Gabriel’s (missing) cross
Let’s put everything we know about that spooky statue of the Archangel Gabriel in one thread to make the conversation about its possible meaning as a Good Omens 3 clue more structured. Starting off with the relevant part of the official commentary from X-Ray:
Douglas Mackinnon got one thing wrong in his part of the interview — Gabriel wasn’t carved by “some guy in Italy,” but a British sculptor and prop maker David Field working as a part of the team at 3DEye in London.
Technically speaking, it’s a gorgeous piece of hand-carved expanded polystyrene with a clay sculpted head on top of it — even if the Archangel’s smug likeness isn’t that pleasant to look at, all things considered. The scenic artists from 3DEye made it look like stone afterwards.

The body itself took ten days to sculpt and is a faithful copy of the famous statue on Ponte Sant'Angelo in Rome called Angel with the Cross by Ercole Ferrata. It stands on the inscription “Cuius principatus super humerum eius” (“Whose government shall be upon His shoulder”, Isaiah 9:16), and this quote makes much more sense for Gabriel than the cross in his hands. The usual iconography of the Archangel uses a trumpet or a white lily instead.
Ponte Sant'Angelo was originally used to expose the heads of those sentenced to death — each of the angelic statues on it carry Arma Christi, the Instruments of the Passion. Like the Second Coming, what seems to be a hopeful message to the Chosen Ones can also be a warning for the others.

The statue of Gabriel, first shown in full in the cemetery scene of the Good Omens 2 title sequence, reappears at the very end as a part of the bridge leading to the biggest Easter egg — at least according to Peter Anderson, the animator behind it — which is the lift in the background, implying how we’re getting closer towards the Second Coming. Notice how the cross broke down in half at some point between these two scenes!

And it disappears in the plot as well: Gabriel’s memory depicts it only from his point of view, with the camera deliberately moving slightly to the right and stopping at his eye level. The centered, establishing shots show the statue with empty hands as a bookend.
I believe that this cross is meant to serve as a foreshadowing, a reminder of the absolution of sins and eternal life through Christ’s sacrifice and Second Coming. We see it only through Gabriel and Aziraphale’s eyes — when Beelzebub looks at the statue, the cross is not there.

As seen in the BTS photos and videos, it’s not an editing error, but a deliberate positioning of the physical props on set. The cross was clearly meant to be a removable part of the statue and displayed in a specific way to convey a message to the audience.
The question remains: is it a reassurance, something to look forward to, or maybe rather a warning?
Not helpfully at all, the traditional use of angelic imagery in Christian cemeteries matches both interpretations.

Ok but... Why were we presented with a new angelic character and not a canonical being?

I'll develop the question further: Not that it's a problem to have new angels/Seraphim/archangels as a character, but why wasn't a canonical angel introduced, like Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, Ariel...?
WHY CREATE A CHARACTER (Sera) WHEN THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER BEINGS FROM THESE MYTHS/BELIEF? I don't exactly include Emily because I believe she must have a story behind her to exist.
It's strange because the most diverse demons (coming from demonology and other beliefs and myths) appear in both Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, but these beings from Heaven do not, Except St Peter!

St Peter's appearance indicates which myths/beliefs the work is based on, and so... St Peter is directly linked to Christianity (I don't want to get into the subject of syncretism of religions!!) which come a lot from Jewish beliefs too (this is kinda obvious).

This whole thought came up when I saw edits on Tiktok about a possible rivalry between Lucifer and Miguel/Michael in the future of the series, it would be something I would like to see!
Could these be famous angels like Gabriel, Michael...??

Note: I have no problem with the character Sera, my point is why have an original character to occupy her high position when there are names in myths/beliefs that would be there?
Anyway, what do you think about it? Would the series be afraid to include beings linked to major religions? Could it be that these angels haven’t appeared yet because they will have great prominence in the future?

OKAY i am confused why no one thought of this..mark and the famous BPS duo headcanons of them reacting to a REAL Angel Y/n coming down and basically getting rid of the alternates?? :00
Oooo y'know that's a good idea. It makes me wonder if ALL angels in TMC were just replaced or never existed at all after Alt!Gabriel came along--maybe they lost the war with the Alternates/demons and were eradicated all at once.

