hellooo very cool person I am just now getting into the atla fandom and I know Nothing other than your fics are very cool and great and I was wondering if you have any recs (or links to posts with recs!!) bc I trust your judgment LOL
I hope this is ok to ask!! also I will add that I am not that picky but I will add that I am very much a longfic enjoyer soš«¶š«¶
My friend, may I open up to you the broad world of clicking an AO3 user's bookmarks. <3
AKA: literally click any ao3 username, "bookmarks" should appear towards the top of the resulting page. You can then voyage into the additionally wonderful waters of filtering by length, "recommended", fandom, etc.
Also: if the fic you like is in collections, try checking them out, especially if the title appeals to you. Can be a great way to find essentially a fic playlist.
Anyway all hail ao3's designers they done good work
#Oh for an internet designed purely by people for people#Not by people who want money for people who are about to have less money#AO3 you are a light onto my days#In other but thematically related news I'm researching the switch to Linux#Because new laptop came with Windows 11 and if I need to learn command line edits to get this functional#(read: not actively hostile)#I might as well finally make the switch to the computer system not designed to maximize my suffering#Reading their list of recommended programs was hilarious because I literally use all of them instead of the Windows ones already#Go go free and open programs go#ao3

as someone who loves Excel...
An F1 team should have dedicated software for this. At the very least they need an actual database for monitoring parts.
No company, big or small, should use Excel this way. It's meant for accounting finances calculations, not looking up part numbers on race weekends!

So uh it turns out that the outdated system to track their car parts that Vowles was talking about last year was actually Microsoft Excel. Williams had been using Excel to list and track 20,000 parts of a Formula One car every year.
#f1#stop using excel as a database#it's not designed for that#yes you can force it to function this way#but you should really switch to Microsoft Access or SQL for heavy duty databases

In yet another move I don't have the time to be properly upset about because I've now got more to do immediately if not sooner, Twitch is cutting off their video storage capabilities above 100 hrs (including no warning not letting me save new highlights while I'm over that limit so I have to download all expiring vods to my lacking disc space while I organize before they delete everything in under two months).
But this means in the process of exporting all my vods to youtube I'm remembering those projects and the different titles I had for every stream--and I'm afraid to say it but I 100% peaked with an unfinished project in spring 2022 and solid gold puns including "Yeti or not, here I come" and "I must Sasquatch you're doing here."
#will i reuse those puns for something? probably#would probably make some cute t-shirt/desktop wallpaper illustrations kinda designs#might remake those characters for a better short than the challenge they were made too quickly and messily for too#ramblings#puns#at least so far the direct export to youtube is working okay for me#just having to pause download and reupload everything that was initially a glitched vod that had to be edited and uploaded from my pc#and as they finish processing at different rates i'll need to go through and save screenshots to get my eventual playlists chronological#and i'm trying not to push it so just having five or six processing at a time#currently on the 45th of 499 videos (some of which are recent vods that'll expire only like two that are already highlighted)#also annoying is the fact i'm going through in chrono order meaning when the video producer page reloads#(something that happens between every one to three 'export' clicks)#i have to reselect ascending before clicking forward two pages as of now to get back to where i am#once i've saved my screenshots and confirm the uploads to youtube seem functional i can at least delete them#so i don't have to keep clicking more pages in#but bleugh to this decision honestly not a fan of the chat functions on youtube#but if they're gonna make me split my streaming presence to youtube anyway the call is getting stronger to just switch#i love the friends and communities i've gotten hooked into on twitch though and again yt is not made for streaming#tag you're writ

why on earth do you even want a fe4 remake if you dont want anything to change just go play the original game.
