It's always weird how controversy can muddle reception of media. Like I was watching Geek Charming on Disney+ and I remember this movie seemed to just float off into the ether after being released. But this movie is actually pretty solid for a non musical based DCOM. I asked around my friend group if they remembered it, and the girls did remember it but a lot of them called it "the movie with Sarah Hyland's abusive ex". Like that's how the movie is remembered, and not just as a good movie in it's own right. Sarah Hyland kills it in this movie but people don't remember that. A solid A-tier DCOM that is relegated to the Forgotten Worlds.
I'd never actually heard of that movie, which amazes me because I was in the target audience for it.

Okay, I shouldn't start any new projects right now, but my brain had an idea and won't leave me alone.
The Idea?
Royality Geek Charming AU.
For those of you who don't know, Geek Charming is a Disney Channel Original movie from 2011 in which Josh (Roman), a film obsessed high school student wants to enter a film into an important competition, while Dylan (Patton), wants to win Spring Fling Queeen (or in our case King). Josh has been told he needs something true to life for his competition film, and Dylan needs something that will promote her for votes for Spring Fling. Josh decides he is going to write a hard hitting exposé on Popularity, exposing Dylan for the shallow person she really is. Dylan agrees to be in his movie, but only if it helps her win Spring Fling Queen. Things come out, and Dylan isn't really anything like Josh expected. She wants to win the dance crown for her mom, who died when she was little. To feel closer to her. Josh realizes his error in trying to expose Dylan and changes his movie from an exposè to a true documentary about a girl's dream. With plenty of misunderstandings and comedy of errors bits along the way. I'm probably the only person that wants to read this, but it struck me as a fun idea. Sorry for rambling.

it’s been a while since i did a little review but i’ve been watching more movies recently since i’m on easter break!
this one is a real dcom classic for me, it’s not as popular as some of the others but still was a massive staple in my childhood so i guess it’s more of a personal classic.
favourite character: dylan!
favourite moment: there wasn’t any particular stand out moment that i can think of, off the top of my head. but the delicate moments between dylan and josh where we see BOTH their walls breaking down is something so personal to me
favourite line: “my life will be O-V-E-R over” (i used to say this a lot when i was younger and now i’ve realised where i got it from 🤣)
review:
hmm well i don’t think i have an awful lot to say on this one but i don’t know why i had such a strong urge to rewatch it. i’m just a big fan of the popular x nerd trope (even though josh is barely nerd) and people overcoming their negative preconceptions of one another to develop a truly beautiful friendship, and even more in this case.
i’ll always love dylan purely because i think that from the minute we meet her, you can tell that she’s not really a bad person. yes she can be a bit selfish and self obsessed at times, but the little flickers of her true character are there from the beginning which made it hard for me to dislike her in any capacity.
the dynamic between dylan and josh has me thinking now because i don’t think that they were ever truly enemies or really disliked each other. their initial feelings towards each other were just a culmination of stereotypes (although some genuinely valid beliefs) that fell away quite quickly as they got to know each other.
one thing i especially love is how the adults in their lives both recognised immediately how good dylan and josh are for each other.
i wouldn’t call them real lovers but their love story is cute and definitely up there!
watch again?: 100% the wonderful thing about films like this is that they really and truly never get old. i could watch this again and again and not get bored

“I wanted people to be totally charmed by Doctor Octavius - as Peter Parker is. When he becomes Doc Ock, all those qualities that seemed wonderful in Doctor Octavius take on a threatening air. - Alfred Molina