You've been watching over Mark for some time, eventually coming down to Earth disguised as his next door neighbor, wondering if he could help you move some stuff.
This strangely happens the same day he prayed for a "guardian angel" in his life, especially when he noticed you were wearing all white clothing, didn't specify where you were from, and.....looked quite ethereal in appearance.
But he thinks it's just a coincidence and becomes fast friends with you.
You shared his same values and beliefs, subtly protecting him whenever he visited the church and went to school.
Though you weren't sure if you should tell him what you truly are...
Until the night he gets that phone call from "Cesar" and goes to his house against your wishes.
When he inevitably leads the Alternate back to his own home, you're there waiting for it.
The second it enters, you stand between them and reveal your wings, halo, and several eyes, shocking the Alternate as it thought angels were already eradicated...
You basically say "nah I'm still here, go back to hell" and eviscerate it in a flash of holy light.
To your amazement, it actually worked! You finally had the power to avenge your fellow angels.
You immediately put your human disguise back on when you realized Mark's was watching the entire time-
But he's already kneeling at your feet, trying not to cry bc you're the guardian angel he's been asking for!!!
He 100% worships you now after you confirm that, but you ask him to just treat you like a friend and not as some divine idol.
Ofc you're telling that to a paranoid 17 yr old Christian human boy who saw you literally vaporize an Alternate so.....it's hard for him to talk to you so casually after that.
Adam
Posing as a new student, you approached him at school and asked if you could join BPS, feigning interest in the paranormal investigations.
He's like "sure but your clothes are prob gonna get messed up" as he gestures to your pristine white shirt and jeans.
You just wear a black BPS jacket over them and go along with the "ghost hunts", finding out that he's looking for Alternates specifically.
That's fine with you though, considering you came down to eliminate as many as you could w/o drawing Gabriel's attention.
One of the hidden cameras caught you making one disappear and Adam's mind=blown after replaying the footage and seeing your wings show up in a few frames, learning you were an angel all along!
You beg him to keep it a secret, but he's so excited he brags to Jonah and Evelin (who thinks he edited that stuff in).
He asks you to continue vaporizing any Alternates you come across as long as he can get footage of it...though you don't like the idea of him exploiting your powers this way for fame.
However he suddenly becomes afraid of you out of nowhere, especially in the days following the investigation at the Torres house.
He just kicks you out of BPS without explanation and goes into hiding.
But soon enough you find out he's a Sleeper Alternate and become faced with a very tough decision...
When he shows up on your doorstep, half-naked and pleading for you to purge him from this world.
Never in a million years did you think any Alternate would be so attached to his "humanity" that he'd rather die than live without it.
Unfortunately, you can't grant Adam's wish knowing he was closely tied to Six and Gabriel's plans, but you do reverse the damage the bleach did to his organs.
He's not in constant physical pain anymore, though you vow to protect this scared boy, knowing he didn't choose to be this way.
Jonah
You met him through Adam sometime after joining BPS.
And right away, he feels a lot safer whenever you accompany them on assignments.
There's just something about your presence that's reassuring.
He makes jokes about how you act like a "perfect little angel" when you tell him you don't do drugs, never curse, mediate any arguments he and Adam might have, and always have the cleanest clothing.
Then he's confused as to why you tensed up.
Before you realize "angel" is just a metaphor humans use sometimes and calm down afterwards.
So he doesn't know what you are.....yet.
He used to say "hell" (like "oh hell yeah!") on a regular basis but now feels awkward when he says it around you.
You're only forced to reveal your true identity when Preacher tries to give him and Adam M.A.D, and you just....eliminate her on the spot with holy light.
She was particularly resistant to it, so your energy was spent and you nearly passed out.
Jonah's understandably freaked out by your powers and runs away, but after you find him and help him calm down, he becomes quite clingy.
His friendship with Adam grows more divided as he sees you as more caring and protective than him.
He didn't believe in angels before but he sure as shit does now.

The Passion Of Jimbriel
Part 1: The Entry into Soho
The story of events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus, and the days following, until his ascension to Heaven, are collectively known as the Passion narratives. It comes from the Latin "to suffer," or "to endure."
More than one op has mentioned there are parallels to this in S2, so I thought I would try and find how well the whole narrative was followed. Oh yes, is the short answer, it certainly does! And how! And in places you might be surprised about. I hope this series of metas might answer some of the odd mysteries of "why is that there...? that are still floating around at the moment for you.
I've tried to match the narratives to scenes and incidents in S2 as closely as I can, but I only have sketchy Anglican Christian background, so if you have had a more thorough Catholic upbringing than me and see something I have missed, slip me a message and I'll do my best to edit things.
A word of warning before we start - it's not a linear match-up. I'm planning to run through the traditional sequence of the Passion in order, but will match with the S2 scenes as needed, and those are scattered back and forth in time. It's Catch-22 again - everything thrown up in the air and landing at seeming random places, where ever they seem to fit best for the narrative.