#i want the story to be more fleshed out#someone on this subreddit thread im. vaguing lol mentioned that the castles functioning somewhat like the my castle system in fef would be#fun and i reallyyyyy agree or like a camp set up?#the long maps i want preserved bc . thats one of this games defining features#the secret spots id like to have some indication of there being Something There#not necessarily the sparkles lol but like#something like a random statue. a landmark that makes u go i wonder if theres a secret there and there is#i think fe4s mechanics could use a SERIOUS REVAMP and other ppl have mentioned the castle guarding mechanic is#interesting and fun but tehres only a few maps that really incentivize you to guard them#which is like. whats the point of using the slow armored units at all when the maps are too big to utilize them#and theyre only useful in a few battles#but also the take + defend format is really fun for a strategic rpg so i think they should use that more!!! make it interesting!#i could take or leave a personal avatar. i dont really get the hate for them they dont. add or subtract much to a story and i think the hat#for new mystery specifically is a) poor analysis of why it as a remake did not do well#esp in the light of shadows#and b) literally not even that big of a deal . genuinely.#ALSO WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU WANT THE HOLY BLOOD TAKEN OUT OF THE GAME ITS A MAJOR PLOT POINT#ARE YOU AN IDIOT. I THINK MAYBE YOU JUST DONT LIKE THE GAME.#ppl also were talkign a lot abt 'redeeming' 'villians' which is like. i think some other major plot points may have flown over your head#... tbh the thing id hate is if visually it looked like the most recent games#the move to the switch has made for some of the most unattractive map and environment design ever esp coming off the tail of fates and shad#ws. fates is not a good game overall but its environment design is BEAUTIFUL and makes for very fun maps and shadows achieved the explorati#n mechanics three houses wanted to use so badly but sucked ass at#if they dont bring back pixelized icons im gonna be . not surprised but really bitter abt it#overall i just want the gameplay to be a bit more accessable and the story revamped (like how shadows expanded on gaidens story)#and anything else on top of that is extra experimentation which could be interesting or lame#i dont have strong opinions on that bc the thing i DONT want is for it to be the exact same#bc that defeats the purpose of a remake.#literally why do igo on reddit ever/#visually if it took a queue from octopath traveller i would be ecstatic

šššš¤š¬ššØš«š² š¬šš®šš | š¬.š«šš¢š
š¬š®š¦š¦šš«š²: spencer needs your help examining a crucial piece of evidence...but the moment he sees you, his mind goes blah blah blah...proper name, place name, backstory stuff...
ššØš§ššš§šš¬/šš°: spencer reid x diva!chemist! female reader, same reader as in pick your poison but you donāt need to read that firstāthere arenāt any major references, suggestion that the reader engages in casual hook ups, reader has a belly button piercing and a described outfit, spencer's pov only
š°šØš«šš¬: 2k
š/š§: requested by @trulymadlydarling it was slowly gathering dust in my inbox š sorry!
"I think the threshold of my lab isn't exactly the best place for camping."
A woman's silhouette cast a shadow over Spencer as she appeared right above him in the dimly lit hallway.
Spencer sighed in frustration and hauled himself to his feet. As he brushed off his pants, he kept his eyes off the woman in front of him.
"Well, I didn't think you'd make me wait fifty-eightā"
"Oh, just say the hour. Is rounding numbers really that hard for you?" she scoffed, her voice carrying a trace of genuine curiosity. She swiped her access card, unlocking the door to the lab. With her back turned to him, he took in her appearanceāan oversized fur coat draped over her shoulders, a designer handbag hanging from one arm. His gaze drifted downward, and to his surprise, he noticedā¦pajama pants and slippers?
"You should be grateful I even bothered to show up at this hour," she added.
"This is really important," Spencer replied as she led him inside.
She moved through the space with effortless familiarity, heading straight for the light switch. Well, this was her domain, after allāthe place where she spent most of her days.
"I don't care," she replied. "Unless you've found proof that Marilyn Monroe was the Zodiac Killer all alongāthen, well, I care a little. Honestly, you have no idea how much you owe me for showing up..."
He rolled his eyes.
"Should I be thanking you on my knees, or...?"
"I could have been busy. I could have been out with the girls at a club. I could have been having the night of my life..."
"I get it, you made a huge sacrifice answering my request, but can you nowā"
"I could have been in bed already. My own. Or not my own," she glanced at him over her shoulder. "Though in that case, I wouldnāt have picked up."
Spencer simply sighed. By now, he was used to itāthe way most of their conversations followed the same pattern. How she always set the pace, steering the direction as she pleased. How she sometimes deliberately ignored his words and didnāt care if it made her seem rude. How, in general, she didnāt care what impression she left on others.
