. However, I used both "Carlos" and "scientist" all the time, and I additionally used "boyfriend" from 26 onward and "husband" after 100. So it should be pretty close, at least. 

I might go through and do live shows later. However, the answer for them is (almost) always yes, as most of them at least have a segment that Dylan Marron performs at some shows, so it'd be more a matter of checking for mentions of Carlos outside of that.

The reason I did this was to see if I was at all correct in my sense that Carlos has been mentioned less over time. My conclusion: well… sort of?

There actually was less of him than I thought in both year 1 and year 2 (year 1 in particular). However, years 3 and 4 had a LOT of him, and it has gone down from there through the end of year 7, when Carlos was only mentioned in 7 episodes total, with very few casual mentions by Cecil (vs when he had a particular role in what was going on). 

So the problem (or at least, I consider it one) hasn't been going on for as long as I thought in the grand scheme of the series. I now believe that a significant part of the issue is just… Well, it has at this point been almost three years since that decline. Plus listening live makes everything feel drawn out, so there's a lot of perceived time in between individual mentions. 

That being said, I think the actual conclusion is: it's maybe not as I thought, but I also wasn't completely imagining it, especially not looking at very recent events. We don't know what this year will hold, but year 7, as mentioned above, had the least of Carlos in it so far. There are also some significant gaps - Cecil mentions Carlos in episode 91, and after that the next time he comes up in year 5 is in 100 (!!!!)

He is mentioned in a solid majority of the series, but it's pretty front-loaded at this point. Also he has a few appearances in the first novel, and he's a central character in It Devours!

Excellent Chapter although it did favor the action over plot continuation. I really just want information rather than awesome action. I'll just have to do my waiting but the action is very enjoyable.

Finally a great action chapter which does a good job showcasing Erens new abilities.

With 30% of the vote, the moment when Eren reacts to Reiner’s attempt to eat him takes the top place for favorite moment. Following up with half as many votes is Zeke’s arrival as he displays his big brother complex. In third came Eren’s defensive use of the Warhammer Titan’s power.

The most memorable moment was definitely Eren's scream of sheer determination and will to live as he was ripping Reiner's jaw apart, in a complete rejection of the self-loathing and fatalistic mindset his old nemesis was seemingly trying to push onto him.

Reiner vs Eren was very repetitive and shonen typical and just there to show how 'badass' Eren had become. Besides, the Marleyans are getting too much screentime at this point. The only cool thing was Zeke's entrance.

I thought it was neat that it was confirmed that the Shifters' Titans have brains that control the Titan, rather than the Shifter controlling it themselves. I still want to know more about the Titan Chemistry Research Department, and all of the in-universe info about how Shifters interface with their Titans.

When Pieck took Gabi in her mouth? 👌👏 And that cannon?? 😍😍😍😍 And when she finished putting on the cannon and stood up in all her majesty I just straight up died. I also loved seeing Eren use the War Hammer to make back spikes, that was so neat.

I think it's both that it's pointless to run and he wants to protect those in the building. For the former, he knows Marley will just keep on persisting and will do everything they can to find him, so escaping is pointless. As for the latter, he cares about his close friends that are still inside and thus doesn't want them to get hurt, so for their safety, he wants to be the one to take on Marley by himself.

I think this chapter proved that Yelena wasn't the one who "manipulated" Eren like some people claimed first, because he refused her order and choose to fight instead of "run away" or "trusting her plan".

I would say Zeke titanizing everyone who drank the wine is inevitable, but the fact that Falco ingested the wine keeps being brought up. Zeke isn't aware. I feel like he has to know about Falco's state before any decisions are made. Whether that helps or not, we'll find out. After all, Zeke was shown to be close to Colt, who's Falco's big bro. Big brother feelings resonate with Zeke. It's a 50/50 chance imo.

It been a while since Isayama didn't shine with his drawing specially. The facial expressions and symbolism between some panels are so powerfull meaning and puts us in struggle to decoding it for a bit. One of the most deepest one (for me) was yelena saying "you're different from others Eren, you're special".

I do not foresee a great future for Eren as facial surgeon.

Marley and the warriors is so hypocritical. Porco's line really go to me because they attacked Paradis multiple times first. Hope  eren beats their ass.

I think it was a well written battle in the sense that there was still a good amount of tension because Eren wasn't just effortlessly slaughtering the warriors. Instead he defiantly held his ground while outnumbered, outgunned and surrounded which imo showcases his strengths - tenacity and willpower - best of all.

I want all 9 titans to come together in an epic all-out brawl! Please make it happen Isayama!

When I finished the chapter I started crying because of what Reiner said while he was trying to eat Eren. In my opinion, Reiner has been such an accurate depiction of suicidal ideation that it's scary. It's just really painful to see, but I'm glad it's done so well and I really commemorate Isayama for treating it respectfully. I suppose I hope Reiner gets to see the kids again before he dies. At least... give him one last smile before he has to say goodbye.

I am most looking forward to see if Mikasa joins the fight or not, we still don't know what she thinks about Eren now!! And I want to know what Armin figured out, and I really want to know where the FUCK Historia is, and I really really want to know what happened to Levi and Hange. In that order.

Very good and well rounded, comedic moments were funny and not forced, Fights looked great as expected. Unique twist seeing new anti titan weaponry but enjoyable to see it being used.

2. Are you outgoing or shy? Definitely outgoing. Of course I need time alone in my room to do fandom stuff, but most of the time, I am extrovert, opened, and really outgoing.

10. Who was the last person you had a deep conversation with? The last deep conversation I had was 2 days ago with my friend who I consider my blood related sister. We are not blood related, but my and her family knows each other since 30 years, we grew up together. She is 22 and always looks after me, like I’m her little sister for real. She is more experienced in life in general so it’s always good to talk with her. We couldn’t shut up until 5 am.

14. Do you believe in luck and miracles? I do believe that what you give to others will cast your future, I mean if you treat everyone kindly, you will get it back through your life. I am not into superstitions or miracles, however I like to wish when I see a shooting star.

17. Do you think there is life on other planets? Considering the fact that the universe we know is infinite, yes. I believe it all. Statistically it would be impossible that we are the only one out there. They can be far, they can be unintelligent, but I think they still exist. But who knows, maybe they are more intelligent than us. 

21. What are your bad habits? I like to procastinate (not that much) or forget everything (is it a bad habbit?) I used to bite my nails but I don’t do it anymore, also I have to give up smoking on special occasions. (Do not get into it okay?)

26. What do you do when you wake up? First things first, I go and have a glass of water, go to the toilet, then sit down to have my cup of coffee (COFFEEE!!!!!) for that day. These three are always in my routine, I always start my day like this.