AZIRAPHALE: Ah, you startled me. GABRIEL: Is that good? AZIRAPHALE: I just didn't see you coming.
I actually thought I might start with this little scene, where Jim gives Aziraphale a jump-scare by creeping up next to him silently. Annoyed, Aziraphale tells him to make some noise as he moves about, and Jim trolls him with some creaking noises, before starting to sing.

There were prophecies about the arrival of Jesus, but the ironic thing here is that Aziraphale, someone who has a vast collection of prophecies and is someone you could consider an expert, had no warning of Gabriel's arrival - he just crept up to the door as a nasty surprise!

Starting proper, there were the three temptations while Jesus was fasting in the wilderness.
Making bread out of stones (I've also covered the Eccles Cakes here in the Altar of Eccles Cakes. They have multiple purposes!)

2. Being tempted to jump from a pinnacle of a temple and relying on angels to break his fall.

3. Being tempted to worship Satan in return for ruling all the kingdoms of the world.
This one was actually covered in S1, at Golgotha. I know Crowley mentioned to Aziraphale that he was the one who tempted Jesus, but I wrote a meta about it because I realized most people were missing the joke in the TWO demon names that Aziraphale suggested Crowley had changed his name to, and how that relates to that particular temptation.

The last miracle performed before the Passion was the raising Lazarus from his tomb, four days after he had died.

After Crowley is dragged down to Hell for an interview with Lord Beelzebub and finds out they are being threatened with the Book Of Life for being involved with Gabriel, he rushes back to Aziraphale and says they have to hide them. As they decide they will try a shared minor miracle Jimbriel descends the spiral staircase:
GABRIEL: Hello. Where did you come back from? CROWLEY: Outside. GABRIEL: Outside? Hmm. Is it big? Can I see the outside? CROWLEY: No, no, no, no, no. No, no no. You need to stay here, inside the bookshop. We can look after you in here. Just stay here.
Inside? Inside the tomb? Aziraphale has even 'wrapped' him up for the occasion.
Later, we find out that:
AZIRAPHALE: Jim is in his bedroom upstairs. I told him bookshops are always closed on a Wednesday. As for Inspector Constable, at a guess, they were sent to verify the 25 Lazarii miracle you and I seem to have accidentally performed together the other night. CROWLEY: That's how you lot measure miracles? How many times it could have brought someone back from the dead?
Uh huh. The miracle of Lazarus.
The Entry into Jerusalem
Jesus made his way into Jerusalem by donkey to show that he came in peace, not as conquering king on a horse. Gabriel does the same.
But he walked in, you say, on foot!
Yes, but he walked by the Dirty Donkey pub on his way to bookshop.

Next, was the Cleansing of the Temple.
What temple? The bookshop, of course! Is it not a temple of books?
Aziraphale sets Jim to cleaning it, with a duster.

I'd say you could also call the bookshop a temple to Crowley - it is decorated in his colours, after all. The presence of Jim initially drives the merchants and money dealers demon away, snatching his sunglasses from his mini-altar as his goes.
The last step on the Passion I'll cover in this meta is the Anointing of Jesus. It tells the story of how Jesus had an expensive perfume, worth a year's wages, poured on his feet from an alabaster jar by woman who was considered sinful. The gathered Disciples were aghast at this waste - they asked why she did not sell the perfume instead and give the money to the poor. Jesus thanked her for preparing him for burial.
This one had me stumped for a while, and I had to think hard about where something had been "poured out" on feet, because I was pretty sure no one had been "anointed" on the head, which is another version of this part of the narrative. Then I remembered seeing a GIF that was Aziraphale focusing on the floor for a number of seconds after Crowley had upended the box Gabriel had carried to the bookshop with his fly in it to read the message on the bottom of the box.

My precious...! You poured them out at your feet, Crowley!
Alabaster is a soft white stone that is easy to carve. The bland cardboard box makes a good analogy for this. And in it we see Aziraphale has filled it with priceless treasures - not one but two lost Shakespeare plays!
If at this point you are going "Wait - Wot? Now you're telling me both Jim/Gabriel and Crowley are playing the part of Jesus here?" I'm saying yes. It's not the first time I've said it. I'm not the only op who has been saying it, either. And as we head into part two of this meta you'll see Crowley take on more of this role from Jim/Gabriel. The two of them have a lot in common, much more than you might have suspected or might even want to acknowledge. This is the past echoing into the present again. I think it also gives us some interesting things about the future to contemplate.
Next: Part 2 - Trials and Denials
Where we move on to the Last Supper, and the Arrest of Jesus before his before he is judged before a court of priests and then Pontius Pilate, and the gathered crowd.

