Hello! I've been reading the questions here and I saw people saying that have been following the game's development for years. I'm sorry for being the clueless one (haha) but how long have you been developing the game? You are doing an amazing job, I can't wait for the full version!
Thanks for answering our survey! And don’t worry, you’re not clueless! We started working on “The Pirate Mermaid” before we had a Tumblr, so many others here probably don’t know our background either. This gives us a great opportunity to take a winding trip down memory lane now (warning, lots of long rambling recollections ahead). xD
As you may know, our game dev group Navigame is made up of two people. Nellie handles art and voice direction, and Arowana (Aro) does the writing and coding. We met around 2012 on Lemmasoft Forums, which is a community for English visual novel developers and players. At that time, we were both working on different games. Nellie, under the name NSEY, was making a dating sim called “Gamelicious!” and Aro, under the name Variable X, was doing a mystery otome called “AXIOM.01.”
The two of us became fans of each other’s work and thought it’d be fun to collaborate on a small side project. After some brainstorming, we decided to make an otome based on “The Little Mermaid” fairytale. That eventually became “The Pirate Mermaid” (though it’s not such a “small side project” anymore, haha)! We worked on it for a few months and released our very first demo on Lemmasoft - when people mention playing our old demo, that’s the one they’re talking about.
Shortly after, we were approached by our friend and fellow game dev, the awesome azurextwilight, to put together a game for Valentine’s Day. And, because we were crazy, we challenged ourselves to finish the whole game in a month. That crazy Valentine project was our first finished game, “a2 ~a due~.” Even with all the sleepless nights, we had a super fun experience with a2, so we started working with other devs on more games. For example, we joined the lovely KittyKatStar and Deji, under the group name Apple Cider, to make a game called “Autumn’s Journey.” Aro also worked with them and Winter Wolves on another game called “C14 Dating.”
During that period, we didn’t spend as much time developing our personal games, but were gaining a lot of experience by working with more established devs and learning new skills. So by the time we returned to our old games, like “The Pirate Mermaid,” we saw lots of things we could improve! Our previous projects (“Gamelicious” and “AXIOM.01”) got put on hold for various reasons, such as other team members getting busy or leaving. :( So the two of us decided to channel all our efforts into making “The Pirate Mermaid” together.
We were more ambitious now and no longer satisfied with the first version of the game, so we decided to do a total revamp. We redid all the art, the user interface, much of the coding, etc. in order to improve it. We also added a lot of new features, such as voice acting, and fleshed out the script to give players a better sense of the karma system and characters. The new demo that we released in October was the result of all these efforts. :)
It’s been a blast to hear from people who played our first demo and have been following our games since we started on Lemmasoft. We’re also happy to see more people finding us through Tumblr, itch.io, and other venues now. Thanks to everyone who sticks with us to the full game - your support is always appreciated!

Ask anyone who works in classical music what the biggest challenge of their job is, and they will unfailingly reply: getting young people to listen to it.  Yet millions of people are listening to hours of contemporary classical music every week, and they might not even know it. They do it while they play video games.
