Introductory Post
Hi there Tumblr/fitblr!
This blog is going to be a bunch of things:
Part training log, part journal, part catalogue of articles and videos covering topics related to bodybuilding/powerlifting/weightlifting training and nutrition. It will also probably involve applying critical social theory to fitness-related topics. In particular I'm interested in Quantified Self discourses and practices and critical examination of them - in particular the ways in which this kind of self-monitoring practice interacts with the subjectivity of those who practice it (including me; this could be something I'll be journaling about). And probably some pictures of my many cats, and other cats.
Some Background:
I’ve trained with weights fairly seriously on and off for about the past 5 years, and first got interested in weight training about 10 years ago. But until recently I'd never really been able to train consistently for more than a few months at a time. Various issues always got in the way. Chief among those was first, a nasty injury I sustained very early in my lifting career - I strained all of the muscles in my upper back and my right arm quite violently. I did this by attempting to do a pullup when I had neither the requisite mobility nor the strength to do one - and the straining and seizing up that the tissues did resulted in irritation to the radial nerve in my right arm (I’m righthanded like most) that took months and months to heal and a lot of physiotherapy and chiropractic care.
(My right tricep still gives out easily to this day when I try to overhead press and take sets close to failure, so I have to be very careful with training it with high intensity. I’ve re-strained it multiple times since healing the original injury, though never as bad as the first time.)
In addition to that, I also struggled with depression for a long time that got in the way of life in general including getting myself into the gym to lift.
More recently I’ve been able to be quite consistent in my training, but I’ve been finding myself kind of spinning my wheels. I seem to be what is sometimes referred to in the sports science literature as a non-responder in that it seems like I have quite a high level of base work capacity and I need to use a relatively high amount of training volume (measured in the number of hard sets performed per week for a given body part) to get bigger and stronger. I’m still testing out this idea but so far it seems right. I’m currently still definitely a novice in terms of both strength and size, yet I seem to need to use quite high doses of volume to get anything to happen in terms of making gains. I ran Starting Strength for a while a few years ago, smashing massive amounts of calories and the gains were pitifully miniscule compared to what people report as typical of what you can get out of that program. Mostly I just got fat, and got slightly stronger, re-injured my right tricep trying to do heavy 5RMs in the standing barbell overhead press, and taught myself awful squatting form trying to chase the loading progression that coach Rippetoe advocates.
I’m an early-30s guy, 6’1, currently 186ish lbs somewhere in the low teens in bodyfat percentage, and trying to gain weight/muscle.
Goals:
One of my main goals is to finally get my right tricep strong enough to overhead press roughly 150 lbs, and to flat bench press about 200 lbs (both for reps). I also want to be able to strict barbell bent row about 200 lbs for reps and bang out about 20 pullups with strict form. And when it comes to my legs, I want to be able to ass-to-grass squat about 250 and conventional deadlift in the low to mid-300s, again, for reps. In short, I’d like to get just out of the novice strength class and into the cusp of the intermediate class.
This is just a bit of background on where I'm coming from and where I want to get to, as a trainee. I'll be talking in future posts coming soon (already in the works), about the program I'm using as well as my gym kit, and my nutrition program - i.e., the tools I'll be using to achieve the goals I've laid out. And then I'll be writing about my philosophy of training as well as my thoughts about fitness discourses and practices as they currently exist in late capitalist North America.

I’m proud to admit that I use anabolics. And I use them safely. My balls are fine, my dick works and I have as much muscle-mass as a guy taking twice the amount of gear...

Some more of my gym kit and today's training.. the shoes are my Olympic weightlifting shoes that I've mentioned in previous posts - the Legacy Lifters from Reebok. These shoes have nearly a 1 inch heel rise (22 mm) on the bigger side when it comes to weightlifting shoes, which really helps me hit a deep squat with my long femurs. The foot bed is also wider than most, especially in the toe box, which is something I really need, having wide feet.
And I've got my Tupperware of lifting chalk and the section of PVC pipe I use to roll out any tight spots in my legs and back. This beats the hell out of any foam roller I've ever used - rolling on it can get my t spine to crack when no foam roller I've used ever could.
On today's training: this is day 1 of the 3rd microcycle (training week) of my 5 week accumulation phase. 2 more weeks before I'll deload for one week and then continue accumulating volume for 5-6 weeks.
If I didn't already mention it, this is my very first time running this program from Renaissance Periodization. So far progress is steadier and easier to track than it ever was before, and so is my fatigue.
Notes:
-7 sets of ATG squats gave me the biggest leg pump I've ever had in my life. Not just in my quads, glutes, hamstrings and calves too. I usually have trouble getting any kind of pump in my legs so this is pretty cool. Also feeling a very slight twinge in my right knee and I am really feeling glute medius after my workout on both sides.
-My right tricep is feeling pretty fucked up lately, like I need to take it easy on it or it'll get strained again. My overhead presses today felt hard. Must remember to take it easy on my pressing tomorrow and on Wednesday.
-Extra dextrose in my intra-workout shake really, really helped me feel better today.. no more post workout hypoglycemia for me.