Ok so here is my theories for Good Omens season 3
☑️More Angel Crowley flashbacks (possibly his status/name as an angel unveiled[and here are my theories on that])
☑️ “Love of My Life” by Queen as Crowley proceeds to, as Castiel put it, “I found a liquor shop. I drank it.”
☑️ Aziraphale fumbling around kinda in heaven. Like he’s just kinda really awkward up there and doesn’t really know how to do things or he just changes things to have like a couch or something idk
☑️ Muriel in the bookshop (not really a theory so much as a hope) Also Muriel finally changes her clothes (I will cry if she’s still in that all white uniform even I have limits)
☑️ Crowley going to Nina and saying “Give me Death”

He's laughing when Aziraphale says 'moral argument' and mutters it under his breath and starts walking away and Aziraphale is slightly annoyed/embarrassed and I'm sry I've started reading into everything I feel like it might have some sort of connection.

My Sins Return to Visit Me: Atrocities, Whiteness, and Cosmic Justice in The Patriot
As he watches over the body of his slain son just before The Patriot's final battle, Benjamin Martin confides to his friend, Harry Burwell, that he believes Gabriel's death is some kind of divine repayment for his past wrongs: "I have long feared that my sins would return to visit me, and the cost is more than I can bear." This line also appears at the very beginning of the film, replacing scenes that were filmed but not included in any released edition featuring Martin's actions at Fort Wilderness during the French and Indian War years prior. We hear it in a voice over as Martin closes the trunk lid on his Cherokee tomahawk. Not only is he haunted by his past, but this representation of the American Revolution is haunted by the Cherokee people in spite of writer Rob Rodat and director Rolad Emmerich's attempts to erase them. Although the narrative brushes Martin's words here off as simple grief, I would argue that this reading of his past is more historically honest than the one the film's ending suggests.
In a broad sense, this film appropriates Native identity for the Patriots in the same way Benjamin Martin appropriated that tomahawk. In The Patriot's logic, these men defeated the British because they were fighting to protect their homes and families, they knew the terrain well from a lifetime spent living on it, and they made use of guerilla tactics to gain an advantage over stronger forces. Meanwhile, the British, personified by Colonel Tavington, are brutal colonizers motivated only by greed. It is not hard to see how including Native characters would trouble this interpretation. Only one scene in the film features any, scouts who drop off the single survivor of Benjamin Martin's massacre in the woods at Colonel Tavington's camp. Apart from this, the only onscreen representation the Cherokees have is Martin's tomahawk, and the film only tells their story through the lens of his memories.
Ironically, presenting the Patriots as "native" ends up meaning Tavington's treatment of them bears striking resemblance to historical Patriots' treatment of the Cherokees and other tribes. It is unclear how many homes Tavington has targeted in the beginning of his screentime to have earned the nickname "the Butcher" that General O'Hara informs us about, but after Cornwallis allows him to resume these tactics, he burns eight Patriot homes, killing the inhabitants before burning Pembroke Church with its congregation inside. A few years prior from 1776-1777, a period the film skips over, Patriot forces had waged war against the Cherokee nation for its support of the British crown with devastating effects. Historian Jordan Baker writes in "The Cherokee-American War from the Cherokee Perspective:"
"All along the border, American troops launched a scorched earth campaign. And with each victory the Continental forces earned, they burned Cherokee towns and took survivors prisoner. By the end of the campaign, they had destroyed over fifty Cherokee towns, including crops and livestock, and killed hundreds of Cherokee, enslaving the survivors and sending them as far off as the Caribbean."
Among Tavington's first lines in the film are orders surely similar to those Continental officers gave in the aforementioned Cherokee towns: "Fire the house and barns. Let it be known that if you harbor the enemy, you will lose your home." Even the worst excesses of Tavington's cruelty have more in common with Americans' treatment of Native peoples after the war than any British actions during it. For example,
"In March 1782, after Indian attacks upon American settlements on the western frontier, militiamen under the command of Col. David Williamson attacked the Moravian Christian Mission at Gnadenhutten. Peaceful Delaware Indians, who had converted to Christianity, were rounded up, and ninety-six Delaware Indians, men, women, and children, were bludgeoned to death."
Perhaps most ironically, Tavington's lust for the Ohio valley is a sentiment that historically belonged to his enemies. According to Jason Edwin Anderson, American land speculators, including George Washington, had designs on this region, but the Royal Proclamation of 1763 recognized Native sovereignty there and barred settlement beyond the Appalachian Mountains. As a result, expansion was a stronger motive for independence than freedom from British tyranny in the western colonies. In almost every case, Tavington's atrocities and the reasons behind them are displaced American ones. Under different circumstances, he would have been a model Patriot.