He had witnessed it countless times, found it irritating every single time, and yetāevery single timeāhe kept the conversation going. Funny.
She switched on only one of the lights, leaving the room bathed in a soft twilight. Her handbag landed on the long counter beside one of the microscopes, and she tossed her fur coat next to it, completely unconcerned about knocking something over.
Sometimes, he watched her with quiet fascinationāthe effortless confidence in her movementsāand wondered if she had ever, even once, smacked her hip against a doorframe. Or stubbed her toe on a cabinet. Those small, mundane humiliations and everyday mishaps simply didnāt seem to fit with who she was.
He tightened his grip on the plastic bag he had brought with him, the one containing something that needed to be examined. The team didnāt know about it yet.
The thought, the theory, had quite literally yanked him out of sleep. He couldnāt function without checking this lead immediately. But he knew that if he went through the lab, heād have to wait until morning for the resultsā¦so he decided to ask for a friendly favor.
Okay friendly was a big word.
They had known each other for a few months, worked together on several cases, gone on a date, slept together.
Not necessarily in that order.
He was just about to open his mouth, say something, hand her the bag⦠when, for the first time, he actually saw her in better light than the dim glowāor rather, lack of itāin the hallway. Against his own will, his gaze started its journey over her.
From the slippers on her feet, up the loose pajama pants that ended just below the piercing in her navel, the black camisole with thin straps, to her faceācompletely free of makeup.
Until now, he had only seen her in two versions. One was her usual, elegant work attire. The other was her evening lookāform-fitting, designed to turn heads and keep them there.
On second thought, there was also a third version. Without clothes.
But he had never seen her like this. Casual, comfortable, dressed for nothing more than wandering the walls of her own apartment.
She lifted her arms to tie her hair into a ponytail, and her shirt rode up slightly.
āIf my piercing fascinates you that much, I can give you my piercerās number,ā she offered dryly, a fleeting smirk on her lips as she caught his stare. He immediately snapped his gaze back to her face, cursing internally when he realized he probably looked like he had been caught staring. Which, of course, he hadnāt been. āExcellent work. Full professionalism. Experienced handsā¦ā
"I need you to check this stain," he interrupted, raising the bag.
They had been talking too much, and he really needed to know if his suspicions were correct.
She stepped closer to take the bag from him.
āIs this a crucial piece of evidence, or can I touch it?ā
āYou can touch itā¦ā
She stopped just a step away, shifting her weight onto one hip and tilting her head to get a better look.Spencer instinctively straightened, feeling a strange tension along his spine.Earlier, he had been looking at what she was wearing. Now, what caught his attention was how she looked.
Thereās a certain kind of beauty you never quite get used to, no matter how often you see it. The kind that, every time, knocks the air from your lungs for just a secondāthat fleeting disbelief that someone like this actually walks the earth.
She had it. She radiated it.
And she was just a step away.
She took the garment out of the bag. It was a red turtleneck sweater. She lifted it higher toward the light, furrowing her brow as she examined the stain.
Spencerās gaze fell on her beautiful face, her eyes shimmering slightly, her lower lip slightly pursed in thought.
Suddenly, she scoffed, snapping him back to reality.
"Mystery solved, and I didnāt even need a microscope," she said, shoving the sweater back into his hands. As he took it, his fingers brushed against hers, catching him slightly off guard. "Itās foundation. Iād recognize that stain anywhere. So, hooray, happy to help, no need to put me in the case report, have a good night, and see youā"
He grabbed her wrist before she could step away, stopping her in place.
"This isnāt a joke," he said, his voice dropping, tinged with sudden irritation. She raised an eyebrow at both his tone and the way heāunintentionallyāclosed the distance between them. As usual, she looked him straight in the eyes, and as usual, it was hard not to be drawn in. But he tried, because this case was really consuming his thoughts. "Listen, I called you because I need someone to actually test it. Not just glance at it. It'll only take a moment, and then you can go back to crawling into bed with whoever you want. Can you do that?"
The second-to-last sentence made her expression shift slightly.
