I've been a Winter defender for so long, surrounded by a fandom who mostly hates him and now that I have emotional intelligence since I'm not nine (no offense to nine year olds 🙏) and I have a place to ramble where I'll be listened to I can finally defend my angsty ice dragon I will absolutely do so. This stupid ass garbagefire of a series has meant so much to me over the years and I'm passionate about so many of these characters. I adore Winter so much, reading through the books for like the 50th time is so amazing, like I used to immediately hate moon because she was called a Mary sue, Qibli because people find him annoying, Kinkajou because she was the 'annoying one', but now I love all of those characters. I can see traits of all of them in me, and they mean a lot to me. Turtle's anxiety, Qibli's Sociotropy, (needing to be liked by everyone) hypervigilance (I've never seen people talking about it, and to see it represented in my favorite book series makes me feel seen.), fierce loyalty, Winter's guilt, self-loathing, desperate desire to please his parents, Moon's social anxiety, nervousness, and love of reading, Kinkajou's desire to be a dragon others notice and remember.

This turned into a rant about a completely different thing I'm so sorry, I'm not even done I have so much to say about these guys

Living in the present day does give you a warped sense of what mass art vs weird stuff is out there simply because much of the bad mass produced stuff (old movie serials, soulless 50s major label pop) has faded into the background. For every MASH theres a forgettable giligans island ripoff and for every The Hustler there is a Studio's soulless attempt at a family musical movie that everyone forgot as soon as it hit theaters.

People enjoyed and consumed these like they do any other Netflix original garbagefire, but they were bad and were forgotten just as the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequels will be.

At the same time I feel like the weird stuff is much harder to access casually now than it was back in the day, simply because the 60s through the 70s were a wellspring for good movies made by weird people if only because that's what the studios were trying to buy. Remember the Spec script boom that birthed writers like Shane Black? Now imagine that but for directors who just wanted to make weird movies.

You just don't get that these days. Disney might be grabbing indie directors, but its making them keep to a formula, and it shuttered the studios it used to make any other sort of film before that years ago anyway. Like, the weird stuff is still out there but it didn't used to be siloed the way it is now.