Reading The Patriot by light of the Native stories it erases makes it less a story of hardy pioneers and their effete oppressors than of one set of brutal colonizers being given a taste of their own medicine by a slightly more recently arrived brutal colonizer. However, there are a couple of crucial and related differences between Tavington's fictional atrocities and the Patriots' historical ones. First, Tavington's reach is far more restricted. General Cornwallis grants him permission to utilize brutal tactics solely in service of capturing Martin. He does not direct his other officers to coordinate with Tavington and kill as many rebels as possible. Why? In Cornwallis's words, "These colonials are our brethren." Not "These colonials will be our brethren after we win the war," which would suggest a political meaning to "brethren." That they are brethren now suggests that this brotherhood is based in something unchangeable, like race.
Even Martin concedes the humanity of British soldiers; he offers Rawlins a bounty for their gear, not their scalps. His disposal of his enemies at Fort Wilderness also evinces a more profound hatred for Native people; he sends a raft full of heads and two men alive "to tell the tale" to the French fort but baskets of eyes, tongues, and fingers to the Cherokees with no one to explain what happened. Tavington holds Whiteness in no such esteem. He murders people of color, too, shooting some Black men for refusing to give him information, but their fate pales in comparison to the one that awaits the White congregation of Pembroke Church for the same reason. What appears to make Tavington's actions so aberrant in this context, and so shocking to the film's heroes even after he does the same things numerous times, is not their brutality or that they are directed against non-combatants, but that he targets other White people.
I can't help wondering how the Cherokees would have reacted to their ally in red and green had they been present in the film to do so. I imagine very different responses. On the one hand, some might have felt apprehension about the Patriot retribution that would follow Tavington's actions stemming from their own memories of Fort Wilderness. Others, also with Fort Wilderness on their minds, may have felt that Tavington had thrown the party of the year at Pembroke Church and rudely failed to invite them. Surely some of the scouts who bring Tavington the survivor are the right age to have received Martin's baskets from Fort Wilderness as children, but they are denied the opportunity for vengeance that Martin so eagerly indulges for himself. That would have been an even more fitting means of Martin's sins returning to visit him, if that was indeed what the filmmakers were aiming for.
Instead, they retreated even further from Cherokee representation than originally intended. The extended cut features a very brief scene in which Captain Bordon informs Tavington that the Cherokee scouts have arrived, and the two officers approach two scouts who stand facing them before the camera cuts away. In the theatrical release, the scene opens on the scouts' backs as they walk through the camp, and the camera cuts to Tavington and Bordon entering the tent where the wounded private is being treated. Apparently even showing Tavington in the same frame with Cherokee men emphasizes too clearly that the British were allied to people many Patriots, Martin obviously included, viewed as subhuman.
If Martin did maintain his view of the loss Tavington visited on him as a kind of cosmic justice, it would make him a far more interesting and reflective character. It would mean he recognized, on some level, that there was a price to pay for his horrific, racially-motivated violence beyond just feeling guilty. Moreover, it would have acknowledged that American imperialism was no less greedy and destructive than British imperialism. If the film supported that reading, Martin might have died along with Tavington, or at the very least lost his ill-gotten gains. Instead, the film ends with him watching the construction of his new home in the exact spot where the former one stood with the sun beaming down on him and his family.* After ordering Wilkins to burn the church, Tavington tells him, "This will be forgotten," but here we are clearly meant to have forgotten about Martin's atrocities already. This becomes more poignant when we consider that the same Royal Proclamation of 1763 that forbad British settlement beyond the Appalachian Mountains also granted land to men who had served in the French and Indian War, including 3,000 acres to captains, the rank Benjamin Martin held. Not only did he commit similar atrocities to Tavington, but he received the very reward for them that Tavington covets, and from the same hands. For all Martin's claims to feel guilt over his past actions, his life is a brutal tactics success story, one only reinforced by the film's ending.
*Some commentors have argued that the house being rebuilt is actually Charlotte's. While I don't think that's the case, it would still support my point. Charlotte's house was the larger of the two. presumably with even more land attached. It's an upgrade!