For a moment, they stood there, unwavering, eyes locked without so much as a blink. Then, the corners of her lips tugged upwardājust barely. But it felt more like a forced gesture, an attempt to maintain her carefully practiced expression, rather than a sign of genuine amusement.
"Alright," she replied softly. Not to be mistaken for shyly. There was nothing shy about her, a fact he was reminded of constantly.
"Iāll test it, since it matters so much to you. And then Iām going back to bed." A slow blink before she yanked the sweater from his hands. "With whoever I want."
Why did swallowing suddenly stop being an automatic reflex and turn into something he had to consciously work through?
"Thatās great," he said shortly, dryly. He could feel himself slipping into the trap again, letting her toy with him. "Have fun."
"I will."
With that simple assurance, she walked away, and the very particles of air around him seemed to loosen, finally allowing him to breathe again. He turned after her instinctively, the way a swivel chair spins when someone sets it in motion.
She crossed the lab table and leaned over an empty workstationāempty, like all the others. The entire width of the counter separated them now, along with the return of cool detachment to her face. Slowly, Spencer rested his hands on the smooth surface, watching as she got to work. Watching as her hair bounced slightly with the shift in position. Watching as her jaw tensed in concentration. Watching as she leaned over the workstation slightly.
"So," she began flatly, not pausing her work or even looking at him.
Spencer gave his head a small shake, realizing that this time, he really had been staring. At least she hadnāt seen it.
"What exactly am I testing?"
His gaze drifted to her again.
"Something related to the case."
"Wow, I never would've guessed."
He was too distracted to mentally slap himself for how pathetic he was.Ā
"Uh, itās not exactly groundbreaking," he began.
He could focusāhe just had to try hard enough. He just had to clear the lingering trace of her scent from when sheād stood so close. Had to shake off the echo of her words. With whoever I want, she had said. The more he thought about it, the more accurate it seemed. He firmly believed she could have whoever she wanted. With that confidence. With that face. With that bodyā¦
"Thatās why Iām checking it after hours. Just, you knowā¦backstory stuffā¦"
A sound escaped her lipsāsomewhere between a scoff of disbelief and a startled laugh. She looked at himāno, she pinned him with her gaze.
"Backstory stuff?" she repeated, her lips curling into a smile. Not even a mocking one anymore. She was genuinely amused. "Did you, Doctor Spencer Reid, when asked what the evidence pertains to, actually respond with backstory stuff"
āNo, Iā¦I meanā¦ā
āOh God, itās a good thing they donāt put you in front of cameras. Imagine you, at a press conference. Just casually dropping backstory stuff on national televisionā¦ā
āI can handle myself in front of cameras,ā he clarified, feeling an odd warmth creep up the back of his neck. āBut there arenāt any here. And besides, I didnāt realize you wanted me to recite the entire case file from memoryā¦ā
āThat wonāt be necessary,ā she said with another amused snort. āBackstory stuff is actually a surprisingly accurate term. You know, very professional.ā
He rolled his eyes, feigning irritation, though what he really felt was more akin to embarrassment.
āSpeaking of professionalism, maybe you could get back to work?ā he suggested.
āI donāt have to,ā she replied, flashing him a sweet smile. āI already checked everything. And I was wrong. Itās not foundationāitās nitroglycerin.ā
Spencerās jaw practically hit the floor.
For the first time since stepping into the lab, his mind was running at full capacity.
"Nitroglycerin? Are you sure?"
"Well, I donāt get these things wrong," she said, almost offended.
"Nitroglycerin," he repeated in a whisper.
Oh, for heavenās sake. Suddenly, everything made sense.
She leaned her elbows on the table, watching him with interest.
He wanted to kiss her.
Noāhe did notā
"Thank you," he blurted out, her words becoming background noise as his thoughts raced. "Thank you for coming. Thisā¦this really helps. I have to tell the teamā"
He turned toward the door, dazed by the realization.
Something stopped him.
"Spencer," she called gently.
She didnāt seem angry that he was leaving so abruptly. If anything, there was a certain soft glint in her eyes, a quiet fascination with his sudden revelation. Standing in the doorway, he looked at her one last time, feeling himself freeze in place again. He said nothing, sensing that she wanted to say something instead.
She tilted her head slightly.
"You owe me a favor," she said.
There was something about the way she said itāsomething that sent a slow, deliberate shiver down his spine. Not even a shiver. More like a careful march of cold fingertips down his vertebrae.
So, naturally, he did what any grown man with an IQ of 187 would do.
He parted his lips slightly and nodded.

why do you think indie metroidvanias specifically take so long to make, and is there a solution that you'd like to see them go for? (i know that would likely mean a compromise of some kind, but like, you know)
The reason why is fairly obvious: the classic metroidvania formula makes it very easy to fall prey to unintentional scope creep and is a positive nightmare to QA.
Non-linear progression gating based on precision platforming challenges where the player's basic moveset is constantly changing means every little thing needs to be rigorously tested in every part of the gameworld, carefully checking every room with every combination of abilities the player could conceivably possess for a wide range of failure states.
Is there some combination of abilities that allows the player to get into this room, but not out of it afterwards? Is there some combination of abilities that allows the player to do things in an order you didn't expect? Does that variation in sequencing in turn create situations where the player can end up somewhere without an ability you had assumed was required to get there? And so forth.
Even once you've got everything tested, it's not over. Every tiny change during development, even as small as adding or subtracting a couple of percentage points from the player character's jumping height or walking speed, can potentially have a domino effect that introduces a whole new set of failure states. It's not a pretty picture!
As for solutions, the one most solo or small-team metroidvanias end up adopting is to put a damper on the exponential QA explosion by linearising progression. If you haven't flipped the right switch or visited the right room, the door simply doesn't open, the progression-critical cutscene simply doesn't trigger, and so forth. Even big-name metroidvanias often make judicious use of this one: for example, Super Metroid has certain doors in the early game that just arbitrarily will not open until you've collected a couple of specific items from the game's combat-free introductory area.
The trouble with this approach is that if you use it to the extent that's necessary to keep your QA responsibilities at a manageable level for a small team or solo developer, you functionally end up with a linear, level-based platformer that makes you walk from one level to the next. Whether this disqualifies a given title from the "metroidvania" label is a demarcation problem I'm not interested in litigating, but folks who expected a more open world experience are quite understandably going to be disappointed.
The approach I'd prefer more indie metroidvanias take is to keep things under control by limiting their scope. Not ever damn thing needs to be the next Hollow Knight; many classics of the genre can be completed in well under an hour with good routing even without employing modern speedrun tech. Similarly, some of the best indie metroidvanias are those with the smallest maps; Alruna and the Necro-Industrialists, probably the best example of open-world map design of any metroidvania published in 2024, has a map that's scarcely twenty by twenty screens, and its routing is downright fiendish.
(One of my perennial probably-never-gonna-happen projects is to design a full-featured metroidvania targeting a two to three hour casual playthrough whose entire map can fit on a single screen while remaining at a vaguely playable zoom level, in the style of titles like 1 Screen Platformer.)

i am suffering
#trying to do to the password assignment problem set that asks for an input and checks if it has:#a lowercase letterā an uppercase letterā a number and a symbol.#if one is absent it spits an error messageā and if they are all given it says it is a valid password.#my thought process was to make integers named lowerā upperā number and symbol#thenā for as long as there is a character in the given stringā#it takes a given character from the stringā and uses a switch function to add 1 to one of the aforementioned integers depending on what sort#of character it is.#if it's lowercaseā it adds 1 to the integer lowerā etc.#and then at the end it checks if all the integers are above zero. if yesā it's valid. if noā it's invalid.#so i wrote something simple with that logic to emulate that.#except! when i try to compile itā my program gives the error message that 'expression is not an integer constant expression' on the line#that checks if given character is lowercase.#i think it's a problem with the ctype library because im not good with it yet.#im looking at the manual pages for ctype.h provided by cs50 but it is giving me net zero information im understanding nothing#what is this! what am i looking at#why won't you understand what i mean when i say 'islower'#i don't want to manually go ''int c > 64 | int c < 90'' it'll take off points for design...#agh! agh. god#šrambling#im taking a break this is enough for today.
